Safe Zones In Hip-Implant Designs To Resist Dislocation, Himanshu Bhatt, Tarun Goswami Oct 2022

Safe Zones In Hip-Implant Designs To Resist Dislocation, Himanshu Bhatt, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

Major contributing parameters to hip implant dislocation include preoperative, intra-operative and post-operative factors. Implant geometry are design as well as non-design related. Femoral and acetabular component design features causing dislocation and/or resisting it are elucidated. Twelve implants were designed during this investigation were analyzed for dislocation resistance. A safe zone, establishes combinations of implant dimensions, was analyzed for all the 12 implants where implants were dislocation resistant. Head diameters between 26 mm to 32 mm, neck diameters closer to 14 mm, and neck angle between 25 to 35º were examined to be the safest ranges for hip implant designs.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is an ester between caffeic and quinic acid. It is found in many foods and reacts with free amino groups in proteins at alkaline pH, leading to the formation of an undesirable green pigment in sunflower seed-derived ingredients. This paper presents the biochemical characterization and application of a highly active chlorogenic acid esterase from Lactobacillus helveticus. The enzyme is one of the most active CGA esterases known to date with a Km of 0.090 mM and a kcat of 82.1 s−1. The CGA esterase is easily expressed recombinantly in E. coli in …

One-Pot Synthesis Of N-Rich Porous Carbon For Efficient Co2 Adsorption Performance, Qiyun Yu, Jiali Bai, Muslum Demir, Bilge N. Altay, Xin Hu, Linlin Wang

Articles

N-enriched porous carbons have played an important part in CO2 adsorption application thanks to their abundant porosity, high stability and tailorable surface properties while still suffering from a non-efficient and high-cost synthesis method. Herein, a series of N-doped porous carbons were prepared by a facile one-pot KOH activating strategy from commercial urea formaldehyde resin (UF). The textural properties and nitrogen content of the N-doped carbons were carefully controlled by the activating temperature and KOH/UF mass ratios. As-prepared N-doped carbons show 3D block-shaped morphology, the BET surface area of up to 980 m2/g together with a pore volume of 0.52 cm3/g …

On The Market For "Lemons": When Low Quality Does Not Drive High Quality Out Of The Market, Konstantinos Giannakas, Murray E. Fulton

Cornhusker Economics

In a research article published in Nature's Humanities and Social Sciences Communications (available at https://www.nature.com/articles/s4l 599-020-00658-w) we identify the conditions under which the introduction of a low -quality product does not drive its high-quality counterpart out of the market but, instead, ends-up coexisting with it. Using a theoretical framework of heterogeneous consumers and producers in the context of a market for quality- ( or vertically-) differentiated products supplied by producers differing in their production efficiency, we show that the equilibrium quality configuration in a market depends on both the unobservability of product quality by consumers and the relative costs …

Improving Wireless Networking From The Learning And Security Perspectives, Zhe Qu Oct 2022

Improving Wireless Networking From The Learning And Security Perspectives, Zhe Qu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Due to the high development of wireless networking and artificial intelligence, most of the data are generated from mobile devices, which distribute in different environments. As such, how to improve the performance of machine learning-based networking and its security should be carefully considered. To reduce the communication burden and protect private information from users, Federated Learning (FL) is a possible solution for learning-based wireless networking. Although FL achieves much success until now, it also remains some specific issues to be solved. In this dissertation, we propose two FL wireless networking frameworks and discuss two potential security issues.

In the FL …

Connecting Phenotype To Genotype: Phewas-Inspired Analysis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, John Matta, Daniel Dobrino, Dacosta Yeboah, Swade Howard, Yasser El-Manzalawy, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is extremely heterogeneous clinically and genetically. There is a pressing need for a better understanding of the heterogeneity of ASD based on scientifically rigorous approaches centered on systematic evaluation of the clinical and research utility of both phenotype and genotype markers. This paper presents a holistic PheWAS-inspired method to identify meaningful associations between ASD phenotypes and genotypes. We generate two types of phenotype-phenotype (p-p) graphs: a direct graph that utilizes only phenotype data, and an indirect graph that incorporates genotype as well as phenotype data. We introduce a novel methodology for fusing the direct and indirect …

Will Mediation Return To In-Person Only Or Will The Future Hold For An Option Of Zoom Mediation?, Sydney Grant Oct 2022

Will Mediation Return To In-Person Only Or Will The Future Hold For An Option Of Zoom Mediation?, Sydney Grant

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) Blog

March 2020 rapidly changed the way the legal world operated. Before the pandemic, 100% of mediations were conducted in-person. However, due to health concerns, the ADR community had to quickly come up with a solution on how to continue conducting mediations in a safe, efficient, and effective manner. Questions arose about whether virtual mediations would be as effective as in-person ones and if the mediator would be able to establish the same rapport with the parties as they were able to in-person.

This post was originally published on the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution website on October 12, 2022. The …

How Hearing Parents With Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing Children Construct Deafness Through Their Early Intervention Experience, Bettie T. Petersen

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This dissertation explores how hearing parents with deaf/hard of hearing children come to understand deafness. This mixed methods study used an online survey and multiple case studies (volunteers from survey). Participants were asked about early intervention experiences and beliefs about deafness. The survey had 74 respondents and five families participated in the interviews. Survey participants’ beliefs about deafness were primarily medical, focusing on the perceived barriers caused by deafness and the remediation of those barriers through spoken language options. A small number of respondents adopted a cultural perspective of deafness and focused on remediation of barriers through involvement in the …

Alu Dimorphism At The Pv92 Locus Of Chromosome 16 Is In Equilibrium For University Student Population, James M. Brooks, Mackenzie L. Thackston

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Alu is a retrotransposable element, which refers to its ability to be copied and move from one region of DNA to another DNA region. At the PV92 locus of chromosome 16, Alu is a 300 bp dimorphic insert that can either be present or absent. It does not encode a protein product and has lost the ability to transpose. It is specific to humans, and differences in genotype and allele frequencies between human populations are important tools in understanding evolution. In this research, data was obtained and analyzed from 269 students at Charleston Southern University (CSU) belonging to four different …

Environmental Bacteriophage Detection On Coastal Carolina University Campus, Madison Gentilo, Hailey Oldfield, Gavin Ockert, Paul E. Richardson

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria. These viruses are found ubiquitously in the environment and are more abundant than any living organism on Earth, including bacteria. Eleven sites are designated for weekly sample collection on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. Water samples are filtered and amplified using strains of E. coli B and E. coli K12 to allow potential coliphages in the sample to proliferate to detectable levels. Plaque assays are used as a microbial screen for the presence of bacteriophage. Samples that test positively using the microbial test are analyzed through a molecular test using PCR to identify …

Salt Marsh Plant Community Structure On Horse Island, South Carolina, Mackenzie L. Jenkins, Jennifer L. Schafer

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Sea level rise is causing an increase in salt water encroachment and flooding in many coastal habitats, and increasing salinity can have negative impacts on plant communities. The objective of our research was to determine the impact of salinity on salt marsh plant community structure on Horse Island, South Carolina. We investigated variation in plant cover and height with distance from a tidal creek and the effect of increasing salinity on seedling emergence from the seed bank. We established three transects in the salt marsh habitat and recorded plant species presence, percent cover of each species, and height of the …

Protecting Against Adversity: The Role Of Positive Childhood Experiences In Youth Recidivism, Melissa Kowalski, Zachary Hamilton, Alex Kigerl, Michael T. Baglivio, Kevin T. Wolff

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

An abundance of research has established Adverse Childhood Experiences’ (ACEs’) contributions to deviant behavior. Recently, studies have demonstrated the importance of Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs). Yet, the PCE establishment as a predictive scale is needed. In a multistate, robust sample (N = 254,874) of justice-involved youth, we examined PCE scale effects and ACE-PCE combinations on recidivism using mixed effects logistic regression while adjusting for the impact of state. Presence of PCEs was associated with lower reoffending likelihood, and ACEs were related to increased recidivism odds. Further, PCEs demonstrated a protective impact on ACEs. A ceiling effect on the ACE-PCE composite …
