(Si10-123) Comparison Between The Homotopy Perturbation Method And Variational Iteration Method For Fuzzy Differential Equations, P. Chandru, B. Radhakrishnan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, the authors discusses the numerical simulations of higher-order differential equations under a fuzzy environment by using Homotopy Perturbation Method and Variational Iteration Method. The fuzzy parameter and variables are represented by triangular fuzzy convex normalized sets. Comparison of the results are obtained by the homotopy perturbation method with those obtained by the variational iteration method. Examples are provided to demonstrate the theory.

Postdigital Ecopedagogies: Genealogies, Contradictions, And Possible Futures, Petar Jandrić, Derek R. Ford Oct 2022

Postdigital Ecopedagogies: Genealogies, Contradictions, And Possible Futures, Petar Jandrić, Derek R. Ford

Education Studies Faculty publications

This paper charts some genealogies, challenges, and directions for experimenting with the utopic postdigital ecopedagogies demanded by our present (post)pandemic reality. These are messianic—rather than prophetic—utopias that exist not as proclamations or programmes for a distant future but as potentialities immanent in the irreducible excess of the present. While their roots most clearly emanate from the Freirean-inspired ecopedagogy movement, we conceptualize ecopedagogies instead as educational forms that emerge from, negotiate, debate, produce, resist, and/or overcome the shifting and expansive postdigital ecosystems from and to which we write and think. These are expansive ecosystems of humans, postdigital machines, nonhuman animals, minerals, …

Best First-Year Seminar Writing

The whale fishing industry was a prominent economic force during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, fueled not only by the men who worked aboard the whaling ships but more importantly by their wives and the other women back on the East Coast. In Lisa Norling’s book Captain Ahab Had a Wife the women and wives of the maritime men are claimed to be the essential sustaining influence for those within the whale fishing industry. Despite these women never having been on a whaling voyage, their actions back at home and communications with those aboard are what kept the men at …

Sulfur Behavior In The 1257 Ce Samalas Magma (Lombok, Indonesia) As Revealed By Volcanic Apatite, Yasmin Jackson

Earth Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Explosive volcanic eruptions can inject massive amounts of volatiles, including SO2 and H2S, into the stratosphere, inducing drastic tropospheric cooling via sulfate aerosols. Greenland and Antarctic ice cores record evidence of these substantial releases of SO2 and H2S, including the massive release during the ultraplinian 1257 CE Samalas eruption. The 1257 CE Samalas eruption is estimated to have released ~158 Tg of SO2, making it the largest volcanogenic release of SO2 within the last 2000 years. Vidal et al. (2016) propose that most of this sulfur (S) was hosted in a …

Impact Of Childhood Trauma On Skin Conductance Response To Fear, Safety, And Reward, Tristan Alana Gregg Oct 2022

Impact Of Childhood Trauma On Skin Conductance Response To Fear, Safety, And Reward, Tristan Alana Gregg

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Trauma is associated with neurological and physiological differences that can persist years after trauma exposure. Physiologically, trauma has been associated with altered responses to cues in the environment, most commonly threatening stimuli. For instance, in participants who experience trauma during adulthood, such individuals exhibit heightened physiological arousal. Conversely, other studies have found that childhood trauma may be associated with blunted physiological arousal. Most of this research has involved threatening cues, but previous research suggests that trauma is also associated with aberrant physiological arousal responses to positive or rewarding cues. Skin conductance responses (SCRs) are a commonly utilized measure of physiological …

Evaluating Interest In Clinical Trial Participation For The Treatment Of Pediatric Food Allergy, Perry Allen Catlin Oct 2022

Evaluating Interest In Clinical Trial Participation For The Treatment Of Pediatric Food Allergy, Perry Allen Catlin

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Food allergy (FA) is a chronic medical condition that affects one out of every 13 children in the United States. Researchers have recently begun utilizing double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials to test novel biological treatments designed to retrain the immune system to be less reactive to food allergens. Although these treatments remain in the clinical trial stage, evidence suggests that individuals differentially engage with these options based on a variety of factors. Using a socioecological framework, this study sought to evaluate the effect of child, parent, and family-level factors on parental interest in clinical trial participation for the treatment of pediatric …

Activated Charcoal Versus A Chemical Whitening Agent: Effect On Human Enamel, Hien Thai Doan Oct 2022

Activated Charcoal Versus A Chemical Whitening Agent: Effect On Human Enamel, Hien Thai Doan

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Objective: For many years, the conventional method to achieve a white smile has been chemical regimens such as peroxide compounds. Previous studies suggest risks associated with chemical procedures, so many are seeking out alternative options such as utilizing activated charcoal. Since this new method is rapidly trending, there have not been many scientific studies on how utilizing activated charcoal can affect the mechanical/physical properties of tooth structure. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effect of activated charcoal on enamel’s mechanical/physical properties and compare it to a conventional tooth whitening method (carbamide peroxide). Materials and Methods: Extracted …

Impact Of Pipe Material On Microbial Communities In Biofilm Samples From Full-Scale Drinking Water Distribution Systems, San Marie Victoria Thomson Oct 2022

Impact Of Pipe Material On Microbial Communities In Biofilm Samples From Full-Scale Drinking Water Distribution Systems, San Marie Victoria Thomson

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The drinking water distribution system (DWDS) provides a habitat particularly supportive to biofilm-forming bacteria that can attach to pipe walls. These biofilms comprise the majority of bacteria in the DWDS, yet they have been understudied with respect to the pipe material on which they form. Biofilms can accelerate disinfectant decay, promote corrosion of pipes, and harbor opportunistic pathogens (OPs). The choice of pipe material could have a long-lasting effect on the characteristics of the biofilms formed in DWDSs. In this study, the impact of pipe material on biofilms residing in full-scale drinking water pipes was investigated by obtaining biofilm samples …

Transcriptional Profile Of Cohesin Complex Mutations In The Background Of Npm1 And Runx1-Runx1t1 Aml, Jacob Tiegs Oct 2022

Transcriptional Profile Of Cohesin Complex Mutations In The Background Of Npm1 And Runx1-Runx1t1 Aml, Jacob Tiegs

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Acute Myeloid Leukemia is a cancer of the blood, characterized by a heterogenous mixture of disease causing mutations. Mutations of the cohesin complex is a group of such mutations and occur alongside several other driving mutations in the development of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. This thesis specifically focuses on cohesin complex mutations in the context of concurrence with NPM1 mutation and the Core Binding Factor (CBF) mutation RUNX1-RUNX1T1 in three distinct components. The first two components involved Differential Expression Analysis (DEA) to identify significantly differentiated genes in each model, followed by Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) to identify Gene Ontology (GO) …

Development Of An In Vitro Model To Assess Endothelial Dysfunction From Coarctation Of The Aorta, Dylan James Schock Oct 2022

Development Of An In Vitro Model To Assess Endothelial Dysfunction From Coarctation Of The Aorta, Dylan James Schock

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is a common congenital heart defect characterized by a stenosis of the descending thoracic aorta. Surgical treatment can alleviate the stenosis and restore physiologic blood flow; however, patients frequently develop cardiovascular morbidity with hypertension (HTN) being most common. Identifying the mechanisms involved with the onset of HTN in CoA patients is difficult due to confounding factors including the severity of coarctation, age of correction, and general lifestyle factors. To account for the variability seen in humans, a rabbit model of CoA and correction was developed previously. Microarray analysis of aortic samples from the model showed …

Comparing The Effects Of Immediate Vs. Delayed Differential Reinforcement Of Zero Rate Behavior Schedules On Tic Suppression, Kristine T. Vo Oct 2022

Comparing The Effects Of Immediate Vs. Delayed Differential Reinforcement Of Zero Rate Behavior Schedules On Tic Suppression, Kristine T. Vo

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Persistent Tic Disorder and Tourette Disorder are neuropsychiatric conditions characterized by motor and or/ vocal tics. Treatment surrounding tics involve pharmaceutical or behavior therapy. Individuals seeking behavior therapy receive habit reversal training (HRT) or comprehensive behavioral intervention for tics (CBIT). Much research demonstrates the efficacy of HRT and CBIT, however, as these treatments often teach effective tic suppression skills, it may be useful to better understand the behavioral contingencies that most effectively lead to suppression. This research aims to compare different schedules of reinforcement on tic suppression. Two individuals diagnosed with Tourette’s Disorder, ages 9-14, participated in this study. A …

Comparison Of 3d Bio-Printed Ipsc-Cms Derived From Healthy Donors And Patients With Hlhs, Wei He Oct 2022

Comparison Of 3d Bio-Printed Ipsc-Cms Derived From Healthy Donors And Patients With Hlhs, Wei He

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is an extremely severe form of congenital heart disease, but current treatments are not adequate. In order to find more effective treatments, we need to reproduce in vitro the physiological characteristics of cardiomyocytes associated with HLHS. Such a tissue model could be of great help to current medical research, and 3D printing technology is an effective tool for this purpose. We print layer-by-layer cardiomyocytes from both healthy and HLHS patients with laminin-based bioink to form a three-dimensional model. With our 3D cell culture technology, this model can simulate the growth conditions of cardiomyocytes in vivo. …

Accelerometry-Based Self-Reported Fatigue Detection During Repeat Bouts Of Sub-Maximal Fatiguing Exercise, Jacob Michael Thomasson Cartwright Oct 2022

Accelerometry-Based Self-Reported Fatigue Detection During Repeat Bouts Of Sub-Maximal Fatiguing Exercise, Jacob Michael Thomasson Cartwright

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Successful sensor-based fatigue detection is an essential component of remote physical rehabilitation and activity monitoring healthcare systems. Several studies have investigated accelerometry use to detect the presence of neuromuscular fatigue pre- and post-extended bouts of exertion. Similarly, others have investigated the use of a plethora of other sensors to detect neuromuscular fatigue throughout fatiguing exercise. However, there are significant gaps in the literature concerning accelerometry-based neuromuscular fatigue detection throughout fatiguing exercise and the detection of perceived fatigue. Thus, the principal aim of this study was to develop a procedure capable of detecting perceived fatigue using data collected via wearable accelerometers …

Near Infrared Light Penetration In Human Tissue: An Analysis Of Tissue Structure And Heterogeneities, Paul Murray Koster Oct 2022

Near Infrared Light Penetration In Human Tissue: An Analysis Of Tissue Structure And Heterogeneities, Paul Murray Koster

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Low level laser irradiation (LLLI) has been a controversial method of therapy due to a limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms that could cause the irradiation to provide its proposed benefits – increased blood flow, vasodilation, cell attachment, and wound healing. Near infrared (NIR) light appears able to function with nitrates and enzymes around the electric transport chain to allow biologically available nitric oxide to be released from hemoglobin and myoglobin. Nitric oxide has been shown to be a part of a mechanism that promotes blood flow, vasodilation, and wound healing.NIR penetration in biological tissue is not well described due …
