70 Years Of Dance: Copyrighting Choreography Since 1952, Annie Planker
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog
Choreography has long been a subject of controversy in the world of copyright. Despite its significance in the artistic community and the rise of social media in our everyday lives, choreography has not received the same property protections as other artforms, such as music, painting or sculpture. This is partly due to the transient nature of choreography; copyright law requires “fixed expressions” of works. It is also due to a legal hesitation to limit “social” arts. Lawmakers have little desire to prohibit large masses from participating in cultural activities.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that affects ~100,000 Americans (1, 2). In SCD, red blood cells (RBC) containing aberrant sickle hemoglobin (HgbS) become sickle-shaped at low oxygen tension and stick together leading to obstructed blood flow. The resulting decrease in tissue oxygenation causes chronic complications such as vasculo-occlusive pain crises among others that require frequent hospitalizations (3). Chronic RBC transfusions play a prominent role in the treatment of this disease by improving oxygenation through addition of normal RBC and dilution of RBC containing HgbS (4, 5). However, the major disadvantage of management with simple transfusion is …

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome With Endometrial Hyperplasia And Uterine Fibroids Treated With Homoeopathy: A Case Report, Vaishali Shinde
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Introduction: Any circumstance that alters the balance of oestrogen and progesterone leads to excessive, prolonged estrogenic stimulation, or preventing the counteracting effects of progesterone causing various pathological conditions in the reproductive system, as a result. Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) have mostly anovulatory cycles and low serum progesterone levels. Endometrial hyperplasia is most often due to excess oestrogen without progesterone. The clinical significance of chronic oestrogen secretion is an increased risk of endometrial hyperplasia. A striking feature of uterine fibroids (UFs) is their dependency on the ovarian oestrogen and progesterone. Existing treatments are mostly directed at the symptoms …

Morphogenetic events during the development of the fetal ovary are crucial to the establishment of female fertility. However, the effects of structural rearrangements of the ovary and surrounding reproductive tissues on ovary morphogenesis remain largely uncharacterized. Using tissue clearing and lightsheet microscopy, we found that ovary folding correlated with regionalization into cortex and medulla. Relocation of the oviduct to the ventral aspect of the ovary led to ovary encapsulation, and mutual attachment of the ovary and oviduct to the cranial suspensory ligament likely triggered ovary folding. During this process, the rete ovarii (RO) elaborated into a convoluted tubular structure extending …

Molecular Pathways Enhance Drug Response Prediction Using Transfer Learning From Cell Lines To Tumors And Patient-Derived Xenografts, Yi-Ching Tang, Reid T Powell, Assaf Gottlieb
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Computational models have been successful in predicting drug sensitivity in cancer cell line data, creating an opportunity to guide precision medicine. However, translating these models to tumors remains challenging. We propose a new transfer learning workflow that transfers drug sensitivity predicting models from large-scale cancer cell lines to both tumors and patient derived xenografts based on molecular pathways derived from genomic features. We further compute feature importance to identify pathways most important to drug response prediction. We obtained good performance on tumors (AUROC = 0.77) and patient derived xenografts from triple negative breast cancers (RMSE = 0.11). Using feature importance, …

Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) has spilled over to many species, including humans, where the host range variant coronavirus OC43 is endemic. The balance of the opposing activities of the surface spike (S) and hemagglutinin-esterase (HE) glycoproteins controls BCoV avidity, which is critical for interspecies transmission and host adaptation. Here, 78 genomes were sequenced directly from clinical samples collected between 2013 and 2022 from cattle in 12 states, primarily in the Midwestern U.S. Relatively little genetic diversity was observed, with genomes having >98% nucleotide identity. Eleven isolates collected between 2020 and 2022 from four states (Nebraska, Colorado, California, and Wisconsin) contained a …

Instructors use a variety of online formative assessment (FA) activities to support learning outside class. Previous studies have revealed barriers for students in online courses, but little is known about the barriers students experience when completing online FA assignments. Understanding these barriers to access is critical to fostering more inclusive learning for all students. Using a framework from previous work in online learning, we examined student perceptions of online FA access with respect to five barrier categories: technical resources, instructor organization, social interactions, personal engagement, and learning environment. We developed and administered a survey to more than 1,200 undergraduate biology …

Design Of An Innovative Hybrid Sandwich Protective Device For Offshore Structures, Hozhabr Mozafari, Fabio Distefano, Gabriella Epasto, Linxia Gu, Emanoil Linul, Vincenzo Crupi
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Lightweight foam sandwich structures have excellent energy absorption capacity, combined with good mechanical properties and low density. The main goal of this study is to test the application of an innovative hybrid sandwich protective device in an offshore wind turbine (OWT). The results are useful for offshore structure applications. Different lightweight materials (aluminum foam, agglomerated cork, and polyurethane foam) were investigated using experimental tests and numerical simulations. Closed-cell aluminum foam showed the best performance in terms of the energy absorption capacity during an impact. As such, a Metallic Foam Shell (MFS) device was proposed for the fender of offshore wind …

Black Carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) was imported to the USA to control aquaculture pond snails. This species has escaped captivity and occurs in parts of the Mississippi River, several tributaries, and floodplain lakes, which is concerning due to potential competition with native fishes and predation on native mussels, many of which are imperiled. However, Black Carp captures have primarily been incidental by commercial fishers, and evidence of reproduction in the wild is limited. The objectives of this study were to assess relative abundance of aquaculture- origin and wild Black Carp using ploidy and otolith stable isotope analysis, identify spatial …

Heterotrimeric G proteins couple activated G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) to intracellular signaling pathways. They can also function independently of GPCR activation upon acquiring mutations that prevent GTPase activity and result in constitutive signaling, as occurs with the αqQ209L mutation in uveal melanoma. YM-254890 (YM) can inhibit signaling by both GPCR-activated WT αq and GPCR-independent αqQ209L. Although YM inhibits WT αq by binding to αq-GDP and preventing GDP/GTP exchange, the mechanism of YM inhibition of cellular αqQ209L remains to be fully understood. Here, we show that YM promotes a subcellular redistribution of αqQ209L from the plasma membrane (PM) to the cytoplasm. …

The interaction of intense light with matter gives rise to competing nonlinear responses that can dynamically change material properties. Prominent examples are saturable absorption (SA) and two-photon absorption (TPA), which dynamically increase and decrease the transmission of a sample depending on pulse intensity, respectively. The availability of intense soft X-ray pulses from free-electron lasers (FELs) has led to observations of SA and TPA in separate experiments, leaving open questions about the possible interplay between and relative strength of the two phenomena. Here, we systematically study both phenomena in one experiment by exposing graphite films to soft X-ray FEL pulses of …

A highly efficient synthesis reaction of carboxylic anhydrides catalyzed by triphenylphosphine oxide is described for the quick synthesis of a range of symmetric carboxylic anhydrides and cyclic anhydrides under mild and neutral conditions with a high yield. The system adopts the strong reactive intermediate Ph3PCl2 as the catalyst of carboxylic acid salt; driven by catalytic reaction, the synthesis takes a relatively short time to complete.

We prove a range of Lp bounds for singular Brascamp-Lieb forms with cubical structure. We pass through sparse and local bounds, the latter proved by an iteration of Fourier expansion, telescoping, and the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. We allow 2m−1 < p ≤ ∞ with m the dimension of the cube, extending an earlier result that required p = 2m. The threshold 2m−1 is sharp in our theorems.

Lung cancer is a highly aggressive and metastatic disease responsible for approximately 25% of all cancer-related deaths in the United States. Using high-throughput in vitro and in vivo screens, we have previously established Impad1 as a driver of lung cancer invasion and metastasis. Here we elucidate that Impad1 is a direct target of the epithelial microRNAs (miRNAs) miR-200 and miR∼96 and is de-repressed during epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT); thus, we establish a mode of regulation of the protein. Impad1 modulates Golgi apparatus morphology and vesicular trafficking through its interaction with a trafficking protein, Syt11. These changes in Golgi apparatus dynamics alter …

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is regulated primarily through aqueous humor production by ciliary body and drainage through uveoscleral and trabecular meshwork (TM) tissues. The goal of this study was to measure the effect of non-psychotropic cannabidiol (CBD) on aqueous humor outflow through TM and assess the effect of CBD on the TM cell signaling pathways that are important for regulating outflow. Perfused porcine eye anterior segment explants were used to investigate the effects of CBD on aqueous humor outflow. Cultured porcine TM cells were used to study the effects of CBD on TM cell contractility, myosin light chain (MLC) and myosin …
