Addressing The Need For Training More School Psychologists To Serve Toddlers And Preschoolers With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Therese L. Mathews, Edward J. Daly Iii, Gina M. Kunz, Ashley M. Lugo, Paige Mcardle, Katy Menousek, Kevin A. Kupzyk

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has risen significantly in the past two decades. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of mental health providers who have specialized training in delivering evidenced-based services to this population. Early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) is an evidenced-based treatment recommended for toddlers with ASD, and school psychologists are uniquely positioned to help children with ASD receive it. However, many school psychologists do not receive adequate training in this subspecialty. This paper makes recommendations to school psychology training programs about how to add or improve training in this subspecialty based on the results of an Office …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Aluminum and silicon are present in large quantities in the interstellar medium, making the triatomic species consisting of both elements intriguing with regard to the foundations of astrochemistry. Spectroscopic parameters have been calculated via high-level ab initio methods to assist with laboratory and observational detection of [Al, O, Si]x(x = 0,+1). All [Al, O, Si]Mx(x = 0,+1) isomers exist in the linear geometry, with linear AlOSi (X 2Π) and linear AlOSi+ (X1Δ) being the most stable neutral and cationic species, respectively. Formation of the neutral species most likely occurs via reaction of …

Subtype C Hiv-1 Reservoirs Throughout The Body In Art-Suppressed Individuals, Zhou Liu, Peter Julius, Guobin Kang, John T. West, Charles Wood

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Subtype B HIV-1 reservoirs have been intensively investigated, but reservoirs in other subtypes and how they respond to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is substantially less established. To characterize subtype C HIV-1 reservoirs, we implemented postmortem frozen, as well as formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue sampling of central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral tissues. HIV-1 LTR, gag, envelope (env) DNA and RNA was quantified using genomic DNA and RNA extracted from frozen tissues. RNAscope was used to localize subtype C HIV-1 DNA and RNA in FFPE tissue. Despite uniform viral load suppression in our cohort, PCR results …

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

We present early science results from Deep Investigation of Neutral Gas Origins (DINGO), an H I survey using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Using ASKAP subarrays available during its commissioning phase, DINGO early science data were taken over ∼60 deg2 of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) 23 h region with 35.5 h integration time. We make direct detections of six known and one new sources at z < 0.01. Using H I spectral stacking, we investigate the H I gas content of galaxies at 0.04 < z < 0.09 for different galaxy colours. The results show that galaxy morphology based on optical colour is strongly linked to H I gas properties. To examine environmental impacts on the H I gas content of galaxies, three subsamples are made based on the GAMA group catalogue. The average H I mass of group central galaxies is larger than those of satellite and isolated galaxies, but with a lower H I gas fraction. We derive a variety of H I scaling relations for physical properties of our sample, including stellar mass, stellar mass surface density, NUV − r colour, specific star formation rate, and halo mass. We find that the derived H I scaling relations are comparable to other published results, with consistent trends also observed to ∼0.5 dex lower limits in stellar mass and stellar surface density. The cosmic H I densities derived from our data are consistent with other published values at similar redshifts. DINGO early science highlights the power of H I spectral stacking techniques with ASKAP

Platform Work, Social Risks And Social Welfare : A Qualitative Study On Workers’ Experiences And Views In Hong Kong, Cham Kit Ming

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Drawing on the social risk thesis, this research studies the risk and welfare experiences of Hong Kong workers working on food delivery platforms and courier platforms. A total of 23 platform workers involved in food delivery work and courier work on the crowdsourcing gig work platform were invited to in-depth interviews, leading to the discovery of workers’ perceptions of the six platform work-related risks, welfare experiences, and work freedom. The researcher argues that platform workers’ experiences result from power asymmetry on the individual, organisational, and institutional levels. The algorithmic control by the platform firms and the dependence of workers on …

A Methodological And Clinical Approach To Measured Energy Expenditure In The Critically Ill Pediatric Patient., Jaime Silva-Gburek, Paola Hong Zhu, Marwa Mansour, David Walding, Jorge A. Coss-Bu

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

The metabolic response to injury and stress is characterized initially by a decreased energy expenditure (Ebb phase) followed by an increased metabolic expenditure (Flow phase). Indirect calorimetry is a methodology utilized to measure energy expenditure and substrate utilization by measuring gas exchange in exhaled air and urinary nitrogen. The use of indirect calorimetry in critically ill patients requires precise equipment to obtain accurate measurements. The most recent guidelines suggested that measured energy expenditure by indirect calorimetry be used to determine energy requirements. This article reviews the methodological and clinical use of indirect calorimetry in critically ill pediatric patients.

Autonomous Driving (AD) is considered as a testbed for tackling many hard AI problems. Despite the recent advancements in the field, AD is still far from achieving full autonomy due to core technical problems inherent in AD. The emerging field of neuro-symbolic AI and the methods for knowledge-infused learning are showing exciting ways of leveraging external knowledge within machine/deep learning solutions, with the potential benefits for interpretability, explainability, robustness, and transferability. In this tutorial, we will examine the use of knowledge-infused learning for three core state-of-the-art technical achievements within the AD domain. With a collaborative team from both academia and …

First Amendment Scholar Timothy Zick Dismantles Trump V. Cnn Lawsuit, Timothy Zick

Popular Media

Former President Donald Trump filed a $475 million defamation lawsuit against CNN arguing the network has maligned him with “fake news” for the purposes of damaging his political future heading into 2024.

The complaint filed Oct. 3 stated, “CNN has sought to use its massive influence – purportedly as a ‘trusted’ news source – to defame the Plaintiff in the minds of its viewers and readers for the purpose of defeating him politically, culminating in CNN claiming credit for ‘[getting] Trump out’ in the 2020 presidential election.”

First Amendment Watch asked First Amendment scholar Timothy Zick to annotate the 29-page …

Self-Regulation Of Time: The Importance Of Time Estimation Accuracy, Anna C. Brady, Christopher A. Wolters, Shirley L. Yu

Curriculum, Foundations & Reading: Faculty Publications

Time management is one central aspect of students’ self-regulated learning. In addition, biased time estimation seems to be central to students’ self-regulation of their time. In this study, we explored college students’ time estimation bias. In addition, we were interested in whether the activation of task beliefs influenced students’ time estimation bias and how specific beliefs about task difficulty influence time estimation bias. Findings suggested that students tended to demonstrate bias in their estimations of the time their academic tasks would take. Additionally, the activation of task beliefs did not influence students’ time estimation accuracy. Finally, both prior task difficulty …

The Law’S Apprehension Of Religion As A Legal Fiction, Blair Major Oct 2022

The Law’S Apprehension Of Religion As A Legal Fiction, Blair Major

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article addresses issues surrounding the way in which law apprehends religion in the judicial context. The first part of the article proposes the notion of legal fiction as a theoretical lens through which to view the law’s apprehension of religion. It is argued that this highlights and articulates a useful set of ideas about the social-symbolic process of the law’s interaction with religion. The second part of the article applies these theoretical ideas through an in-depth discussion of three cases: Ktunaxa Nation v. British Columbia, Multani v. Commission scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys, and Bentley v. Anglican Synod of the Diocese of …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

An accurate determination of the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to theanomalous magnetic moment of the muon is critical to understanding the size and significance of anydiscrepancy between the Standard Model prediction and experimental results being obtained by the Muong-2 experiment at Fermilab. The Standard Model prediction is currently based on a data-driven approach tothe HVP using experimental results for σðeþe− → hadronsÞ. Lattice QCD aims to provide a result withsimilar uncertainty from calculated vector-vector correlation functions, but the growth of statistical andsystematic errors in the u=d quark correlation functions at large Euclidean time has made this difficult toachieve. …
