Ethical Hiv Research With Transgender And Non-Binary Communities In The United States, Augustus Klien, Sarit Golub Oct 2022

Ethical Hiv Research With Transgender And Non-Binary Communities In The United States, Augustus Klien, Sarit Golub

Publications and Research

Introduction: Because transgender individuals experience disproportionately high rates of HIV infection, this population is an increasing focus of epidemiological and implementation science research to combat the epidemic. However, study participants, providers and other advocates have become increasingly concerned about research practices that may alienate, objectify, exploit or even re-traumatize the communities they are designed to benefit. This commentary explores the common pitfalls of HIV research with transgender communities and provides a potential framework for ethical, community-engaged research practice.

Discussion: We review some of the critical challenges to HIV research with transgender and non-binary communities that limit the potential for such …

Predictors Of Preschool Language Environments And Their Relations To Children's Vocabulary, Robert Duncan, Kirsten L. Anderson, Yemimah A. King, Jennifer Finders, Sara A. Schmitt, David J. Purpura

Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications

Despite support for the importance of early language environments, little is known about the naturally occurring experiences children have in preschool settings. The current study sample included 91 children (Mage = 4.72 years; 56% male; 67% White) from 23 preschool classrooms and nearly 1500 h of language environment data from three waves throughout the preschool year. Of the sociodemographic characteristics, family income is most closely related to children's preschool language environments. A standard deviation increase in family income was related to children hearing approximately one million more adult words in their preschool classroom. However, conversational turns were the …

Feasibility Study For Statcom’S Capacitor Selection For Voltage Sag Mitigation, Elham M. Tantawy, Ebrahim A. Badran, Mansour H. Abdel-Rahman Oct 2022

Feasibility Study For Statcom’S Capacitor Selection For Voltage Sag Mitigation, Elham M. Tantawy, Ebrahim A. Badran, Mansour H. Abdel-Rahman

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Voltage sags are the most common disturbances associated with power quality. They are caused by short circuits, starting large machines, or energizing a transformer. The main existing technologies for mitigating voltage sag are briefly illustrated. Static Compensators (STATCOM) and dynamic voltage resistors (DVR) are good economic solutions to mitigate voltage sags based on their capabilities. Mitigating devices affect the power flow and voltage profile conditions at both, utility equipment and customers. The impact is on the system voltage profile and on system losses. Using PASCAD/EMTDC, different ratings concerning the capacitor of STATCOM used have been considered and applied to the …

Mindfulness-Based Interventions For Survivors Of Lung Cancer And Their Partners: A Systematic Review, Karen Kane Mcdonnell, Otis L. Owens, Fattona Umari

Faculty Publications

Background

Survivors of lung cancer and their partners often have complex unresolved physical, psychosocial, and behavioral needs that can negatively affect the survivors’ and partners’ well-being. This systematic review aimed to (1) examine the content and delivery of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) and (2) summarize and synthesize the current evidence for effectiveness of MBIs targeting survivors of lung cancer and/or one selected partner (dyads).

Method

Six databases were searched for interventional studies published in English between 1980 and June 2020 using three terms (lung neoplasms, mindfulness, caregivers). For outcome measures, the interventions focused on behavioral change (meditation, yoga, stretching, breathing), symptom …

Pacific Faculty Work

The segmentation of medical and dental images is a fundamental step in automated clinical decision support systems. It supports the entire clinical workflow from diagnosis, therapy planning, intervention, and follow-up. In this paper, we propose a novel tool to accurately process a full-face segmentation in about 5 minutes that would otherwise require an average of 7h of manual work by experienced clinicians. This work focuses on the integration of the state-of-the-art UNEt TRansformers (UNETR) of the Medical Open Network for Artificial Intelligence (MONAI) framework. We trained and tested our models using 618 de-identified Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) volumetric images of …

Sports Coaches’ Depression Literacy, And Engagement In Prevention And Early Intervention Behaviors: A Moderated Mediation Analysis, Cliona O’Leary, Brendan Rooney, Bradley Donohue, James Matthews

Psychology Faculty Research

Coaches’ mental health literacy is associated with increased engagement in prevention and early intervention behaviors. However, few studies have explored the factors that may influence these relationships. The purpose of this study was to explore whether role breadth and role efficacy mediate the relationship between coach depression literacy and prevention and early intervention, and to assess whether gender or stigma moderates any mediation effects. One thousand and forty five coaches (M ¼ 42.71 years old; SD¼ 11.52; 30% female) completed an online survey exploring depression literacy, personal stigma, role breadth and efficacy and engagement in prevention and early intervention. Path …

Transient Nonlinear Vibration Characterization Of Building Materials In Sequential Impact Scale Experiments, James Bittner, John S. Popovics Oct 2022

Transient Nonlinear Vibration Characterization Of Building Materials In Sequential Impact Scale Experiments, James Bittner, John S. Popovics

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Characterizing standard building materials such as concrete is challenging primarily because of the broad range of constituent component sizes within the material itself. Concrete, the most ubiquitous building material, contains critical components that span at least three orders of magnitude of physical size. This work introduces a nondestructive sequential impact test to extract transient nonlinear vibration behaviors that provide statistically significant holistic characterization of a heterogeneous building material, neat cement paste, on a centimeter scale sample. The sensitivity of the single impact vibration combined with the repeatability of the new sequential apparatus enables the extraction of statistically distinct transient nonlinear …

Understanding Self-Compassion Within Narrative Identity: The Struggles Of Japanese Students With Measuring Up, Anton Sevilla-Liu Oct 2022

Understanding Self-Compassion Within Narrative Identity: The Struggles Of Japanese Students With Measuring Up, Anton Sevilla-Liu

The Qualitative Report

The psychology of self-compassion is growing in importance for understanding well-being and helping people in therapeutic and educational settings. However, present research may be limited by a narrow focus on nomothetic self-reports like the Self-Compassion Scale. This article supplements that qualitatively, looking at self-compassion in life stories. It is guided by the questions, “How do students experience the struggle between self-compassion and its deficit? And how is this experience manifest in their narrative identity?” This study examined three Japanese university students who submitted their narrative self-reflections, including stories of the high point, low point, turning point, and recurring pattern in …

Background: Detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antigens in blood has high sensitivity in adults with acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but sensitivity in pediatric patients is unclear. Recent data suggest that persistent SARS-CoV-2 spike antigenemia may contribute to multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). We quantified SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) and spike (S) antigens in blood of pediatric patients with either acute COVID-19 or MIS-C using ultrasensitive immunoassays (Meso Scale Discovery).

Methods: Plasma was collected from inpatients (< 21 years) enrolled across 15 hospitals in 15 US states. Acute COVID-19 patients (n = 36) had a range of disease severity and positive nasopharyngeal SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR within 24 hours of blood collection. Patients with MIS-C (n = 53) met CDC criteria and tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (RT-PCR or serology). Controls were patients pre-COVID-19 (n = 67) or within 24 hours of negative RT-PCR (n = 43).

Results: Specificities of N and S assays were 95-97% and 100%, respectively. In acute COVID-19 patients, N/S plasma assays …

INTRODUCTION: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) can be associated with a relatively dense immune infiltration. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (anti-PD1, anti-PDL1, and anti-CTLA4) are effective in 20% of UPS patients. We characterize the immune microenvironment of UPS and its association with oncologic outcomes.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Surgically resected UPS samples were stained by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for the following: tumor-associated immune cells (CD3, CD8, CD163, CD20), immune checkpoints (stimulatory: OX40, ICOS; inhibitory: PD-L1, LAG3, IDO1, PD1), and the adenosine pathway (CD73, CD39). Sections were reviewed for the presence of lymphoid aggregates (LA). Clinical data were retrospectively obtained for all samples. The Wilcoxon rank-sum …

Relative Importance Of Applicant Characteristics In Ophthalmology Residency Interview Selection: A Survey Of Program Directors, Samuel A. Cohen, Suzann Pershing Oct 2022

Relative Importance Of Applicant Characteristics In Ophthalmology Residency Interview Selection: A Survey Of Program Directors, Samuel A. Cohen, Suzann Pershing

Journal of Academic Ophthalmology

Abstract

Introduction Ophthalmology residency positions remain competitive. A lack of clarity regarding which residency selection criteria are prioritized by program directors can heighten the stress associated with the match process. While surveys of program directors in several other medical specialties have been conducted to identify the most important residency selection criteria, there is limited data on selection criteria used by ophthalmology residency program directors. The purpose of our study was to survey ophthalmology residency program directors to identify the current state of interview selection decisions—the factors currently considered most important in determining whether to extend an interview invitation to residency …

Toolkit For Screening Older Adults Desiring To Age In Place In Independent Living, Sister Raymond Marie Labonte

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The world is experiencing an increase in the aged population. This increase stimulated the popular theme of aging in place. Much time, effort and research have been channeled into exploring this model as an alternative to assisted living or skilled nursing settings for senior citizens worldwide. Elders desire to age in place. Current, recent, and decades old literature identifies this preferential option of the elderly and supports the need to develop plans and tools to assist elders to be able to successfully age in place. This quality assurance project is the venture to create both a congregate living community and …

Implementation Of Nurse Navigators For Behavioral Health, Theresa Papagna Oct 2022

Implementation Of Nurse Navigators For Behavioral Health, Theresa Papagna

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Mental health patients have been notoriously non-adherent with diligent medication conformity, office visit fidelity, candor about side effects, use of illegal substances for self-medication, and truthfulness about co-occurring conditions. This non-adherence makes treatment difficult for psychiatric providers, and all those who participate in the care of patients with mental illness. Patient non-adherence can cause frustration and can lead to provider burnout, which affects patients as well as providers. Also, there are concerning financial implications of excessive time and resources needed to adequately monitor mental health patients. Implications regarding 30- day re-admissions are tantamount to consideration of financial strains put on …
