Licensing Considerations For Your Oer: An Argument For Virality, Jonathan Poritz Oct 2022

Licensing Considerations For Your Oer: An Argument For Virality, Jonathan Poritz

OER & Beyond - Blog Archive

It was my great pleasure to participate in planning the 10th anniversary celebration of the Open Education Network‘s Open Textbook Library [OTL] in the spring of 2022. Since I tend to think of the OTL as one of the main, canonical OER repositories, it was fun to make graphs with some of its publicly available data, as they are, to me, an almost canonical snapshot of the OER world as it exists now.

Complex Adaptive Systems In A Contentious World, Yasmin Merali Oct 2022

Complex Adaptive Systems In A Contentious World, Yasmin Merali

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article is about developing and implementing interventions that are systemically viable in a world that is constantly evolving. Geopolitical and economic forces, environmental stressors, and the weaponization of information confront us with an unprecedented level of complexity, requiring new ways of seeing and being when intervening in conflictual situations. I draw on the Complex Adaptive Systems paradigm to explore how world order emerges from the dynamics of network relationships between the players in the cyber-social landscape. This treatment elaborates on mechanisms underpinning resilience, adaptation, and transformation of socioeconomic systems in turbulent contexts. It emphasizes a need to reconsider conventional …

What Motivates Barrier-Crossing Leadership?, Michael D. Buhrmester, Michael A. Cowan, Harvey Whitehouse Oct 2022

What Motivates Barrier-Crossing Leadership?, Michael D. Buhrmester, Michael A. Cowan, Harvey Whitehouse

New England Journal of Public Policy

From large-scale wars, natural disasters, and pandemics to community-level religious and ethnic conflicts, many leaders wield power during crises by championing their group’s goals against those of rivals. But there is also a rarer breed of leader—barrier-crossers who pursue group interests by recognizing rivals’ interests and working with them to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. Though such leaders have played vital roles in resolving conflicts, little is known about their extraordinary motivation. Here we report survey results contrasting barrier-crossing with barrier-bound leaders from seven communities. In line with new theories from group psychology and anthropology, we found that barrier-crossers uniquely reported …

Cultural Work In Peacebuilding Among Traumatized Communities Of Northern Ireland 2: Talking About Culture, Eugen Koh Oct 2022

Cultural Work In Peacebuilding Among Traumatized Communities Of Northern Ireland 2: Talking About Culture, Eugen Koh

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article is the second of two that describe a psychodynamically informed understanding of the sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland and an approach to cultural transformation called “cultural work” aimed at building peace among the state’s traumatized communities. The conflict between Protestant and Catholic communities has extended well into the cultural domain and is often weaponized to attack the Other. Conversations about culture quickly become stuck in a quagmire of identity politics. This article describes a psychodynamic trauma–informed approach to cultural conversations involving an in-depth analysis of culture that avoids becoming stuck. It outlines a framework and set of preconditions …

A Latitudinal Signal In The Relationship Between Species Geographic Range Size And Climatic Niche Area, Tad Dallas, Andrew Kramer Oct 2022

A Latitudinal Signal In The Relationship Between Species Geographic Range Size And Climatic Niche Area, Tad Dallas, Andrew Kramer

Faculty Publications

Species with broader niches may have the opportunity to occupy larger geographic areas, assuming no limitations on dispersal and a relatively homogeneous environmental space. Here, we use data on a large set of mammal (n = 1225), bird (n = 1829) and tree (n = 341) species to examine the 1) relationship between geographic range size and climatic niche area, 2) influence of species traits on species departures from this relationship and 3) sensitivity of these relationships to how species range size and climatic niche area are estimated. We find positive geographic range size–climatic niche area relationships for all taxa, …

Household Salt Production By The Late Classic Maya: Underwater Excavations At Ta'ab Nuk Na, Heather Mckillop, E. Cory Sills Oct 2022

Household Salt Production By The Late Classic Maya: Underwater Excavations At Ta'ab Nuk Na, Heather Mckillop, E. Cory Sills

Faculty Publications

Salt is an essential commodity; archaeological remains around the world attest to the importance of its production, exchange and consumption. Often located in coastal locations, many production sites were submerged by rising seas, including the Paynes Creek Salt Works on the southern Belize coast. Survey and excavation of these sites has identified 'kitchens' for brine boiling, as well as Terminal Classic residential structures at Ek Way Nal. The authors report the discovery of an earlier residential building alongside salt kitchens at the nearby site of Ta'ab Nuk Na. This finding indicates that surplus household production began during the Late Classic, …

Poster Session: "I Know They Are Very Popular, But They Still Have Issues." Student Ebook Preferences & Covid-19, Mallory Jallas, Jennifer Schwartz, Grace Ansani, Katierose Mceneely

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

COVID-19 impacted access to collections at all libraries, and the urgency of patron needs precluded the ability to ask our users about their opinions and preferences. In response to the pandemic, some libraries initiated an eBook-preferred model, some invested in e-textbooks, and others maintained the status quo for collection strategies. As part of CARLI Counts, four librarians at various institutions investigated the attitudes and preferences of students at their campuses by surveying them about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their experiences with eBooks. This poster will share the findings from the survey and describe its implications for different …

Patching Procedural Potholes In Supplemental Jurisdiction Claims Involving Ada & Unruh Act Litigation In California Federal Courts, Julian Schoen

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Since California enacted heighted pleading standards for high-frequency litigants alleging violations of the Unruh Act in state court, California federal courts experienced a significant surge of ADA and Unruh Act claims. This Note explores the reasons for this surge and proposes simple fixes to reduce federal courts’ caseloads while ensuring plaintiffs’ ability to defend their civil rights.

Wise Practices: Indigenous-Settler Relations In Laurentian Great Lakes Fishery Governance And Water Protection, Kate J. Mussett, Susan Bell Chiblow, Deborah Mcgregor, Rod Whitlow, Ryan Lauzon, Kaitlin Almack, Nicholas Boucher, Alexander T. Duncan, Andrea J. Reid

Articles & Book Chapters

Ongoing tensions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities working in support of the protection and management of fish and water in North America have necessitated a shift from current structures towards relationships built upon and driven by respect, relevance, reciprocity, and responsibility. Similarly, the cumulative and evolving effects of climate change, industrialization, resource extraction, and displacement of Indigenous Peoples from their traditional and contemporary lands and waters requires purposeful application of decolonizing methods in aquatic systems management and protection, which in turn aids in the re-establishment of agency to Indigenous Peoples. This article endeavors to outline critical differences in ‘best …

Cultural Work In Peacebuilding Among Traumatized Communities Of Northern Ireland 1: Background And General Considerations, Eugen Koh

New England Journal of Public Policy

Peace in Northern Ireland today remains fragile despite the exhaustive peacebuilding efforts that have taken place since the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Many aspects of the sectarian conflict have been embedded in cultural substrata of the respective communities, and cultural transformation is necessary to achieve comprehensive and sustained peace. The basic assumptions about the Other in this sectarian conflict have their origin in traumatic events that occurred more than three hundred years ago and have been reinforced by the more recent three decades of conflict known as the Troubles. These traumatic individual and collective experiences across the generations have …

Assembly Line Americans: Labor, Language, And Literacy At Ford Motors, Vincent Portillo Oct 2022

Assembly Line Americans: Labor, Language, And Literacy At Ford Motors, Vincent Portillo

Dissertations - ALL

Assembly Line Americans: Labor, Language, and Literacy at Ford Motors explores the significance of Henry Ford’s and Ford Motor’s industrial education project, which impacted the working-class life and educational development of migrants and US citizens alike. Ford’s industrial education project emerged in its Highland Park, Michigan plant where Ford produced Model T’s and in 1914 founded the Ford English School (FES). The FES engaged an Americanization curriculum as a way of preparing a largely migrant workforce for labor on the assembly line and to apply for US citizenship in the name of developing an industrial class of labor. I begin …

The Prosecutor In The Mirror: Conviction Integrity Units And Brady Claims, Lissa Griffin, Daisy Mason Oct 2022

The Prosecutor In The Mirror: Conviction Integrity Units And Brady Claims, Lissa Griffin, Daisy Mason

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In Brady v. Maryland, the Supreme Court held that a prosecutor has a due process obligation to disclose exculpatory evidence that is material to guilt or punishment. The failure to fulfill this duty is particularly insidious because it bears directly on both whether an innocent defendant may have been convicted as well as on whether the adjudicatory process was fair. The failure to disclose exculpatory evidence has been characterized as “epidemic” and has been documented to have made a major, outsized contribution in cases that resulted in exonerations. It is not surprising, then, that conviction integrity units in prosecutor’s …

The Data Privacy Compromise: Reconciling State And Federal Regulatory Regimes On The Path To Preemption, Mi T. Tran Oct 2022

The Data Privacy Compromise: Reconciling State And Federal Regulatory Regimes On The Path To Preemption, Mi T. Tran

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Today, it is easier than ever before for business entities to collect and sell our data, and most consumers lack comprehensive knowledge of how they can protect their data or recognize the true extent of potential exposure. Although data privacy regulation is gearing up among U.S. states, federal legislators have been stagnant in regard to passing a federal data privacy law. Without clearer, broader protections for consumers, many will be left to deal with overlapping laws and confusing procedures for pursuing legal remedies.

The relationship between federal and state regulation is best maintained when Congress carefully balances the different roles …
