Modality Of Scholars’ Books Have Been Sold After Their Death From The Third Century To The Ninth Century Ah: Historical-Analytical Study, Hana Kadham Khalefaa

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The idea of the research revolves around the fate of the books of scholars that were sold exclusively after their death, and the fate they experienced and their contribution to enriching scientific life in one way or another, Of course, this is a refuge and sympathy for its owners who had no desire to sell it after their death, and perhaps they wanted to reward one of them by keeping his library so that the student of knowledge would benefit from it without resorting to selling it, Because many of those who sold books caused their owners to waste their …

Excerpts From The Prophet's (Pbuh) Remarks On Abu Talib Bin Abdulmutallab, Hossein Mohtadi, Dalal Abbas

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

Abutaleb is the first poet whose language has been elaborated by the Prophet (pbuh) before and after the Ba'ath. What is written in the eulogy of the Prophet (PBUH) is divided into two categories: 1- Poems in the eulogy of the Prophet (PBUH) before the Beatitudes; The most important question of the research is what topics and subjects did Abu Talib use before and after the Prophet's (PBUH) prayers? By examining Abu al-Talib's court, we can conclude that the poet had a paternalistic view of the Prophet (PBUH) before the Prophet (PBUH). Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) has advocated as a Prophet, …

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The Imams' words include epistemological and ontological foundations to examine various perspectives, including sign-semantics. Sign-semantics is one of the contemporary theories in the interpretation and explanation of thought systems and linguistic features. It is also a scientific tool for analyzing discourse systems that study the meaning formation and production mechanisms in texts. One of these trends is Pierce semiotics, which has extensive dimensions in the analysis of linguistic signs. The present study aimed to analyze the sign-semantic of love in the hadiths based on Pierce's semiotic approach. First, we explored some narrations concerning "love" from the perspective of substitution, companionship, …

Sentimentalist poetry is undoubtedly a landmark in the course of early and modern Arab poetry, as poetry and emotion are strongly connected in the very structure of human beings. When poets composing a poem, regardless of intentions or purposes, such poem must echo those heart-touching, internal feelings. Al-Samawi has been one of those sentimentalist poets whose emotions have dominated poetic structure or whose words have dominated their emotions. The poems made, therefore, have proved to be purely emotional and sentimentalist. This paper investigates sentimentalism in Al-Samawi's poems as to language, mainly the lexicographic structure. The paper, therefore, surveys sentimentalist words …

Teachers’ And Learners’ Attitudes Towards The Place Of The Speaking Skill In The Efl Curriculum, Ahmed Hamid Abdulrazzaq

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The teaching of the speaking skill is given very little weight in the EFL curriculum at many educational institutions due to decision makers' conviction that listening and speaking are not as important as the "academic" skills of reading, writing, and grammar. The present study investigates the attitudes of students and English teachers toward the importance of teaching the speaking skill within the EFL curriculum. Forty-two students and ten English teachers participated in the study, which was designed on a survey basis using an open-ended questionnaire. Analysis of the data revealed participants' appreciation of the role that this skill plays in …

Use Of The Theory Of Conceptual Metaphor In Two Sonnets By Victorian Female Poets, Baidaa Abbas Ghubin Mar 2023

Use Of The Theory Of Conceptual Metaphor In Two Sonnets By Victorian Female Poets, Baidaa Abbas Ghubin

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

This paper has applied the theoretical framework of conceptual metaphor theory to the analysis of the source and target domains of metaphors that are used in two English nineteenth century sonnets, both written by contemporaneous female poets. The quantitative and qualitative results of the textual analysis have clearly revealed that Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s sonnet 23 centres around the conceptual mapping of the journey of love and life with that of possession. In contrast, Christina Rossetti’s sonnet Remember tackles the central conceptual mapping of death as a journey in relation to its further experiential connections. In addition, the application of conceptual …

Tender Is The Night And Scott Fitzgerald’S Artistic Creativity, Narges Bayat, Ali Taghizadeh Mar 2023

Tender Is The Night And Scott Fitzgerald’S Artistic Creativity, Narges Bayat, Ali Taghizadeh

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

Scott Fitzgerald’s perspective on the film industry is very complicated. His interest in the visual discourse of the cinema can be regarded as an aesthetic yearning for a meaningful and deliberate discourse that would highlight the importance of visual and spatial descriptions over linguistic ones. This research paper aims to provide some new insight into Tender Is the Night (1934). The argument of this article is based on the fact that Fitzgerald’s familiarity with the cinematic sphere did not guarantee him artistic success. Nevertheless, he used the cinematic strategies of visual description to add meaning and imagination to his fiction …

The Alpha7 Integrin Subunit In Astrocytes Promotes Endothelial Blood-Brain Barrier Integrity, Zhihua Chen, Jack R Kelly, John E Morales, Raymond C Sun, Arpan De, Dean J Burkin, Joseph H Mccarty

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a vascular endothelial cell boundary that partitions the circulation from the central nervous system to promote normal brain health. We have a limited understanding of how the BBB is formed during development and maintained in adulthood. We used quantitative transcriptional profiling to investigate whether specific adhesion molecules are involved in BBB functions, with an emphasis on understanding how astrocytes interact with endothelial cells. Our results reveal a striking enrichment of multiple genes encoding laminin subunits as well as the laminin receptor gene Itga7, which encodes the alpha7 integrin subunit, in astrocytes. Genetic ablation of Itga7 …

Treatment strategies with a strong scientific rationale based on specific biomarkers are needed to improve outcomes in patients with advanced sarcomas. Suppression of cell cycle progression through reactivation of the tumor suppressor retinoblastoma (Rb) using CDK4/6 inhibitors is a potential avenue for novel targeted therapies in sarcomas that harbor intact Rb signaling. Here, we evaluated combination treatment strategies (sequential and concomitant) with the CDK4/6 inhibitor abemacicib to identify optimal combination strategies. Expression of Rb was examined in 1043 sarcoma tumor specimens, and 50% were found to be Rb-positive. Using in vitro and in vivo models, an effective 2-step sequential combination …

Disruption of KDM6A, a histone lysine demethylase, is one of the most common somatic alternations in bladder cancer. Insights into how KDM6A mutations affect the epigenetic landscape to promote carcinogenesis could help reveal potential new treatment approaches. Here, we demonstrated that KDM6A loss triggers an epigenetic switch that disrupts urothelial differentiation and induces a neoplastic state characterized by increased cell proliferation. In bladder cancer cells with intact KDM6A, FOXA1 interacted with KDM6A to activate genes instructing urothelial differentiation. KDM6A-deficient cells displayed simultaneous loss of FOXA1 target binding and genome-wide redistribution of the bZIP transcription factor ATF3, which in turn repressed …

Epidemic Highs And Lows: A Stochastic Diffusion Model For Active Cases, Luis F. Gordillo, Priscilla E. Greenwood, Dana Strong

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We derive a stochastic epidemic model for the evolving density of infective individuals in a large population. Data shows main features of a typical epidemic consist of low periods interspersed without breaks of various intensities and duration. In our stochastic differential model, a novel reproductive term combines a factor expressing the recent notion of ‘attenuated Allee effect’ and a capacity factor is controlling the size of the process. Simulation of this model produces sample paths of the stochastic density of infectives, which behave much like long-time Covid-19 case data of recent years. Writing the process as a stochastic diffusion allows …

A Literature Review Examining Broadening Participation In Upper Elementary Cs Education, Umar Shehzad, Mimi Recker, Jody Clarke-Midura

Publications

Despite proliferated efforts to integrate computer science in elementary education, there is a dearth of studies that synthesize the current state of CS education research in formal educational contexts, specifically in upper elementary classrooms. Further, while numerous studies have investigated approaches and strategies that broaden participation in computing, the majority of them focus on secondary and post-secondary settings. The present study uses a systematic literature review process to review research conducted with students in formal classroom settings in grades 4, 5, and 6 and published since 2013. We review the research through two questions: What are barriers to broadening participation …

Plantation Pasts, Plantation Futures: Resisting Zombie Water Infrastructures In Maui, Hawai'i, Kelly Kay, Chris Knudson, Alida Cantor

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sugar plantations have fundamentally shaped water use in Maui, Hawai’i for over 100 years, with tremendous resulting impacts on ecosystems and Native Hawaiian communities. In this paper, we build on literature on the plantationocene and the political lives of infrastructure to examine plantation irrigation infrastructure. We center Maui’s vast water conveyance ditch system as a means of understanding how infrastructure continues plantation logics into the present, considering both the physical ditches themselves as well as the laws and politics which support continued water extraction. We also consider infrastructural futures, highlighting ongoing efforts of communities seeking water justice via infrastructural control.

Transborder Literacies Of (In)Visibility, Sarah Gallo, Melissa Adams Corral

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

Drawing from an ethnography with mixed-status families residing in Mexico, we examine what we term transborder literacies of (in)visibility, or diasporic people's innovative interactions around texts that prepare them to move across incompatible mononational institutions divided by borders. Through close attention to the literacy practices families engaged in as they applied for their children's U.S. passports from Mexico, we demonstrate how these literacies were not just about expanding authentic ways of reading and writing to include both U.S. and Mexican ways, but instead required unique transborder literacies across mutually unintelligible, racializing mononational systems so that children could (re)access their rights …

Choosing Act Or Cbt: A Preliminary Test Of Incorporating Client Preferences For Depression Treatment With College Students, Carter H. Davis, Michael P. Twohig, Michael Levin

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background

Depression is a significant concern among college students, who suffer at higher rates and with greater severity than the general population. Online self-help could reduce the burden currently placed on college counseling centers, and programs based in cognitive behavioral therapies (CBTs) have a strong evidence base. However, online CBTs for depression often suffer from low adherence rates. An understudied method for improving adherence in this population is offering students a choice between various CBTs.

Methods

We conducted a randomized trial with 142 students with high levels of depression, with a subset of participants randomly receiving either traditional cognitive behavioral …

Since the early sixties, our view of radio galaxies and quasars has been drastically shaped by discoveries made thanks to observations of radio sources listed in the Third Cambridge Catalog and its revised version (3CR). However, the largest fraction of data collected to date on 3CR sources was performed with relatively old instruments, rarely repeated and/or updated. Importantly, the 3CR contains only objects located in the Northern Hemisphere, thus having limited access to new and innovative astronomical facilities. To mitigate these limitations, we present a new catalog of powerful radio sources visible from the Southern Hemisphere, extracted from the GLEAM …
