Ferdinand De Susseur: The Known That Is Not Known About, Asmaa Hassan Shalash

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The studies that dealt with Su Sir’s thought and its truth were equal to the studies that dealt with his theory of language, in their abundance. Indeed, many of them were found to deal with Su Sir’s thought and theory under one research, and yet this linguist is still a subject of curiosity and suspicion by scholars; because he did not publish what he wrote, nor did he write what was published about him. Therefore, this research deems that Su Sir did not intend to put the concepts of the language that he studied in contrasting binaries, and perhaps this …

Manifestations Of Reification In The Iraq Novel: The Novel Of The Virgin Of Sinjar As A Model, Doaa Adel Abd Al-Kareem

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

Reification is a serious human problem that has touched the doors of our modem age, after its roots that were planted in the past were nourished on the remnants of ancient inhuman practices up to the prehistoric era of slavery, self-monopolization, and crushing human values, modem narrative studies, like other sciences, have discussed these phenomena, including the narration of the virgin of sinjar which talked about the objectification of woman and their transformation from a being enjoying human rights into a tool and a tool that benefits from them for the purposes of displaying morals, religion and human rights in …

Extroversion - Introversion Traits And Their Influence On The Humanistic Culture In Edward Albee’S The Zoo Story, Inam Hashim Hadi

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The social, political, and cultural scene of post-world war II America witnessed considerable changes where lack of communication, meaninglessness, solitude, class distinction, and other related issues prevailed, stripping man of his humanity. In the mid-twentieth century, dramatists including Edward Albee, among other writers, tried to revive a new vitalized social ideology to transform the current mode of human's thought whose effect exceeded the limits leading man to segregate himself from others. Albee was resentful of the cultural orientation during his time and he criticized the contemporary social standards in his attempt to sublimate human's life experiences partly as a self-healing …

Tauopathies are neurodegenerative diseases that involve the pathological accumulation of tau proteins; in this family are Alzheimer disease, corticobasal degeneration, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, among others. Hypothesizing that reducing this accumulation could mitigate pathogenesis, we performed a cross-species genetic screen targeting 6,600 potentially druggable genes in human cells and Drosophila. We found and validated 83 hits in cells and further validated 11 hits in the mouse brain. Three of these hits (USP7, RNF130, and RNF149) converge on the C terminus of Hsc70-interacting protein (CHIP) to regulate tau levels, highlighting the role of CHIP in maintaining tau proteostasis in the brain. …

The Mechanics Of Share Repurchases Or How I Stopped Worrying And Learned To Love Stock Buybacks, Richard A. Booth Mar 2023

The Mechanics Of Share Repurchases Or How I Stopped Worrying And Learned To Love Stock Buybacks, Richard A. Booth

Faculty Publications

Stock repurchases by issuing corporations have always been controversial. They have become even more so recently because of the perception that the excess funds used to finance them have come from tax cuts and other sources (such as government bailouts) that were intended to stimulate reinvestment or enhanced wages and benefits for workers. As a result, critics have proposed amendments to tax law that discourage buybacks (and possibly dividends as well). The theory is that the benefits of such distributions go mostly to executives (who are compensated in large part with equity) and to already wealthy stockholders. The controversy is …

Daily Posture Behavior Patterns Derived From Multitime-Scale Topic Models Using Wearable Triaxial Acceleration For Assessment Of Concern About Falling, Changhong Wang, Yu Wang, Haitao Zhao, Guanzheng Liu, Bijan Najafi

Center on Aging Staff Publications

Concern about falling is prevalent in older population. This condition would cause a series of adverse physical and psychological consequences for older adults' health. Traditional assessment of concern about falling is relied on self-reported questionnaires and thus is too subjective. Therefore, we proposed a novel multi-time-scale topic modelling approach to quantitatively evaluate concern about falling by analyzing triaxial acceleration signals collected from a wearable pendent sensor. Different posture segments were firstly recognized to extract their corresponding feature subsets. Then, each selected feature related to concern about falling was clustered into discrete levels as feature letters of artificial words in different …

Spontaneous Activity Patterns In Human Attention Networks Code For Hand Movements, Lu Zhang, Lorenzo Pini, Dohyun Kim, Gordon L Shulman, Maurizio Corbetta Mar 2023

Spontaneous Activity Patterns In Human Attention Networks Code For Hand Movements, Lu Zhang, Lorenzo Pini, Dohyun Kim, Gordon L Shulman, Maurizio Corbetta

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Recent evidence suggests that, in the absence of any task, spontaneous brain activity patterns and connectivity in the visual and motor cortex code for natural stimuli and actions, respectively. These "resting-state" activity patterns may underlie the maintenance and consolidation (replay) of information states coding for ecological stimuli and behaviors. In this study, we examine whether replay patterns occur in resting-state activity in association cortex grouped into high-order cognitive networks not directly processing sensory inputs or motor outputs. Fifteen participants (7 females) performed four hand movements during an fMRI study. Three movements were ecological. The fourth movement as control was less …

Propaganda: More Than Flawed Messaging, Cory Wimberly Mar 2023

Propaganda: More Than Flawed Messaging, Cory Wimberly

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Most of the recent work on propaganda in philosophy has come from a narrowly epistemological standpoint that sees it as flawed messaging that negatively impacts public reasonableness and deliberation. This article posits two problems with this approach: first, it obscures the full range of propaganda's activities; and second, it prevents effective ameliorative measures by offering an overly truncated assessment of the problems to be addressed. Following Ellul and Hyska, I argue that propaganda aims at shaping actions and not just beliefs, and that the propaganda activities that shape action include modifying beliefs but also much more. Examining this larger set …

Teaching Tip: A Teaching Module Illustrating Erp Item Value Automation, Anil Singh, Vikram Bhadauria, George Mangalaraj

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Large parts of the enterprise resource planning (ERP) processes are automated. One example is the item values in the sales order process. To execute a sales order, the ERP system applies a specific “find” strategy on a wide variety of data sources such as customer master, material master, and customer price-specific data tables, and extracts information such as customer class, discounts, and dates for computations of line items, namely, prices, discounts, and taxes. While completing their ERP assignments on the sales order process, students often see only the final sales order amount and ignore—and thereby fail to appreciate and understand—the …

Kdm6a Loss Triggers An Epigenetic Switch That Disrupts Urothelial Differentiation And Drives Cell Proliferation In Bladder Cancer, Hong Qiu, Jennifer K Bolzenius, Angela Halstead, Vivek Arora, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

UNLABELLED: Disruption of KDM6A, a histone lysine demethylase, is one of the most common somatic alternations in bladder cancer. Insights into how KDM6A mutations affect the epigenetic landscape to promote carcinogenesis could help reveal potential new treatment approaches. Here, we demonstrated that KDM6A loss triggers an epigenetic switch that disrupts urothelial differentiation and induces a neoplastic state characterized by increased cell proliferation. In bladder cancer cells with intact KDM6A, FOXA1 interacted with KDM6A to activate genes instructing urothelial differentiation. KDM6A-deficient cells displayed simultaneous loss of FOXA1 target binding and genome-wide redistribution of the bZIP transcription factor ATF3, which in turn …

N-terminal acetylation is a common eukaryotic protein modification that involves the addition of an acetyl group to the N-terminus of a polypeptide. This modification is largely performed by cytosolic N-terminal acetyltransferases (NATs). Most associate with the ribosome, acetylating nascent polypeptides co-translationally. In the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, exported effectors are thought to be translated into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), processed by the aspartic protease plasmepsin V and then N-acetylated, despite having no clear access to cytosolic NATs. Here, we used inducible gene deletion and post-transcriptional knockdown to investigate the primary ER-resident NAT candidate, Pf3D7_1437000. We found that it localizes to …
