The Theorizing Of Terrorism Within Criminology, Daren Fisher, Erin M. Kearns Jan 2023

The Theorizing Of Terrorism Within Criminology, Daren Fisher, Erin M. Kearns

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Objectives. While terrorism studies were once castigated as atheoretical and unempirical, criminology has been well suited to apply theories of crime to terrorism and to then test those theories with rigorous methods and robust data. The present study takes stock of how criminologists have theorized about terrorism and tested those theories over time in 13 of the discipline’s leading journals. Methods. The study systematically examines theoretical framing, hypotheses, methodological approach, focus within criminology and criminal justice, and policy recommendations in terrorism-focused articles. Results. While terrorism has become more central within top journals, sparse attention has been paid to many criminological …

Aiot-Based Smart Home Energy Management System, Mohammad Abdellatif, Ahmed K. Salama Jan 2023

Aiot-Based Smart Home Energy Management System, Mohammad Abdellatif, Ahmed K. Salama

Electrical Engineering

Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) is a relatively new technology that combines Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things. IoT devices can be integrated into large-scale systems for many modern applications. This results in a large amount of collected data, which needs efficient, and intelligent data processing for optimal use. Data can be processed and utilized for problem solving, decision making, and data prediction using AI. AI can increase the value of IoT, while IoT can improve AI's intel-ligence and learning. However, there are many obstacles to AIoT implementation such as complexity, precision, and efficiency. This study focuses on AI-powered IoT …

Students’ Contrasting Their Experiences Of Teacher Expectations In Streamed And Mixed Ability Classes: A Study Of Grade 10 Students In Western Australia, Olivia Johnston, Helen Wildy, Jennifer Shand Jan 2023

Students’ Contrasting Their Experiences Of Teacher Expectations In Streamed And Mixed Ability Classes: A Study Of Grade 10 Students In Western Australia, Olivia Johnston, Helen Wildy, Jennifer Shand

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Many secondary schools sort students into ‘ability’-based classes, but research shows that streaming students by ability is inequitable and does not improve student academic results. There has been little qualitative research that considers students’ experiences of streaming, with none that compares students’ experiences in classes that are streamed against the same students’ experiences in other classes that are mixed-ability. The research in this paper explains student experiences of differences between their streamed and mixed-ability classrooms, including the perceived influence on their educational outcomes. The study is unique because the results project the voices of 25 Grade 10 secondary school students …

International Review of Business and Economics

Going concerns of business empires is predicated on the externality effect of environmental contingencies that influence the decisions of capital users. Hence, the study aims of dissecting effect of macro and micro environmental contingences on the capital structure and firm performance. Generalized Method Moment (GMM) statistical tool is used to dissect perceived association amidst endogenous and exogenous variables. The results show that micro contingences such debt to equity, debt to assets and short-term liability have negative and statistically …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Herein, we evaluated the hepatic lipid metabolic profiles of bovine fetuses in response to maternal vitamin and mineral supplementation (VMSUP; supplemented (VTM) or not (NoVTM)) and two different rates of gain (GAIN; low gain (LG), 0.28 kg/d, or moderate gain (MG), 0.79 kg/d). Crossbred Angus heifers (n = 35; initial BW = 359.5 ± 7.1 kg) were randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, resulting in the following treatment combinations: NoVTM-LG (n = 9), NoVTM-MG (n = 9), VTM-LG (n = 9), and VTM-MG (n = 8). Heifers received their treatments until d …

Driver And Bicyclist Comprehension Of Blue Light Detection Confirmation Systems, Douglas P. Cobb, Hisham Jashami, Christopher Monsere, Sirisha Kothuri, David S. Hurwitz

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study analyzed motorist and bicyclist understanding and preference of positive confirmation of detection of a bicycle by the traffic signal infrastructure using a blue light detection confirmation (BLDC). The research analyzed results of an online survey of 1,123 respondents and intercept survey of 337 respondents. The study initially found that participants of the survey did not understand the meaning of the blue light itself, but comprehension of the system rose from 40% to 50% when supplemental signs were used. Respondents overwhelmingly indicated that they preferred the sign option that included symbols, text, and a representation of the blue light, …

Hot For Hot Chocolate, Jase Graves

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

I’ve never been a huge fan of hot chocolate. For some reason, I don’t enjoy cauterizing the inside of my mouth after being duped by the deceptively-tepid whipped cream or marshmallow topping.
