Determination Of Optimal Time-Average Wind Speed Data In The Southern Part Of Malaysia, Daniel Derome, Halim Razali, Ahmad Fazlizan, Alias Jedi, Katie Purvis- Roberts

Baghdad Science Journal

Mersing is one of the places that have the potential for wind power development in Malaysia. Researchers often suggest it as an ideal place for generating electricity from wind power. However, before a location is chosen, several factors need to be considered. By analyzing the location ahead of time, resource waste can be avoided and maximum profitability to various parties can be realized. For this study, the focus is to identify the distribution of the wind speed of Mersing and to determine the optimal average of wind speed. This study is critical because the wind speed data for any region …

Identical twins Carl and Charles Thomas played basketball for Eastern Michigan University from 1987 until 1991. The Thomas twins helped the EMU men’s basketball team reach great heights from 1988-91. The then-Hurons won two Mid-American Conference titles (1987-88, 1990-91), made two NCAA Tournament appearances (1987-88, 1990-91) and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 1990-91 NCAA Tournament. In this interview, the Thomas brothers reflect on their respective paths to EMU, the mentorship and friendship of teammate Grant Long, the atmosphere at a Bowen Field House basketball game and the ups and downs of balancing academics with athletics. Both speakers emphasized …

Accounting For Toponyms With Multiple Classifiers In Colonial Valley Zapotec, Jasper E. Nash , '23 Oct 2022

Accounting For Toponyms With Multiple Classifiers In Colonial Valley Zapotec, Jasper E. Nash , '23

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

Toponyms are place names which have certain common linguistic properties across languages. Toponyms are typically formed by the combination of descriptive morphemes and noun classifiers (Ursini 2017). Southern Zapotec (SZ) languages are primarily spoken in the Southern Sierra Madre region of Oaxaca, Mexico. Southern Zapotec toponyms appear to have similar structures compared to those in the four languages analyzed by Ursini (2017), with spatial classifiers and descriptive morphemes merging to create a phrase which carries spatial features. Beam de Azcona (2012) categorizes Southern Zapotec toponyms according to whether there are no classifiers, one classifier, or multiple classifiers, as well as …

Viable Verbs And Adjectives For Mandarin Reduplication, Carrie Zhang , '23 Oct 2022

Viable Verbs And Adjectives For Mandarin Reduplication, Carrie Zhang , '23

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

In Chen Wang’s 2021 paper, the verb mingbai is used an example to prove his claim that for an AB word that could “be used potentially as either a verb or an adjective, its ABAB form tends to be verbal while its AABB form tends to be adjectival,” a claim that is also substantiated in Huang et. al (2009). As far as mingbai goes, this trend appears to be true, but does it apply to adjectives such as xuxin as well? This brief paper tests whether the claim about Chinese reduplication patterns holds true for other AB phrases, and looks …

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

Redefining Safety: Latinx Migrant Perspectives on School Safety in Rural Pennsylvania. High Schools aims to answer the research question: What does a safe educational space look like for rurally based high school students from immigrant families? This thesis draws on my lived experiences growing up in a mixed-status immigrant family in rural, PA. Drawing from anthropological and interdisciplinary research that explores how marginalized communities experience and navigate systemic violence, this thesis explores themes in the Latinx immigrant community such as a contradictory sense of hyper surveillance and invisibility. Inspired by abolitionist and geographer Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s research, I focus on …

The Role Of Museums In Educational Pedagogy And Community Engagement, Katherine E. Weber Oct 2022

The Role Of Museums In Educational Pedagogy And Community Engagement, Katherine E. Weber

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Museums provide exceptional opportunity for experiential and social/emotional learning that often cannot be simulated elsewhere. Schools and communities, however, are not taking full advantage of what these spaces have to offer. Learning science has indicated the need for more progressive education initiatives, making stronger partnerships between museums, schools, and communities imperative. Data was collected through surveys and interviews with museum education departments and K-12 teachers in the Chicagoland area to discuss available programs, usage, outcomes, and feedback for improvement. Analysis of data reiterated the positive role museums play in creating well-rounded, critically-thinking, emotionally intelligent individuals, who are civically engaged and …

Staying In Or Stepping Out? Growth Strategies Of Second-Generation Immigrant Entrepreneurs, Sarika Pruthi, Misagh Tasavori Oct 2022

Staying In Or Stepping Out? Growth Strategies Of Second-Generation Immigrant Entrepreneurs, Sarika Pruthi, Misagh Tasavori

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Second generation immigrant entrepreneurs (SGIEs) in developed economies have contributed to the emergence of new areas of business activity, especially in information technology, business services, and creative industries. An understanding of their growth strategies can shed light on the role of individual immigrants in the founding of potentially global firms competing with large multinational enterprises. Based on eleven case studies of SGIEs of Indian origin in the UK, our findings reveal that SGIEs are heterogeneous in their growth strategies contingent on their a) founding or succession context, and b) use of social ties. Founder SGIEs combining non-co-ethnic ties with non-family …

Burnout In The Field Of Forensic Psychology And Intervention Techniques, Taylor Gary

Dissertations

Forensic psychologists are at a heightened risk for encountering vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout, all of which influence quality and continuity of care (Sansbury et al., 2015). The current literature review aims to discuss how burnout relates specifically to the field of forensic psychology. For the purposes of this discussion, clinical psychologists who perform forensic duties, as well as board certified forensic psychologists are considered. Research questions that are addressed in this discussion include what the existing research states regarding vicarious trauma in forensic settings, likely gender differences in burnout and vicarious trauma, and documented interventions that appear most …

Decertification Of Qualified Opportunity Funds, Adam Wallwork Oct 2022

Decertification Of Qualified Opportunity Funds, Adam Wallwork

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In this article, the authors discuss how a self-certified Qualified Opportunity Fund (“QOF”) may relinquish that status through the QOF’s voluntary self-decertification or an involuntary decertification under the anti-abuse rules, and the consequences to tax-deferred investors in a QOF of either such decertification. It also discusses the recent guidance on QOF self-decertification, which initially appeared as a simple check-the-box election on line 6 of the November 6, 2020 draft of IRS Form 8996, Qualified Opportunity Fund, only to have that line removed entirely from the final version of that form. It also explores how the failure of the Internal Revenue …

Medical Martial Law: Towards A More Effective Pandemic Policy, John W. Bagby, Robert J. Aalberts, Chad G. Marzen Oct 2022

Medical Martial Law: Towards A More Effective Pandemic Policy, John W. Bagby, Robert J. Aalberts, Chad G. Marzen

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This article synthesizes the political-economic geography regime with existing political subdivision modeling to predict the legitimacy of various authorities that might order Medical Martial Law. Such “districting” authority, as limited by the Constitutional right to travel, reveals a range of authorities to declare and enforce remediation of emergencies under various legal frameworks within defined geographic areas. The primary interdisciplinary approach used here is public policy, political economy and economic geography. We demonstrate how the latter contributes greatly. First, the science of spatial understanding is offered by physical geographers for the physical barriers that shape political borders and may define contagion …

Into The Shadows: A Rule For The Prevention Of Shadow Trading, Randy L. Koonce Oct 2022

Into The Shadows: A Rule For The Prevention Of Shadow Trading, Randy L. Koonce

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

For the first time, market regulators in the United States are pursuing an individual for “shadow trading,” a form of insider trading relying upon comparator companies. Despite the Securities and Exchange Commission's status as a regulatory body, the agency has foregone the adoption of a formal rule against shadow trading. It is instead attempting to enlarge the scope of the common law's present definition of insider trading to a host of dangerous consequences. Rather than leave an unsuspecting public to guess whether conduct is prohibited, the agency should adopt a formal rule. This note examines the practicality of doing so …

Termination Of Parental Rights And An Assessment Of Rights To Subsequent Children In The State Of Illinois, Kayla C. Ranta Oct 2022

Termination Of Parental Rights And An Assessment Of Rights To Subsequent Children In The State Of Illinois, Kayla C. Ranta

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In the United States, it is considered a fundamental constitutional liberty for a parent to be able to control the upbringing of their children. Under this construction, unless a parent’s care reaches the extent of abuse or neglect, affecting a child’s health, welfare, or safety, they should be free to parent their child(ren). Yet, despite this construction, a finding of parental unfitness as to one child will allow an Illinois family court to terminate the parental rights of that individual toward all subsequent children. This process does not currently have any exceptions for parents whose circumstances have changed or who …

The Effect Of Isolation On The Mental Health Of Older Adults, Christina Yates Oct 2022

The Effect Of Isolation On The Mental Health Of Older Adults, Christina Yates

Senior Honors Theses

As individuals age and lose mobility and cognitive functioning, many require full-time care which their loved ones are unable to provide. This often results in placement into long-term care facilities, and these facilities are notorious for being understaffed. Physical health becomes the only priority, depriving the client of having their mental and emotional needs fulfilled. Family and friends may decrease visitation due to distance or convenience. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic closed the doors of many facilities to nearly all visitors. Thus, the only individuals the residents of these facilities experienced interaction with were overworked staff members looking intimidating in …

Intact Polar Brgdgts In Arctic Lake Catchments: Implications For Lipid Sources And Paleoclimate Applications, Jonathan H. Raberg, Edgart Flores, Sarah E. Crump, Greg De Wet, Nadia Dildar, Gifford H. Miller, Áslaug Geirsdóttir, Julio Sepúlveda

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Paleotemperature histories derived from lake sediment archives provide valuable context for modern and future climate changes. Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (brGDGT) lipids are a valuable tool in such pursuits due to their empirical correlation with temperature and near ubiquity in nature. However, the relative contributions of terrestrial and lacustrine sources of brGDGTs to lake sediments is site-dependent and difficult to constrain. Here, we explored the potential for intact brGDGTs—the complete lipids with polar head groups (HGs) still attached—to provide insight into the sources of brGDGTs on the landscape and their contributions to the sedimentary record in a set of …

Joint Angle Variability Is Altered In Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease After Six Months Of Exercise Intervention, Farahnaz Fallahtafti, Zahra Salamifar, Mahdi Hassan, Hafizur Rahman, Iraklis Pipinos, Sara A. Myers

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

Supervised exercise therapy (SET) is a conservative non-operative treatment strategy for improving walking performance in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). Gait variability is altered in patients with PAD, but the effect of SET on gait variability is unknown. Forty-three claudicating patients with PAD underwent gait analysis before and immediately after a 6-month SET program. Nonlinear gait variability was assessed using sample entropy, and the largest Lyapunov exponent of the ankle, knee, and hip joint angle time series. Linear mean and variability of the range of motion time series for these three joint angles were also calculated. Two-factor repeated measure …

The Coincidence Of Abernethy Malformation And Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome: A Case Report, Thipsumon Tangsiwong, Siriwan Wananukul, Panruethai Trinavarat

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Abernethy malformation was demonstrated in a 10-year-old boy, whose underlying disease of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) was achieved first-time-right diagnosis by cutaneous stigmata, presenting with persistent gross hematuria and hemodynamic instability secondary to vesical venous malformation. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) imaging was obtained to explore identifiable and treatable causes of the active bleeding, revealing Abernathy malformation and unusual visceral slow-flow vascular malformations including venous varicosities and splenic lymphangiomatosis. This is a first case report of the coincidence of Abernathy malformation and BRBNS. Imaging played an important role in detection of clinically occult congenital portal venous anomalies and visceral …
