Evidence For Multiple Potential Drivers Of Increased Phosphorus In High-Elevation Lakes, J. Scholz, Janice Brahney Jun 2022

Evidence For Multiple Potential Drivers Of Increased Phosphorus In High-Elevation Lakes, J. Scholz, Janice Brahney

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Total phosphorus (TP) concentrations have increased in many remote mountain waterbodies across the western United States, and reports of algal blooms in these systems have increased in frequency. Explanations for observed TP increases are uncertain, and typical landscape drivers, such as agricultural/urban runoff, are implausible. We investigated multiple atmospheric and terrestrial-P loading mechanisms to explain the observed decadal increase in TP, including a novel hypothesis that warming soils may lead to elevated P fluxes to receiving water bodies. Using northern Utah mountains ranges as a case study, we measured prospective inputs of total and bioavailable P via dust deposition. Terrestrial …

Medication Gaps And Antipsychotic Polypharmacy In Previously Hospitalized Schizophrenia Patients: An Electronic Cohort Study In Three Canadian Provinces, Evyn Peters, Arash Shamloo, Rohit J. Lodhi, Gene Marcoux, Kylie Jackson, Shawn Halayka, Lloyd Balbuena Jun 2022

Medication Gaps And Antipsychotic Polypharmacy In Previously Hospitalized Schizophrenia Patients: An Electronic Cohort Study In Three Canadian Provinces, Evyn Peters, Arash Shamloo, Rohit J. Lodhi, Gene Marcoux, Kylie Jackson, Shawn Halayka, Lloyd Balbuena

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Background: Real world evidence about antipsychotics focuses on rehospitalization. Modeling the time course of pharmacotherapy would show patients' adherence to medications and physicians' adherence to medication guidelines. We aimed to calculate the cumulative time spent in second generation antipsychotics (SGAs), gaps, antipsychotic polypharmacy, and clozapine in discharged schizophrenia patients. Methods: Hospitalization and pharmacy dispensing data from 2008–2018 in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia were linked and an electronic cohort (N = 2,997) was created (mean follow-up: 49 months, SD = 38). Cohort members were required to have a minimum of 6 weeks medicated with aripiprazole, olanzapine, paliperidone, quetiapine, risperidone, or …

The Nexus Of The Indoor Co2 Concentration And Ventilation Demands Underlying Co2-Based Demand-Controlled Ventilation In Commercial Buildings: A Critical Review, Xing Lu, Zhihong Pang, Yangyang Fu, Zheng O'Neill Jun 2022

The Nexus Of The Indoor Co2 Concentration And Ventilation Demands Underlying Co2-Based Demand-Controlled Ventilation In Commercial Buildings: A Critical Review, Xing Lu, Zhihong Pang, Yangyang Fu, Zheng O'Neill

Faculty Publications

The carbon dioxide (CO2)-based demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) has attracted prompt attention from the Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) industry since its very first invention. Since then, it has been penetrating from simple single-zone systems to complex system configurations in commercial buildings. While there has accumulated a large number of research on DCV applications, the most recent review paper on this topic was dated back to 2001 and inevitably missed a lot of recent revolutionary technologies. Therefore, to understand the opportunities and challenges associated with the CO2-based DCV, this study presents a timely review on the revolutions of the CO2-based DCV …

A (Partial And Principled) Defense Of Sentences Of Life Imprisonment, Mirko Bagaric, Jennifer Svilar Jun 2022

A (Partial And Principled) Defense Of Sentences Of Life Imprisonment, Mirko Bagaric, Jennifer Svilar

Cleveland State Law Review

There has been more than a five-fold increase in the number of life sentences in the United States over the past four decades. One in seven prisoners in the United States is serving a life (or virtual) life sentence. This amounts to over 200,000 prisoners. The increase has occurred against the backdrop of near universal condemnation by scholars and public policy advocates – many of whom are now advocating for the abolition of life sentences. Arguments that life sentences are not an effective deterrent or means of protecting the community have some merit. Yet, we argue that in a limited …

Actively Achieving Greater Racial Equity In Law School Classrooms, Catherine Bramble, Rory Bahadur Jun 2022

Actively Achieving Greater Racial Equity In Law School Classrooms, Catherine Bramble, Rory Bahadur

Cleveland State Law Review

2020 illustrated the ongoing pervasiveness of implicit and explicit racism in our society. Less well-acknowledged and recognized is the extent to which Socratic pedagogy also reflects those pervasive racist realities while simultaneously resulting in inferior learning based on a teaching method invented 150+ years ago. Despite this racist and outdated reality, the legal academy has been reluctant to alter the traditional method of teaching. Tangible, empirical evidence obtained from data-driven cognitive learning science research demonstrates that active learning not only improves learning outcomes for all students, but also mitigates the structural effects of racism in the classroom thereby increasing racial …
