Post Covid-19 Pulmonary Mass: Case Report And Review Of Literatures, Waleed M. Hussen
Post Covid-19 Pulmonary Mass: Case Report And Review Of Literatures, Waleed M. Hussen
Saudi Medical Journal
To present an unusual and a rare pulmonary affection by coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19), in which only one lung is affected. Coronavirus disease-19 attacks the lungs and interferes seriously with their functions. The attack is usually bilaterally, while a uni lateral pulmonary affection is unusual. The presentation, both clinical and radiological findings, bronchoscopy appearance, the strange operative findings of the resected mass, the uneventful post-operative course, in addition to the histopathological report, will be presented. In conclusion, unilateral lung affection is unusual and post-viral pneumonia COVID-19 should be considered as a possible aftermath, which may not be uncommon in Iraq.
Hierarchical Hourglass Convolutional Network For Efficient Video Classification, Yi Tan, Yanbin Hao, Hao Zhang, Shuo Wang
Hierarchical Hourglass Convolutional Network For Efficient Video Classification, Yi Tan, Yanbin Hao, Hao Zhang, Shuo Wang
PhD Student’s Publications Collection
Videos naturally contain dynamic variation over the temporal axis, which will result in the same visual clues (e.g., semantics, objects) changing their scale, position, and perspective patterns between adjacent frames. A primary trend in video CNN is adopting spatial-2D convolution for spatial semantics and temporal-1D convolution for temporal dynamics. Though the direction achieves a favorable balance between efficiency and efficacy, it suffers from misalignment of visual clues with large displacements. Particularly, rigid temporal convolution would fail to capture correct motions when a specific target moves out of the reception field of temporal convolution between adjacent frames. To tackle large visual displacements …
Academic Achievement And Relations To Externalizing Behavior: Much Ado About Nothing?, Tara Kulkarni, Amanda L. Sullivan
Academic Achievement And Relations To Externalizing Behavior: Much Ado About Nothing?, Tara Kulkarni, Amanda L. Sullivan
Education and Leadership Faculty Publications and Presentations
Some of the worst long-term outcomes of children are associated with the presence of externalizing behavior and low academic achievement. However, the nature of the causal and predictive relationship between these two domains remains contested due to inconsistent findings in previous literature. Leveraging a nationally representative sample (N = 7330) from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS)–Kindergarten Cohort of 2011, we used latent class growth analysis and machine learning cross validation techniques to analyze the association of early math and reading achievement with the development of externalizing behavior trajectories in elementary school. Several theoretically and empirically important covariates were utilized …
Measuring The Impact Of Thermal Stress On Coral Resilience In Hawai'i Using Large-Area Imagery, Caroline Rodriguez
Measuring The Impact Of Thermal Stress On Coral Resilience In Hawai'i Using Large-Area Imagery, Caroline Rodriguez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Coral reefs worldwide are declining due to several anthropogenic stressors, but rising ocean temperature is the most serious threat to coral reef persistence. Developing models that document changes in coral communities following thermal stress events and forecast trends in reef recovery is crucial in identifying resilient reefs. Traditional approaches to generating the coral vital rates necessary for demographic modeling are time consuming and field intensive; however, by leveraging Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry, we can accurately track populations over time at a large spatial scale. In this study, I assessed the population dynamics of the dominant coral species across the Hawaiian archipelago and …
The Distribution Of Microplastics In Marshlands Surrounded By Agriculture Fields- Elkhorn Slough, Ca, Victoria Dickey
The Distribution Of Microplastics In Marshlands Surrounded By Agriculture Fields- Elkhorn Slough, Ca, Victoria Dickey
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The widespread use and subsequent reuse of plastics in the agriculture industry increases the risk of improper disposal, posing a threat to important wetland habitats. When plastics degrade, they break up into smaller pieces that pose serious threats to organisms that ingest them and to habitats they settle in. This study quantifies the estimated concentration, types, and lengths of microplastics (< 5mm plastic particles) in the marsh environments of Elkhorn Slough, California’s second largest estuary. Replicate samples of marsh soil samples were extracted from seven Elkhorn Slough marshes at varying distances from the head and the mouth of the estuary and potential sources of agricultural plastic. Using a safe and cost-effective density separation technique, microplastics were separated from the soil, identified, and counted on micro-filters using a dissecting microscope, then further analyzed with a Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with an Energy-Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM/EDS) to analyze surface microstructures and the elemental compositions of the particles. Two main microplastic morphotypes, fragments and fibers were observed. The average concentration of microplastics estimated by this study is ~1600 particles per kg of wet soil. Fragments are shorter but more abundant (making up 85% of microplastics found) than fibers and have an average length of ~85 μm and ~500 μm respectively. All microplastics found in collected samples exhibit signs of weathering, including pitting and fractures on the surface. I studied the particle size distributions of microplastics and fine-grained estuarian soil to highlight the similarities in the physical and hydrological influences controlling their distributions. This study helps to make conclusions about potential sources of microplastics to Elkhorn Slough and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary with an emphasis on California’s agriculture industry and watershed dynamics. The microplastic particle size distributions reflect hydrological influences on the suspension and deposition of microplastics in the Elkhorn Slough watershed. This finding assisted in identifying plastic sources as non-local agriculture plastics immigrating from outside of this watershed due to the removal of a natural barrier and the unique hydrological dynamics of Elkhorn Slough.
Clarifying The “People Like Me”: Racial Efficacy And Political Behavior, Davin L. Phoenix, Nathan Chan
Clarifying The “People Like Me”: Racial Efficacy And Political Behavior, Davin L. Phoenix, Nathan Chan
Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works
Political efficacy, or a sense of confidence that “people like me” can understand politics and receive responsiveness from government, is central to the study of political behavior. However, the reference group that respondents view as “people like me” is not always immediately clear. This limits our ability to infer how efficacy informs political participation. We propose a specific concept and operationalization of racial group efficacy, and we distinguish this concept from racial identity, group consciousness, and conventional efficacy measures. Analyses of data from the 2016 Collaborative Multiracial Post-Election Survey reveal that for white, Black, Asian, and Latina/o Americans, racial efficacy …
Guilt And Compensation: The Interplay Between Maternal Emotions And Parent–Child Relationships In Migrant Families, Meng Li
Communication Studies Faculty Works
Objective: The study aimed to explore how mother–child interactions shape Chinese rural–urban migrant women's maternal guilt, and vice versa. Background: Migrant mothers are documented to experience intense feelings of guilt due to long-term separation from their children. Research on maternal guilt frequently conceptualizes guilt as a negative self-judgement of mothers without considering the bidirectional interplay between mother–child interactions and mothers' guilt feelings. Method: Data were drawn from semistructured interviews with 24 Chinese rural–urban migrant mothers who voiced profound guilt for leaving their children behind. The research was carried out following a grounded theory approach. Results: Results demonstrate left-behind children's power …
Religious Liberty Interest Convergence, Asma T. Uddin
Religious Liberty Interest Convergence, Asma T. Uddin
William & Mary Law Review
Americans are deeply polarized on a plethora of issues. One of the most prominent areas of polarization is religious liberty, which in recent years has increasingly pitted conservative, white Christians against a range of marginalized minorities, particularly Muslims. The divide threatens Muslims’ rights and the vitality of religious liberty more broadly. This Article assesses the extent to which self-interest— especially the self-interest of the conservative Justices of the Supreme Court—can help depolarize religious liberty.
Professor Derrick Bell’s theory of “interest convergence” helps connect different self-interests that, in turn, enable issue-specific coalitions strong enough to effect serious cultural and legal change. …
Equal Dignity, Colorblindness, And The Future Of Affirmative Action Beyond Grutter V. Bollinger, Thomas P. Crocker
Equal Dignity, Colorblindness, And The Future Of Affirmative Action Beyond Grutter V. Bollinger, Thomas P. Crocker
William & Mary Law Review
In Grutter v. Bollinger the Supreme Court held that diversity was a compelling interest for equal protection purposes that justifies limited consideration of race through affirmative action programs. But there was a catch. The Court predicted that diversity would cease to be a compelling interest within twenty-five years. This Article examines the surprising doctrinal and conceptual implications that would follow if, having both the motive and means, the Court were to overturn Grutter before its predicted 2028 sunset. Exploring internal tensions within existing doctrine, this Article argues that even if the Court were to overturn Grutter, a form of …

Historical Examples And Evaluations Of Visions And Dreams, Wilfred T. Adderley Sr.
Historical Examples And Evaluations Of Visions And Dreams, Wilfred T. Adderley Sr.
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
This article asks whether there has been an ecclesiastical shift away from spiritual gifts—especially believing and accepting that God still sends visions and dreams during this present period in history? Is the Holy Spirit continuing to speak to humans through visions and dreams? These questions will be answered, and the seven-element biblical model will be used to evaluate visions and dreams. I will review documents from the Ante Nicene Fathers, will look at the works of Martin Luther and John Wesley, and Adventist pioneers William Miller and Ellen White concerning dreams and visions. Documented dream experiences from Muslim cultures and …

Trancseding What Is Literally Prescribed About Zakāh In Islam: A Fiqh-Economic Study, Mahmoud Irshaid
Trancseding What Is Literally Prescribed About Zakāh In Islam: A Fiqh-Economic Study, Mahmoud Irshaid
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
This study aims to explore the possibility of paying the monetary value instead of the in-kind value (zakāh of agricultural and livestock products) and paying it in the form of commercial offers. To this end, the study was guided by maqāṣid al-sharīʿa with a focus on who pays and benefits from zakāh dues. The researcher used inductive and deductive methods to justify the alternative of paying zakāh for agricultural products and livestock or the cash payment alternative, in addition to the payment of zakāh commercial offers instead of cash money. The researcher purposely used the analytical method to correlate the …
A Proposal To Distinguish SharīʿAh Commercial-Debt-Financing From Fictitious Exchanges Used As Stratagem To Overcome The Prohibition Of Ribā, Mohammed I. Al-Suhaibani
A Proposal To Distinguish SharīʿAh Commercial-Debt-Financing From Fictitious Exchanges Used As Stratagem To Overcome The Prohibition Of Ribā, Mohammed I. Al-Suhaibani
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
This paper provides some observations on the economic maxim proposed by Zarqa to distinguish financial products based on Sharīʿahhcompliant commercial debts from usury-based financing and products, along a proposal to systemize the rule in a way that excludes prohibited financial products using deceitful contracts. The paper highlights the importance of this rule in its revised form, briefly reviews Sharīʿahh-compliant commercial debt-based financial products and highlights the obvious differences between the characteristics of these and other contracts, as well as its potential role in developing the Zarqa Rule's revision. The paper then discusses the additional controls to supplement the Zarqa rule …
Evaluative Review Of Muhammad Zarqa's Research, Burhan Bin Al-Habib Al-Nafati
Evaluative Review Of Muhammad Zarqa's Research, Burhan Bin Al-Habib Al-Nafati
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
This article is an evaluative review of Muhammad Anas Zarqa's conclusions regarding framed maxims derived from the exegesis of the Qur’ānic verse "Allah has permitted trade and forbidden ribā (usury)" [AlBaqarah: 275] which he considers important to offer an economic interpretation to the verse. Dr. Zarqa believes that the reason why profit is permitted in exchanges that create debt is to determine the significant difference between the two transactions mentioned in the previous verse. This essay presents a refutation of the proposed maxim based on the imbalance of the continuity effect condition in some particulars, and the weakness of the …

Profit: Concept And Stipulations In Islamic Commercial Debt Financing, Fayyad Abdelmoneim Hassanein
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
The detailed fiqh rulings on financial transaction contracts, including forward sale contracts, provide the rules, controls and characteristics of permissible commercial debt financing and clearly defines the fundamental differences between it and ribā-based debt financing. fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) contains many rulings regarding debt, whether from sales in which the debt is deferred or from a loan or otherwise, the types, categories and degrees of such debts, as well as their strengths, weaknesses, and the causes for the legitimacy or invalidity of such transactions, the types of tricks in such transactions and the controls to prevent them, and how to avoid …
Economic And Shariah Considerations In Debt Financing, Abdulazeem Abozaid
Economic And Shariah Considerations In Debt Financing, Abdulazeem Abozaid
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
This paper includes suggestions for minor amendments to the Zarqa’s paper, and for legal and economic analyzes of the reality of debt financing in financial institutions; regardless of their identity (i.e., Islamic, or conventional). After presenting these detailed comments on Zarqa’s research, the paper begins by answering questions raised by the journal's editorial board. Through the answers, the paper compares normal deferred payment sales, i.e., those that take place outside the spectrum of financial institutions, with usury-based financing. It then compares debt financing (via financial intermediation) in Islamic financial institutions and usury-based financing. The paper shows that direct deferred payment …
The Fiqh Maxim "Kharāj Bil-Damān" As A Key Characteristic Distinguishing Islamic Debt Financing From Ribā Financing, Hideur Nasser
The Fiqh Maxim "Kharāj Bil-Damān" As A Key Characteristic Distinguishing Islamic Debt Financing From Ribā Financing, Hideur Nasser
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
This paper is a critical review of the research presented by Muhammad Anas Zarqa on the rule proposed by Sami Al-Suwailem to distinguish between lawful Shariah-based commercial loans and usurious loans. This subject is of utmost importance, given the ongoing debate on whether there is a true difference between the financing models proposed by Islamic banks and the usury-based loaning models used by conventional banks. Furthermore, many Muslim economists and jurists tend to question the Shariah-conformity of debt-based financing products, such as murābaha, ijārah, salam, and istisna, with the provisions of Sharia because of what they perceive to be a …

Evaluating The Impact Of Submarine Groundwater Discharge On Nutrients And Trace Elements In Coastal Systems: The Examples Of The Tuckean Swamp (Australia) And The Mississippi Sound (Usa), Amy Moody
Dissertations
Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is the advective flow of both fresh terrestrial groundwater and recirculating seawater through aquifer sediments, which is released into the coastal ocean. In this dissertation, I evaluated the impact of SGD on the distributions and input of trace metals and nutrients. In the Tuckean Swamp, an estuary in Australia dominated by coastal acid sulfate soils, I determined the impact of groundwater on Ba and U during the flood season, when the local aquifer is flushed out after a rapid increase in water table elevation. For Ba and U, groundwater contributed up to 18 and 66 % …

Defending Henrietta Lacks: Justification Of Ownership Rights In Separated Human Body Parts, Arseny Shevelev, Georgy Shevelev
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Since the time of Moore v. Regents of the University of California, it has become a well-established and widespread view that a person, when their separated body parts are misappropriated, is forced to limit themselves to fiduciary and other non-proprietary claims against those who violate the bodily inviolability of their separated parts. Now, with the filing of a lawsuit in defense of the rights in body parts of the victim of racial discrimination, Henrietta Lacks, the judicial system has an opportunity to justify itself by adopting a different perception of rights in human body parts. This Article focuses on the …
