Evaluation Of A Story-Telling Approach To Educate Minority Populations About Inherited Cancer, Celestyn B. Angot Mar 2023

Evaluation Of A Story-Telling Approach To Educate Minority Populations About Inherited Cancer, Celestyn B. Angot

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Utilization of hereditary cancer genetic counseling and testing services is substantially lower among minority populations compared to white populations due, in part, to lower levels of awareness and knowledge. To help improve awareness, we designed a 7-minute video that uses storytelling to translate knowledge of genetic testing and hereditary cancer to individuals who have a personal history or family history of cancer. Consented participants were asked baseline questions about hereditary cancer and genetic testing, reviewed the video, and provided feedback on its content, understandability, and visual appeal during semi-structured interviews. Data were coded and analyzed to identify themes and determine …

Preclinical Perspectives On The Mechanisms Underlying The Therapeutic Actions Of Psilocybin In Psychiatric Disorders, Andreas B. Wulff, Charles D. Nichols, Scott M. Thompson Mar 2023

Preclinical Perspectives On The Mechanisms Underlying The Therapeutic Actions Of Psilocybin In Psychiatric Disorders, Andreas B. Wulff, Charles D. Nichols, Scott M. Thompson

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Psychedelic compounds have shown extraordinary potential in treating a wide range of neuropsychiatric disorders. Psilocybin, for example, has now been shown in several clinical trials to induce a rapid (within days) and persistent (3–12 months) improvement in human treatment-resistant depression and other neuropsychiatric conditions. Here we review the preclinical models and experimental approaches that have been used to study the neurobiological actions of psychedelic drugs. We further summarize the insights these studies have provided into the possible mechanisms underlying the induction of their therapeutic actions, including the receptors to which psychedelics bind and the second messenger signaling cascades that they …

Delayed Thoracodorsal Artery Perforator Free Flap For Calcaneal Degloving Injury Reconstruction, Mallorie L. Huff, Ahmed M. Mansour, Mamtha S. Raj, Robert J. Allen, Sean J. Wallace Mar 2023

Delayed Thoracodorsal Artery Perforator Free Flap For Calcaneal Degloving Injury Reconstruction, Mallorie L. Huff, Ahmed M. Mansour, Mamtha S. Raj, Robert J. Allen, Sean J. Wallace

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

The thoracodorsal artery perforator (TDAP) flap has a long vascular pedicle that is ideal for lower extremity reconstruction, but it generally relies on the presence of a dominant septocutaneous perforator vessel. Surgical delay optimizes flap survival by creating relative ischemia to augment perforator vessels. In this report, we describe the use of a delayed free TDAP flap in the setting of an absent dominant perforator vessel for the reconstruction of a calcaneal degloving injury. A 22-year-old actively smoking patient with a body mass index of 33.5 presented with a nonhealing left heel wound with overlying necrotic changes after traumatic degloving …

Thresholds Of Quantitative Swallowing Measures Following Intensive Prophylactic Therapy In Head And Neck Cancer, Deirdre Larsen Mar 2023

Thresholds Of Quantitative Swallowing Measures Following Intensive Prophylactic Therapy In Head And Neck Cancer, Deirdre Larsen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This retrospective, case-controlled study sought to identify salient features of swallowing physiology in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients and the threshold for features associating with increased dysphagia severity or decreased functional status. Quantitative measures of videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) were taken during three graduating liquid boluses and a paste bolus. Fifteen HNC subjects that received high frequency swallowing exercises (2 - 5 weekly sessions) during (chemo)radiation were compared pre- and(n = 15) or normal (n = 15) swallowing. HNC subjects were also stratified to compare those attending only pre- and(n = 8) to those also returning with dysphagia complaints …

Doing Death Work: A Mixed Method Examination Of Imprinted Events And Behavioral Responses Of Medical Examiner's Office Employees, Elizabeth L. Gilmore, Kevin Buckler Mar 2023

Doing Death Work: A Mixed Method Examination Of Imprinted Events And Behavioral Responses Of Medical Examiner's Office Employees, Elizabeth L. Gilmore, Kevin Buckler

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"This study provides a qualitative and quantitative data analysis from interviews of current and former employees of medical examiner offices. These employees’ current and former positions required that they arrive at scenes of natural, accidental, suicidal, undetermined, and homicidal deaths, document and retrieve the decedent(s), and assist in eviscerating the remains to aid forensic pathologists during autopsy procedures. The authors interviewed 14 current or past employees of different medical examiner offices to understand what they liked and disliked about this curious profession and aimed to understand professional struggles. Additionally, study participants answered questions about imprinted events, how they and colleagues …

Child Sex Abusers In Protestant Christian Churches: An Offender Typology, Andrew S. Denney Mar 2023

Child Sex Abusers In Protestant Christian Churches: An Offender Typology, Andrew S. Denney

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

Sexual abuse within religious settings has been the focus of prior research for over fifty years. However, most research has focused on the Roman Catholic Church, not Protestant Christian churches. Yet, Protestant Christian Churches are the most prominent religious institutions, both in the physical number of churches and total participants, across the United States. By examining 326 alleged instances of sexual abuse at or through activities provided by U.S. Protestant Christian churches, this study sought to create the first typology of sexual abusers within this setting. This study found that three types of offenders exist within these settings, (1) on-site …

Infidelity, Liability, And Violence, Jason Manning Mar 2023

Infidelity, Liability, And Violence, Jason Manning

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

Much criminal violence arises from conflict and is moralistic. The perpetrator is punishing someone for a perceived wrong. Liability refers to accountability for a wrong: Who exactly has to suffer punishment? Here I argue that violence arising from infidelity and sexual jealousy is a strategic research site for studying liability. When these matters trigger lethal violence, there is variation in who the perpetrator targets. Using detailed descriptions of US homicides, as well as the cross-cultural ethnographic literature, I describe and classify three patterns of liability: mate, rival, and dual. I conclude by suggesting sociological factors relevant to explaining these patterns …

“Title Ix Isn’T For You, It’S For The University”: Sexual Violence Survivors’ Experiences Of Institutional Betrayal In Title Ix Investigations, Katherine Lorenz, Rebecca Hayes, Cathrine Jacobsen Mar 2023

“Title Ix Isn’T For You, It’S For The University”: Sexual Violence Survivors’ Experiences Of Institutional Betrayal In Title Ix Investigations, Katherine Lorenz, Rebecca Hayes, Cathrine Jacobsen

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

Institutional betrayal occurs when an institution fails to appropriately respond to harm experienced by a member of the institution, such as by failing to act or by mishandling cases. The concept has been applied to higher education institution’s (HEI’s) response to students who experience sexual violence, particularly Title IX investigations, showing that institutional betrayal is common among student survivors. Yet, to our knowledge, institutional betrayal in HEI Title IX investigations has not been qualitatively explored. We conducted interviews of graduate and undergraduate student sexual violence survivors (n=21) who participated in a Title IX investigation at a U.S. HEI to understand …

Treating Criminal Justice-Involved Serious Mental Illness (Smi) Clients In The Community, Brittany Hood Mar 2023

Treating Criminal Justice-Involved Serious Mental Illness (Smi) Clients In The Community, Brittany Hood

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

With criminal justice-involved individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) at an all-time high in the criminal justice system, research on community mental health centers (CMHCs) demonstrates a lack of treatment for justice-involved persons. Scholars have argued that providing appropriate treatment to criminal justice-involved individuals with SMI could alleviate symptoms. Therefore improving the effectiveness of mental health treatment to reduce recidivism in this population is paramount. The current study used a qualitative approach to examine how community service providers perceived organizational-level variables and legal constraints to influence treatment decisions for justice-involved individuals with SMI. Findings suggest three critical implications for policy …

The Puzzle Of The Formation Of T8 Dwarf Ross 458c, Josefine Gaarn, Ben Burningham, Jacqueline K. Faherty, Channon Visscher, Mark S. Marley, Eileen C. Gonzales, Emily Calamari, Daniella Bardalez Gagliuffi, Roxana Lupu, Richard Freedman Mar 2023

The Puzzle Of The Formation Of T8 Dwarf Ross 458c, Josefine Gaarn, Ben Burningham, Jacqueline K. Faherty, Channon Visscher, Mark S. Marley, Eileen C. Gonzales, Emily Calamari, Daniella Bardalez Gagliuffi, Roxana Lupu, Richard Freedman

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

At the lowest masses, the distinction between brown dwarfs and giant exoplanets is often blurred and literature classifications rarely reflect the deuterium burning boundary. Atmospheric characterization may reveal the extent to which planetary formation pathways contribute to the population of very low mass brown dwarfs, by revealing whether their abundance distributions differ from those of the local field population or, in the case of companions, their primary stars. The T8 dwarf Ross 458c is a possible planetary-mass companion to a pair of M dwarfs, and previous work suggests that it is cloudy. We here present the results of the retrieval …

Morphological And Transcriptional Effects Of Crude Oil And Dispersant Exposure On The Marine Sponge Cinachyrella Alloclada, Yvain Desplat, Jacob F. Warner, Emily J. Blake, Nidhi Vijayan, Marie Cuvelier, Patricia Blackwelder, Jose V. Lopez Mar 2023

Morphological And Transcriptional Effects Of Crude Oil And Dispersant Exposure On The Marine Sponge Cinachyrella Alloclada, Yvain Desplat, Jacob F. Warner, Emily J. Blake, Nidhi Vijayan, Marie Cuvelier, Patricia Blackwelder, Jose V. Lopez

Biology Faculty Articles

Marine sponges play important roles in benthic ecosystems. More than providing shelter and food to other species, they help maintain water quality by regulating nitrogen and ammonium levels in the water, and bioaccumulate heavy metals. This system, however, is particularly sensitive to sudden environmental changes including catastrophic pollution event such as oil spills. Hundreds of oil platforms are currently actively extracting oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico. To test the vulnerability of the benthic ecosystems to oil spills, we utilized the Caribbean reef sponge, Cinachyrella alloclada, as a novel experimental indicator. We have exposed organisms to crude …

Nebraska Farmland Values And Cash Rental Rates In 2023, Jim Jansen, Jeffrey Stokes

Cornhusker Economics

The market value of agricultural land in Nebraska increased by 14% over the prior year to an average of US $3,835 per acre, according to the 2023 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey. This marks the second-largest increase in the market value of agricultural land in Nebraska since 2014 and the highest non-inflation-adjusted state-wide land value in the 45-year history of the survey.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Department of Agricultural Economics annually surveys land industry professionals across Nebraska, including appraisers, farm and ranch managers, agricultural bankers, and related industry professionals. Results from the survey are divided by land class and …

Love Hertz: Corporate Groups And Insolvency Forum Selection, John A. E. Pottow Mar 2023

Love Hertz: Corporate Groups And Insolvency Forum Selection, John A. E. Pottow

Law & Economics Working Papers

The Hertz bankruptcy got a lot of attention, including for its bizarre equity trading. A less heralded but more significant legal aspect of that insolvency, however, was its complex interaction of cross-border insolvency proceedings.

This article discusses the “centripetal” and “centrifugal” forces in the Hertz case that counselled a U.S.-based centralized solution for an international enterprise comprising over 10,000 branches centripetally but also accommodated centrifugal European resistance to subject directors to the consequences of filing their entities in a foreign jurisdiction. This not uncommon constellation of incentives required not a COMI shift but what this article terms a jurisdiction shift …
