Prohibiting Slavery & The Slave Trade, Jocelyn Getgen Kestenbaum
Prohibiting Slavery & The Slave Trade, Jocelyn Getgen Kestenbaum
Articles
Slavery and the slave trade stubbornly persist in our time, but they receive insufficient attention in international human rights law. Even when courts adjudicate slavery violations, they often fail to characterize slave trade conduct that nearly always precedes slavery. Courts also characterize acts that meet the definition of slavery or the slave trade only as other human rights harms, such as forced labor or human trafficking. This failure to accurately characterize violations also as slavery and the slave trade perpetuates impunity and denies victims full expressive justice. This Article argues for reviving international human rights law’s prohibitions of slavery and …
The Ascension Of Indigenous Cultural Property Law, Angela R. Riley
The Ascension Of Indigenous Cultural Property Law, Angela R. Riley
Michigan Law Review
Indigenous Peoples across the world are calling on nation-states to “decolonize” laws, structures, and institutions that negatively impact them. Though the claims are broad based, there is a growing global emphasis on issues pertaining to Indigenous Peoples’ cultural property and the harms of cultural appropriation, with calls for redress increasingly framed in the language of human rights. Over the last decade, Native people have actively fought to defend their cultural property. The Navajo Nation sued Urban Outfitters to stop the sale of “Navajo panties,” the Quileute Tribe sought to enjoin Nordstrom’s marketing of “Quileute Chokers,” and the descendants of Tasunke …

The Prevalence Of Domestic Servitude Among Child Domestic Workers In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: Research Findings, Annabel Erulkar, Lemi Negeri, Eyasu Hailu
The Prevalence Of Domestic Servitude Among Child Domestic Workers In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: Research Findings, Annabel Erulkar, Lemi Negeri, Eyasu Hailu
Adolescents and Young People
It is estimated that there are 17.2 million child domestic workers globally, most of whom are girls. Research related to this marginalized group is limited, with most at a small scale or subsumed in other topics, such as domestic workers generally. The dearth of evidence limits awareness about girls in such circumstances and inhibits the design and implementation of context-appropriate policy and program responses. This mixed-method study is one of the few large-scale studies to examine child domestic work, including its prevalence, the entry and experience of girls in this work, and levels of human trafficking, hazardous work, and illegal …

A Forgotten ‘Riot’: Discovering The Black Cat Tavern Raid’S Place In Queer History, Katelyn "Katie" Nash
A Forgotten ‘Riot’: Discovering The Black Cat Tavern Raid’S Place In Queer History, Katelyn "Katie" Nash
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The Black Cat Tavern Raid of 1967 has long been relegated to the footnotes of history, and, when it is remembered, it is portrayed as a riot similar to the one that occurred at the Stonewall Inn two years later. Using archival and contemporary sources, this article explores the events surrounding the raid and subsequent protest and places them within the greater context of the 1960s. In addition, I contextualize and analyze the legacy of these events, explore their often overlooked contributions to queer history, and conclude that, while they are often overshadowed by Stonewall, they still deserve to be …

EERC Publications, Papers, & Presentations
In this paper, a fuzzy logic-based charging strategy is proposed for electric vehicles (EVs) to provide a stable frequency response for a weak grid (WG)-microgrid. Along with the frequency control, another fuzzy charging method is designed for EV to increase the revenue for the EV charging station owner.

How Do Changes In Family Role Status Impact Employees? An Empirical Investigation, Matthew B. Perrigino, Ellen Ernst Kossek, Rebecca J. Thompson, Todd Bodner
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Purpose – Despite the proliferation of work–family research, a thorough understanding of family role status changes (e.g. the gaining of elder or child caregiving responsibilities) remain under-theorized and under-examined. The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize various forms of family role status changes and examine the ways in which these changes influence various employee outcomes.
Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected as part of the work–family health study. Using a longitudinal, three-wave study with two-time lags of 6 months (n = 151 family role status changes; n = 392 individuals with family role stability), this study uses one-way analysis of …

Sohm Starz Will Never Align: How The Split Between The 2nd And 9th Circuits Will Impact Damages In Copyright Cases, Candace Sundine
Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review
The Second Circuit and the Ninth Circuit are currently divided on the issue of how far back a copyright owning plaintiff in a copyright infringement can collect in damages against a continuing infringer. The Second Circuit states that the Copyright Act’s three-year statute of limitations and the discovery rule only permit plaintiffs to collect damages three years back from the date they bring their infringement action. However, the Ninth Circuit states that the three-year statute of limitations is only concerned with the timing in which a plaintiff brings her infringement action, and that she can recover all of the damages …

Filamentous Green Algae (Cladophora Glomerata) In Near Shore Lake Ontario: An Investigation Of Tissue And Water Nutrient Dynamics Through A Period Of Growth And Decomposition., James L. Wagner Jr
Biology Theses
Cladophora glomerata, a filamentous green alga abundant in the Laurentian Great Lakes, has long been considered a nuisance throughout the region. Previous phosphorus (P) abatement practices and legislation successfully reduced the abundance of the algae, but with the introduction of dreissenid mussels, a resurgence has been observed. Though there is substantial literature and modeling of the growth cycle of Cladophora, relatively little research has been dedicated to the decomposition stage of the algae, a period which may contribute to a substantial influx of nutrients to near-shore environmental regions. By first examining a period of in-situ growth within Lake …

Music And Incitement To Violence: Anti-Muslim Hate Music In Burma/Myanmar, Heather Maclachlan
Music And Incitement To Violence: Anti-Muslim Hate Music In Burma/Myanmar, Heather Maclachlan
Department of Music Faculty Publications
his article examines a corpus of Burmese-language anti-Muslim hate songs archived on YouTube. Burma/Myanmar is the site of recent genocidal violence perpetrated against Muslims, and these songs are part of the hate speech campaign that undergirds this violence. Using the definition of incitement articulated by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the article shows that the lyrics of these songs constitute incitement to violence. Further, the comments written by YouTube listeners provide evidence that the songs provoke additional dehumanizing speech. The songs and their creators are therefore complicit in the recent violent persecution of Muslims in Myanmar.

My Abject Body: Dissimulating & Disheveling Fleshy Matter, Taylor Hoople
My Abject Body: Dissimulating & Disheveling Fleshy Matter, Taylor Hoople
Architecture Thesis Prep
Body (as subject) and space (as object) are polarized entities in modern discourse and design. The current epoch of hygiene, control, and mass-production/ consumption renders the body and the space(s) it inhabits as whole, discrete entities. In their totality, body and space are idealized opposites, failing to experience any messy overlaps or ambiguous in-betweenness. My feminine body is particularly subject to this dualism, being tightly bound to the legal and social patriarchal dominance over my body’s autonomy and appearance.
This thesis seeks to corrupt my hyper-aestheticized and policed body by making (with) abject( ion). Understood both as an ongoing condition …
Converting Hydrazone-Based Photoswitches Into Functional Materials, Sirun Yang
Converting Hydrazone-Based Photoswitches Into Functional Materials, Sirun Yang
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The development of new classes of molecular switches with enhanced performance and brand-new functionalities enables practitioners to push the frontiers of adaptive materials. In the realm of photoswitches, the bistability of hydrazones (i.e., molecules that incorporate the C=N-NH functional group) allows for the kinetic trapping of polymer and supramolecular assemblies resulting in multistate actuation and emergent phenomena that are not tractable with other photoswitches. This property has transformed hydrazone photoswitches into powerful tools that can be used in understanding fundamental molecular interactions and how to apply them in modulating the physicochemical properties of materials.

Librarian-Faculty Collaboration For Literacy Courses: Promoting Better Learning For Preservice Teachers, Annamary Consalvo, Gina M. Doepker, Vandy Dubre, Joanna L. Neel Dr.
Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
This narrative describes a collaboration between three university literacy faculty and a subject librarian undertaken to embed library instruction across the semester in three required courses--children’s literature, early literacy, and disciplinary literacy--in order to help undergraduate preservice teachers better understand and incorporate children’s literature and high interest literature into their teaching. Concrete, scaffolded, hands-on experiences for preservice teachers with teaching materials helped to build awareness of foundational concepts in literacy instruction. Librarian/faculty collaborations have the potential to improve literacy teacher preparation programs by providing designed opportunities for active, concrete engagement coupled with structured reflection.

The False codling moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta is a major quarantine pest that hampers Capsicum production and trade in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and may need a postharvest treatment to meet quarantine standards of lucrative overseas markets. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of hot water treatment (HWT) as a potential nonchemical quarantine control option against T. leucotreta in bell pepper and its effect on the quality parameters of the peppers. Infested bell pepper harboring different immature stages of T. leucotreta were subjected to a hot water treatment of 50 ± 0.2 °C for eight different time-points to determine heat …
The Dynamics And Role Of Gender In High-Value Avocado Farming In Kenya, Beatrice Muriithi, Jane Kabubo-Mariara
The Dynamics And Role Of Gender In High-Value Avocado Farming In Kenya, Beatrice Muriithi, Jane Kabubo-Mariara
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
We used two-wave panel data obtained from avocado growers in Murang’a County in Kenya to examine, through the perspective of gender, the dynamics of farmers’ participation in avocado production and marketing organizations (PMOs), and test whether understanding group dynamics is important for analyzing contract farming. Using a multinomial logit (MNL) model, we identify the characteristics of men and women participating in PMOs categorized as early adopters, dis-adopters, late adopters, and non-adopters. We focus on dis-adopters and late adopters because these categories are most often ignored in the literature. Moreover, without considering the dynamics, we verify the influencing factors of PMOs …
