Recent genome-wide association studies corroborate classical research on developmental programming indicating that obesity is primarily a neurodevelopmental disease strongly influenced by nutrition during critical ontogenic windows. Epigenetic mechanisms regulate neurodevelopment; however, little is known about their role in establishing and maintaining the brain's energy balance circuitry. We generated neuron and glia methylomes and transcriptomes from male and female mouse hypothalamic arcuate nucleus, a key site for energy balance regulation, at time points spanning the closure of an established critical window for developmental programming of obesity risk. We find that postnatal epigenetic maturation is markedly cell type and sex specific and …

Good Intentions Gone Awry: Privacy As Proportionality Under Rule 26(B)(1), Hon. James C. Francis Iv (Ret.)
San Diego Law Review
Over the past several years, two legal trends have gained momentum. The first is the effort to make discovery in litigation more proportional, culminating in the 2015 amendment to Rule 26(b)(1) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, which includes proportionality in the definition of what information is discoverable. The second is the movement, both in the United States and abroad, toward the greater recognition of individual privacy interests. Some courts and commentators now seek to merge these two trends by advocating that privacy should be considered a factor in analyzing proportionality under Rule 26(b)(1).

Antigone And Les Misérables: A Pathetic Look At Jury Nullification, Andrew Lambert
Antigone And Les Misérables: A Pathetic Look At Jury Nullification, Andrew Lambert
San Diego Law Review
This paper considers whether and why criminal juries choose to "nullify" a verdict by acquitting the defendant despite the prosecution proving its case beyond a reasonable doubt. To examine jury nullification, this paper turns to two pieces of theater - Antigone and Les Misérables. In each play, the protagonist is unquestionably guilty of a crime but the audience champions them anyway. Examining why audiences absolve the protagonists explains why juries acquit otherwise guilty defendants.

From Bus Bans On Religious Advertisements To Beyond: Why Religion Is More Appropriately Classified As A Viewpoint Rather Than A Subject Matter, Anna Kukharenok
San Diego Law Review
This circuit split created the issue identified herein: Is a ban on religious advertisements—aimed at all religions equally—permissible because it constitutes a restriction of a subject matter, or is it impermissible because it constitutes restriction of a viewpoint? This narrow issue implies the existence of a broader issue: Should religion as a whole be classified as a subject matter or a viewpoint in order to avoid laborious and fact-intensive inquiries into each particular law? This Comment aims to answer this question through the lens of not only legal precedent, but policy perspectives as well. This Comment advances the position that …

Ultrafast Laser Direct Writing Of Conductive Patterns On Polyimide Substrate, Ishrat Jahan Biswas, Enrique Contreras Lopez, Farid Ahmed, Jianzhi Li
Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications
Laser direct writing (LDW) is a fast and cost-effective method for printing conductive patterns in flexible polymer substrates. The electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties of polyimide (PI) make it an attractive material choice for laser writing of conductive circuits in such polymer. Electrically insulating PI has shown great potential for flexible printed electronics as LDW enables selective carbonization in the bulk of such material leading to the formation of conductive lines. However, existing studies in this area reveal a few key limitations of this approach including limited conductivity of written structures and fragility of carbonized PI. Therefore, more research is …

Background: In medical genetics, discovery and characterization of disease trait contributory genes and alleles depends on genetic reasoning, study design, and patient ascertainment; we suggest a segmental haploid genetics approach to enhance gene discovery and molecular diagnostics.
Methods: We constructed a genome-wide map for nonallelic homologous recombination (NAHR)-mediated recurrent genomic deletions and used this map to estimate population frequencies of NAHR deletions based on large-scale population cohorts and region-specific studies. We calculated recessive disease carrier burden using high-quality pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants from ClinVar and gnomAD. We developed a NIRD (NAHR deletion Impact to Recessive Disease) score for recessive …
