On the undergraduate side, the University of Dayton has historically offered bachelor's degrees in core, foundational engineering fields, such as chemical, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Students can gain additional technical expertise through obtaining a minor or concentration in a number of specializations, but both the minors and concentrations offer limited coursework and are restricted to what students can fit into their major degree curriculum. Many students have expressed the desire for a more rigorous option, but do not have the time in their schedules for a dual major.

Potential And Chloride Concentration As Thresholds For Crevice Corrosion Initiation In Ss 316l, Y Shorrab, R S. Lillard

This work investigated the relationship between crevice chloride concentration ([Cl−]) and the potential necessary for initiation in stainless steel 316L (SS 316L). Real-time fluorescence measurements were used to measure [Cl−] inside SS 316L crevice assemblies as a function of bulk [Cl−] and potential. Crevice initiation at potentials slightly less than or equal to the bulk repassivation potential was associated with chloride transport, owing to passive dissolution, and an increase in the crevice [Cl−]. Once the [Cl−] within the crevice increased to the concentration necessary to initiate SS 316L pitting at the applied potential, crevice corrosion was initiated. For example, in …

The pygmy rabbit (Sylvilagus idahoensis) is a species of conservation concern that has declined due to fragmentation and loss of essential habitat, primarily sagebrush-steppe. Pygmy rabbits are currently under review for listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) and consequently require a clearer understanding of current distribution and patterns of occurrence in big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) habitats. From 2024 to 2025, we surveyed for pygmy rabbits using remote cameras at several historically occupied sites in Utah, USA, to understand patterns of activity and occupancy. We also compared current estimates of occupancy to historical data collected approximately 20 years ago. …

The efficacy of hydrophobic ocular drugs is significantly hindered by their low bioavailability, for which poor water solubility is a major contributing factor. In this work, we synthesized pilocarpine-derived ionic liquid [Pilo-OEG] Cl (PO) and evaluated its cosolvent properties for the codelivery of the hydrophobic antiglaucoma drug brimonidine (BM) for glaucoma therapy. Pilocarpine was quaternized with 2-[2-(2-chloroethoxy) ethoxy] ethanol in a one-pot reaction to yield PO, and its structure was confirmed using ¹H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy methods and further characterized for its rheological property and thermal stability. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) staff education project addressed a lack of confidence and training for nursing staff who care for patients with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. The practice problem identified at the local project site was the inconsistent care of this patient population. Instructional coaching is a strategy designed to support systematic changes in instructional practices and improve student achievement. In the study site district, teachers were required to use instructional coaching as a mandated form of pedagogical support for enhancing teaching practices and improving student achievement. Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening lung disease that results from direct or indirect insults to the lung, leading to air-blood barrier damage, pulmonary edema, hypoxemia, and multi-organ failure. Hyperoxia, or exposure to high fractions of oxygen, is used as a life-saving therapy to improve blood oxygenation in patients with ARDS. However, it can also worsen lung injury by inducing excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), primarily from mitochondria, and by contributing to the progression of ARDS. Six cases of tutoring Chinese-speaking students and one case with English-speaking American student are presented to demonstrate students’ perceived hierarchy in tutoring sessions, as well as their different preferences and comfort levels with a hierarchical or peer-tutorial dynamic. Some students often addressed the tutor with the formal “you” in Mandarin Chinese, preferred to call tutors “teachers,” and expressed admiration for tutors' educational background, while English-speaking students occasionally signal hierarchical expectations, suggesting this phenomenon may transcend a single cultural group. We demonstrate that secondary ions sputtered from a macrocapillary's inner surface by the primary beam induce premature saturation of the guiding field, hindering fast ion guiding. By suppressing secondary ion sputtering with grooved surfaces, we achieve a guiding-field potential difference exceeding 1 kV, 2 orders of magnitude larger than previously achieved in stable ion guiding. This enables stable guiding of a 20-keV/q O5+ beam at offset angles up to 15°, with transmitted ions retaining their initial energy and charge state. A self-consistent field model accurately reproduces these results, revealing that guiding performance relies on managing secondary ions and the channel's …

Place-based harms comprise direct threats to community wellbeing within the spaces where people live. These harms, rooted in structural and cultural violence, are codified in policies and programs that contribute to poverty, homelessness, over-policing and surveillance, and environmental injustices. This paper argues, although community practitioners are needed to work alongside communities impacted by place-based harms, there are critical tensions and tradeoffs embedded within the place-based strategies.
