Motoneuron Excitability Dysfunction In Als: Pseudo-Mystery Or Authentic Conundrum?, Sherif M. Elbasiouny Oct 2022

Motoneuron Excitability Dysfunction In Als: Pseudo-Mystery Or Authentic Conundrum?, Sherif M. Elbasiouny

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), abnormalities in motoneuronal excitability are seen in early pathogenesis and throughout disease progression. Fully understanding motoneuron excitability dysfunction may lead to more effective treatments. Yet decades of research have not produced consensus on the nature, role or underlying mechanisms of motoneuron excitability dysfunction in ALS. For example, contrary to Ca excitotoxicity theory, predictions of motoneuronal hyper-excitability, normal and hypo-excitability have also been seen at various disease stages and in multiple ALS lines. Accordingly, motoneuron excitability dysfunction in ALS is a disputed topic in the field. Specifically, the form (hyper, hypo or unchanged) and what role …

Radiation Exposure Determination In A Secure, Cloud-Based Online Environment, Ben C. Shirley, Eliseos J. Mucaki, Peter Rogan Oct 2022

Radiation Exposure Determination In A Secure, Cloud-Based Online Environment, Ben C. Shirley, Eliseos J. Mucaki, Peter Rogan

Biochemistry Publications

Rapid sample processing and interpretation of estimated exposures will be critical for triaging exposed individuals after a major radiation incident. The dicentric chromosome (DC) assay assesses absorbed radiation using metaphase cells from blood. The Automated Dicentric Chromosome Identifier and Dose Estimator System (ADCI) identifies DCs and determines radiation doses. This study aimed to broaden accessibility and speed of this system, while protecting data and software integrity. ADCI Online is a secure web-streaming platform accessible worldwide from local servers. Cloud-based systems containing data and software are separated until they are linked for radiation exposure estimation. Dose estimates are identical to ADCI …

Associations Between Faculty Vitality And Burnout In The Covid-19 Era: The Experience Of One Institution, Megan Ferriby Ferber, Tina H. Chen, Patrice L. Vallot, Jane Mchowat, Cindy C. Bitter Oct 2022

Associations Between Faculty Vitality And Burnout In The Covid-19 Era: The Experience Of One Institution, Megan Ferriby Ferber, Tina H. Chen, Patrice L. Vallot, Jane Mchowat, Cindy C. Bitter

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Faculty vitality is the ideal synergy between engaged faculty and mission-driven institutions that generates a fruitful environment for academic productivity, career satisfaction, and fulfillment of shared goals. The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced unprecedented disruptions to faculty vitality, with profound perturbations to individual and institutional support networks. However, the extent of this impact is unclear, as are strategies to mitigate loss of faculty vitality and prevent burnout.

Methods: We developed a survey instrument to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on faculty vitality and burnout at a mid-sized, Midwestern academic institution affiliated with a university hospital. Survey items focused on individual …

Investigation Of Polymer Nanocomposites With Silicon Dioxide Fillers As Helium Cooled High-Temperature Superconducting Cable Dielectrics, Jordan Thomas Cook Oct 2022

Investigation Of Polymer Nanocomposites With Silicon Dioxide Fillers As Helium Cooled High-Temperature Superconducting Cable Dielectrics, Jordan Thomas Cook

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, three polymer nanocomposite configurations are fabricated for investigation as dielectrics in helium-cooled high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables. Polyimide, polyamide, and polymethyl methacrylate are utilized as host polymers. The composite samples are synthesized through an in situ process, dispersing silicon dioxide nanoparticles throughout the polymer hosts. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed to validate the synthesis of each composite configuration. Thin film samples of each configuration were also tested for their dielectric strength at both room (300 K) and cryogenic (92 K) temperatures. When going from room to cryogenic temperatures, all materials demonstrated a significant …

Driving The Southern Nevada Health Economy Forward: Benefits Of A Transformational Unlv Academic Health Center, Tripp Umbach

Policy Briefs and Reports

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) plans to develop an integrated academic health center within the Las Vegas Medical District (LVMD). The academic health center includes UNLV’s five health science schools and mental and behavioral health, which is distributed among several colleges (medicine, liberal arts, urban affairs, and education) in the university. University Medical Center (UMC), a major teaching hospital, will also be an important driver of the academic health center. For the purposes of this report, UNLV’s medical and health science entities along with UMC are referred to collectively as the UNLV Academic Health Center. Additional academic health …

The New Nil Market May Decrease Overseas Professional Basketball Recruitment Of United States Talent, Diego Colonna Oct 2022

The New Nil Market May Decrease Overseas Professional Basketball Recruitment Of United States Talent, Diego Colonna

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog

At only nineteen years old, Cade Cunningham earned a $10.05 million salary to join the Detroit Pistons as the first overall pick in the 2021 National Baseball Association (the “NBA”) Draft. The remaining top ten picks also earned multi-million-dollar salaries at similarly young ages. With the potential to make millions in their early twenties, it is no wonder why thousands of high school-aged basketball players dream of playing in the NBA one day. In addition to the fierce competition and limited opportunities, there is one major hurdle that young players need to overcome to realize this dream: the NBA’s “one-and-done” …

Godsey, Mark S. Seyfried, Bruce Finney

Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory Data

The Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed (RCEW) and Critical Zone Observatory (CZO) is the site of over 60 years of research aimed at understanding water cycling in a semi-arid climate. Meteoric water lines (MWLs) are frequently used to interpret hydrologic processes necessitating the development of local meteoric water lines (LMWLs). At the RCEW-CZO, a RCEW LMWL and a groundwater recharge RCEW LMWL (RCEW LMWL - GWR) were developed with this dataset using orthogonal regression from primarily three different elevations (1203m, 1585m, 2043m). The RCEW LMWL (δ18O = 7.41 δ2H - 3.05) is different from the RCEW LMWL-GWR (δ18O = 8.21 δ2H …
