Feeding Negativity On Social Media: How Compensating Customers Creates Vicious Cycles Of Complaint, Yuchi Zhang, Kunpeng Zhang

Purpose

The study explores the paradoxical impact of managerial responses to negative comments on social media, revealing how offering compensation inadvertently escalates negativity into a vicious cycle. Through a unique Facebook policy quasi-experiment, we show that apologies, in contrast, effectively neutralize further complaints.

Design/methodology/approach

We utilize interactive data on Facebook to assess how firms' managerial responses to negative comments – particularly responses involving compensation topics – affect the volume and tone of subsequent complaints. Additionally, we use instrumental variables and difference-in-differences (DID) models to account for potential sources of endogeneity.

Children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN), especially those with mental health needs, often receive services from multiple service sectors, including schools. Thus, care coordination may play a critical role in access to mental health care for these children. This cross-sectional study used multivariable logistic regression with pooled data from the National Survey of Children’s Health (2020–2023), focusing on a subsample of children with caregiver-reported mental health problems and a reported need for mental healthcare. The Psychology Of Offensive And Defensive Intergroup Violence: Preregistered Insights From 58 Countries, Jonas R. Kunst, Tomasz Besta, Michał Jaśkiewicz, Et Al, Lauren E. Duncan

Historically, intergroup violence has been motivated by both offensive and defensive goals, often blending narratives of protection with ambitions of domination. In a preregistered study spanning 58 countries, we show that defensive and offensive extremist intentions are positively correlated yet psychologically distinct, relating differently to individual and societal factors. Defensive extremist intentions were far more common and primarily linked to narcissism and Machiavellianism, whereas offensive extremist intentions were primarily associated with social dominance orientation and religious fundamentalism, were lower in more democratic and developed societies, and higher in those experiencing violence and conflict. However, only a small percentage of CHDs has a known genetic cause, highlighting the need for research surrounding heart development and the pathogenesis of CHDs. Working hard and persisting through challenges (i.e., striving) are often encouraged for children who face adversity.  But for children facing severe adversity, striving can come with hidden costs. This brief summarizes findings from a study using data from the Environmental Exposures and Child Health Outcomes (EECHO) cohort (N=283, 2013-2017) of children ages 9-11 in Syracuse, NY. The authors find that children facing adversity who strived harder reported lower depression and hostility. However, high-striving high-adversity children also experienced significantly higher blood pressure and enlarged heart chambers than their lower striving peers, both risk factors for future heart disease.

To engage elementary learners in the complex task of STEM sensemaking, teachers must entice and inspire learners to ask questions, explore, and communicate their findings. This article shares a 5E/3D lesson designed and taught in our elementary science methods courses to model how preservice teachers can integrate literacy and mathematics into a science investigation for STEM sensemaking. We modified a traditional lesson on bird beak adaptations to have a differentiated, interdisciplinary writing component justified by data. We discuss why data-supported literacy is a non-negotiable in science education reforms and how teachers can differentiate tasks to make scientific writing more approachable …

Background

Humanized APOE targeted-replacement (TR) mice are essential tools for studying apoE isoform effects in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other apoE-related disorders. Despite their widespread use, existing APOE mouse models, generated with different gene targeting strategies, have not been directly compared in terms of apoE isoform expression, lipid profiles, and transcriptomic signatures. Such differences could impact how we interpret APOE genotype-related outcomes, as well as related underlying molecular mechanisms.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a low-cost, low-power biosensing technology with growing applications in education, particularly for monitoring cognitive load in eXtended Reality (XR) learning environments. Measuring cognitive load is critical for preventing overload and optimising immersive learning, yet existing approaches such as self-reports or Electroencephalography (EEG) are often intrusive, costly or impractical for real-time use. This systematic review is the first to synthesize a decade of research (2015–2025) on the use of PPG for cognitive load measurement in XR.
