La Malinche Or Malinalli?: The Narrative We Know Versus The Narrative We Should, Kiana Rodriguez Oct 2022

La Malinche Or Malinalli?: The Narrative We Know Versus The Narrative We Should, Kiana Rodriguez

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Born with the name Malinalli, La Malinche was an indigenous woman, part of the Nahua tribe, who was sold into slavery as a young girl. She was given as a gift to the Spanish upon their arrival to what we now know as Mexico, and she assisted Hernan Cortés in the conquest of Mexico through translations and guidance. Without her help, Cortés would have been lost, died, or had to turn back around. La Malinche is a complex figure as she is simultaneously viewed as a traitor by some, and hailed as the mother of Mexico by others. The purpose …

(Si10-062) Comprehensive Study On Methodology Of Orthogonal Interleavers, Priyanka Agarwal, Shivani Dixit, M. Shukla, Gaurish Joshi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Interleaving permutes the data bits by employing a user defined sequence to reduce burst error which at times exceeds the minimum hamming distance. It serves as the sole medium to distinguish user data in the overlapping channel and is the heart of Interleave Division Multiple Access (IDMA) scheme. Versatility of interleavers relies on various design parameters such as orthogonality, correlation, latency and performance parameters like bit error rate (BER), memory occupancy and computation complexity. In this paper, a comprehensive study of interleaving phenomenon and discussion on numerous interleavers is presented. Also, the BER performance of interleavers using IDMA scheme is …

Impact Of Training For Contraceptive Provision At Title X Clinics: Evidence From South Carolina - October 2022, Center For Applied Reasearch And Evaluation In Women's Health, East Tennessee State University

Center for Applied Research and Evaluation (CARE) in Women's Health Issue Briefs

Choose Well (CW), an ongoing statewide contraceptive access initiative in South Carolina, was launched in 2017 and aimed to implement contraceptive care best practices via training and funding for contraceptive methods. As part of the initiative, clinics within the South Carolina Health Department (DHEC clinics), which is the state’s Title X agency, received trainings in the areas of administrative support, contraceptive counseling, and device placement and removal, in addition to funding for contraceptive devices. Title X Family Planning program is a federal program that provides reproductive health services for low-income patients through a network of safety–net clinics. While Title X …

Big Lagoon Sea Level Rise, Kyra Cohen, Malia Seeley, Dustin Helliwell, Albert Wolff

Student Projects

Cal Poly Humboldt Environmental Resources Engineering Senior Capstone.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is highly concerned sea level rise (SLR), due to climate change and the potential negative impacts on the California transportation system. SLR is especially important for routes constructed at low elevations and those immediately adjacent to the coast where SLR is one of the largest threats to the transportation system along the coast. Rising sea levels are expected to disrupt the daily lives of Californians, specifically the coastal economies, which increases the risk to public safety and contributes to the decline of ecosystems that are vital …

Understanding The Global Refugee Crisis [Paralegal Studies], Andrea R. Irias Oct 2022

Understanding The Global Refugee Crisis [Paralegal Studies], Andrea R. Irias

Open Educational Resources

This assignment was designed to meet the criteria of the Global Learning competency and Written ability rubrics. Although it was created for the Paralegal Program, it was not made to fit one specific course as we are unsure where it fits best in the program. As we continue to experiment with placement, we have piloted this assignment in two different courses (BTP203 and BTP205) with similar results. It was designed for students to complete outside of the classroom as homework with minimal in-class instruction as the content of the assignment did not truly fit in the courses that held it …

2022-October-01-Spooky Spotlight - Lucille Clement Hall, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

You hear marbles rolling on the top floor. You may hear a young boy say hello. You venture up the steps, however, and find no one is there.

So goes the spooky story recounted by dozens of students and staff over the years from Lucille Clement Hall, a five-floor housing unit on ETSU’s campus.

It’s the legend of “Marble Boy.” The gist: Many years ago, a young boy died falling down an elevator shaft after dropping his marbles. Now, he occupies the same building he perished in.

Beware the "Marble Boy"

Yelling at the ghost to stop doesn’t seem to …

Coded: Dialect Diversity In The Secondary American Classroom, Madeline Dunn

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the differences between dialects along racial, cultural, and ethnic lines with a specific focus on Black and Latine students inside the public secondary classrooms of America. The focus of the paper is on two linguistic tactics: “code-switching,” a linguistic practice which teaches students to separate their home language from the language they use in formal or professional settings, and “code-meshing,” a linguistic practice to teach students how to mesh together multiple dialects with which a student is familiar. Through the creation of a historical framework and an analysis of existing literature, theory, and pedagogical practices regarding the …

The Law And Politics Of Ransomware, Asaf Lubin

Articles by Maurer Faculty

What do Lady Gaga, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, the city of Valdez in Alaska, and the court system of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul all have in common? They have all been victims of ransomware attacks, which are growing both in number and severity. In 2016, hackers perpetrated roughly four thousand ransomware attacks a day worldwide, a figure which was already alarming. By 2020, however, ransomware attacks reached a staggering number, between 20,000 and 30,000 per day in the United States alone. That is a ransomware attack every eleven seconds, each of which cost victims …

Holding Residential Property On Inter Vivos Trusts In Singapore: Transfers Of Interests, Vincent Ooi Oct 2022

Holding Residential Property On Inter Vivos Trusts In Singapore: Transfers Of Interests, Vincent Ooi

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As a response to the “missing beneficial owner” problem highlighted by the Zhao Hui Fang case, amendments have been made to Singapore’s stamp duty regime. ABSD will now be levied at 35% on transfers of residential property to trustees, with a remission available if certain conditions are met. These conditions effectively mean that residential property held on inter vivos trusts in Singapore must be given to beneficiaries without conditions or powers of revocation or variation. This has major ramifications for succession planning, since such restrictions largely defeat the purpose of using a trust to hold property in the first place.

A Grounded Theory On Becoming A Revolutionary Latinx Student Leader, Eva Martinez Powless Oct 2022

A Grounded Theory On Becoming A Revolutionary Latinx Student Leader, Eva Martinez Powless

Dissertations (1934 -)

Research on the leadership experiences of Latinx college students and diverse populations suggests differences in the way these populations experience leadership on the college campus when compared to their White counterparts. These differences put Latinx students and other diverse student populations at a disadvantage and on the margins of leadership education. This qualitative, grounded theory study explored the leadership experiences of 11 undergraduate Latinx college students in the United States. The theory inducted from the data, and the three-stage model, brought to light three themes and 19 processes that explain how Latinx students become “revolutionary leaders” in college. A revolutionary …
