A left-sided appendix is an uncommon clinical entity, often attributed to congenital anomalies such as situs inversus or intestinal malrotation; however, it can also result from anatomical displacement by other organs. We report a case of a 22-year-old woman presenting to the emergency department with right lower quadrant pain which was initially suspected as appendicitis. A non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scan identified a right kidney stone as the source of pain, alongside an incidentally discovered, non-inflamed appendix displaced entirely into the mid-left lower quadrant. Pre-Excited Atrial Fibrillation In A Woman With Minimal Pre-Excitation: A Case Report, Komsing Methavigul

Introduction: A 46-year-old Thai woman presented with palpitation. A 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) showed rapid rate of preexcited atrial fibrillation (AF). The subsequent ECG after electrical cardioversion demonstrated minimal preexcitation with short PR interval, and apparently small delta waves only in leads II, III, V₄, and V₅. An electrophysiologic study was performed and showed sinus rhythm with short H-V interval compatible with preexcitation. A programmed electrical stimulation showed orthodromic atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia utilizing left lateral accessory pathway. Background:

The development of vaccines has played a significant role in managing the pandemic of COVID-19. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on mortality and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions.

Methods:

This retrospective, single-center cohort study included hospitalized COVID-19 patients with confirmed vaccination status from July 2021 to February 2022. Outcomes such as mortality and ICU admission were evaluated using clinical data. We used logistic regression and advanced statistical methods, including LASSO regression, to analyze differences in hospitalized COVID-19 patients based on vaccination status.

Vascular endothelial growth factor polymorphisms of VEGF coding for VEGF protein that plays an important part in carcinogenesis through angiogenesis required for tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis. Background: Scorpion stings are a major public health issue in tropical and subtropical regions of Iran, especially in Hormozgan Province, which has a high incidence rate. This study aims to analyze the epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of scorpion sting cases in Qeshm County over a four-year period (2021-2024).

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed hospital records of 408 scorpion sting cases. Information on demographic, temporal, geographical, clinical, and treatment factors was collected. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean ± SD) and analytical tests (Chi-square for categorical variables) were employed for analysis.

Introduction: Cyanide toxicity disrupts cellular respiration by inhibiting mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase a3, resulting in cellular hypoxia. The cellular response to hypoxia is mediated by hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) and associated microRNAs (hypoxamiRs). Among these, miR-429 and miR-200b have been implicated in HIF regulation and are reported to be upregulated during acute hypoxic conditions. However, their specific roles in cyanide-induced hypoxia remain poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of miR-429 and miR-200b in postmortem peripheral blood from cyanide poisoning cases. Methods: Postmortem blood was obtained from five cyanide poisoning cases and five non-asphyxial controls (PMI < 24 h). Total RNA was extracted, and 10 ng was used for cDNA synthesis with MultiScribe™ Reverse Transcriptase. Expression of miR-429 and miR-200b was quantified using TaqMan™ MicroRNA Assays on a QuantStudio™ 5 system. Relative expression was calculated by the 2^−ΔΔCT method and compared using the Mann–Whitney U test. One cyanide case was excluded due to low RNA quality. Glaciers populate the mountain ranges of the western conterminous United States and despite their importance to alpine hydrology, their area and volume change have never been comprehensively evaluated. Our study shows that since the mid-twentieth century about one-quarter of the glaciers have disappeared and the overall area and volume are reduced by one-third. The pattern of glacier shrinkage suggests most glaciers in the conterminous United States are largely maintained by local topographic influences due to their small size. These results improve our understanding of evolving high alpine hydrology and importance to ecosystem processes.

Practice Problem: Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) systems are insulin pumps that communicate with continuous glucose monitors to administer insulin at set intervals to alter one’s blood glucose to a preset target. AID systems have been proven to lower patients’ Hemoglobin A1Cs, but successful operation of the AID system can be complicated for patients and their families. This can lead to diabetes-related emergency room visits and hospital admissions. Manuel de Falla’s Homenaje pour “Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy” presents a complex identity knot that reflects Debussyan Alhambrism back onto its inspiration, drawing from both classical and folk traditions. This is the first research project to approach that knot from the perspective of historically inspired performance. It identifies a fascinating counterpart to its complexity in the stylistically hybrid guitar practices that were common at the time Falla composed his miniature masterpiece. More than 100 graves at East End and Evergreen cemeteries, adjacent historical Black burial grounds in Richmond, Virginia, are marked by unusually thin headstones with physical features indicating prior use as the top surfaces of wooden furnishings. Using biographical sources for the deceased (with known death years ranging from 1899 to 1958) and the family members who likely provided the headstones, as well as records of a local stone-carving company, selected examples from cemeteries elsewhere in the American Southeast, and archaeological theories of reuse, this study explores possible economic, social, and symbolic motivations for repurposed furniture-top grave markers. Antiplatelet Therapy In 2026: P2y12 And Cox Inhibition In Cardiogenic Shock: A Narrative Review, Phillip Weeks

Antiplatelet therapy is critical in patients with acute coronary syndromes experiencing cardiogenic shock (CS) to prevent stent thrombosis and reduce the risk of major adverse cardiac events. Its role is particularly important after percutaneous revascularization; however, the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects of antiplatelet therapy may be significantly altered in patients who experience CS. This narrative review discusses the pathophysiologic changes associated with CS that affect antiplatelet agents and provides a concise overview of the related literature on P2Y12 inhibitor selection and the role of aspirin after percutaneous revascularization in this high-risk population.

Formaldehyde monitoring requires electrochemical platforms with stable structures and reliable interfacial responses. This study aimed to prepare and characterize a Cu|CS–GLA/ZnO–PSf composite film on a copper substrate as a platform for further formaldehyde-sensing development. The film was characterized using FTIR, SEM–EDX, XRD, and cyclic voltammetry. FTIR supported the presence of features associated with chitosan, imine, polysulfone, and Zn–O, while SEM–EDX revealed a heterogeneous polymer-rich coating with Zn- and O-containing domains distributed non-uniformly. XRD indicated a predominantly amorphous or poorly crystalline structure. Cyclic voltammetry showed scan-rate-dependent peak separations, with ΔEp increasing from 0.632 to 0.777 V in citrate buffer and from …

Families raising children with autism spectrum disorder face chronic stress, social isolation, and significant barriers to accessing consistent, relevant support. Existing digital tools are largely child-focused, fragmented, and not designed with caregiver well-being or peer connection in mind. This mixed-methods exploratory study assessed the viability of a community-based mobile application designed to address those gaps by connecting caregivers, providing practical strategies, and facilitating access to professional guidance.

Cold-pool structure controls the confinement of wintertime ozone and its precursors in Utah’s Uinta Basin. Previous studies have documented difficulty capturing stable cold pools in meteorological models, complicating air quality simulations when pollutants disperse too readily. Herein, we evaluate the meteorology behind one such high-ozone event on 2 February 2013 with Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulations; the chemistry is not simulated. We test the sensitivity to Global Forecast System (GFS) or North American Mesoscale (NAM) forcing, domain feedback, boundary-layer and surface-layer schemes, slope-aware radiation, and terrain datasets (fine versus coarse). “I’M Never Enough”: Associations Of Childhood Emotional Abuse Subtypes With Overweight Preoccupation And Dietary Restraint Among Women, Kayla Queen, Megan Sweeney, David A. Frederick

Childhood emotional abuse from authority figures encompasses verbal abuse, emotional rejection, and overexpectations. Although global emotional abuse is an established correlate of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, the unique roles of these specific subtypes remain underexamined. Across two studies of adult women recruited from CloudResearch (Ns = 2566; 824), we evaluated associations between authority figure abuse subtypes, body image, and dietary restraint. Bivariate correlations revealed that all subtypes related to poorer body image and higher restraint. Hierarchical regressions demonstrated that emotional abuse subtypes explained incremental variance across outcomes beyond demographic factors. Policy Briefs and Reports

This policy brief examines educational performance and outcomes for Native American learners in Nevada using data from the Nevada P-20 to Workforce Research Data System provided by the Nevada Department of Education and the Nevada System of Higher Education. Based upon analysis of these data and information collected from state and national sources, we propose public policy interventions to support Native American students in Nevada. The brief also evaluates the significant measurement and data challenges that limit researchers’ ability to evaluate Native American educational pathways and the implications this has for policy decisions.
