The ability to overcome stressful environments is critical for pathogen survival in the host. One challenge for bacteria is the exposure to reactive chlorine species (RCS), which are generated by innate immune cells as a critical part of the oxidative burst. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is the most potent antimicrobial RCS and is associated with extensive macromolecular damage in the phagocytized pathogen. However, bacteria have evolved defense strategies to alleviate the effects of HOCl-mediated damage. Among these are RCS-sensing transcriptional regulators that control the expression of HOCl-protective genes under non-stress and HOCl stress. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), the major causative agent …

Controlling Sars Related Illnesses In The Indoor Environment Using Hvac Ventilation Techniques, Natalie Mansson Oct 2022

Controlling Sars Related Illnesses In The Indoor Environment Using Hvac Ventilation Techniques, Natalie Mansson

Construction Management Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought on a need for better ventilation systems due to the deadly spreading of the SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 illness through the air. As the positivity rate increases sharply, this study is pertinent in the fight against the virus. The implementation of MERV filters and ventilation rates while also understanding respiratory droplets and how they move through the air is an important part of understanding airborne transmission. Much research has been done on MERV filtration and respiratory droplets and their traveling methods in the air, and this research aims to find the commonalities between prior research, and …

Evaluation Of A Health Navigator Pilot Program For Youth In Foster Care, Stephanie Skourtes, Kyla Brophy, Eva Moore Oct 2022

Evaluation Of A Health Navigator Pilot Program For Youth In Foster Care, Stephanie Skourtes, Kyla Brophy, Eva Moore

Journal of Youth Development

The Health Navigator Program (HNP) was a pilot health mentor intervention program for youth in British Columbia, Canada, with connections to the provincial child welfare system. In this article, youth participants are referred to as “independent youth” as they are independent of traditional familial care. Children and youth in the foster care system face increased prevalence and risk of physical and mental health challenges with lasting implications throughout adulthood. The cumulative effect of childhood trauma, lack of connections to supportive adults, and structural obstacles such as poverty, racism, and sexism all contribute to creating significant barriers for independent youth navigating …

Music-Based Mentoring And Academic Improvement In High-Poverty Elementary Schools, Hannah Holbrook, Margaret Martin, Deborah Glik, James Hudziak Oct 2022

Music-Based Mentoring And Academic Improvement In High-Poverty Elementary Schools, Hannah Holbrook, Margaret Martin, Deborah Glik, James Hudziak

Journal of Youth Development

Recent research links disparities in children’s language-related brain function to poverty and its correlates. Such disparities are hypothesized to underlie achievement gaps between students from low-income families and more advantaged peers. Interventions that improve language-related brain function in low-income students exist, but evaluations of their implementation within high-poverty elementary schools do not. This comparison-group study evaluates whether implementation within high-poverty elementary schools of Harmony Project music-based mentoring, previously shown in randomized controlled research to improve language-related brain function and literacy in low-income students, might be associated with academic improvement for participants compared with non-participating peers. Standardized academic achievement scores were …

Enriching Intentional Youth Program Experiences Through Preflection, Action, And Reflection, Gary Ellis, Darlene Locke, Kaylee Jorgensen, Jingxian Jiang

Journal of Youth Development

We examined effects of preflection, action, and reflection sessions on youth experiences during a 4-H travel camp. The travel camp was one component of GLOBE, a 2-year Texas 4-H program with intentional goals of advancing understanding of agriculture, poverty, and world cultures. In morning preflection sessions, the 28 youth participants were instructed to take photographs during their day according to themes aligned with 1 of 2 of the program’s goals: building global citizenship and understanding poverty. Each day ended with a reflection session. Youth viewed a slideshow of their themed photographs. After the slideshows, youth completed questionnaires measuring elements of …

Experience Journey Map: A New Experience Design Tool For Structuring Youth Activities, Gary Ellis, Jingxian Jiang, Darlene Locke Oct 2022

Experience Journey Map: A New Experience Design Tool For Structuring Youth Activities, Gary Ellis, Jingxian Jiang, Darlene Locke

Journal of Youth Development

We introduce a new experience design tool, an experience journey map, to assist youth professionals in planning engagement, immersion, and absorption activities. Experience journey maps are based on customer journey maps, which are widely used in business service design. This new approach highlights strategies for engendering deep structured experiences during the activity. An experience journey map is a matrix of columns and rows. Columns represent the sequence of activity stages. Rows are experience-structuring strategies derived from the theory of structured experience. These strategies include service performance strategies, deep structured experience strategies, and engagement, immersion, and absorption strategies. We present a …

Process Evaluations Of Positive Youth Development Programmes For Disadvantaged Young People: A Systematic Review, Grace Tidmarsh, Janice Thompson, Mary Quinton, Jennifer Cumming

Journal of Youth Development

This systematic review identified 10 process evaluation studies of positive youth development (PYD) programmes for disadvantaged young people, and aimed to assess the quality of reporting, methods used, and barriers and enablers to delivering programmes as intended. Four databases were searched: Web of Science, Psych INFO, Scopus, and Embase. Results indicated the methods used and quality of the process evaluations were highly varied. Numerous barriers (sessions feeling too much like school, lack of behaviour management skills, lack of funding, and logistical challenges) and enablers (collaboration with the local community, meeting young people’s needs, and communication) to delivering programmes as intended …

A Simulation Training To Prepare Camp Counselors For Working With Children At Camp Hope America, Angela Pharris, Julie Miller-Cribbs, Jedediah Bragg, Bonni Goodwin

Journal of Youth Development

Camp has proven to be an effective positive youth development strategy for children and youth who experience trauma and adversity. However, training camp counselors who are prepared to meet the needs of trauma-exposed youth in these settings are less understood. This pilot evaluation study provides the results of a social simulation-based training for counselors who will work with children who have witnessed family violence through Camp HOPE America. Survey data (N = 76) and content analysis from video recorded training sessions in simulation that used standardized actors and scenarios from the 1st year (n = 37) were conducted. Repeated measures …

An Enhanced Mentoring Model’S Impact On Youth In Boys And Girls Clubs, Lisa Mcgarrie, Eric Napierala, Carrie Oliver, Emily Heberlein, Brittany Taylor, Angie Snyder

Journal of Youth Development

Although federal funding has been provided to add mentoring to youth development programs for decades, we still lack knowledge about the impacts of mentoring on youth outcomes. This research seeks to fill a gap by documenting youth outcomes from an enhanced mentoring approach for urban Boys and Girls Clubs (BGC) in the Southeastern United States delivered by paid staff who serve as mentors through group activities and 1:1 interactions with youth. We perform logistic regressions of secondary data from a cohort of BGCs to understand the relationships between enhanced mentoring and youth outcomes related to program retention, behaviors, and academics. …

Importance Of The Access, Equity, And Opportunity Competencies Among 4-H Professionals, Matt Benge, Jeff Wayne Howard

Journal of Youth Development

The 4-H Professional Research, Knowledge and Competencies (PRKC) is a professional development framework that can be used to identify competency gaps and training needs of 4-H professionals. The PRKC consists of 6 competency domains, 1 being access, equity, and opportunity (AEO). A tailored design method was used to gather data and sort the respondents between rural and urban community type. 4-H Extension agents serving urban communities perceived 12 out of the 14 AEO domain components as more important than agents serving rural communities did. The 2 AEO domain components that were not significantly different in perceived importance were values, norms, …

Implementation Of Routine Screening To Detect Early Cases Of Depression And Anxiety In Hispanic Adolescents In The Primary Care Setting, Latoya Hayward

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Depression and anxiety are among the leading causes of illness and disability in adolescents and are two of the most prevalent mental health conditions in Latino youth. If left unrecognized and untreated, these conditions can lead to decreased quality of life and increased rates of suicide. Researchers recommend early mental health screening to occur in the primary care setting. Through routine screening using evidence-based screening tools (PHQ-9 and GAD-7), the primary goal of this quality improvement project was to increase early detection of depression and anxiety in primary care and initiate early treatment. Project methods included implementation of new workflow, …
