Contesting Narratives: Sibling Relations As Political Allegory In Lā Tukhbir Al-Ḥiṣān, Noha Hanafy

This article explores sibling relations in Mamdūḥ ‘Azzām’s (1950- ) Lā tukhbir al-ḥiṣān (2019, Don’t Tell the Horse). Using Mikhail Bakhtin’s (1895-1975) theories on the dialogic nature of the novel and the polyphony of voices existing in a single text, the article charts the characters’ movement in and out of the different storylines in ‘Azzām’s novel, and the way in which this informs the dynamic of the family story. Lending itself to multiple perspectives, ‘Azzām’s novel foregrounds the siblings’ voices over a singular authorial voice, highlighting not only their relationships in the novel, but also the way they offer …

A lack of routine environmental observations located near deepening cumulus congestus clouds limits verification of important theorized and simulated updraft–environment interaction processes occurring during deep convection initiation (CI). We analyze radiosonde profiles collected during several hundred CI events near a mountain range in central Argentina during the CACTI field campaign. Statistical analyses illustrate environmental conditions supporting radar-observed CI outcomes that span a spectrum of convective cell depths, widths, and durations, as well as events lacking precipitating convection. Tested environmental factors include a large variety of sounding-derived measurements of CAPE, CIN, moisture, terrain-relative winds, vertical shear, and lifted parcel properties, with …

Objectives: Small-diameter afferent axons carry various sensory signals that are critical for vital physiological conditions but sometimes contribute to pathologies. Infrared (IR) neural inhibition (INI) can induce selective heat block of small-diameter axons, which holds potential for translational applications such as pain management. Previous research suggested that IR–heating-induced acceleration of voltage-gated potassium channel kinetics is the mechanism for INI. Therefore, we hypothesized that other heating methods, such as resistive heating (RH) in a cuff, could reproduce the selective inhibition observed in INI. Transgender individuals are erased from the historical narrative due to little definitive evidence of their existence in language, literature, or the archaeological record. Items like clothing, textiles, and wigs, which distinguished them from cisgender people, are largely lost to time. However, one way that we can view gender nonconformity is through art. This presentation analyzes the use of androgyny and gender non-conformity in Greco-Roman marble statues, focusing on Apollo. Although he is biologically male, Apollo is known for being effeminate and gender non-conforming. Ceanothus velutinus Douglas ex Hook. (snowbrush ceanothus) is a native evergreen species that possesses significant potential for use in urban landscapes. Ceanothus velutinus fixes nitrogen in symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing actinobacteria and plays an important soil-building role. However, it is unclear how to effectively induce nodules in C. velutinus using soil containing Frankia bacteria. The purpose of this study was to understand plant growth and nodulation of C. velutinus in different soilless substrates. This research studies how the viscoelastic properties of chocolate change through the 72-hour grinding process of chocolate manufacturing. Utah State University's Aggie Chocolate Factory produces chocolate from single-origin sources, each of which has a unique flavor, and thus a unique chemistry. This research explores the effects of grinding time on the viscoelasticity of each of these origins' chocolate types, including dark, sweet dark chocolate, and milk chocolate. Federal national security related data centers are increasingly threatened as drought conditions increase in Utah and Idaho. The NSA and FBI data centers in these locations process digital information that informs local and national decision makers of critical national security occurrences. Data centers use water-based cooling systems to prevent hardware failure from overheating, that, while energy efficient, consume large quantities of water. Data centers cannot operate without robust cooling mechanisms. In 2019, community fishponds were established near two towns in Eastern Uganda by Ideal Life Vision Uganda with the support of Rotary International. Carbon monoxide (CO) has unique therapeutic properties including anti-cancer effects. Flavonols such as 3-hydroxyflavone can release CO upon exposure to visible light. Gallium(III) also has anti-cancer properties and can replace Fe(III) in biological processes. This research was focused on synthesizing a family of complexes with gallium(III) bound to 3-hydroxyflavone and similar ligands which can hopefully combine the anti-cancer properties of both gallium and CO. This idea was simply adumbrated in Plato’s work, but its importance to his philosophical worldview cannot be underestimated. This article argues that international human rights law (IHRL) at a system-wide level produces paternalistic effects that undermine the work it is meant to do for rightsholders. Analyzing the work of four key United Nations human rights treaty bodies, we show how institutional arrangements exclude rightsholders from having a say on their own interests in what IHRL should mean for them, and we are instead left with a body of norms, guidelines, and institutions with self-serving dynamics that reinforce the position of IHRL institutions and only secondarily benefit rightsholders.

2009 brought an existential crisis to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). In November, it unanimously ordered Italy to remove crucifixes from public schools. Backlash was unprecedented. The government promptly announced it would not comply. Politicians and social actors all across the political spectrum harshly criticized the decision and bashed the Court. Ten European countries joined Italy in referring the case to the Grand Chamber of the Court, which reversed the decision in 2011. The storm abated. Lautsi v. Native American tribal nations covet state and federal tribal recognition. The Lumbee Tribe is one of those tribes. Though North Carolina has granted the Lumbee Tribe State recognition, the Lumbee Tribe's 134-year-long quest for Federal recognition has not been successful. Neither of the two types of Federal Recognition – Administrative and Congressional – have permitted the Lumbee Tribe to benefit alongside the other federally-recognized Tribes from increased respect, sovereignty, and resources. Instead, the Lumbee Tribe has been spun around by the regulatory recognition rigmarole.
