Dipl 6001 The Politics Of Cultural And Ethnic Diversity In The Contemporary World, Margarita M. Balmaceda Ph.D.

Diplomacy Syllabi

Current challenges to multiculturalism and to the peaceful coexistence of various ethnic and cultural groups in the US and beyond challenge us to re-examine various models of dealing with cultural and ethnic diversity at the level of states, societies, and local communities. This course examines these issues through a focus on the 'organization of diversity'. After an examination of the development of the concept of 'nation' and its political uses, it proceeds to an analysis of different models of recognizing (or not) this diversity and organizing it as part of the institutional setup of the state and its policies. Three …

Dipl 6310 Research Methods For Policy Analysis, Brian K. Muzás Ph.D.

Diplomacy Syllabi

The objectives of this class are twofold.

The first goal is to develop a critical understanding of the use of scientific research in the practice and academic study of international affairs. While we will consider issues central to all research and some unique to qualitative analysis, the emphasis in this class is quantitative research. Whether you are primarily interested in security, finance, development, trade, or social issues, much research that is likely of interest to you uses some form of quantitative analysis. This is equally true for policy reports published by the UN, World Bank, Brookings, RAND, or other relevant …

Unmasking The Tipping Point For The Next U.S. Financial Crisis, Darrol J. Stanley, Donald M. Atwater

Graziadio Working Paper Series

The risks of the next U.S. Financial Crisis are increasing. Many Americans are fearful of the very negative financial impact of the next crisis especially since it could occur so soon after the negative impact of the Covid Pandemic on the economy. Financial safety nets are weak. The scope of the crisis includes decreasing values of assets, a recession caused by government policies, decreases in the value of existing bonds, and significant social stress fueled by political polarization after the 2022 midterm elections. We believe the solution to the fear begins with knowledge and a logical approach to assess key …

Dominant Frequency Extraction For Operational Underwater Sound Of Offshore Wind Turbines Using Adaptive Stochastic Resonance, Rongxin Wang, Xiaomei Xu, Zheguang Zou, Longfei Huang, Yi Tao

Faculty and Student Publications

Underwater sound generated by the rapidly increasing offshore wind farms worldwide greatly affects the underwater soundscape and may cause long-term cumulative effects on sound-sensitive marine organisms. However, its analysis and impact assessment are heavily interfered with by underwater ambient noise. In this study, an adaptive stochastic resonance method is proposed to extract the dominant frequency of wind turbine operational sound when heavy noise is present. In particular, a time–frequency–amplitude fusion index was proposed to guide the parameter tuning of an adaptive stochastic resonance system, and an equilibrium optimizer based on the physical dynamic source–sink principle was adopted to optimize the …

The Importance Of Clarification Of Auditors' Responsibilities Under The New Audit Reporting Standards*, Ann G. Backof, Kendall Bowlin, Brian M. Goodson Oct 2022

The Importance Of Clarification Of Auditors' Responsibilities Under The New Audit Reporting Standards*, Ann G. Backof, Kendall Bowlin, Brian M. Goodson

Faculty and Student Publications

Given the uncertainty regarding auditors' responsibilities, standard setters considered the need for clarification of technical terms such as reasonable assurance in the new audit reporting models. The PCAOB ultimately decided to exclude clarifying language from its final standard, while the Auditing Standards Board and IAASB made such language mandatory. Given the difference in reporting models, this study investigates the role clarification of reasonable assurance plays in auditor negligence. We predict and find that, absent clarification, jurors judge auditors to be more negligent when the audit report includes a related critical audit matters disclosure than when it does not. However, consistent …

Validity is a crucial issue in test development because it represents the accuracy of test score interpretation in describing the measured attribute or construct. Among validity evidence that can be collected to support test score interpretation, the one based on test content incited controversies. The content-based validity evidence includes analyses of the relationship between test content and the construct the test purported to measure. Some authors opposed the use of such evidence in the validation process, arguing that the evidence can only provide hypotheses to be tested in the subsequent processes. Other authors argued that the content validation process provided …

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic demanded employees work from home (Ishak & Mangundjaya, 2020). The work-from-home regulation provides several advantages, including high work flexibility. However, this regulation also creates excessive workloads and requires employees to work overtime due to various challenges from superiors with short deadlines. This situation encouraged researchers to develop an accurate psychological scale to identify the employees/ working stress. The scale comprised physical and mental individual responses to managing their uncomfortable work environment. It consists of 48 items measuring four dimensions: role overload, role conflict, role ambiguity, and role responsibility. The participants responded to the items by …

Consumers are known to signal social status through their purchasing behaviors. As the food industry continually expands its use of strategic marketing to reach customers, understanding food’s connection to this kind of status signaling may open the door to explore new markets for farmers. This study explored the influence of social status, physical activity, and socio-demographics on an individual’s willingness to pay for a basket of high-quality organic foods. Over 3 days, participants had their physical activity measured by a pedometer, and they were randomly assigned to a social status condition and subsequently placed bids for the organic food basket …

In our natural product screening program, we screened natural products for their repellency and toxicity against insect vectors. Methanolic extract of aerial parts of Stenaria nigricans (Lam.), with no published chemistry, was tested for repellency against mosquitoes and imported hybrid fire ants. Methanolic extracts showed biting deterrence similar to DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) against Aedes aegypti L. Based on this activity, the crude extract was fractionated into chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol subfractions. The active methanolic subfraction was further fractionated into 13 subfractions. These fractions were tested for their biting deterrence against Ae. Aegypti. Active subfractions were further characterized to identify the …

Hiv-1 Tat Upregulates The Receptor For Advanced Glycation End Products And Superoxide Dismutase-2 In The Heart Of Transgenic Mice, Alaa N. Qrareya, Nason S. Wise, Emmanuel R. Hodges, Fakhri Mahdi

Faculty and Student Publications

Cardiovascular disorder (CVD) is a common comorbidity in people living with HIV (PLWH). Although the underlying mechanisms are unknown, virotoxic HIV proteins, such as the trans-activator of transcription (Tat), likely contribute to CVD pathogenesis. Tat expression in mouse myocardium has been found to induce cardiac dysfunction and increase markers of endothelial toxicity. However, the role that Tat may play in the development of CVD pathogenesis is unclear. The capacity for Tat to impact cardiac function was assessed using AC16 human cardiomyocyte cells and adult male and female transgenic mice that conditionally expressed Tat [Tat(+)], or did not [Tat(−)]. In AC16 …
