Salter ’03, Putting Legal Analysis Skills To Use As Ceo Of The News Literacy Project, James Owsley Boyd
Keep Up With the Latest News from the Law School (blog)
You can handle the truth. Or at least that’s what Chuck Salter and the News Literacy Project hope. In a world where fake news, disinformation, propaganda, and misinformation are more prevalent than ever, the 2003 Indiana Law alumnus and the nonprofit organization he leads are doing all they can to help citizens determine the credibility of news and other information they’re receiving.
“We’re based on the idea that information—we live in the most complex information landscape in human history—is also easily manipulated,” said Salter. “People are just not equipped to deal with this much information and to detect when they’re …

New York Times, Law Of War, And Congressional Overreach In U.S. Military Operations, Brian L. Cox
Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers
Recent high-profile reporting by the New York Times and other media organizations involving U.S. military combat operations has elevated public awareness related to Department of Defense targeting and accountability practices. While scandal generated by media coverage forms the basis for demands for reform of DoD practice from civil society groups and select members of Congress, the narratives developed in the investigative reporting have thus far not been exposed to comprehensive scrutiny. This article conducts a critical analysis of recent New York Times reporting involving U.S. military combat operations to assess the legitimacy of the narratives developed therein. After considering various …

The Relationship Between Instructional Staff Training Expenditures And Teacher Retention: Comparing Georgia Public Schools, Sunita Holloway
Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership Dissertations
The teacher shortage is a threat facing our nation as many school districts have difficulty filling vacancies with qualified, effective teachers. Research has shown that the greatest contributing factor to the teacher shortage is the considerable number of teachers exiting the profession preretirement (Becker & Grob, 2021; Geringer, 2003; Ingersoll, 2001; Shakrani, 2008; Sutcher et al., 2016). As a result, a vast amount of literature has focused on teacher retention, teacher turnover, and factors influencing teachers’ decisions to stay or leave. This quantitative research study contributed to the body of literature regarding teacher retention by considering a financial lens. Specifically, …

Otolith organs of the inner ear are innervated by two parallel afferent projections to the brainstem and cerebellum. These innervations were proposed to segregate across the line of polarity reversal (LPR) within each otolith organ, which divides the organ into two regions of hair cells (HC) with opposite stereociliary orientation. The relationship and functional significance of these anatomical features are not known. Here, we show regional expression of Emx2 in otolith organs, which establishes LPR, mediates the neuronal segregation across LPR and constitutes the bidirectional sensitivity function. Conditional knockout (cKO) of Emx2 in HCs lacks LPR. Tmie cKO, in which mechanotransduction …
Social Media Time Series Forecasting And User-Level Activity Prediction With Gradient Boosting, Deep Learning, And Data Augmentation, Fred Mubang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the overall history of technological innovations, social media has only existed for a brief time, however its influence is undeniable. Researchers have found that it can be used to influence elections, spread health misinformation, and aid with financial pump-and-dump schemes. Keeping all this in mind, it is clear that more research is needed to predict the spread of information on social media in order to combat its malicious use.
To that end, in this dissertation, we explore the use of Machine Learning algorithms to perform time series forecasting and user-level activity prediction in social media. We address the different …

Association Between Use Of Remdesivir And Bradycardia, Gibret Umeukeje
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Remdesivir received the first emergency use authorization from the FDA for the treatment of COVID-19. Multiple adverse drug reactions (ADR) have been reported since its approval in October 2020. Bradycardia, defined by a decrease in heart rate has been reported as an adverse event for patients receiving remdesivir for COVID-19 treatment. The purpose of the research is to systematically investigate the frequency of occurrence of bradycardia in adults receiving remdesivir using clinical data derived from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. Patients receiving remdesivir were compared to those receiving Paxlovid, Regen-Cov, and Dexamethasone for COVID-19 treatment to see …

“Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in. She saw two white-robed angels, one sitting at the head and the other at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying. “Dear woman, why are you crying?” the angels asked her. “Because they have taken away my Lord,” she replied, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him. “Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you …

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog
In recent years, New York City’s jail system has been in a state of constant crisis due to overcrowding, violence, and consistent sick outs from correction officers. When Mayor Eric Adams took office in January 2022, Department of Corrections commissioner Louis Molina said he was “unequivocally committed to transparency and restoring public trust in the agency.” The agency has been plagued by corruption and sixteen detainee deaths in 2021. As of September 27, 2022, sixteen people have died after being held in Riker’s Island, even as officials have rushed to implement reforms to stave off a looming June 2022 threat …

Leadership Of The Pioneers Of Nursing Informatics: A Multiple Care Study Analysis, Ann Z. Branchini
Dissertations
This multiple case study analysis examines the leadership of an elite group of nurses known as The Pioneers of Nursing Informatics. Leadership was examined using a lens of Complex Adaptive Systems theory as developed by Cilliers (1998) following Yin's (2009) methodology of Multiple Case Study analysis with cross-case synthesis. The research questions focused on why the pioneers were considered leaders, and how the conditions and context were associated with the emergence of the specialty and the associated activities and accomplishments of the pioneers. Study propositions focused on the emerging nature of the specialty of nursing informatics, elements of leadership, the …

Awe is a complex emotion theorised to impact science learning and practice. In science education, awe has the potential to motivate explanation-seeking, promote conceptual change, and instill feelings of connectedness to the natural world. This exploratory study examined teachers’ experiences with awe as well as their uses of awe in their science instruction. Thirty-four elementary (grades 4-5; n =14) and middle school (grades 6-7; n = 20) teachers completed a survey of awe perceptions and experiences and participated in a semi-structured interview. Results showed that science teachers report using awe-invoking classroom experiences in a variety of science disciplines with the …

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), the most common form of lymphoma, is typically treated with chemotherapy combined with the immunotherapy rituximab, an antibody targeting the B cell receptor, CD20. Despite the success of this treatment regimen, approximately a third of DLBCL patients experience either relapse or have refractory disease that is resistant to rituximab, indicating the need for alternative therapeutic strategies. Here, we identified that CD74 and IL4R are expressed on the cell surface of both CD20 positive and CD20 negative B cell populations. Moreover, genes encoding CD74 and IL4R are expressed in lymphoma biopsies isolated from all stages of …

Background: The Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) gave valuable indices of the nutritional status of Eucalyptus amended with sewage sludge (SS).
Aims: Our objective was to establish a DRIS norms and analytical method for Eucalyptus under SS application, by verifying in particular, the influence of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) on the nutritional and plant development.
Method: Data on mean annual increment, nutrient, and PTE concentration were obtained in an experiment at 22, 44, 54, and 76 months after planting Eucalyptus amended with SS.
Results: Our results indicated that DRIS can give valuable data on the nutritional balance indices, in …

Subtype B HIV-1 reservoirs have been intensively investigated, but reservoirs in other subtypes and how they respond to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is substantially less established. To characterize subtype C HIV-1 reservoirs, we implemented postmortem frozen, as well as formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue sampling of central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral tissues. HIV-1 LTR, gag, envelope (env) DNA and RNA was quantified using genomic DNA and RNA extracted from frozen tissues. RNAscope was used to localize subtype C HIV-1 DNA and RNA in FFPE tissue. Despite uniform viral load suppression in our cohort, PCR results showed that subtype C …

In R. v. Desautel, decided 23 April 2021, a majority of the Supreme Court of Canada held, for the first time, that an Indigenous community located in the United States, whose members are neither citizens nor residents of Canada, can have an existing Aboriginal right, protected by section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, to hunt in a specified area within Canada. This will be so, the Supreme Court majority held, where the community can show that it descends from (is a successor of) an Indigenous community that was present in what is now Canada at the time of the …

The Reintroduction Of The Consumer Bankruptcy Reform Act: Throwing Debtors A Lifeline, Zoe Zingale
The Reintroduction Of The Consumer Bankruptcy Reform Act: Throwing Debtors A Lifeline, Zoe Zingale
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog
In an ideal world, the United States consumer bankruptcy system provides a “fresh start” to individuals who find themselves in financial distress for reasons beyond their control while also stimulating the economy by allowing debtors the ability to engage in transactions. In reality, however, overly complex laws and procedures in the Bankruptcy Code prevent this system from functioning at its full potential. Moreover, current procedural complications too often lead to significant racially disparate outcomes that disadvantage people of color.
