Media Multitasking And Sustained Attention: An Experimental Investigation, Ryan Nix Oct 2022

Media Multitasking And Sustained Attention: An Experimental Investigation, Ryan Nix

Student Theses and Dissertations

Research exploring the cognitive effects of media multitasking show a lack of convergent findings among studies that utilize the Media Multitasking Index (MMI) and behavioral measures of sustained attention. All these studies approached media multitasking as a linear construct with solely cumulative effects. To investigate the possibility that media multitasking may have immediate, direct effects on sustained attention, a laboratory media multitasking simulation was implemented alongside the MMI and the Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART). Eighty-one participants completed all measures; half experienced the media multitasking simulation. It was predicted that experimental participants would exhibit more post-simulation SART NOGO errors …

The Influence Of Media Exposure And Colorism On The African American Community, Terrence Davis Oct 2022

The Influence Of Media Exposure And Colorism On The African American Community, Terrence Davis

Student Theses and Dissertations

Research investigating the media perception of African American has found a conflicting relationship between the variables of media exposure, self-esteem, and colorism. The present study sought to investigate the possible mediation effect of colorism on the relationship between exposure to Black media and self-esteem. Participants were presented with images that depicted Black people in current media and answered the four question that appeared beneath. Participants then completed a colorism and self-esteem questionnaires. It was predicted that the total relationship of exposure to Black media and self-esteem will be partially mediated by colorism. Higher levels of media exposure will be associated …

Effects Of Cannabinoids On Ligand-Gated Ion Channels, Murat Oz, Keun-Hang Susan Yang, Mohamed Omer Mahgoub Oct 2022

Effects Of Cannabinoids On Ligand-Gated Ion Channels, Murat Oz, Keun-Hang Susan Yang, Mohamed Omer Mahgoub

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Phytocannabinoids such as Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol, endocannabinoids such as N-arachidonoylethanolamine (anandamide) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, and synthetic cannabinoids such as CP47,497 and JWH-018 constitute major groups of structurally diverse cannabinoids. Along with these cannabinoids, CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors and enzymes involved in synthesis and degradation of endocannabinoids comprise the major components of the cannabinoid system. Although, cannabinoid receptors are known to be involved in anti-convulsant, anti-nociceptive, anti-psychotic, anti-emetic, and anti-oxidant effects of cannabinoids, in recent years, an increasing number of studies suggest that, at pharmacologically relevant concentrations, these compounds interact with several molecular targets including G-protein coupled receptors, ion …

Different Maternal Responses And Cognitions In Hypothetical Power Bouts: Relations To Parenting Styles, Kathy L. Ritchie Oct 2022

Different Maternal Responses And Cognitions In Hypothetical Power Bouts: Relations To Parenting Styles, Kathy L. Ritchie

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

In order to explore how parental styles and maternal cognitions interacted with difficult extended discipline episodes called power bouts, 88 mothers were categorized as either Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive, or Uninvolved. Mothers then read six hypothetical vignettes about a 4-year-old child misbehaving and were asked how they would respond to the child and how they would respond a second time if the child did not behave. These open-ended responses were coded on a scale of increasing power assertiveness with 0 being giving in and 5 indicating using punishment through spanking, removal of privilege, or time out. Using Bell and Chapman’s (1986) …

The Youth Inferno: Two-Way Working On Ancestral Lands, Pamela Nathan Oct 2022

The Youth Inferno: Two-Way Working On Ancestral Lands, Pamela Nathan

New England Journal of Public Policy

In this article I present some of the work of Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment (CASSE) in Central Australia, Northern Territory, with the youth in the justice system, referring to our dual cultural and therapeutic program Shields for Living, Tools for Life. Psychoanalytic concepts and tools that have informed the work and transformed the trauma landscape are detailed. The work is at the epicenter of anger, concern, and politics in Central Australia and this epicenter has been named the “youth crisis.” It is a journey of feeling the heat, of being on a rollercoaster ride in a landscape of …
