Nanoparticle-assisted laser-induced photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising method for cancer treatment; yet, visualization of nanoparticle uptake and photothermal response remain a critical challenge. Here, we report a magnetic resonance imaging-active nanomatryoshka (Gd2O3-NM), a multilayered (Au core/Gd2O3 shell/Au shell) sub-100 nm nanoparticle capable of combining T1 MRI contrast with PTT. This bifunctional nanoparticle demonstrates an r1 of 1.28 × 108 mM-1 s-1, an MRI contrast enhancement per nanoparticle sufficient for T1 imaging in addition to tumor ablation. Gd2O3-NM also shows excellent stability in an acidic environment, retaining 99% of the internal Gd(3). This report details the synthesis and characterization of …

PURPOSE: To develop an automated workflow for rectal cancer three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) treatment planning that combines deep learning (DL) aperture predictions and forward-planning algorithms.
METHODS: We designed an algorithm to automate the clinical workflow for 3DCRT planning with field aperture creations and field-in-field (FIF) planning. DL models (DeepLabV3+ architecture) were trained, validated, and tested on 555 patients to automatically generate aperture shapes for primary (posterior-anterior [PA] and opposed laterals) and boost fields. Network inputs were digitally reconstructed radiographs, gross tumor volume (GTV), and nodal GTV. A physician scored each aperture for 20 patients on a 5-point scale (>3 …

By using a novel multispectral imaging technology, the 2-D distributions of flame temperature and emissivity were measured in a 16 MW incinerator to co-fire municipal solid waste (MSW) and municipal sludge. A way to establish the relationship between the multispectral flame images and the temperature was proposed by combing the Newton iteration method and Hottel emissivity model. The results showed that the measured temperatures at different locations varied by 31.25% with a fixed steam evaporation rate, and 11.76% with different steam evaporation rates at a given port. The temperatures and emissivities decreased at upper locations due to the lower local …

This chapter centers on the experience of four Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) academic librarians who conceived, planned, and executed a local one-day in-person summit for BIPOC information workers in 2018 and an online version in 2021. The POCinLIS Summit celebrated and uplifted BIPOC information workers from the public, private and academic fields of LIS. Since libraries were established, information systems and institutions have prioritized and normalized whiteness. To amplify and bolster BIPOC siloed in their work, the Summit sought to create counterspaces unaffiliated with a professional organization or traditional LIS conference spaces. To address why BIPOC-centered programs are …

Regulatory Compliance Of Labels And Product Information Leaflets For Medicines Distributed In The Private Sector In South Sudan, Stephen Mawa, Zita Ekeocha, Stephen Byrn, Kari Clase
BIRS Africa Technical Report Papers
Patient information leaflets (PILs) and labels are important for rational use of medicines as they provide additional information for patients on the medicines dispensed to them. In developing countries, this potential cannot be fully harnessed unless manufacturers provide medicines with labels and PILs that meet regulatory standards for content and user-friendliness. In South Sudan, it is not known if manufacturers uphold standards of these labels and PILs once their products are approved for distribution in the country.
This study explored the degree to which medicines distributed in South Sudan comply with regulatory requirements for labels and PILs. A cross-sectional survey …

Development Of An Assessment Tool For Good Distribution Practice For A Regulatory Agency In West Africa, Ukamaka Gladys Okafor, Zita Ekeocha, Stephen Byrn, Kari Clase, Solomon Shiihii
BIRS Africa Technical Report Papers
Good Distribution Practice (GDP) refers to the regulatory guidelines governing the wholesale and distribution of medicinal products to ensure that their quality and integrity are maintained throughout the supply chain from the manufacturer to the end users. A standard assessment tool for GDP is necessary in order to conduct a robust assessment on GDP on pharmaceutical industries. The observed agency’s policy and operational documents in addition to GDP Guidelines from World Health Organization and related organizations from various countries were reviewed. The observed Regulatory Agency does not have a separate assessment tool for GDP inspection. Few core GDP parameters are …

50 Tips For Traveling Responsibly, Ailin Fei, Jonathon Day
Tourism Insights
Travel is one of the great things in life. Nothing beats the thrill of seeing new things, exploring new cultures or experiencing things you just can't do at home.
Despite the benefits of travel, more people are becoming concerned that our travel is having negative impacts on the people and places we visit. We worry that we will love our special places to death. In fact, recent research conducted by Booking.com shows that "83% of global travelers think sustainable travel is vital" and of the more than 29,000 travelers surveyed across 30 countries, 72% believe that we need to act …

There is zero tolerance for dicamba and dicamba metabolite residue in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) fruit following exposure to dicamba. Field trials were conducted in 2020 and 2021 to determine the persistence of dicamba and metabolite (5-hydroxy dicamba and 3,6-dichlorosalicylic acid [DCSA]) residue in processing tomato shoots and fruits. Dicamba was applied 49 d after transplanting at 0, 0.53, 5.3, and 53 g ae ha−1. Tomato plants were harvested 5, 10, 20, 40, and 61 d after treatment (DAT). No 5-hydroxy dicamba was recovered from any sample. In 2020, the DCSA metabolite was detected from tomato shoot tissue when dicamba …
Unclean Patents, Sean B. Seymore
Unclean Patents, Sean B. Seymore
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The doctrine of unclean hands is perhaps the most storied affirmative defense in civil cases. It allows a court to dismiss a lawsuit without reaching the merits if the patent owner (patentee) engaged in misconduct related to the claim being asserted. In patent law, the Supreme Court has stated that the doctrine is of "paramount interest" given the nature of the patent bargain between the inventor and the public. Nonetheless, unclean hands has been a relatively dormant defense in patent cases, other than in the specific context of patent procurement at the Patent Office (where it has evolved into the …

Re-Presenting The Un-Presentable: Annie Ernaux’S "L’Évènement" And Cristian Mungiu’S "4 Months, 3 Weeks, And Two Days", Victoria Tomasulo
Publications and Research
Situating Annie Ernaux’s L’évènement and Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days in a reproductive justice framework, I argue that both the memoir and the film contribute to working-class historiographies by documenting backstreet abortion in times and places where it was heavily criminalized: 1960s France and Communist Romania. Committed to a working-class aesthetic with roots in neorealism, Ernaux and Mungiu focus singularly on an event once deemed unrepresentable in literature and cinema. Drawing upon the distinction made between empathy and “rational compassion” made by Paul Bloom in Against Empathy (2016), as well as from Kelly Oliver’s Witnessing: Beyond …

A Student-Designed Learning Management System: A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of Undergraduate Student Ideas For Improving The Lms, Erin P. Manott Morris
Dissertations
Learning management systems (LMS) are digital tools used to comprehensively deliver education in various settings, including higher education. Using LMSs has been shown to support learner-centered instructional practices and, when used well, to support positive learning outcomes in students. While previous research has examined student use and satisfaction with an LMS, little research has explored student perceptions regarding LMS design. The study evaluated undergraduate students’ perceptions and opinions of an LMS’s design. The study also sought to compare students’ attitudes regarding their LMS during pre-COVID and following the pandemic’s onset. Forty-five students participated in a survey, and three participated in …

Subtropical humid grazing lands represent a large global land use and are important for livestock production, as well as supplying multiple ecosystem services. Patch-burn grazing (PBG) management is applied in temperate grazing lands to enhance environmental and economic sustainability; however, this management system has not been widely tested in subtropical humid grazing lands. The objective of this study was to determine how PBG affected forage resources, in comparison with the business-as-usual full-burn (FB) management in both intensively managed pastures (IMP) and seminative (SN) pastures in subtropical humid grazinglands. We hypothesized that PBG management would create patch contrasts in forage quantity …

Rationale: Few case series have described the simultaneous development of angioedema in patients with coronavirus 19 disease (COVID-19). Most of these reports were described in at-risk patients for developing bradykinin angioedema. Therefore, we aim to describe 5 African American patients who developed simultaneous COVID-19 and angioedema.
Methods: This was a case series of hospitalized patients with simultaneous angioedema and COVID-19 infection in a single center from May 2020 to February 2022. We used descriptive statistics. The study was approved by the institutional review board.
Results: Their median age was 55 years (range 28-66); all patients were African American, and 3/5 …
