Rethinking The Crime Of Rioting, Nick Robinson Nov 2022

Rethinking The Crime Of Rioting, Nick Robinson

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

The fear of riots has long loomed large in the public imagination. This fear is at least partly justified. Riots can present unique challenges, both in the harm they can cause and in the government’s ability to control them. However, from the American colonies to the Civil Rights era, there is also a history of members of largely nonviolent social movements being tarred as “rioters.” This use of the label of “rioting” to undermine dissent is not just a political problem but also a legal one, and it has once again reemerged. Although the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 …

Killing The Motivation Of The Minority Law Professor, Goldburn P. Maynard Jr. Nov 2022

Killing The Motivation Of The Minority Law Professor, Goldburn P. Maynard Jr.

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

This Essay hypothesizes that a significant number of minority junior scholars with radical or non-normative ideas forego those projects or mute them to fit their work within the dominant paradigm of legal scholarship. Even those who move forward and publish their radical or non-normative proposals spend significant time attempting to overcome internal and external resistance, negotiating with mentors, and finding ways to make the radical seem palatable. This disproportionately harms the productivity of minority law professors, not only through inefficiency, but also through the long-term destruction of intrinsic motivation that is vital and overlaps with successful, fulfilling, and productive careers. …

The Diversity Formula: A Race-Neutral Playbook For Equitable Student Assignment And Its Application To Magnet Schools, Joshua Gutzmann Nov 2022

The Diversity Formula: A Race-Neutral Playbook For Equitable Student Assignment And Its Application To Magnet Schools, Joshua Gutzmann

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Contrary to the revisionist history told by some, Brown v. Board of Education did not mark a permanent end to school segregation. Indeed, by some measures, many school districts have experienced increases in racial and socioeconomic segregation over the past few decades. And the impact of this segregation manifests itself in concerning examples of insufficient understanding and empathy across racial and socioeconomic lines. School segregation is a major threat to this nation’s pursuit of the evasive goal of equal opportunity. The Biden-Harris Administration must address school segregation if it is to meet one of its primary priorities: advancing racial equity. …

Optional Legislation, Jacob Bronsther, Guha Krishnamurthi

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Not since the nineteenth century has partisanship been this intense. The only thing that Democrats and Republicans can agree upon, it seems, is that “Washington is broken.” Beyond the chimeras of bipartisanship or enduring one-party rule, this Article proposes a new solution to legislative dysfunction in Washington: optional legislation. Imagine that states could opt in to a federal program—say, universal basic income or Medicare for All—on the condition that they alone foot a higher tax bill to pay for the plan. States that opt out are completely unaffected because they do not have to contribute funds. Given that each party …

Umurangi Generation: The Red Skies Of Neo-Liberalism, Ian Byrne

The Goose

In this video essay I examine the themes of neo-liberal decay and Indigenous resistance present in the photography game Umurangi Generation. Photography games are a video game genre that make taking photos through an in-game camera the mechanical focus. This non-violent engagement prioritizes player expression and exploration, rather than the action and combat focused games that are typical of the medium. Umurangi Generation was released in May 2020 by Australia based developer Nephtali Faulkner and his team ORIGAME DIGITAL. Using a combination of Indigenous knowledge and academic theory ORIGAME DIGITAL aims to create games which challenge conventional video …

Perils Of Heavy Rainfall: Displacement And Resettlement Driven By Floods, Shumaila Hemani Dr. Nov 2022

Perils Of Heavy Rainfall: Displacement And Resettlement Driven By Floods, Shumaila Hemani Dr.

The Goose

Monsoon is typically a season to rejoice in South Asia because it cools off July's hot summer weather. In the poetry of Sufi mystic Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, the monsoon represents a time of abundance, and his verses are prayers of abundance for Sindh and the entire world as rainfall is indeed a much-awaited season to cast off dry spells of the desert. However, in the past few years, climate change has led to heavy floods and massive displacement of poor people in Sindh. This year, floods even reached Karachi's urban city, the biggest metropolis of Pakistan, causing the displacement …

Fertility Counseling For Couples, Brennan Peterson, Kristy Koser Nov 2022

Fertility Counseling For Couples, Brennan Peterson, Kristy Koser

Marriage and Family Therapy Faculty Books and Book Chapters

This chapter addresses the role, and importance, of individual counseling and psychotherapy in providing psychological assistance and support to patients who are struggling with infertility and loss. Depression and anxiety are the two most frequent emotional sequelae of the infertility experience. The chapter therefore speaks not only to what factors contribute to making fertility counselors effective in their work, but also addresses specific treatment approaches that can yield positive outcomes in working with this unique population. These approaches include psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive–behavioral therapy (including dialectical behavior therapy and trauma-focused therapy), and supportive counseling. A brief history and description of each …

Property Versus Antidiscrimination: Examining The Impacts Of Cedar Point Nursery V. Hassid On The Fair Housing Act, Amy Liang Nov 2022

Property Versus Antidiscrimination: Examining The Impacts Of Cedar Point Nursery V. Hassid On The Fair Housing Act, Amy Liang

University of Chicago Law Review

The Fair Housing Act is a groundbreaking federal law enacted in 1968 during the civil rights movement. Reflecting a policy judgment that the public’s interest in eliminating housing discrimination outweighs a prejudicial landlord’s property right to exclude, it prohibits landlords from rejecting tenants on a discriminatory basis. However, as the Act’s promises remain in the process of fulfillment, the Supreme Court’s 2021 decision in Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid has placed it into unprecedented danger: by holding that a regulation authorizing temporary occupations of private property constituted a per se taking that requires compensation under the Takings Clause, Cedar Point …

Applications Of Blockchain In Business Processes: A Comprehensive Review, Wattana Viriyasitavat, Li Xu, Dusit Niyato, Zhuming Bi, Danupol Hoonsopon

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

Blockchain (BC), as an emerging technology, is revolutionizing Business Process Management (BPM) in multiple ways. The main adoption is to serve as a trusted infrastructure to guarantee the trust of collaborations among multiple partners in trustless environments. Especially, BC enables trust of information by using Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). With the power of smart contracts, BC enforces the obligations of counterparties that transact in a business process (BP) by programming the contracts as transactions. This paper aims to study the state-of-the-art of BC technologies by (1) exploring its applications in BPM with the focus on how BC provides the trust …

Continual Learning With Neural Networks, Pham Hong Quang Nov 2022

Continual Learning With Neural Networks, Pham Hong Quang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Recent years have witnessed tremendous successes of artificial neural networks in many applications, ranging from visual perception to language understanding. However, such achievements have been mostly demonstrated on a large amount of labeled data that is static throughout learning. In contrast, real-world environments are always evolving, where new patterns emerge and the older ones become inactive before reappearing in the future. In this respect, continual learning aims to achieve a higher level of intelligence by learning online on a data stream of several tasks. As it turns out, neural networks are not equipped to learn continually: they lack the ability …

Accuracy Of Forensic Pathologists In Incorporating Post-Mortem Ct (Pmct) In Forensic Death Investigation, Yohsuke Makino, Kana Unuma, Kurt B. Nolte, Natalie L. Adolphi Nov 2022

Accuracy Of Forensic Pathologists In Incorporating Post-Mortem Ct (Pmct) In Forensic Death Investigation, Yohsuke Makino, Kana Unuma, Kurt B. Nolte, Natalie L. Adolphi

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) is now performed routinely in some medical examiner's offices, and the images are typically interpreted by forensic pathologists. In this study, the question of whether pathologists appropriately identify significant PMCT findings and incorporate them into the death investigation report and the cause and manner of death (COD and MOD) statements was addressed. We retrospectively reviewed 200 cases where PMCT was performed. The cases were divided into four categories: (1) full autopsy without radiology consultation (n = 77), (2) external exam without radiology consultation (n = 79), (3) full autopsy with radiology consultation (n = 26), (4) …

Development Of The Mentalizing Network Structures And Theory Of Mind In Extremely Preterm Youth, Xiaoxue Fu Ph.D., Andy Hung, Aryanne D. De Silva, Tyler Busch, Whitney I. Mattson, Kristen R. Hoskinson, Hudson Gerry, Eric E. Nelson

Faculty Publications

Adolescents born preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) are at elevated risk for deficits in social cognition and peer relationships. Theory of Mind (ToM) is a complex form of social cognition important for regulating social interactions. ToM and the underlying mentalizing network continue to develop across adolescence. The present study recruited 48 adolescents (12–17 years old) who were either born extremely preterm (EPT; <28 weeks of gestation) or full-term (FT) at birth. Cortical thickness, gray matter volume and surface area were measured in four regions of the mentalizing network: the temporoparietal junction, anterior temporal cortex, posterior superior temporal sulcus and frontal pole (mBA10). We also assessed the adolescents’ performance on a ToM task. Findings revealed both group differences and group-by-age interaction effects in the gray matter indices within the temporal lobe regions of the mentalizing network. The EPT group also performed significantly worse than the FT group on the ToM task. The cortical structural measures that discriminated the EPT and FT groups were not related to ToM performance. These results highlight altered developmental changes in brain regions underlying mentalizing functions in EPT adolescents relative to FT controls.

NFP staff educate participating mothers about pregnancy and follow the family until the child is 2 years old.

The reason for her passion to help these young women is deeply personal.

“I myself was a teen mom and became pregnant with my oldest daughter at 17,” said Daniels, who is pursuing both an MSN in …
