A Study On The Hierarchical Control Structure Of The Islanded Microgrid, Fahad Shumran Alshammari
A Study On The Hierarchical Control Structure Of The Islanded Microgrid, Fahad Shumran Alshammari
Dissertations (1934 -)
The microgrid is essential in promoting the power system’s resilience through its ability to host small-scale DG units. Furthermore, the microgrid can isolate itself during main grid faults and supply its demands. However, islanded operation of the microgrid is challenging due to difficulties in frequency and voltage control. In islanded mode, grid-forming units collaborate to control the frequency and voltage. A hierarchical control structure employing the droop control technique provides these control objectives in three consecutive levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary. However, challenges associated with DG units in the vicinity of distribution networks limit the effectiveness of the islanded mode …
Kinetics Of Isotope-Labeled Pathways In The Ozone Forming Recombination Reaction, Elizaveta Grushnikova
Kinetics Of Isotope-Labeled Pathways In The Ozone Forming Recombination Reaction, Elizaveta Grushnikova
Dissertations (1934 -)
The ozone layer in Earth’s atmosphere is unique and plays a vital role in the development of life. Studying the mechanism behind ozone formation helps us understand the development of our planet’s atmosphere. We focus here on the anomalous mass-independent isotope effect.1 In 1981, Mauersberger et al.2 performed an experiment using weather balloons, resulting in the discovery of the anomalous isotope effect for ozone formation. Since then, other chemists have continued to investigate the theory behind this phenomenon. To understand the nature of the isotope effect, we must consider all stages of ozone formation. The basic reaction for ozone formation …
The Ventral Hippocampus Dynamically Regulates Amygdala Encoding And Learned Fear, Matthew Richard Herbst
The Ventral Hippocampus Dynamically Regulates Amygdala Encoding And Learned Fear, Matthew Richard Herbst
Dissertations (1934 -)
The nervous system has evolved a set of survival circuits optimized to respond to environmental threats. Adaptive threat responding requires learning to predict when and where a threat may occur based on available cues. Such learning depends on a distributed network of brain structures, but there is much we do not understand about how these brain areas interact to support fear memory. Addressing this gap is crucial for understanding anxiety- and fear-related disorders as dysfunction in fear learning networks is implicated in the development and persistence of pathological fear states. In my dissertation work, I used a rodent model of …
Graph Neural Networks For Inverse Problems With Flexible Meshes, William Herzberg
Graph Neural Networks For Inverse Problems With Flexible Meshes, William Herzberg
Dissertations (1934 -)
This thesis addresses the electrical impedance tomography (EIT) image reconstruction problem where samples may have irregular discretizations and presents two, new, learned reconstruction algorithms which leverage a graph framework. These new frameworks consider the irregular, non-uniform data as a graph thus allowing graph neural networks to be applied directly to the data defined over irregular meshes. Currently in imaging, convolutional neural networks are used most frequently in learned methods because they are spatially invariant and have the ability to leverage localized information. In addition, many images are represented by rows and columns of uniformly sized pixels which can easily be …
Predicting Mental Health Crisis In Veterans: Early Warning Signs, Precursors And Protective Factors, Priyanka Annapureddy
Predicting Mental Health Crisis In Veterans: Early Warning Signs, Precursors And Protective Factors, Priyanka Annapureddy
Dissertations (1934 -)
Mental Health (MH) conditions have recently increased to a large extent due to socio-demographic changes. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is one of the most common mental health disorders prevalent in US. PTSD is even more troubling at double the rate in combat veterans leaving their service compared to general population. Severity of PTSD is associated with risk taking behaviors such as substance abuse, non-suicidal self-injury, and sexual risk behaviors. Psychological disorders are often preceded by early warning signs and recognizing the early warning signs of PTSD will help in preventing the returning or worsening of PTSD symptoms. Ecological momentary assessment …
Investigations Into The Negative Impact Of Temperature Stress On Fertility In Wild Strains Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Nicholas B. Sepulveda
Investigations Into The Negative Impact Of Temperature Stress On Fertility In Wild Strains Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Nicholas B. Sepulveda
Dissertations (1934 -)
Sexual reproduction and its coincident genetic recombination are powerful adaptive strategies. However, sexual reproduction has disadvantages. One ancient and conserved disadvantage is temperature sensitivity. In organisms diverse as plants, insects, nematode worms, and humans, as temperatures increase, fertility decreases. The goal of this dissertation is to examine the negative impact of elevated temperature stress on fertility in sexually reproducing organisms using wild strains of Caenorhabditis elegans. C. elegans presents a unique opportunity to study these effects broadly in two contexts, as worms may be either self-fertile hermaphrodites that produce both egg and sperm or males which produce only sperm. In …

Objective: We aim to reduce overfitting and model overconfidence by distilling the knowledge of an ensemble of deep learning models into a single model for the classification of cancer pathology reports. Materials and Methods: We consider the text classification problem that involves 5 individual tasks. The baseline model consists of a multitask convolutional neural network (MtCNN), and the implemented ensemble (teacher) consists of 1000 MtCNNs. We performed knowledge transfer by training a single model (student) with soft labels derived through the aggregation of ensemble predictions. We evaluate performance based on accuracy and abstention rates by using softmax thresholding. Results: The …
Translation Al Mercato Del Pesce: The Importance Of Human Input For Machine Translation, Emma Y. Schechter , '23
Translation Al Mercato Del Pesce: The Importance Of Human Input For Machine Translation, Emma Y. Schechter , '23
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
This thesis investigates translation of Italian idioms and metaphors into English, and the difficulties encountered by Machine Translation in this process. I use a framework of foreign concepts to explain many of the difficulties, as well as interviews with native Italian and English speakers to provide further context for the cultural knowledge encoded in figurative language. I conclude that in Machine Translation a consistent human input interface as well as a continuous training in language corpora is crucial to improve the accuracy of translated metaphors and idioms, using Italian to English translation as a case study.

Remembering Who Foster Care Is For: Public Accommodation And Other Misconceptions And Missed Opportunities In Fulton V. City Of Philadelphia, Chris Gottlieb
Cardozo Law Review
The Supreme Court’s opinion in Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, which held that a Catholic foster care agency could refuse to accept gay foster parents, and virtually all commentary on the case, are flawed by a profound misunderstanding of key aspects of the foster care system. The case’s role in the broader culture war between religious rights advocates and those supporting LGBTQ equality has led advocates on both sides to use Fulton for their own purposes at the expense of the families the foster care system is intended to serve.
This Article explains that the most important constitutional interests at …
The Challenge Of Holding Big Business Accountable, Roy Shapira
The Challenge Of Holding Big Business Accountable, Roy Shapira
Cardozo Law Review
In July 2021, a sweeping Executive Order committed the entire U.S. federal government to reining in big business. Dozens of proposed bills at the state level similarly target big business for stricter regulatory treatment. But unlike in past decades, today’s calls to break up and intensely regulate big business do not hinge on harms to consumers qua consumers. Instead, today’s anti-bigness sentiment rests to a large extent on the claim that big is bad because it is ungovernable. Giant corporations with market power treat legal requirements as mere recommendations, and routinely engage in behavior that harms our civil liberties and …

Beyond Bristol-Myers : Personal Jurisdiction Over Class Actions, Adam N. Steinman

The Supreme Court's 2017 decision in Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. v. Superior Court threatens a sea change in the relationship between personal jurisdiction and aggregate litigation. The most crucial concern has been what the decision means for class actions. Must a court subject the claims of every unnamed class member to separate jurisdictional scrutiny? If so, it could be impossible for a plaintiff who sues in her home state to represent class members outside that state; instead, the Constitution would permit multi-state or nationwide class actions only in states where the defendant is subject to general jurisdiction. For claims against a …
Whose Debt Is It Anyway?, Luís C. Calderón Gómez
Whose Debt Is It Anyway?, Luís C. Calderón Gómez
Articles
Every year, companies issue hundreds of billions of dollars of debt with a feature carrying unclear tax consequences. So do individuals, who frequently tie their most significant financial asset to this type of instrument. Yet this instrument is not an exotic or innovative financial derivative, but is simple vanilla debt with two or more borrowers, or “co-obligated debt”. Co-obligated debt poses a conceptual problem for the law because it does not fit neatly into the simple and dyadic legal framework underlying the law’s conception of debt, where one creditor lends money to one borrower in exchange for a direct promise …
Carrie Menkel-Meadow: Dispute Resolution In A Feminist Voice, Andrea K. Schneider
Carrie Menkel-Meadow: Dispute Resolution In A Feminist Voice, Andrea K. Schneider
Articles
The presence of women in the law has changed the law’s substance, practice, and process. Carrie Menkel-Meadow, whose scholarship centers on this theme, is one such revolutionary woman.
Professor Menkel-Meadow, who I am proud to call my colleague, co-author, and friend (hereinafter referred to as Carrie), began her career in 1977 with a series of simple questions that sparked a breathtaking body of work. Carrie probed the depth of male domination in the realm of law and wondered what changes female representation might engender. In particular, she focused her inquiry on the value orientation each respective gender might bring to …
Relationship Of Spirituality, Self-Awareness, And Effective Leadership Among Lay Catholic High School Leaders In Nigeria, Emmanuel I. Ugwejeh
Relationship Of Spirituality, Self-Awareness, And Effective Leadership Among Lay Catholic High School Leaders In Nigeria, Emmanuel I. Ugwejeh
Dissertations (1934 -)
First, this research measured the spirituality, self-awareness, and leadership effectiveness of 70 lay Catholic high school leaders in Nigeria to gain insights into these leaders' self-awareness, spirituality, and effectiveness. Second, using multiple regression analysis, it also tried to determine if an association exists between lay-Catholic high school leaders’ self-rated spirituality, self-rated self-awareness, supervisor-rated self-awareness, and supervisor-rated effectiveness of the same Catholic high school leaders. Third, it also tried to determine if self-rated self-awareness, self-rated spirituality, and supervisors’ rated self-awareness would together predict leadership effectiveness among the same lay Catholic high school leaders. The study suggests mixed results. Whereas the supervisor-rated …
Bit-Flip Aware Data Structures For Phase Change Memory, Arockia David Roy Kulandai
Bit-Flip Aware Data Structures For Phase Change Memory, Arockia David Roy Kulandai
Dissertations (1934 -)
Big, non-volatile, byte-addressable, low-cost, and fast non-volatile memories like Phase Change Memory are appearing in the marketplace. They have the capability to unify both memory and storage and allow us to rethink the present memory hierarchy. An important draw-back to Phase Change Memory is limited write-endurance. In addition, Phase Change Memory shares with other Non-Volatile Random Access Memories an asym- metry in the energy costs of writes and reads. Best use of Non-Volatile Random Access Memories limits the number of times a Non-Volatile Random Access Memory cell changes contents, called a bit-flip. While the future of main memory is still …

Designing A Patient-Centered Clinical Workflow To Assess Cyberbully Experiences Of Youths In The U.S. Healthcare System, Fayika Farhat Nova
Dissertations (1934 -)
Cyberbullying or online harassment is often defined as when someone repeatedly and intentionally harasses, mistreats, or makes fun of others aiming to scare, anger or shame them using electronic devices [296]. Youths experiencing cyberbullying report higher levels of anxiety and depression, mental distress, suicide thoughts, and substance abuse than their non-bullied peers [360, 605, 261, 354]. Even though bullying is associated with significant health problems, to date, very little youth anti-bullying efforts are initiated and directed in clinical settings. There is presently no standardized procedure or workflow across health systems for systematically assessing cyberbullying or other equally dangerous online activities …
Continuous Myoelectric Prediction Of Future Ankle Kinematics And Kinetics For The Control Of Active Powered Prostheses, Erika Virginia Zabre González
Continuous Myoelectric Prediction Of Future Ankle Kinematics And Kinetics For The Control Of Active Powered Prostheses, Erika Virginia Zabre González
Dissertations (1934 -)
The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a continuous predictive model of gait that incorporates user intent, vis-à-vis surface electromyography (EMG) signals of the lower limb, to continuously predict future ankle kinematics and kinetics across multiple terrains and their transitions for the control of an active ankle-foot prosthesis. Continuously predicting variations in gait, particularly during transitions and noncyclic activities, is limited in lower limb prostheses. Despite performance improvements in active lower limb prostheses, there remains a need for robust and accurate control that incorporates direct user intent (e.g., myoelectric control) to limit physical and cognitive demands and provide more …
Latinas’ Use Of Spirituality As A Coping Mechanism, Ashley Lauren Faytol
Latinas’ Use Of Spirituality As A Coping Mechanism, Ashley Lauren Faytol
Dissertations (1934 -)
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a widespread public health concern with consequences that negatively impact many areas of survivors’ functioning (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2017, 2019; Ellsberg et al., 2008; Gorde et al., 2004; Kelly, 2010a). The negative impacts of IPV are more severe for Latinas than their White counterparts (e.g., Bonomi et al., 2009; Kelly, 2010b; Stockman et al., 2015), causing IPV to be considered a health disparity within the Latina community (Caetano et al., 2005). While spirituality has been shown to be an effective coping mechanism for many stressors in Latinas’ lives, it has not …

Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is a popular leafy vegetable crop and commercial production is centered in California and Arizona in the US. The oomycete Peronospora effusa causes the most important disease in spinach, downy mildew. A total of nineteen races of P. effusa are known, with more than 15 documented in the last three decades, and the regular emergence of new races is continually overcoming the genetic resistance to the pathogen. This study aimed to finely map the downy mildew resistance locus RPF3 in spinach, identify single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers associated with the resistance, refine the candidate genes …

Commonality In Credit Spread Changes: Dealer Inventory And Intermediary Distress, Zhiguo He, Paymon Khorrami, Zhaogang Song
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Two intermediary-based factors—a corporate bond dealer inventory measure and a broad intermediary distress measure—explain more than 40% of the puzzling common variation in credit spread changes beyond canonical structural factors. A simple intermediary-based model with partial market segmentation accounts for intermediary factors’ explanatory power and delivers three further implications with empirical support. First, whereas bond sorts on risk-related variables produce monotonic loading patterns on intermediary factors, non-risk-related sorts produce no pattern. Second, dealer inventory comoves with corporate-credit assets only, whereas intermediary distress comoves with both corporate-credit and non-corporate-credit assets. Third, dealers’ inventory responds to (instrumented) bond sales by institutional investors.

In this paper, we characterize the position of Singapore in global value chains and identify Singapore’s key upstream and downstream trade partners. We trace how the position of Singapore in global value chains has changed in the past two decades: whether it has moved upstream or downstream, how involved it is in global value chains, how its trend compares with the other major Asian exporters (China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong), and which key sectors of Singapore play a major role in these global trade networks.

For centuries, Christians have cultivated faith in themselves and others by engaging in prayer, evangelism, discipleship, and education, with Christian tertiary institutions playing a vital role in this nurturing of faith. However, previous studies have shown that Christian educators have also been complicit in depleting faith in others. This erosion of faith has been well documented in American "Christian" universities like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, primarily due to modernity and secularization. For faith to thrive, it has to be backed with intention, and this is especially of paramount importance in American higher education today. As the oldest Seventh-day Adventist University, …

This paper interrogates the concept of transdisciplinarity, both theoretically and practically, from a perspective of early career researchers (ECRs) in transformative ocean governance research. Aiming to advance research methodologies for future complex sustainability challenges, the paper seeks to illuminate some common uncertainties and challenges surrounding transdisciplinarity from a marine science perspective. Following a literature review on transdisciplinary research, workshops, and a series of surveys, we determine that transdisciplinarity appears to be a concept in search of definition, and that there is a need to explore transdisciplinarity specifically from an ocean research perspective. The paper discusses a number of challenges experienced …

Background and Objectives: Research into people with dementia's experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic has tended to focus on vulnerabilities and negative outcomes, with the risk of reproducing a discourse in which people with dementia are positioned as passive. Informed by concepts positioning people with dementia as ‘active social agents’, we aimed to identify the pandemic-related challenges faced by people recently diagnosed with dementia and examine the ways in which they actively coped with, and adapted to, these challenges. Research Design and Methods: In-depth interviews with 21 people recently diagnosed with dementia, recruited through an existing national cohort. Data was analysed …
