Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Roadside Transportation-Related Air Quality (Startraq 2021): A Characterization Of Bike Trails And Highways In The Fresno/Clovis Area, Jaymin Kwon, Yushin Ahn, Steve Chung

Mineta Transportation Institute

The San Joaquin Valley is identified as an area with a high level of particulate matter (PM) in the air, reaching above the federal and state clean air standards (EPA 2019). Many of the cities in the valley are classified as the most polluted cities in the United States for both particulate matter and ozone pollution (American Lung Association, 2021). To resolve this issue, alternative forms of transportation have been considered in transportation planning. In this study, active transportation mode air quality was monitored on selected Woodward Park and Old Clovis trails and urban bike lanes. Real-time aerosol monitors, and …

Understanding The Role Of Transportation In Human Trafficking In California, Kezban Yagci Sokat Nov 2022

Understanding The Role Of Transportation In Human Trafficking In California, Kezban Yagci Sokat

Mineta Transportation Institute

Human trafficking, a form of modern slavery, is the recruitment, transport, and/or transfer of persons using force, fraud, or coercion to exploit them for acts of labor or sex. According to the International Labor Organization, human trafficking is the fastest growing organized crime with approximately $150 billion in annual profits and 40.3 million individuals trapped in slave-like conditions. While it is not compulsory to involve transportation for human trafficking, the transportation industry plays a critical role in combating human trafficking as traffickers often rely on the transportation system to recruit, move, or transfer victims. This multi-method study investigates the role …

Meshless Large Eddy Simulation Of Propeller-Wing Interactions With Reformulated Vortex Particle Method, Eduardo Alvarez, Andrew Ning Nov 2022

Meshless Large Eddy Simulation Of Propeller-Wing Interactions With Reformulated Vortex Particle Method, Eduardo Alvarez, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

The vortex particle method (VPM) has gained popularity in recent years due to a growing need to predict complex aerodynamic interactions during preliminary design of electric multirotor aircraft. However, VPM is known to be numerically unstable when vortical structures break down close to the turbulent regime. In recent work, the VPM has been reformulated as a large eddy simulation (LES) in a scheme that is both meshless and numerically stable, without increasing its computational cost. In this study, we build upon this meshless LES scheme to create a solver for interactional aerodynamics. Rotor blades are introduced through an actuator line …

Put On The New, Joseph Khabbaz Nov 2022

Put On The New, Joseph Khabbaz

The Main Thing Devotional

To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:22–24)

We often hold onto our old self when we forget that God has made us new.

Context: Tangled commits are changes to software that address multiple concerns at once. For researchers interested in bugs, tangled commits mean that they actually study not only bugs, but also other concerns irrelevant for the study of bugs. Objective: We want to improve our understanding of the prevalence of tangling and the types of changes that are tangled within bug fixing commits. Methods: We use a crowd sourcing approach for manual labeling to validate which changes contribute to bug fixes for each line in bug fixing commits. Each line is labeled by four participants. If at least three participants agree on the …

Do Chief Financial Officers Need To Be Qualified Accountants? A Study Of Whether And When Accounting Qualification May Not Be Necessary For Cfos., Vincent Boon Seng Lim

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Many empirical research studies suggest that Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) with accounting qualifications improve company performance in various ways such as through better financial reporting accuracy (Aier et al., 2005), internal control (Li et al., 2010), corporate governance (Sun et al., 2015) and tax efficiency (Chen et al., 2020). This suggests that CFOs should be qualified in accounting. However, this study found that this may not always be the case.

By looking at the top listed companies in Singapore, it was found that a significant percentage of CFOs are not accounting qualified, which indicates a significant gap. The study conducted …

Matrix Tree Theorem For The Net Laplacian Matrix Of A Signed Graph, Sudipta Mallik Nov 2022

Matrix Tree Theorem For The Net Laplacian Matrix Of A Signed Graph, Sudipta Mallik

Mathematics Faculty Research

For a simple signed graph G with the adjacency matrix A and net degree matrix D±, the net Laplacian matrix is L± = D±−A. We introduce a new oriented incidence matrix N± which can keep track of the sign as well as the orientation of each edge of G. Also L± = N±(N±)T. Using this decomposition, we find the number of both positive and negative spanning trees of G in terms of the principal minors of L± generalizing the Matrix Tree Theorem for an unsigned graph. …

DNA is often referred to as the "molecule of life " since it contains the genetic blueprint for all forms of life on this planet. The core building blocks composing DNA are deoxynucleotides. While the deoxyribose sugar and phosphate group are ubiquitous, it is the composition and spatial arrangement of the four natural nucleobases, adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T), that provide diversity in the coding information present in DNA. The ability of DNA to function as the genetic blueprint has historically been attributed to the formation of proper hydrogen bonding interactions made between complementary nucleobases. However, …

Background For more than a decade, guidelines have recommended a limited 3 months of anticoagulation for the treatment of provoked venous thromboembolism (VTE). How closely real-world practice follows guideline recommendations is not well described. Methods and Results In our multicenter, retrospective cohort study, we evaluated trends in anticoagulation duration for patients enrolled in the MAQI(2) (Michigan Anticoagulation Quality Improvement Initiative) registry who were receiving anticoagulation for a provoked VTE. The MAQI(2) registry comprises 6 centers in Michigan that manage patients' long-term anticoagulation. We identified 474 patients on warfarin and 302 patients on direct oral anticoagulants who were receiving anticoagulation for …

Recovering Classical Legal Constitutionalism: A Critique Of Professor Vermeule's New Theory, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski, Kevin C. Walsh Nov 2022

Recovering Classical Legal Constitutionalism: A Critique Of Professor Vermeule's New Theory, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski, Kevin C. Walsh

Notre Dame Law Review

This Review proceeds in three Parts. Part I briefly summarizes Common Good Constitutionalism and provides a more detailed description of four of the book’s distinctive features. Part II critiques Vermeule’s argument in light of the classical tradition’s four essential aspects of law, namely that it is an ordinance of reason, for the common good, made by one who has care of the community, and promulgated. Part III draws on those reflections to respond to Vermeule’s criticisms of work like ours that argues that original-law-based understandings of the Constitution are at home in the classical legal tradition. A Conclusion briefly reflects …

Bridging Economic And Educational Disparities In America, George W. Zuo Nov 2022

Bridging Economic And Educational Disparities In America, George W. Zuo

Dissertation Awards

In this dissertation, I study policies to bridge disparities in broadband access and job search, school discipline, and local economic development in low-income neighborhoods. In Chapter 2, I present evidence on the relationship between broadband pricing and labor market outcomes for low-income individuals. Specifically, I estimate the effects of a Comcast service providing discounted broadband to qualifying low-income families. I use a triple differences strategy exploiting geographic variation in Comcast coverage, individual variation in eligibility, and temporal variation pre- and post-launch. Local program availability increased employment rates and earnings of eligible individuals, driven by greater labor force participation and decreased …

Gender And Misallocation In The Labor Market, Ingrid Haegele Nov 2022

Gender And Misallocation In The Labor Market, Ingrid Haegele

Dissertation Awards

Managers are important for firm productivity (Bloom and Van Reenen, 2007, Lazear, Shaw and Stanton, 2015). Consequently, firms must decide how to assign the right workers to higher-level jobs (Rosen, 1982, Holmstrom and Tirole, 1989). However, little is known about how firms’ organizational design affects different groups of workers and whether it can explain why women continue to be underrepresented in higher-level positions. In this dissertation, I collect a unique dataset in collaboration with a large multinational firm in order to provide new insights on the key impediments that women face in their career progression. In the first chapter, I …

Essays On Technology And Work, Joonas Tuhkuri

Dissertation Awards

This thesis consists of four papers on technology, work, skills, and personality using novel large-scale data and methods. The first paper (Chapter 1, with Johannes Hirvonen and Aapo Stenhammar) presents novel evidence on the effects of advanced technologies on employment, skill demand, and firm performance. The main finding is that advanced technologies led to increases in employment and no change in skill composition. Our main research design focuses on a technology subsidy program in Finland that induced sharp increases in technology investment in manufacturing firms. Our data directly measure multiple technologies and skills and track firms and workers over time. …

Facing forest change with humility

Jess Kirby

I feel the ultimate beauty of forests is their need for constant change and their willingness to adapt to new conditions. However, if there is one thing I have learned in twenty-five years of public service with federal, state, and local government, when it comes to forests, people do not like change. But ecological change, whether humans like it or not, is integral to healthy and resilient forested landscapes.

Psalms And The City: John Halgrin Of Abbeville And The Paris Context Of A Scholastic Psalms Commentary, Theresa J. Gross-Diaz Nov 2022

Psalms And The City: John Halgrin Of Abbeville And The Paris Context Of A Scholastic Psalms Commentary, Theresa J. Gross-Diaz

History: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Though they were at the core of monastic prayer and a staple of contemplative practice, the Psalms also lent themselves extraordinarily well to addressing the dangers and temptations of the active life. In this short essay I would like to explore scholastic exegesis of the Psalms as a means of addressing social and moral issues in the context of Paris in the early 1200s. The real-life context of medieval scholastic commentaries on the Psalms is something of which few modern scholars make note, and one might argue that these commentaries are not even "scholastic," as they lack significant "rational organisation" …

Here’S The Tea: Antioxidant Capacity And Phenolic Content Of Various Commercial Teas, Shay Lynn Greco

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Tea is historically a widely consumed beverage globally, second only to water. Tea beverages are known to provide plentiful health benefits related to aging and general well-being. Drinking teas may also reduce the risk of many diseases such as developing cancers and vascular diseases. These ancient beverages have a variety of biological activities including anti-tumor, antioxidant and anti-obesity properties. The chemical mechanisms for these health benefits are related to the phenolic and flavonoid compounds present in teas. In this study, the infusions of commercial teas were analyzed using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) assays to determine the …
