Identification Of Linear Non-Gaussian Latent Hierarchical Structure, Feng Xie, Biwei Huang, Zhengming Chen, Yangbo He, Zhi Geng, Kun Zhang Jul 2022

Identification Of Linear Non-Gaussian Latent Hierarchical Structure, Feng Xie, Biwei Huang, Zhengming Chen, Yangbo He, Zhi Geng, Kun Zhang

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Traditional causal discovery methods mainly focus on estimating causal relations among measured variables, but in many real-world problems, such as questionnaire-based psychometric studies, measured variables are generated by latent variables that are causally related. Accordingly, this paper investigates the problem of discovering the hidden causal variables and estimating the causal structure, including both the causal relations among latent variables and those between latent and measured variables. We relax the frequently-used measurement assumption and allow the children of latent variables to be latent as well, and hence deal with a specific type of latent hierarchical causal structure. In particular, we define …

Ants And Spices: Multiple Bioassays Investigating Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) And Chili Powder As Repellents For Ants (Formicidae), Luca Ben Yishay-Sapalio

2022 REYES Proceedings

Spices offer an environmentally friendly method of controlling ants (Formicidae) in homes. In this study, I used three bioassays to examine the effect of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and one bioassay to examine the effect of Chili Powder as repellents for ants. Tests were conducted near active ants outdoors. All bioassays examined paired control and treatment baits along a transect, and control baits consisted of a small sheet of corrugated cardboard (a sterile yet easy to manipulate substrate) with granulated sugar on top. In the first bioassay, treatment baits were similar to controls but with Turmeric covering the sugar. …

Understanding Student Perspective’S Around Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Within The School Of Social Work, Anna Yelick, Dee Sherwood

Assessment Grants

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has become a prominent fixture within the social work profession, with educational and professional organizations paying closer attention to issues related to DEI. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the governing body for accrediting social work education programs, has required social work programs to demonstrate a commitment to DEI in their implicit curriculum. Therefore, the School of Social Work is interested in understanding student perspectives and experiences of DEI efforts particularly within the implicit curriculum.

Emotional Intelligence: Benefits Within The Classroom, Taylor M. Garber Jul 2022

Emotional Intelligence: Benefits Within The Classroom, Taylor M. Garber

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Since the pandemic arose in 2020, schools have lived in a world of unknown. From in school classes to online zoom meetings, teachers have had to adjust their teaching methods leaving them burnt out and frustrated. With hopes of breaking through this gray area, introducing the idea of Emotional Intelligence in schools surrounding Valley County, could greatly impact their path back to normalcy. I have created a prototype for schools surrounding my community. With the first launch happening in September, I am hopeful that this prototype can then be used in other schools as well. This project consists of a …

Curriculum Re-Mapping For Fashion Merchandising Program, Zee-Sun Yun, Kelly Weathers, Chitra Singh

Assessment Grants

This project was the re-mapping of the Fashion Merchandising major (FMEJ) curriculum to improve the program curriculum and meet the standards of Textile and Apparel Programs Accreditation Commission (TAPAC) curricula and learning outcomes. The review feedback from diverse professional sources (i.e., the TAPAC committee, program faculty, industry professional, and expert) guided our decision to revise the FMEJ curriculum by proposing new courses, the proper sequencing of fashion merchandising courses, the degree to which the curriculum supports student learning, and the extent to which learning outcomes are appropriately addressed.

The Yeti Tumbler Alliance, Emily Huber Jul 2022

The Yeti Tumbler Alliance, Emily Huber

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

For my Capstone Project I chose a topic that I am passionate about. I truly believe that outdoor recreation is critical to mental health. My family is passionate about rock climbing. I have found that many people find this sport to be inaccessible. Most climbing areas have very difficult climbs or very easy climbs for beginners. My goal was to develop and bolt a climb that is easy for beginners but next to harder climbs so people could take their friends and introduce them to the sport in an environment where everyone can have fun.

I am very happy with …

Africa In Transition -- Nexus Between State Building & Regional Integration, Tenley Erickson Jul 2022

Africa In Transition -- Nexus Between State Building & Regional Integration, Tenley Erickson

Dissertations

Regional integration in Africa is at a nascent stage, despite long-standing interest in continental unification since the Pan-African independence movements. The current surge in continental-wide economic integration builds on previous efforts, yet is markedly different in terms of the ideas, interests, and institutions today. A primary reason for the failure of the first East Africa attempt to integrate was the lack of a strong private sector. Research on African regionalism has focused mostly on limited success, lack of economic growth, and persistent wide-spread poverty. Recent developments present an opportunity to objectively study the gradual evolution in African perspectives and state …

Self-Compassion And Perceived Readiness For Practice Among Baccalaureate Nursing Students: A Mixed-Methods Study, Laurie A. Walter Jul 2022

Self-Compassion And Perceived Readiness For Practice Among Baccalaureate Nursing Students: A Mixed-Methods Study, Laurie A. Walter

Dissertations

There is increasing concern about how nursing students’ psychological health will impact their future nursing practice. The COVID-19 pandemic has enhanced these concerns. Nurse educators are being challenged with preparing nursing students to provide compassionate, patient-centered care despite the stress and psychological challenges of today’s healthcare environment. Self-compassion is a practice of mindfulness, self-kindness, and common humanity which positively influences and predicts psychological health. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between self-compassion and perceived readiness for professional practice among undergraduate nursing students.

A convergent mixed-method design utilizing correlational and directed content analyses explored this relationship. The …

Predictors Of Engagement In Nursing Professional Practice: Transforming Organizational Culture In The Post-Covid Healthcare Environment, Jennifer Garnand Jul 2022

Predictors Of Engagement In Nursing Professional Practice: Transforming Organizational Culture In The Post-Covid Healthcare Environment, Jennifer Garnand

Dissertations

Cultivating the shared belief that individuals matter within an organization enhances the empowerment of staff and supports enthusiastic engagement in organizational efforts aimed toward a common mission, vision, and goals (McShane & Von Glinow, 2019). The nursing profession has been plagued by an unprecedented decrease in engagement and diminished job satisfaction, particularly following the prolonged tenure of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to subsequent attrition amidst a staffing crisis. This quantitative predictive correlational study seeks to determine whether proactive and persevering characteristics, professional identity, and passion of nurses are predictors of engagement in a post-COVID healthcare environment. The research was based …

An Investigation Of Anti-Intellectualism Among Nurses, Jamie Davis-Tubbs Jul 2022

An Investigation Of Anti-Intellectualism Among Nurses, Jamie Davis-Tubbs

Dissertations

Anti-intellectualism is often offered as an explanation for irrational actions, especially in the grips of uncertainty. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have uncovered the consequences of anti-intellectualism within the healthcare system. Nurses, the most identifiability trusted healthcare professionals, have been used to illustrate a healthcare paradox regarding COVID-19. The healthcare paradox presents nurses as highly trained healthcare professionals who do not believe in their own science and reject scientific expertise. Furthermore, nursing anti-intellectualism has been used to spread misinformation during a major health crisis. Yet, we do not know the depth in which anti-intellectualism exists within the nursing profession. …

From The Shadows Of Incarceration To Higher Education: Associated Invisible Identity Development Of College Students With Incarcerated Parents, Andrea Blake Jul 2022

From The Shadows Of Incarceration To Higher Education: Associated Invisible Identity Development Of College Students With Incarcerated Parents, Andrea Blake

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of college students who have experienced parental incarceration and explore how they make meaning of their associated invisible identity in the campus environment at four-year institutions in the U.S. Traditionally socio-historical events and messages about system-impacted individuals, their families, and children have contributed to the invisibility of this population in educational settings. This study employed a narrative inquiry approach. Also, it applied Bronfenbrenner’s (1977, 1979, 1993) ecological model to explore the college experiences of ACIPs while not excluding wider societal and environmental factors that could shape their associated invisible identity …

Relationships Between Monomer Chemical Structure, Network Architecture And Thermal Stability In Glassy Polycyanurates, Rebecca Haber Jul 2022

Relationships Between Monomer Chemical Structure, Network Architecture And Thermal Stability In Glassy Polycyanurates, Rebecca Haber

Dissertations

We study monomer melt properties and polymer properties using two approaches. The first approach takes advantage of molecular dynamics to calculate monomer melt properties. The second approach involved an experimental investigation of polycyanurate networks with varying monomer functionality and rigidity.

For our computational study we applied an existing voids method by Solca et al. to calculate melting temperature for four different cyanate esters: (a) 2’-(4-cyanatophenyl) propane (BADCy), (b) 4,4'-(ethane-1,1-diyl) bis(cyanatobenzene) (LECy), (c) tris(4-cyantophenyl) methylsilane (SiCy-3), and (d) bis(4-cyanatophenyl) dimethylsilane (SiMCy). For systems with 1 to 10% voids, the predicted melting temperature decreased due to a decrease in the free energy …

Incremental Change In Wills Adjudication, Mark Glover Jul 2022

Incremental Change In Wills Adjudication, Mark Glover

Florida State University Law Review

Probate courts must decide which wills are valid and which are not. The traditional law provides courts a straightforward process to make these decisions. If the court determines that a will complies with certain formalities, then the will is valid, but if the court determines that a will does not comply, then it is invalid. This decisionmaking process has been criticized for being overly formalistic. While the traditional law is relatively easy to apply, it places greater importance on the process by which a testator executes a will than on the substance of the testator's intent. Consequently, the traditional wills …

Investigating Counterproductive Work Behavior Motives —— An Attempt To Reveal Underlying Processes Of Counterproductive Behaviors At Work, Siqi Gu Jul 2022

Investigating Counterproductive Work Behavior Motives —— An Attempt To Reveal Underlying Processes Of Counterproductive Behaviors At Work, Siqi Gu

Theses and Dissertations

Counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs) are actions that may harm employees or organizations. Understanding CWB motives may facilitate better conceptualization of different types of CWBs and reveal more about the underlying processes leading to CWBs. However, to date no systematic conceptual frameworks or empirical investigations have been developed to study CWB motives comprehensively. To address this research gap, we proposed a taxonomy of CWB motives based on both theoretical foundations and empirical results. In addition, we aimed to develop a CWB motives measure. The measure development research was carried out in two studies. We found evidence supporting our hypotheses of the …

Is Religion Dividing America Beyond Repair?, Alec Wheeler

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

In 2022, the state of America is highly debated. Are we united? Are we divided? What unites us despite our differences? There have been times of great tribulation in American history, just as there have been times of great unity. Many Americans remember the day after the 9/11 attacks as a day to set our differences aside and help one another. At the beginning of the COVID-19 nationwide lock down there was celebration of healthcare workers and campaigns to help your neighbors out with groceries. During times of tremendous worry and pain, Americans come together through their differences and work …

Using Community-Based Participatory Research To Assess The Needs Of Hiv-Related Services For Infected Individuals In Rural Communities, Elizabeth Brown, Charles Brown, Owen Johnson, Wendelyn Inman, Revlon Briggs, Wanda Burrell, Rosemary Theriot, Elizabeth Williams, Alexis Heaston

Public Health, Health Administration, and Health Sciences Faculty Research

HIV/AIDS remains a significant health concern in rural communities, which may also experience many disparate issues including reduced access to health services (Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). Community efforts should be increased to improve services to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), especially in rural communities. In the state of Tennessee, using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach, a needs assessment was conducted to identify gaps, barriers, and strategies for improving HIV-related comprehensive care services for people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 26 rural counties. The paper describes the CBPR partnership and the needs assessment project that was conducted and …
