University-Industry-Collaborations In Egypt: Academics’ Perception Of Motivators And Success Factors, Ingy Ibrahim Saad Darwish
University-Industry-Collaborations In Egypt: Academics’ Perception Of Motivators And Success Factors, Ingy Ibrahim Saad Darwish
Theses and Dissertations
In today’s knowledge-based economies immense attention has been given to the links between industry and academia. Industries have increasingly realized the value from forging strong ties with universities and are constantly seeking strategic alliances in order to enhance their competitiveness and gain a stronger knowledge base. The Egyptian government has reaffirmed its intentions on boosting national innovation levels and has placed university-industry collaborations amongst its top priorities. While Egypt does have a considerably robust industrial sector, its potential in fostering innovation and technological development will remain hampered if policy makers remain unaware of the knowledge transfer channels in Egypt and …
Fault Tolerance For Access Point Failures In Smart Greenhouse Networked Control Systems, Yasmine Elnadi
Fault Tolerance For Access Point Failures In Smart Greenhouse Networked Control Systems, Yasmine Elnadi
Theses and Dissertations
The need for improving and increasing crop production, especially in harsh environmental conditions, has promoted the use of technological solutions, tools and automated methodologies inside a greenhouse to provide the best growing conditions for crops. This thesis presents an innovative fault-tolerant model on the access point level for a Networked Control Systems (NCS) greenhouse. NCS provides the ability to monitor and control the internal environmental conditions of a greenhouse such as temperature, relative humidity, and soil moisture. However, there is a risk of failures occurring at the access point level, that must be taken into consideration. Therefore, this thesis provides …

Navigating The Cairene Table: Food And Family Between What Is Ideal And What Is Real, Iman Afify
Theses and Dissertations
Our daily encounters with food, especially during our childhood, play a crucial role in shaping and informing our identity and our habitus. In this research, by using multimodal and auto ethnography, I argue that due to the guiding path that our senses carve for us, we make sense and contextualise our surroundings through our senses, and not only the five senses of vision, smell, taste, hearing, and touch, but also through our inner senses of time and temporality, and how time and memory play an important role in the registration of our surroundings through our bodies and senses. I am …
How State Governments Can Target Job Opportunities To Distressed Places, Timothy J. Bartik
How State Governments Can Target Job Opportunities To Distressed Places, Timothy J. Bartik
Upjohn Institute Technical Reports
The United States has two types of “place-based” jobs problems: low employment rates in 1) local labor markets and 2) neighborhoods. The local labor market problem can be dealt with by targeting distressed local labor markets for job creation. The neighborhood problem can be dealt with by targeting distressed neighborhoods with programs to improve residents’ job access. This report describes the magnitude of these place-based jobs problems and reviews research on the most cost-effective programs to address these problems. The report also reviews current state government efforts to target job opportunities to distressed places, pointing out that such targeting is …
Implementation Of A Central Line Maintenance Checklist In The Medical Intensive Care Unit, Charles Reynolds
Implementation Of A Central Line Maintenance Checklist In The Medical Intensive Care Unit, Charles Reynolds
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are key participants in hospital acquired infections (HAIs) that place heavy financial and medical burden on healthcare practices and facilities. Hospitals formulate central line bundles and checklists based off policies and procedures the NHSN provided about indications for central lines, procedures for insertion and maintenance of those central lines, and prevention measures. Critical care units experienced the greatest increase of CLABSIs from a national rate of 0.75 in 2019 to 1.04 in 2020 (Patel et al., 2021). Research shows that these measures and procedures work when intensive care unit nurses are compliant with theses interventions …

Synthetic pesticides are excessively consumed to control crop pests but abundant use of chemicals may implicate the whole ecosystem badly in the end. Despite the growing concern, few natural products are commercialized for pest control whilst on-farm use of existing botanically-based pesticides remains a small, but growing, component of crop protection practice. The experiment was conducted to assess the potential trade-offs of using botanical extracts (Neem leaf extract, NLE, and Moringa leaf extract, MLE) along with synthetic insecticide, Confidor 200 SL, against Aphis gossypii Glover. Meanwhile, impact of these insecticides on natural enemies were also determined in the field experiment. …
A Porosity-Based Model Of Dynamic Compaction In Under-Dense Materials, John A. Moore, Nathan R. Barton
A Porosity-Based Model Of Dynamic Compaction In Under-Dense Materials, John A. Moore, Nathan R. Barton
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Under-dense metals including micro-architectured structures and stochastic foams provide a combination of low weight, high strength-to-weight ratio, high permeability, and low stiffness, which make them desirable materials for a variety of applications. Specifically, their energy absorption capabilities under dynamic compressive loads are desirable. However, under high loading rates there are several challenges in performing accurate simulations of under-dense materials—primarily, the responses of materials with high, low, and zero porosity are difficult to accurately predict with a single model. A general model that tracks porosity and pore geometry and is flexible for a variety of matrix material constitutive responses has yet …

Policing By Proxy: Interrogating Big Tech's Role In Law Enforcement, Claire Elizabeth
Policing By Proxy: Interrogating Big Tech's Role In Law Enforcement, Claire Elizabeth
University Honors Theses
Predictive policing, sometimes referred to as data-driven or actuarial policing, is a method of policing that uses a risk-based approach to law enforcement. For-profit technology companies market proprietary risk assessment algorithms to law enforcement organizations as tools meant to proactively mitigate crime. Using data collected from a vast array of sources, both personal and public, police are able to "predict" the likelihood of criminal activity in a given area using these algorithms. Proponents claim that risk assessment tools have the potential to fight crime with unbiased accuracy and speed by predicting when, where, and whom to police by relying on …

Facebook For Law Enforcement, Stephen Carlisle
Certified Public Manager® Applied Research
This article introduces what some law enforcement agencies have done to mitigate trust issues by utilizing social media as a form of community policing. There is a silent majority out there that support law enforcement. As a pioneer of using Facebook as a platform for community policing, taking criticism from my law enforcement peers was unavoidable. However, these same peers would turn to Facebook shortly after for personal and professional use. The key is to reach out and to educate the public to help gain trust in law enforcement, and using modern social media platforms to reach the masses only …

Why We Should Reuse Wastewater, Bridget Sarver
Why We Should Reuse Wastewater, Bridget Sarver
Certified Public Manager® Applied Research
As population and industry grow, the need to reuse wastewater is growing. Aquifers are often the dominant water supplies to surrounding areas. The levels of those aquifers are declining each year. Water loss affects many things like water wells, lakes, and rivers. Lakes and rivers that are used as water sources are seeing a decline in levels. Low water levels and drought occur because of the changing water cycle. Heavy rain and runoff can help refill lakes and rivers; however precipitation does not always fall back on the area that it evaporated from. By reusing wastewater, we will be saving …

Leadership Through Budgeting: Controlling Taxes And Increasing Services, Tony Sims
Certified Public Manager® Applied Research
Local budgets are the key responsibility of elected and appointed leaders, as are ultimate control over how tax dollars are allocated, and which services are provided to the citizens. Nowhere else is leadership more important than during budget preparation. However, local budgeting is typically more an annual event than an ongoing efficient and effective process. By implementing a budgeting process and preparing a budget in accordance with the criteria required by the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award Program and earning the award, local governments can create more efficient and effective operations, improve public trust, and have …
Grocery Store Transitions To Multi-Ownership: Opportunities And Challenges, Marilyn R. Schlake
Grocery Store Transitions To Multi-Ownership: Opportunities And Challenges, Marilyn R. Schlake
Cornhusker Economics
Independent grocery stores, stores whose owners operate fewer than four outlets, play a vital role in Nebraska communities. These stores help ensure food access for residents, particularly in rural areas. The recent decline in Nebraska’s total number of rural grocery stores is attributed to the closure of these independent stores, which are often owned by individuals or small groups. Finding qualified, motivated owners to purchase and operate independent grocery stores presents pressing challenges for many rural communities. Despite challenges, research shows that rural Nebraska communities perceive their independent grocery store to be an important community amenity. This suggests rural communities …

The Inequalities Of Innovation, Colleen Chien
The Inequalities Of Innovation, Colleen Chien
Faculty Publications
Over the last few decades, the United States has become more innovative, but the gains have been distributed unequally. In 2020, over 50% of new U.S. patents went to the top 1% of patentees, and more than 50% of all patents of U.S. origin were generated by just five states, all coastal. Less than 13% of inventors were women. The economic, geographic, and demographic concentration of innovation highlight how the intersections between two traditionally discrete topics—innovation and inequality—have become increasingly relevant. But rather than any single inequality, this Article argues, multiple inequalities—of income, opportunity, and access—have relevance to innovation. Examining …

This qualitative study explored the perceptions of the impacting factors for MTSS and the needs of building leadership teams through semi-structured interviews using a video conferencing-based online platform. Participants included 15 building administrators from school districts in a mountain west state of the United States. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed through thematic analysis. A total of four themes or impacting factors were identified. First, participants reported that MTSS relies on the district's …
Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton
Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton
Dissertations
Compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are two inter-related concepts. Individuals in helping professions may occasionally face compassion fatigue from giving so much of themselves to others. Compassion fatigue has been studied in a variety of settings: medical, social work, nursing, law enforcement, and fire departments, to name a few. While some researchers have studied nurses, little published work has focused exclusively on nurses who care for specialty pediatric populations. Additionally, there is scant research on whether compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue are associated with patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of compassion satisfaction and …

Lockdown Challenges And Policy Response To The Covid Pandemic For Female Domestic Workers In Egypt, Rafia Mazen
Lockdown Challenges And Policy Response To The Covid Pandemic For Female Domestic Workers In Egypt, Rafia Mazen
Theses and Dissertations
The swift widespread of the Covid-19 virus forced many governments to impose restrictions on movement early in 2020. The unique composition of the informal labor market leaves it vulnerable in face of economic shocks. The fragility of work conditions in the informal market and the absence of social insurance among its participants, left them fending to make ends meet. Paid domestic workers carry the double burden of engaging in the informal market while performing a job that is traditionally associated with women’s unpaid labor. The pandemic has hadunprecedented economic implications; uninsured, unprotected and out of the policy formulators’radar, paid domestic …
Carving Spaces Of An Otherwise Within Urban Uncertainties On Sudanese People On The Move Creating Own Possibilities In Cairo, Iman Mohamed
Carving Spaces Of An Otherwise Within Urban Uncertainties On Sudanese People On The Move Creating Own Possibilities In Cairo, Iman Mohamed
Theses and Dissertations
With the increased urbanization of the world since the 1940s, people continue to be increasingly moving to cities. People are attracted to the city to access services and opportunities. However, the increased presence of persons on the move in the city comes with heightened bordering, augmented policing, and the involvement of more actors in the governance of people on the move. Against this, there are debates around understanding the urban space, its risks, and opportunities for all people dealing with it, including those on the move. This thesis thus looks at the urban space in Cairo that is uncertain, wherein …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Domestication of transposable elements (TEs) into functional cis-regulatory elements is a widespread phenomenon. However, the mechanisms behind why some TEs are co-opted as functional enhancers while others are not are underappreciated. SINE-VNTR-Alus (SVAs) are the youngest group of transposons in the human genome, where ~3,700 copies are annotated, nearly half of which are human-specific. Many studies indicate that SVAs are among the most frequently co-opted TEs in human gene regulation, but the mechanisms underlying such processes have not yet been thoroughly investigated. Here, we leveraged CRISPR-interference (CRISPRi), computational and functional genomics to elucidate the genomic features that underlie SVA domestication …
