New Equations For Hydrostatic Weighing Without Head Submersion, Jeff C. Tesch, Panayiotis Papadopoulos, Forrest Dolgener, Grant M. Tinsley

Faculty Publications

New equations were derived to predict the density of the body (DB) by hydrostatic weighing with the head above water (HWHAW). Hydrostatic weighing with the head below water (HWHBW) was the criterion for DB measurement in 90 subjects (44 M, 46 F). Head volume by immersion (HVIMM) was determined by subtracting the mass in water with the head below water (MWHBW) from the mass in water with the head above water (MWHAW), with subjects at residual lung volume. Equations were derived for head volume prediction (HVPRED) from head measurements and used to correct DB by HWHAW. Equations were also derived …

A Multi-Objective Optimization Model For Evse Deployment At Workplaces With Smart Charging Strategies And Scheduling Policies, Nuh Erdogan, Sadik Kucuksari, Jimmy Murphy Sep 2022

A Multi-Objective Optimization Model For Evse Deployment At Workplaces With Smart Charging Strategies And Scheduling Policies, Nuh Erdogan, Sadik Kucuksari, Jimmy Murphy

Faculty Publications

This study proposes a multi-objective optimization model to determine the optimal charging infrastructure for a transition to plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) at workplaces. The developed model considers all cost aspects of a workplace charging station, i.e., daily levelized electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) infrastructure cost, PEV energy and demand charges. These single-objective functions are aggregated in a multi-objective optimization framework to find the Pareto optimal solutions. Smart charging strategies with interrupted and uninterrupted power profiles are proposed to maximize the use of EVSE units. The charging behavior model is developed based on collected workplace charging data. The model is tested …

Background:The adverse impact of COVID-19 on marginalized and under-resourced communities of color has highlighted the need for accurate, comprehensive race and ethnicity data. However, a significant technical challenge related to integrating race and ethnicity data in large, consolidated databases is the lack of consistency in how data about race and ethnicity are collected and structured by health care organizations.

Objective:This study aims to evaluate and describe variations in how health care systems collect and report information about the race and ethnicity of their patients and to assess how well these data are integrated when aggregated into a large clinical database. …

Evaluating The Effect Of San Francisco’S Paid Parental Leave Ordinance On Birth Outcomesf, Deborah Karasek, Sarah Raifman, Rita Hamad, William H. Dow, Julia M. Goodman Sep 2022

Evaluating The Effect Of San Francisco’S Paid Parental Leave Ordinance On Birth Outcomesf, Deborah Karasek, Sarah Raifman, Rita Hamad, William H. Dow, Julia M. Goodman

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since 2017, San Francisco’s Paid Parental Leave Ordinance (PPLO) has allowed parents who work for private-sector employers to take 6 weeks of fully paid postnatal parental leave. Previous studies have linked paid parental leave with health improvements for birthing people and babies, although evidence for birth outcomes is limited. We hypothesized that the PPLO may have improved birth outcomes via reduced stress during pregnancy due to anticipation of increased financial security and postnatal leave. We used linked California birth certificate and hospital discharge records from January 2013 to December 2018 (n = 1,420,781). We used quasi-experimental difference-in-difference (DD) models to …

This study aimed to determine predictive models that would identify the most important predictor variables for students in the lowest proficiency group in public schools and private schools. After experimenting with different machine learning approaches, the random forest classifier (SVM) models were found to perform most accurately (Lundberg & Lee, 2017). To identify the most important predictors of being a poor performer in mathematics, Shapley values were generated, which produces a ranked list of several features in descending order. To manage complexity in comparing the key variables for private and public student performance classification, the 10 most significant features for …

Tax Risk, Corporate Governance, And The Valuation Of Tax Avoidance Across Philippine Firms: How Do Investors Value Corporate Tax Avoidance?, Christine E. Ang, Shawn Luther S. Chan, Sean Ellison G. Sow, Siegwald K. Yap, Madeleine B. Estabillo, Anne Go, Angelo A. Unite

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

Tax avoidance has traditionally been thought to enhance firm value because it generates cash savings for reinvestment or distribution to shareholders. More recent literature, however, suggests that tax avoidance valuation may not be so simple. Desai and Dharmapala (2009) introduced the “agency perspective” on tax avoidance, arguing that investors consider the risk of tax avoidance as opening opportunities for managers to extract rents from their firms. Positive tax avoidance value would therefore be conditional on good corporate governance quality. Drake et al. (2017) introduced yet another dimension—tax risk—to the valuation of tax avoidance, arguing that tax avoidance that comes with …

A Method To Develop A Statewide Resource Guide, Needs Assessment, And Service Inventory To Respond To Human Trafficking, Andrea Nichols, Kathleen Preble

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The extant research literature indicates that human trafficking survivors have a myriad of service needs, including acute and long-term needs. A statewide resource guide, needs assessment, and service inventory were developed for Missouri through community action research involving a partnership with an anti-trafficking coalition, a consortium of funders, and a series of small research teams. This article details the evolution of a resource guide and describes the methods used to 1) develop a statewide resource guide for human trafficking survivors and the service providers who work with them, 2) evaluate the resource guide, 3) create a statewide/regional service inventory based …
