How Empathy Styles Mediate The Relationship Between Responsive Parenting And Adolescent Friendship Quality?, Aaliya Hana Mahirah, Darmawan Muttaqin

Psychological Research on Urban Society

Responsive parenting contributes to the friendship quality formed in adolescents. Previous studies failed to fully explain the relationship process between responsive parenting and friendship quality. Empathy is one of the interpersonal skills formed through responsive parenting. Therefore, this study aims to examine the role of empathy in responsive parenting relations with friendship quality. A total of 450 respondents, including the early, middle, and late adolescents aged 12-15, 15-18, and 18-20 years, were selected as participants. Responsive parenting, empathy style, and friendship quality was measured using the Parental Responsiveness Scale, Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and the McGill Friendship Questionnaires-Friend's Functions. The research …

Developing effective programs that aim to generate student interest in the pursuit of a career in healthcare is vital to avoid shortages among the workforce. As the American population ages, the country will continue to experience a higher demand for healthcare-trained individuals and services. Exposing racially diverse students to career options and the educational requirements early can serve as a pipeline for increasing interest in obtaining careers in healthcare professions overall. Program formatting resembles “summer camps” as it provides students with educational opportunities outside of the typical school curriculum. These summer camp designed “programs” have been an effective method of …

Girl Center Roadmap To 2030, Girl Center

Adolescents and Young People

Today’s rising generation of 1.3 billion adolescents are tomorrow’s future. Yet, adolescent girls fare worse than boys in many ways, including education and experiences with violence. Furthermore, the implications of key experiences for girls in adolescence—school dropout, early marriage, motherhood, sexual and gender-based violence—are irreversible. The GIRL Center Roadmap to 2030 outlines the strategy of the Population Council’s GIRL Center—generating and communicating evidence, convening experts, and nurturing talent. Undertaking a girl-centered, evidence-driven, intersectional, and innovative approach that is grounded in low- and middle-income countries, the GIRL Center focuses on: intergenerational poverty and gender inequity; adolescents and the digital space; adolescents …

A Planetary Imagination: Responses To Chakrabarty’S Socio-Natural Historiography, Editorial Introduction, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer

Faculty Scholarship

Dipesh Chakrabarty’s 2009 essay in Critical Inquiry, “The Climate of History: Four Theses” sent tremors through the environmentally aware humanities in the 2010s. Last year, he published the book that brought that essay forward into the present, The Climate of History in a Planetary Age. It’s no overstatement to think of this book as having clanged the bell for a new normal in the humanities and social sciences when it comes to telling the story of ourselves, that is, when it comes to human history. Responsible history should today be geological even when recounting the human record. Chakrabarty raised a …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

The use of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies is constrained because single antigen targets often do not provide sufficient selectivity to distinguish diseased from healthy tissues. We present HexElect, an approach to enhance the functional selectivity of therapeutic antibodies by making their activity dependent on clustering after binding to two different antigens expressed on the same target cell. lmmunoglobulin G (lgG)-mediated clustering of membrane receptors naturally occurs on cell surfaces to trigger complement- or cell-mediated effector functions or to initiate intracellular signaling. We engineer the Fc domains of two different lgG antibodies to suppress their individual homo-oligomerization while promoting their pairwise hetero-oligomerization …

Stable Coexistence Or Competitive Exclusion? Fern Endophytes Demonstrate Rapid Turnover Favoring A Dominant Fungus, Brett Steven Younginger, Nathan U. Stewart, Mehmet Ali Balkan, Daniel J. Ballhorn

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fungal endophytes are critical members of the plant microbiome, but their community dynamics throughout an entire growing season are underexplored. Additionally, most fungal endophyte research has centred on seed-reproducing hosts, while spore-reproducing plants also host endophytes and may be colonized by unique community members. In order to examine annual fungal endophyte community dynamics in a spore-reproducing host, we explored endophytes in a single population of ferns, Polystichum munitum, in the Pacific Northwest. Through metabarcoding, we characterized the community assembly and temporal turnover of foliar endophytes throughout a growing season. From these results, we selected endophytes with outsized representations in …

The U.N. Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to accelerate actions to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems, and re-establish ecosystem functioning and species diversity. The practice of ecological restoration has made great progress in recent decades, as has recognition of the importance of species diversity to maintaining the long-term stability and functioning of restored ecosystems. Restorations may also focus on specific species to fulfill needed functions, such as supporting dependent wildlife or mitigating extinction risk. Yet even in the most carefully planned and managed restoration, target species may fail to germinate, establish, or persist. To support the successful …

Industrial Energy Development Decouples Ungulate Migration From The Green Wave, Ellen O. Aikens, Teal B. Wyckoff, Hall Sawyer, Matthew J. Kauffman Oct 2022

Industrial Energy Development Decouples Ungulate Migration From The Green Wave, Ellen O. Aikens, Teal B. Wyckoff, Hall Sawyer, Matthew J. Kauffman

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

The ability to freely move across the landscape to track the emergence of nutritious spring green-up (termed ‘green-wave surfing’) is key to the foraging strategy of migratory ungulates. Across the vast landscapes traversed by many migratory herds, habitats are being altered by development with unknown consequences for surfing. Using a unique long-term tracking dataset, we found that when energy development occurs within mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) migration corridors, migrating animals become decoupled from the green wave. During the early phases of a coalbed natural gas development, deer synchronized their movements with peak green-up. But faced with increasing disturbance …

The Role Of Intertemporal Preferences, Active Consideration Of Health Outcomes, And Simple Health Prompts On The Nutritional Quality Of Food Choices, Olivier Tuyizere

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter introduces the thesis by highlighting a brief review of intertemporal preferences, active consideration of health outcomes, and health prompts during food choices. The introduction paves the way for the following two chapters, which are related, but stand-alone papers.

In the second chapter, we explore a novel question: how does actively considering health outcomes (both current and future) during decision-making affect the nutritional quality of food choices? We explore this question with an online experiment on food choices. Our findings show that active consideration of health outcomes leads to choosing products with …

Participants in this study included sustainability leaders in top positions at their organizations in the four highest-ranked countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and the United Kingdom) on the 2022 Climate Change Performance Index. These individuals had positions of chief sustainability officer, head of sustainability, or sustainability …

Online Vs. In-Person Work Environment: Is Productivity Really Maintained In The Hybrid Work Model?, Joaquin Carlos Pinga Oct 2022

Online Vs. In-Person Work Environment: Is Productivity Really Maintained In The Hybrid Work Model?, Joaquin Carlos Pinga

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the term “hybrid work” has been popularized in an attempt to maintain productivity while maintaining social distancing. Hybrid work is a combination of working partly online at home, and partly in the typical office setting. Its existence predates the pandemic; however, it has increased in usage due to the frequent need to quarantine. Hybrid work has also exceeded the boundaries of traditional work, most notably extending into the education field, affecting students’ learning. Come the tail-end of the pandemic, many institutions have adopted the hybrid work model in attempts to suave people’s concerns about returning, as …

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Flash droughts, characterized by their unusually rapid intensification, have garnered increasing attention within the weather, climate, agriculture, and ecological communities in recent years due to their large environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Because flash droughts intensify quickly, they require different early warning capabilities and management approaches than are typically used for slower-developing “conventional” droughts. In this essay, we describe an integrated research-and-applications agenda that emphasizes the need to reconceptualize our understanding of flash drought within existing drought early warning systems by focusing on opportunities to improve monitoring and prediction. We illustrate the need for engagement among physical scientists, social scientists, operational …
