Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Autoantibody-Associated Glomerulonephritis As A Possible Side Effect Of Covid-19 Vaccination., Edva Noel, Urmiya Rashid, Rizwan Rabbani, Waqas Ahmad Khan, Yves-Smith Benjamin, Iris Lee

Internal Medicine Resident Research

Vaccination is the principal tool aimed at curbing the COVID-19 pandemic that has, so far, affected tens of millions of individuals in the United States. The two available mRNA vaccines developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna possess high efficacy in preventing infection and illness severity. However, there are multiple side effects associated with these vaccines, some impacting different organs. Renal pathology is variable, with increasing cases of glomerulonephritis being observed. We report a rare acute kidney injury case due to antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-mediated glomerulonephritis after administering a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Aggravation and/or development of autoimmunity …

An Update And Report Failure Of Surgical Syndactyly Repair In Harlequin Ichthyosis., Elias H Kahan, Brian Temple, Logan Carr, Elizabeth Zellner

Plastic Surgery Resident Research

Harlequin ichthyosis (HI) is a rare congenital skin disorder caused by irregular epidermal differentiation. Syndactyly in HI is associated with thick hyperkeratotic skin flexion and angulation deformity of the hand and fingers resulting in limited function of the upper extremity. Traditional syndactyly release is limited as full-thickness skin grafts typically used in reconstruction are composed of diseased skin and require donor sites in a patient predisposed for adverse wound healing. This case report is a follow-up to a previous viewpoint written about digital escharotomies in a newborn with HI and outlines a second and fourth webspace syndactyly release with a …

The VRS-F2 diploid population was produced by selfing a single F1 (16_9_2) developed from a cross between V. riparia Michx. (seed parent, ‘Manitoba 37’, PI#588289) and V. sp. ‘Seyval blanc’ (pollen parent, VIVC#11558) (Fennell et al., 2005). Six-year-old potted VRS-F2 vines for this study were cycled annually through the greenhouse and cold storage in South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD (44.31̊ N, 96.80̊ W). The ecodormant vines were root pruned and repotted in soil, perlite, and peat growing medium (1:2:2 by volume) and grown …

Sensation Seeking And Adolescent Drinking: Do Protective Behavioral Strategies Lower Risk?, Diana M. Doumas, G. Michael Russo, Raissa Miller, Susan Esp, Nadine R. Mastroleo, Rob Turrisi

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using a cross-sectional design, we examined protective behavioral strategies (PBS) as a moderator of the relationship between sensation seeking and hazardous drinking and alcohol-related consequences among high school seniors (N = 212). Hierarchical regression analyses indicated sensation seeking was a significant predictor of binge drinking (β = 0.65, p < 0.001), prepartying (β = 0.71, p < 0.001), gaming (β = 0.75, p < 0.001), and alcohol-related consequences (β = 0.69, p < 0.001). Further, PBS moderated these relationships such that among high sensation seeking adolescents, PBS use was associated with better outcomes, including lower levels of binge drinking (β = −0.37, p < 0.01), prepartying (β = −0.44, p < 0.01), gaming (β = −0.31, p < 0.05), and alcohol-related consequences (β = −0.53, p < 0.001). We discuss counseling implications, including assessment and harm reduction strategies focusing on PBS to reduce hazardous drinking among high sensation seeking adolescents.

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Severe drought conditions and extreme weather events are increasing worldwide with climate change, threatening the persistence of native plant communities and ecosystems. Many studies have investigated the genomic basis of plant responses to drought. However, the extent of this research throughout the plant kingdom is unclear, particularly among species critical for the sustainability of natural ecosystems. This study aimed to broaden our understanding of genome-to-phenome (G2P) connections in drought-stressed plants and identify focal taxa for future research. Bioinformatics pipelines were developed to mine and link information from databases and abstracts from 7730 publications. This approach identified 1634 genes involved in …

Liver allocation in the United States was updated on February 4, 2020, by introducing the acuity circle (AC)-based model. This study evaluated the early effects of the AC-based allocation on waitlist outcomes.

METHODS: Adult liver transplant (LT) candidates listed between January 1, 2019, and September 30, 2021, were assessed. Two periods were defined according to listing date (pre- and post-AC), and 90-d waitlist outcomes were compared. Median transplant Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) score of each transplant center was calculated, with centers categorized as low- (<25 percentile), mid- (25-75 percentile), and high-MELD (>75 percentile) centers.

RESULTS: A total of 12 421 and 17 078 LT …

Glenns Ferry Animal Shelter, Reyna Riemenapp Oct 2022

Glenns Ferry Animal Shelter, Reyna Riemenapp

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

My capstone project was an action-project. During the development of this project, I partnered with the Glenns Ferry, ID, animal shelter. My goal was to help this small town in Idaho with its animal shelter because it relies 100% on donations to care for its dogs. I was saddened to hear that the shelter was having trouble feeding the dogs, so I decided to help by collecting food, toys, and dog supplies. Aside from asking family, friends, and coworkers for donations, I also contacted local Zamzows pet and gardening stores for donations of food and dog supplies. Also, I decided …

Implicit Surface Reconstruction With A Curl-Free Radial Basis Function Partition Of Unity Method, Kathryn P. Drake, Edward J. Fuselier, Grady B. Wright Oct 2022

Implicit Surface Reconstruction With A Curl-Free Radial Basis Function Partition Of Unity Method, Kathryn P. Drake, Edward J. Fuselier, Grady B. Wright

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Surface reconstruction from a set of scattered points, or a point cloud, has many applications ranging from computer graphics to remote sensing. We present a new method for this task that produces an implicit surface (zero-level set) approximation for an oriented point cloud using only information about (approximate) normals to the surface. The technique exploits the fundamental result from vector calculus that the normals to an implicit surface are curl-free. By using curl-free radial basis function (RBF) interpolation of the normals, we can extract a potential for the vector field whose zero-level surface approximates the point cloud. We use curl-free …

Liposome Formulation For Tumor-Targeted Drug Delivery Using Radiation Therapy, Daniel Fologea Oct 2022

Liposome Formulation For Tumor-Targeted Drug Delivery Using Radiation Therapy, Daniel Fologea

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Targeted delivery of drugs or other therapeutic agents through internal or external triggers has been used to control and accelerate the release from liposomal carriers in a number of studies, but relatively few utilize energy of therapeutic X-rays as a trigger. We have synthesized liposomes that are triggered by ionizing radiation (RTLs) to release their therapeutic payload. These liposomes are composed of natural egg phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC), cholesterol, and 1,2-disteroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[methoxy (polyethylene glycol)-2000] (DSPE-PEG-2000), and the mean size of the RTL was in the range of 114 to 133 nm, as measured by nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). The trigger mechanism …

Evolving Esg Reporting Governance, Regime Theory, And Proactive Law: Predictions And Strategies, Adam Sulkowski, Ruth Jebe Oct 2022

Evolving Esg Reporting Governance, Regime Theory, And Proactive Law: Predictions And Strategies, Adam Sulkowski, Ruth Jebe

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Transparency on ESG (environmental, social, and governance) is an important, if imperfect, step in striving for sustainability. Because a constellation of nonprofit organizations created voluntary reporting frameworks with little government involvement, ESG reporting governance is institutionally dense and fragmented. Reporting companies and information users have both expressed dissatisfaction. In 2020, standard-setting organizations indicated their intent to cooperate to simplify ESG reporting rules. In a different yet similar context, scholars utilize regime theory to understand institutional density and the potential for international cooperation, primarily among states. This article is the first to apply regime theory to ESG reporting governance architecture to …

Bounds On Cohomological Support Varieties, Benjamin Briggs, Eloisa Grifo, Josh Pollitz Oct 2022

Bounds On Cohomological Support Varieties, Benjamin Briggs, Eloisa Grifo, Josh Pollitz

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Over a local ring R, the theory of cohomological support varieties attaches to any bounded complex M of finitely generated R-modules an algebraic variety VR(M) that encodes homological properties of M. We give lower bounds for the dimension of VR(M) in terms of classical invariants of R. In particular, when R is Cohen-Macaulay and not complete intersection we find that there are always varieties that cannot be realized as the cohomological support of any complex. When M has finite projective dimension, we also give an upper bound for dimVR(M) in terms of the dimension of the radical of the homotopy …

Glutathione And Glutaredoxin In Redox Regulation And Cell Signaling Of The Lens, Marjorie F. Lou Oct 2022

Glutathione And Glutaredoxin In Redox Regulation And Cell Signaling Of The Lens, Marjorie F. Lou

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The ocular lens has a very high content of the antioxidant glutathione (GSH) and the enzymes that can recycle its oxidized form, glutathione disulfide (GSSG), for further use. It can be synthesized in the lens and, in part, transported from the neighboring anterior aqueous humor and posterior vitreous body. GSH is known to protect the thiols of the structural lens crystallin proteins from oxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS) so the lens can maintain its transparency for proper visual function. Age-related lens opacity or senile cataract is the major visual impairment in the general population, and its cause is closely …
