Physicochemical Analysis Of Cold Brew And Hot Brew Peaberry Coffee, Evan T. Schwarzmann, Marlena P. Washington, Niny Z. Rao Oct 2022

Physicochemical Analysis Of Cold Brew And Hot Brew Peaberry Coffee, Evan T. Schwarzmann, Marlena P. Washington, Niny Z. Rao

College of Life Sciences Faculty Papers

Peaberry coffee is the result of a natural mutation of coffee beans, and they make up only about 5–7% of coffee crops. A typical coffee cherry contains two seeds that are developed against each other, resulting in the distinctive half-rounded shape of coffee beans. However, failing to fertilize both ovules of one of the seeds or failure in endosperm development can cause only one of the seeds to develop, resulting in smaller, denser beans with a more domed shape. Peaberry coffees are said to be sweeter, lighter, and more flavorful since the peaberry beans receive all nutrients from the coffee …

Dietary Interventions For Gastroparesis: A Systematic Review, Debra Eseonu, Tanya Su, Keya Lee, Bruno P Chumpitazi, Robert J Shulman, Ruben Hernaez

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Gastroparesis (Gp) is a delay in gastric emptying in the absence of a mechanical obstruction and has the capacity to cause symptoms that significantly impact a patient's quality of life. Dietary interventions are the first-line treatment in Gp, but the efficacy of different diets is unclear. This systematic review seeks to determine the effectiveness of dietary interventions on clinical outcomes in Gp. A literature search of MEDLINE Ovid from 1 March 2008 to 1 October 2021 was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and cross-sectional studies that reported dietary interventions in Gp. From the initial search, 2789 studies …

Hybrid Theory: Creation Of A Faculty Position That Allows Half-Time Hospice Employment Alongside Academic Palliative Care, Michael Cafarchio, Dierdre M. Salanger, W. Anthony Riley, Amanda Vanderzyl, Catherine Y. Hamel, Thomas J. Smith, Danielle J. Doberman

Administration Articles

BACKGROUND: The specialty of hospice and palliative medicine struggles to merge the fast-paced technological consultative work of acute hospital palliative care with slower paced and home-based hospice. Each has equal if different merits. Here, we describe creation of a position that allowed half-time hospice employment, alongside academic hospital-based palliative care.

METHODS: Johns Hopkins Medicine and Gilchrist, Inc., a large nonprofit hospice, partnered to form a joint position with time spent equally between the two locations.

RESULTS: Created as a university position with "leasing" to the hospice, specific attention has been paid to mentoring at both sites to allow professional advancement. …

Utilizing Ai To Share The Research And History Of Swanton Pacific Ranch, Evangeline Barruel, Norman Chang, Edik Chekhanovsky, Lolia Mccoy, Melissa Wesolowski

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Since the CZU Lightning Complex fire of August 2020 burned through most of the buildings and historical data that resided at Swanton Pacific Ranch (SPR), finding a new way to share the land’s rich history has become imperative. The purpose of our project was to do just that. We aimed to create an interactive chatbot called “Poppy” that could be accessible both online and at SPR, allowing users to learn more about the ranch and its surrounding areas. This chatbot allows users to explore a multi-level map of the ranch, ask any questions they may have about the ranch, and …

Perceptions And Utilization Of A Multimedia Teaching Strategy To Prevent Student Nurse Attrition, Lorretta Krautscheid, Pamela Fifer, Rebecca Hernandez, Taryn Blum

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

Untethered Lecture Capture (ULC) is a teaching method facilitating student classroom engagement while simultaneously creating audiovisual lecture capture (LC) resources. This single-site, convergent parallel mixed-methods study qualitatively described how nursing students with attrition risk factors perceived ULC influenced learning and quantified how such students utilized LC. Study participants (N = 28) reported watching most LC resources (57.1%) and 42.9% watched entire LC videos from start to finish. Qualitative findings produced new evidence about untethered faculty proximity in the classroom and ULC techniques supporting in-class focus and post-class self-paced learning efficiencies. Findings help nurse educators prioritize instructional methods among students with …

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

Recent years have witnessed the proliferation of offensive content online such as fake news, propaganda, misinformation, and disinformation. While initially this was mostly about textual content, over time images and videos gained popularity, as they are much easier to consume, attract more attention, and spread further than text. As a result, researchers started leveraging different modalities and combinations thereof to tackle online multimodal offensive content. In this study, we offer a survey on the state-of-the-art on multimodal disinformation detection covering various combinations of modalities: text, images, speech, video, social media network structure, and temporal information. Moreover, while some studies focused …

Intertextualidad Y Cultura En La Traducción Literaria De Gods Of Jade And Shadow Por Silvia Moreno-García, Mayra Can Oct 2022

Intertextualidad Y Cultura En La Traducción Literaria De Gods Of Jade And Shadow Por Silvia Moreno-García, Mayra Can

Theses and Dissertations

Language and culture are inextricably connected. This bond represents a constant challenge for translators. Novels and other literary texts add intertextuality to the mix, often complicating the linguistic transmission of all the pertinent elements from the source text to the target text. Current translation theories by Katharina Reiss, Lawrence Venuti, Christiane Nord, among others, offer analyses, explanations, strategies, and techniques to meet the challenges.

The aim of this thesis is to provide a faithful, idiomatic, and authoritative English to Spanish translation of three selected chapters of Gods of Jade and Shadow, a historical fantasy novel by Mexican-Canadian writer Silvia …

Cle Working Paper No. 3/2022--What Is The Test For Interlocutory Injunctions Affecting Homeless Encampments? A Critique Of Vancouver Fraser Port Authority V Brett And Associated Case Law, Stepan Wood

Centre for Law and the Environment

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority v Brett (VFPA v Brett), decided in 2020, marked a new low in judicial responses to the intersecting crises of housing, homelessness, poverty, toxic drugs, mental health, racism and colonialism. By dropping to the ground the already low bar for granting interlocutory injunctions to evict homeless encampments from publicly owned land i n BC, this decision invites a critical assessment of BC courts’ approach to homeless encampment injunctions. In this paper I present the first comprehensive survey of 21st century BC homeless encampment interlocutory injunction applications, which shows that they have an extremely high …

Revenge Porn: The Result Of A Lack Of Privacy In An Internet-Based Society, Shelbie M. Mora

Privacy Certificate Student Publications

This paper is about revenge porn statutes within and outside of the United States and their privacy consequences to victims. This paper focuses heavily on two state laws and reviews a case in each state and then explains the implications the ruling has on victims. With other countries' statutes, the paper primarily focuses on penalties for violations. To finish, there is a review of a failed proposed US statute and then I propose my own law and penalties.

Mask-Less Shopping Is Like Drunk Driving, Jonathan Spelman Oct 2022

Mask-Less Shopping Is Like Drunk Driving, Jonathan Spelman

Philosophy and Religion Faculty Scholarship

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, many states in the U.S. issued stayat-home orders that prohibited people from leaving their homes except to access essential services. Upon reopening, a number of those states passed mask mandates requiring people to wear face coverings while in public, but as I write this, in October of 2020, there remain a substantial number of states that have not outlawed what I’ll call ‘maskless shopping’. This is a mistake. After describing the standard, public health argument for outlawing mask-less shopping and explaining why it fails, I give a better argument for outlawing mask-less shopping that …
