The Effect Of Social Axioms On The Relationship Between Needs And Well-Being, Cătălin Mosoia, Margareta Dincă Nov 2022

The Effect Of Social Axioms On The Relationship Between Needs And Well-Being, Cătălin Mosoia, Margareta Dincă

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The paper investigates the effect of social axioms on the relationship between basic psychological needs and subjective well-being in two groups of adults residing in two different cultural contexts, Romania and the UK. Participants aged 18 to 60 completed an online survey between 22 May 2019 and 1 March 2021. A sample of 425 Romanian participants (M = 40.34, SD = 11.235) answered a questionnaire written in the Romanian language, and 137 English-speaking participants (M = 28.24, SD = 10.741) responded to the same questionnaire but written in the English language. In this study, we used the Basic …

Publishing Without Publishing: The Case For Utrgv Library Poster Displays, Shannon Pensa, Raquel Estrada, William Flores Nov 2022

Publishing Without Publishing: The Case For Utrgv Library Poster Displays, Shannon Pensa, Raquel Estrada, William Flores

University Library Publications and Presentations

During the pandemic, our library, like many others, made the switch to promote library resources for an online centric world. Book displays were reimagined in the form of LibGuides, online flyers and social media posts became more commonplace to reach our patrons. Yet throughout all this online marketing, we had overlooked our institutional repository (IR) to disseminate our creative works. That changed in 2021, when we decided to start uploading poster presentations created to promote library resources and realized that in effect, we became content creators. While the posters are not the traditional form of research and publication, we are …

Linguistic Competence And Bicultural Identity: Mutually (Re)Enforcing Or Compensatory Mechanisms For Acculturation?, Łukasz Kmiotek Nov 2022

Linguistic Competence And Bicultural Identity: Mutually (Re)Enforcing Or Compensatory Mechanisms For Acculturation?, Łukasz Kmiotek

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The article describes a cross-cultural study comparing bicultural identity and bilingualism of first-generation Poles and high school students in the Rhône Alpes Region (France), high school students in Brussels (Belgium) as well as Polish university students of French language and culture in Poland. The study results portray the contrast between Polish students and three other groups acculturating abroad so that French identity appears stronger than Polish among the university students, and Polish identity stronger than French among the migrants. Secondly, acculturative context (home vs host country) is a moderator between Polish-French bilingualism and bicultural identity. Results are discussed in the …

Expatriate Adolescents’ Resilience: Risk And Protective Factors In The Third Culture Context, Jorunn Jo Holmberg, Lilly Augustine, Sahil Datta, Toshie Imada Nov 2022

Expatriate Adolescents’ Resilience: Risk And Protective Factors In The Third Culture Context, Jorunn Jo Holmberg, Lilly Augustine, Sahil Datta, Toshie Imada

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Expatriate children and adolescents typically spend several of their formative years moving from country to country, frequently having to adapt to new cultures, making new friends, and fit into new school systems. It has been established in literature that such frequent changes may cause increased and prolonged risk of developing internalizing behavior problems such as depression and anxiety. However, little is still known regarding which protective factors serve as buffer towards the increased risk within the expatriate demographic. This study examined risk and protective factors among a group of expatriates, adolescents, and their parents, originating from 21 countries on five …

Recall Distortion In Neural Network Pruning And The Undecayed Pruning Algorithm, Aidan Good, Jiaqi Lin, Hannah Sieg, Mikey Ferguson, Xin Yu, Shandian Zhe, Jerzy Wieczorek, Thiago Serra Nov 2022

Recall Distortion In Neural Network Pruning And The Undecayed Pruning Algorithm, Aidan Good, Jiaqi Lin, Hannah Sieg, Mikey Ferguson, Xin Yu, Shandian Zhe, Jerzy Wieczorek, Thiago Serra

Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations

Pruning techniques have been successfully used in neural networks to trade accuracy for sparsity. However, the impact of network pruning is not uniform: prior work has shown that the recall for underrepresented classes in a dataset may be more negatively affected. In this work, we study such relative distortions in recall by hypothesizing an intensification effect that is inherent to the model. Namely, that pruning makes recall relatively worse for a class with recall below accuracy and, conversely, that it makes recall relatively better for a class with recall above accuracy. In addition, we propose a new pruning algorithm aimed …

Activation Of Thioglycosides With Copper(Ii) Bromide, Faranak Pooladian, Samira Escopy, Alexei V. Demchenko Nov 2022

Activation Of Thioglycosides With Copper(Ii) Bromide, Faranak Pooladian, Samira Escopy, Alexei V. Demchenko

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Reported herein is a new protocol for glycosidation of alkyl and aryl thioglycosides in the presence of copper(II) bromide. While the activation with CuBr2 alone was proven suitable for reactive glycosyl donors, the activation of less reactive donors was more efficient in the presence of triflic acid as an additive. A variety of thioglycoside donors in reactions with different glycosyl acceptors were investigated to determine the initial scope of this reaction.

The Gifted Child In Adulthood: Opinions On Educational Experiences And Their Relation To The Current Self, Miranda Brannum Nov 2022

The Gifted Child In Adulthood: Opinions On Educational Experiences And Their Relation To The Current Self, Miranda Brannum

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Giftedness is defined as excelling in a topic beyond the capability of other peers. Oftentimes gifted students are placed in gifted programs and/or assigned gifted Individualized Education Programs in order to provide acceleration and enrichment. My survey asks participants ages 18 years of age or older questions about how they feel gifted programs or gifted Individualized Education Programs may have influenced them, and if they have any comments or suggestions for improving these programs. I intended my study to be descriptive and exploratory to provide insight on any common themes and tendencies people in gifted programs may report. Descriptive and …

Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio Nov 2022

Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This research project aimed to discover how English monolingual speakers interpret the idea of grammatical gender, and if they have an innate bias toward associating common English nouns to the masculine gender. My hypothesis was that participants would assign a masculine grammatical gender to words at a greater than chance due to an existent internalized genderism/sexism within the participants. To gather data, a Qualtrics survey was designed to test participants. Said survey was limited to people who only speak English and contained 10 different common nouns. After the presentation of each noun, participants were given two options: masculine or feminine. …

The Links Between Young Children’S Use Of Pacifiers And Swaddling With Child Sleep Arousal, Kenzie Goldsmith, Melanie Dubois Nov 2022

The Links Between Young Children’S Use Of Pacifiers And Swaddling With Child Sleep Arousal, Kenzie Goldsmith, Melanie Dubois

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Sleep arousal, or waking experiences during sleep, in young children was examined in relation to pacifier usage and the caregiver’s use of the swaddling technique. Primary caregivers of young children from 1 to 24 months old, fluent in English, and 18 years or older completed a Qualtrics survey detailing their child’s sleep routines. The survey questions considered the child’s use of self-soothing devices and the caregiver’s use of soothing techniques, namely pacifiers and swaddling. By utilizing the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire-Revised (BISQ-R; Sadeh et al., 2020), we examined the relationship between child sleep arousal and pacifier usage, along with sleep …

Rethinking Constitutionally Impermissible Punishment, Nadia Banteka, Erika Nyborg-Burch Nov 2022

Rethinking Constitutionally Impermissible Punishment, Nadia Banteka, Erika Nyborg-Burch

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

In this Essay, we discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our understanding of constitutionally permissible punishment. We argue, first, that the protracted failure to act by those who have had authority to do so during this public health emergency created a high risk that incarcerated people would suffer severe illness—and even death—in violation of due process protections and the Eighth Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. Second, we suggest that a changed understanding of public safety in the context of detention and release during public health emergencies has the potential to shift the framework even after the emergency …

Speaking Of The Speech Or Debate Clause: Revising State Legislative Immunity, Shane Coughlin Nov 2022

Speaking Of The Speech Or Debate Clause: Revising State Legislative Immunity, Shane Coughlin

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

An increasing number of America’s most contentious issues will be resolved in state legislatures. Consequently, the ability of litigants to seek judicial review of a legislature’s actions is becoming more important. The scope of state legislative immunity, a federal common-law defense that provides state legislators with absolute immunity against certain lawsuits, will also increase in importance. A recent case involving New Hampshire’s legislature raises two significant questions about the scope of state legislative immunity. The first question entails how the United States Congress can abrogate the immunity, and the second question is whether legislators may claim the immunity when a …

Emergency-Docket Experiments, Edward L. Pickup, Hannah L. Templin Nov 2022

Emergency-Docket Experiments, Edward L. Pickup, Hannah L. Templin

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

This short Essay is the first to analyze the Court’s recent emer-gency-docket experiments and discuss their effectiveness. We conclude that the Court’s interventions have real benefits: giving emergency cases greater procedure improves transparency, boosts public confidence in the Court, and gives guidance to litigants and lower courts.

But experiments are often iterative—it is unusual to hit the right result the first time. So too with the Court’s emergency-docket tinkering. In tweaking its stay factors, the Justices have failed to give suffi-cient guidance to litigants about how those factors will apply in the future. Plus, in transferring Ramirez from the emergency …

Toyota Motors South Africa (Pty) Ltd V Numsa Obo Njini And Others (D 692/19 [2022] Zalcd 12 (14 July 2022), Stephen Nkosi

SAIPAR Case Review

This was an application in terms of s 145 of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1966. Toyota sought to have the decision of the CCMA, ordering the re-instatement of Mr Lungile Njini - then an employee of Toyota for 17 years – be set aside, and that his dismissal be declared fair. The case represents an interesting interplay between the quest for discipline and productivity in the workplace and the right to exercise one’s constitutional right to culture as provided for in s 30 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act. This note is divided into …

Differential Regulation Of Gene Expression Pathways With Dexamethasone And Acth After Early Life Seizures., Jeffrey L Brabec, Mohamed Ouardouz, J Matthew Mahoney, Rod C Scott, Amanda E Hernan

Faculty Research 2022

Early-life seizures (ELS) are associated with persistent cognitive deficits such as ADHD and memory impairment. These co-morbidities have a dramatic negative impact on the quality of life of patients. Therapies that improve cognitive outcomes have enormous potential to improve patients' quality of life. Our previous work in a rat flurothyl-induction model showed that administration of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) at time of seizure induction led to improved learning and memory in the animals despite no effect on seizure latency or duration. Administration of dexamethasone (Dex), a corticosteroid, did not have the same positive effect on learning and memory and has even …

Faculty Research 2022

Germ cell tumours (GCTs) are a heterogeneous group of rare neoplasms that present in different anatomical sites and across a wide spectrum of patient ages from birth through to adulthood. Once these strata are applied, cohort numbers become modest, hindering inferences regarding management and therapeutic advances. Moreover, patients with GCTs are treated by different medical professionals including paediatric oncologists, neuro-oncologists, medical oncologists, neurosurgeons, gynaecological oncologists, surgeons, and urologists. Silos of care have thus formed, further hampering knowledge dissemination between specialists. Dedicated biobank specimen collection is therefore critical to foster continuous growth in our understanding of similarities and differences by age, …

Predictability Of Mechanical Behavior Of Additively Manufactured Particulate Composites Using Machine Learning And Data-Driven Approaches, Steven Malley, Crystal Reina, Somer Nacy, Jérôme Gilles, Behrad Koohbor

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Additive manufacturing and data analytics are independently flourishing research areas, where the latter can be leveraged to gain a great insight into the former. In this paper, the mechanical responses of additively manufactured samples using vat polymerization process with different weight ratios of magnetic microparticles were used to develop, train, and validate a neural network model. Samples with six different compositions, ranging from neat photopolymer to a composite of photopolymer with 4 wt.% of magnetic particles, were manufactured and mechanically tested at quasi-static strain rate and ambient environmental conditions. The experimental data were also synthesized using a data-driven approach based …

If Smoking Were Eliminated, Which Us Counties Would Still Have High Rates Of Smoking-Related Cancers?, Douglas J. Myers, David Kriebel

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective: to characterize the county variability of the impact of smoking elimination on rates of smoking-related cancers and explore whether common environmental indices predicted which metropolitan counties would experience high rates of smoking-related cancers even after smoking was eliminated. Methods: Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data were obtained. County level cancer rates for 257 metropolitan SEER counties, including the observed rates and those predicted after eliminating smoking, were derived via multilevel regression modeling and age standardized to the 2016 SEER population. Associations between the EPA’s Environmental Quality Index (EQI) scores and “Low Benefit” …

Adjustment Of Refugees In Greece As A Social Identity Process: A Longitudinal Study, Angelos Panagiotopoulos, Irene Giovanetti, Vassilis Pavlopoulos

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Many refugees moving into Greece and other European countries often struggle to adjust to their new life. Over and above other factors, social isolation seems to be a major contributor in their poor adjustment outcomes, yet the underlying psychological mechanisms of their links are not well understood. Based on the Social Identity Model of Identity Change, we conceptualized refugees’ adjustment as a major life transition that depends on (i) the maintenance of existing pre-migratory group memberships (social identity continuity pathway), (ii) the development of new post-migratory social identities (social identity gain pathway), and (iii) the perceived compatibility between pre- and …

The 1921 Founding Of The International Missionary Council In The Life Of John R. Mott, Benjamin L. Hartley

SPU Works

The 1921 beginning of the International Missionary Council (IMC) at Lake Mohonk, New York represented a “pivot point” in the life of John R. Mott (1865-1955). It symbolized for him and other participants a bold initiative in international missionary collaboration that had ramifications for liberal internationalism well beyond the Christian movement itself. World War I was devastating for millions throughout the world, but for Mott it was also a time where his influence in world affairs grew. This article focuses on the years after the war as a time of many challenges and disappointments for Mott as he struggled with …

Infectious Diseases Articles

BACKGROUND: Ceftriaxone-resistant (CRO-R) Escherichia coli bloodstream infections (BSIs) are common.

METHODS: This is a prospective cohort of patients with E coli BSI at 14 United States hospitals between November 2020 and April 2021. For each patient with a CRO-R E coli BSI enrolled, the next consecutive patient with a ceftriaxone-susceptible (CRO-S) E coli BSI was included. Primary outcome was desirability of outcome ranking (DOOR) at day 30, with 50% probability of worse outcomes in the CRO-R group as the null hypothesis. Inverse probability weighting (IPW) was used to reduce confounding.

RESULTS: Notable differences between patients infected with CRO-R and CRO-S …

Inspiring Asian American Awareness Through Archival Research: A Gonzaga Case Study, Shyam Sriram, Shayna Pekala, Stephanie Plowman

Foley Library Scholarship

The recent rise in anti-Asian violence in the United States necessitates urgent and immediate scholarly engagement and classroom interventions. The fact that Illinois and New Jersey are the only two states to make Asian Pacific American history a mandatory part of public school curricula—and only did so in 2022—should trouble anyone who believes in equitable representation and education.Drawing on the expertise of two librarians and one political science professor, we created an assignment in the spring 2022 semester—for the first “Asian American Politics” seminar ever offered at Gonzaga University—that combined physical and digital resources for a new kind of archival …
