Best Practices For Reducing Construction Accidents Involving Hispanic Construction Workers, Michael E. Asuquo, Khalid Siddiqi Sep 2022

Best Practices For Reducing Construction Accidents Involving Hispanic Construction Workers, Michael E. Asuquo, Khalid Siddiqi

The Professional Constructor

The objective of this study was to determine best practices for reducing accidents among Hispanic construction workers. It was hypothesized that language barrier between the Hispanics and American workers contributed immensely to high rate of construction accidents on industrial projects. Accident case studies and questionnaire survey were both used. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with Hispanic workers involved in industrial construction projects in Metro Atlanta. Findings from the study concluded that most accidents involving Hispanic workers were caused due to lack of communication from supervisors, ignorance of workers on work procedures, lack of equipment training, and worker negligence. Language …

Construction Management Internship: A Key Opportunity For Assessment And Continuous Curriculum Improvement, James S. Vaux, Bree Dority, Dana E. Vaux

The Professional Constructor

The internship is an integral part of most Construction Management curricula. Studies have noted the importance and reciprocal value of internships for the student, the employer, and the academic program. However, to date, no studies have specifically outlined the value internships provide to the CM program for assessment and evaluation. This paper examines the value of the CM internship as an indirect measure to assess and incorporate change into program curricula. With 10 years of qualitative and quantitative data collected from CM student interns, industry employers, and university internship supervisors, this study supports that CM internships are a valuable tool …

Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) reflects kidney function. Progressive eGFR-decline can lead to kidney failure, necessitating dialysis or transplantation. Hundreds of loci from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for eGFR help explain population cross section variability. Since the contribution of these or other loci to eGFR-decline remains largely unknown, we derived GWAS for annual eGFR-decline and meta-analyzed 62 longitudinal studies with eGFR assessed twice over time in all 343,339 individuals and in high-risk groups. We also explored different covariate adjustment. Twelve genome-wide significant independent variants for eGFR-decline unadjusted or adjusted for eGFR-baseline (11 novel, one known for this phenotype), including nine …

INTRODUCTION: Complete pathologic response (CPR) is an acceptable surrogate for survival in clinical trials but it occurs infrequently in patients with NSCLC receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT). Therefore, we studied the impact of major pathologic response (MPR) for predicting survival of patients with NSCLC receiving NCT. We also tested a newly reported scoring system-the prognostic score (PRSC)-which combines T category, lymph node status, and MPR status.

METHODS: We analyzed CPR and MPR, defined as 0% and less than or equal to 10% viable tumor cells, respectively, in 339 patients with NSCLC with various histologic types who had been treated with NCT …

Confirming Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Induction In The Endovascular Puncture Mouse Model, Ari Dienel, Sung-Ha Hong, Jose Guzman, Kumar T Peeyush, Spiros L Blackburn, Devin W Mcbride

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background and purpose: Experimental studies of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) using the endovascular perforation model routinely use either cerebral blood flow (CBF) or intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring to confirm SAH induction. We designed this study to test the hypothesis that contralateral CBF is a better marker of SAH induction than ipsilateral CBF.

Methods: Sixty-eight adult C57BL/6J mice were subjected to endovascular perforation. Mice were monitored using laser Doppler (for relative CBF) or ICP probes.

Results: The ipsilateral CBF significantly decreased prior to ICP rising. However, reduction of the CBF in the contralateral hemisphere occurred at the same time as the rise …

Nanoparticle-assisted laser-induced photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising method for cancer treatment; yet, visualization of nanoparticle uptake and photothermal response remain a critical challenge. Here, we report a magnetic resonance imaging-active nanomatryoshka (Gd2O3-NM), a multilayered (Au core/Gd2O3 shell/Au shell) sub-100 nm nanoparticle capable of combining T1 MRI contrast with PTT. This bifunctional nanoparticle demonstrates an r1 of 1.28 × 108 mM-1 s-1, an MRI contrast enhancement per nanoparticle sufficient for T1 imaging in addition to tumor ablation. Gd2O3-NM also shows excellent stability in an acidic environment, retaining 99% of the internal Gd(3). This report details the synthesis and characterization of …

Crafting Strategy For Irregular Warfare: A Framework For Analysis And Action (2nd Edition), David H. Ucko, Thomas A. Marks

Strategic Monographs

The United States, and the West, struggle to understand and respond to irregular warfare, whether by states or nonstate actors. Attempts to master the art have generated much new jargon, ranging from “hybrid war” to “the gray zone,” and most recently “integrated deterrence.” The terminology belies a struggle to overcome entrenched presumptions about war—a confusion that generates cognitive friction with implications for strategy. To inform a better approach, this monograph presents an analytical framework to assess and respond to irregular threats.

The problem of loss circulation in geothermal wells is inherently challenging due to high temperatures, brittle rocks, and presence of abundant fractures. Because of the inherent challenges in geothermal environments, there are limitations in selecting proper lost circulation materials (LCMs). Traditional LCMs such as calcium carbonates that are commonly used in the oil and gas drilling may be softened and prone to failure during geothermal drilling. Moreover, evaluating the performance of different LCMs for geothermal drilling requires unique testing setups, which is expensive, and complicated to run due to harsh environmental conditions of geothermal systems. Herein, we present a numerical …

Inorganic lead-halide perovskite, cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3), shows outstanding optoelectronic properties. Both solution- and melt-based methods have been proposed for CsPbBr3 crystal growth. The solution-based growth was done at low-temperature, whereas the melt-based growth was done at high-temperature. However, the comparison of optical, physical, and defect states using these two different growth conditions has been scarcely studied. Here, we have compared the thermal and optical properties of solution-grown and melt-grown single crystals of CsPbBr3. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) analysis showed that melt-grown crystal has a relatively smaller number of defects than the chemical synthesis method. In addition, crystals grown …

Multi-Objective Optimization Of Aquifer Storage And Recovery Operations Under Uncertainty Via Machine Learning Surrogates, Hamid Vahdat-Aboueshagh, Frank T.C. Tsai, Emad Habib, T. Prabhakar Clement

Faculty Publications

Aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) is an important water management approach to store excess surface water into aquifers for later use. Quantitative evaluation of ASR performance is not a trivial task and yet becomes more exacting when uncertainty analysis is added to the dimensionality of the problem. Inclusion of uncertainty into the framework of scheduling optimal ASR operations also increases the level of complexity. This study integrates a surrogate modeling approach coupled with a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) algorithm to optimize multi-objective ASR operations. The uncertainties are analyzed based upon a thorough sampling of the parameters space as well …

Taxing Risky Development: A New Tool For Increasing Coastal Resilience, James Daher Sep 2022

Taxing Risky Development: A New Tool For Increasing Coastal Resilience, James Daher

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

Coastal overdevelopment in the United States is a persistent issue. Climate change continues to increase the risk of flooding and other damage from natural disasters facing many coastal communities. Yet, development in some of the most at-risk areas has not slowed. Policies at the federal government level have encouraged such development by shifting costs of flood-related property damage from the property owner to taxpayers. At the same time, government actors at all levels are actively trying to protect their coastlines through coastal resilience projects. However, there are not enough funds to protect coastal property, especially at the state and local …

Generalization Of Bi-Canonical Degrees, Joseph Brennan, Laura Ghezzi, Jooyoun Hong, Wolmer Vasconcelos

Publications and Research

We discuss invariants of Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit a canonical module ω. Attached to each such ring R, when ω is an ideal, there are integers–the type of R, the reduction number of ω–that provide valuable metrics to express the deviation of R from being a Gorenstein ring. In (Ghezzi et al. in JMS 589:506–528, 2017) and (Ghezzi et al. in JMS 571:55–74, 2021) we enlarged this list with the canonical degree and the bi-canonical degree. In this work we extend the bi-canonical degree to rings where ω is not necessarily an ideal. We also discuss generalizations to rings …

Is It Time To Bury Barry? Why An Old Change At The Legislature Requires A New Look At Washington's Nondelegation Doctrine, Daniel A. Himebaugh

Washington Law Review Online

Fifty years ago, the Supreme Court of Washington adopted a relaxed version of the nondelegation doctrine in a case called Barry and Barry v. Department of Motor Vehicles. The Barry rule, which only loosely restricts the delegation of policy-making power from the Legislature to other bodies, is now widely applied in Washington State. However, the Barry Court’s reasons for adjusting the nondelegation doctrine were based on an outdated understanding of the Legislature, especially its regular session schedule. While the Legislature’s regular sessions have changed since 1972—becoming longer and more frequent due to constitutional amendment—the Court has not considered how …
