Marine Vehicle Dynamics Using Koopman Operator Theory With Hybrid Observables, Mikhalib A L Green
Marine Vehicle Dynamics Using Koopman Operator Theory With Hybrid Observables, Mikhalib A L Green
LSU Master's Theses
Accurate modeling of marine vehicle dynamics remains challenging due to strong nonlinear hydrodynamic effects, environmental disturbances, and sensitivity to configuration changes, particularly for small-scale platforms. Classical physics-based models require extensive parameter identification and often exhibit degraded performance outside narrow operating regimes, while purely data-driven approaches may lack structure or impose high computational cost. This thesis presents a data-driven Koopman operator framework with hybrid observables for modeling the dynamics of unmanned marine vehicles. The proposed approach combines structured monomial observables with a learned neural network embedding to construct a lifted state representation in which the nonlinear vehicle dynamics are approximated by …
Large-Scale File Fragment Classification Via Multi-View Learning, Samuel Hildebrand
Large-Scale File Fragment Classification Via Multi-View Learning, Samuel Hildebrand
LSU Master's Theses
File reassembly is one of the most fundamental tasks in digital forensics, enabling recovery of data from potentially damaged storage media even when file system metadata is unavailable. This thesis reviews more than two decades of work in the realm of file carving, with a particular focus on fragmented file carving, which remains a focus of research, and file fragment classification, a principal component of fragmented file carving. This thesis serves a literature review of both file carving and fragmented file carving, surveys the massive amounts of data needed for the task of fragment classification and the datasets that serve …
Edges That Touch, Tommi Bonomo
Edges That Touch, Tommi Bonomo
LSU Master's Theses
Gender, a social construct, exists on a spectrum that is shaped by social, cultural, and embodied experience. Edges That Touch examines the instability of gender through the lens of combat sports, focusing on the way the hypermasculine environment abstracts femme identities. Informed by my lived experience, the work investigates the paradox in which empowerment and alienation coexist and destabilizes gender binaries.
Edges That Touch uses experimental graphic design processes and mixed media to recreate the psychological landscape and emotional realities that I navigated as a cisgender woman in the world of combat sports. I use visual techniques that obscure legibility …
Expanding Access To Latin American Art Song: A Study Of Theodoro Valcárcel's Andean-Influenced Art Songs, Douglas E. Perez
Expanding Access To Latin American Art Song: A Study Of Theodoro Valcárcel's Andean-Influenced Art Songs, Douglas E. Perez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
EXPANDING ACCESS TO LATIN AMERICAN ART SONG: A STUDY OF THEODORO VALCÁRCEL’S ANDEAN-INFLUENCED ART SONGS advocates for the exploration and performance of underrepresented Latin American composers. Multiple methods of increasing access are discussed, including the creation of a central source for IPA, literal, and poetic translations of Latin American art songs; the study of seldom-performed composers, their output, and influences; and the application of these elements through informed performance. This document centers on the Peruvian composer Theodoro Valcárcel and analyzes the intersection of his indigenous heritage with his Latin American and European musical training as reflected in his compositional style …

Endowed With Intelligence From On High: Scriptural Patterns Of Divinely Augmented Knowing, Yoshihiko Ariizumi
Endowed With Intelligence From On High: Scriptural Patterns Of Divinely Augmented Knowing, Yoshihiko Ariizumi
Learning, Teaching, & Researching Optimization
The four standard works of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contain numerous accounts in which individuals exhibit intellectual capacities — of perception, reasoning, problem-solving, and articulation — that demonstrably exceed their natural endowments and circumstances. This essay identifies twenty such accounts, organizes them into five conceptual typologies, and draws from each typology a set of concrete, actionable proposals for faculty at Brigham Young University who seek to integrate divine assistance into their scholarly and pedagogical work. The central argument is that the patterns encoded in Latter-day Saint scripture constitute not merely historical records of miraculous intervention but …

Being There For Mom: The Strengths Of Daughtering, Allison M. Alford, Kaitlin E. Phillips, Luke V. Stipanovic, Cayd A. Rocha-Barnette, Michelle Miller-Day
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
Objective
Daughters undertake daughtering, or the everyday role portrayal of contributing to a meaningful family relationship with their mothers, but the labor of it is often invisible.
Background
Using a strengths-based approach, we investigated what daughters do well in their relationships with mothers.
Method
We analyzed the responses of 1,444 women to the open-ended question, “What do you do well as a daughter?” to learn more about how women describe their daughtering. Utilizing the artificial intelligence of a large language model for data analysis, we supplied definitions and descriptions of 12 virtues and strengths from existing literature and created a …

Background and objectives: Contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) is a potentially preventable complication after exposure to iodinated contrast media. In patients undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS), the incidence and clinical impact are poorly characterized, and no validated prediction tool is currently available. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence and prognostic significance of CA-AKI in EVT-treated patients with AIS and to develop and validate a predictive score.
Methods: A retrospective, multicenter cohort study was conducted involving EVT-treated patients across 73 centers in 16 countries (January-December 2023). Inclusion criteria were age ≥18 years, absence …

BACKGROUND: The thalamus plays an important role in key clinical conditions of focal temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), but no investigation has examined whether the same thalamic local and connectome properties shape a patient's status across these different conditions.
METHODS: This retrospective longitudinal MRI study used resting-state fMRI and structural imaging to identify whole-brain focal/regional and connectome-level features associated with six binary clinical conditions of TLE (pre/post-surgery, seizure and neurocognitive outcomes, pathology, seizure subtype, and SOZ lateralization) in 91 patients across two centers (age range: 15-65 years) and 85 matched healthy participants (age range: 18-60 years).
RESULTS: Across conditions, relative to …

Molecular Characterization Of Humanized Apoe Mouse Models Reveals Source And Genotype Dependent Differences, Na Wang, David M Holtzman, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Humanized APOE targeted-replacement (TR) mice are essential tools for studying apoE isoform effects in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other apoE-related disorders. Despite their widespread use, existing APOE mouse models, generated with different gene targeting strategies, have not been directly compared in terms of apoE isoform expression, lipid profiles, and transcriptomic signatures. Such differences could impact how we interpret APOE genotype-related outcomes, as well as related underlying molecular mechanisms. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive molecular comparison of humanized APOE mouse models from three sources: Taconic Biosciences (TAC), the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (CAF), and The Jackson Laboratory (JAX). We assessed apoE …

ObjectivesClinical psychology interventions for reducing obesity have developed alongside pharmacological and surgical treatments, but usually as interventions for individual patients. Any healthcare intervention rests on a logic model: assumptions that through specific physical and social mechanisms, it will produce certain intended outcomes, provided that conducive background conditions (‘contexts’) exist. Using evidence from the feasibility trial preceding a full randomised controlled trial (RCT), this paper assesses the empirical validity of the initial logic model of a new group-based weight management intervention: PROGROUP, designed for patients with body mass index (BMI) ≥40 kg/m2 or ≥35 kg/m2 with comorbidities. We aimed to test …

Geometry-Driven Controls On Hydrothermal Natural Hydrogen Generation From Magnetite Mineral, Kaveh Moghanirahimi, Lionel Esteban, Valeriya Shulakova, Muhammad Ali, Stefan Iglauer, Alireza Keshavarz
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Despite recent efforts to investigate hydrothermal natural hydrogen production from magnetite, the effects of sample geometry and surface area on hydrogen yields remain inadequately characterized. This study compares hydrogen production from natural magnetite prepared as an intact slab versus fine powder under identical experimental conditions (pH 9, 200 °C, 103.4 bar, 60 days). The results show that magnetite powder yielded 0.052 mmol g−1 rock hydrogen, approximately fivefold higher than the slab. Comprehensive characterization of the magnetite slab revealed increased surface roughness after reaction. Quantitative XRD analysis showed substantial phase conversion from magnetite to hematite, consistent with oxidation of Fe2+ to …

Small cell carcinoma is a highly lethal cancer variant often found with neuroendocrine (NE) features, as exemplified by small cell lung cancer and small cell NE prostate cancer (SCPC). A genome-wide CRISPR dependency screen using SCPC models generated through human prostate cell transformation identifies a requirement for the transcription factor E2F3. E2F3 dependency is linked to RB inactivation, a near universal occurrence across small cell cancers. The requirement for E2F3 is shared by RB-deficient cells originating from the prostate, lung, and adnexa. In RB-deficient cancer cells, E2F3 inhibition restrains cell cycle progression, proliferation, and tumor growth in vivo. Inhibition of …
