Kolender’S Paper Earns Ohio Environmental Writing Award, James Owsley Boyd Mar 2023

Kolender’S Paper Earns Ohio Environmental Writing Award, James Owsley Boyd

Keep Up With the Latest News from the Law School (blog)

When a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, spilling hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals into the soil, water, and air, Zoe Kolender knew the cleanup efforts would be an arduous task. But she also knew something most people don’t—that environmental disasters like the Norfolk Southern derailment are treated differently depending on the areas in which they occur.

Kolender, a 3L at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, had been studying the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) while developing a paper for Professor India Thusi’s seminar in Critical Race Theory. CERCLA …

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation To The Angular Gyrus Modulates The Temporal Dynamics Of The Hippocampus And Entorhinal Cortex, Gillian Coughlan, Nichole R. Bouffard, Ali Golestani, Preston P. Thakral, Daniel L. Schacter, Cheryl Grady, Morris Moscovitch

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) delivered to the angular gyrus (AG) affects hippocampal function and associated behaviors (Thakral PP, Madore KP, Kalinowski SE, Schacter DL. Modulation of hippocampal brain networks produces changes in episodic simulation and divergent thinking. 2020a. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 117:12729-12740). Here, we examine if functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-guided TMS disrupts the gradient organization of temporal signal properties, known as the temporal organization, in the hippocampus (HPC) and entorhinal cortex (ERC). For each of 2 TMS sessions, TMS was applied to either a control site (vertex) or to a left AG target region (N …

Hematology/Oncology Articles

Although breast density decline with tamoxifen therapy is associated with greater therapeutic benefit, limited data suggest that endocrine symptoms may also be associated with improved breast cancer outcomes. However, it is unknown whether endocrine symptoms are associated with reductions in breast density after tamoxifen initiation. We evaluated treatment-associated endocrine symptoms and breast density change among 74 women prescribed tamoxifen in a 12-month longitudinal study. Treatment-associated endocrine symptoms and sound speed measures of breast density, assessed via novel whole breast ultrasound tomography (m/s), were ascertained before tamoxifen (T0) and at 1-3 (T1), 4-6 (T2), and 12 months (T3) after initiation. CYP2D6 …

Nationwide Results Of Microorganism Antigen Testing As A Component Of Preoperative Synovial Fluid Analysis., Krista O'Shaughnessey Toler, Pearl Ravindra Paranjape, Alex Mclaren, Brett Levine, Alvin Ong, Carl Deirmengian

Rothman Institute Papers

BACKGROUND: Antigen immunoassays to detect synovial fluid (SF) microorganisms have recently been made available for clinical use. The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of an SF microorganism antigen immunoassay detection (MID) panel, evaluate the panel's capability to detect microorganisms in the setting of culture-negative periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), and determine diagnostic predictive values of the MID panel for PJI.

METHODS: This study included 67,441 SF samples obtained from a hip or knee arthroplasty, from 2,365 institutions across the United States, submitted to 1 laboratory for diagnostic testing. All data were prospectively compiled and then …

Advanced Ensemble Modeling Method For Space Object State Prediction Accounting For Uncertainty In Atmospheric Density, Smriti Nandan Paul, Richard J. Licata, Piyush M. Mehta Mar 2023

Advanced Ensemble Modeling Method For Space Object State Prediction Accounting For Uncertainty In Atmospheric Density, Smriti Nandan Paul, Richard J. Licata, Piyush M. Mehta

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

For objects in the low Earth orbit region, uncertainty in atmospheric density estimation is an important source of orbit prediction error, which is critical for space traffic management activities such as the satellite conjunction analysis. This paper investigates the evolution of orbit error distribution in the presence of atmospheric density uncertainties, which are modeled using probabilistic machine learning techniques. The recently proposed "HASDM-ML," "CHAMP-ML," and "MSIS-UQ" machine learning models for density estimation (Licata and Mehta, 2022b; Licata et al., 2022b) are used in this work. The investigation is convoluted because of the spatial and temporal correlation of the atmospheric density …

A large sample of ground-based evapotranspiration (ET) measurements made in the United States, primarily from eddy covariance systems, were post-processed to produce a benchmark ET dataset. The dataset was produced primarily to support the intercomparison and evaluation of the OpenET satellite-based remote sensing ET (RSET) models and could also be used to evaluate ET data from other models and approaches. OpenET is a web-based service that makes field-delineated and pixel-level ET estimates from well-established RSET models readily available to water managers, agricultural producers, and the public. The benchmark dataset is composed of flux and meteorological data from a variety of …

Infinite-Dimensional Stochastic Transforms And Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space, Myung-Sin Song, Palle Jorgensen, James Feng Tian

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

By way of concrete presentations, we construct two infinite-dimensional transforms at the crossroads of Gaussian fields and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS), thus leading to a new infinite-dimensional Fourier transform in a general setting of Gaussian processes. Our results serve to unify existing tools from infinite-dimensional analysis.

Why Theorizing And Measuring Shared Experience In Descriptive Representation Is “A Mess Worth Making”, Christina Xydias Mar 2023

Why Theorizing And Measuring Shared Experience In Descriptive Representation Is “A Mess Worth Making”, Christina Xydias

Faculty Journal Articles

Jane Mansbridge’s (1999) “contingent ‘yes’” amplified a chorus of voices discussing the substantive and symbolic functions of historically marginalized groups’ presence in political office. In her essay, Mansbridge points to contexts of mistrust and uncrystallized interests as domains where presence enhances “adequate communication” and “innovative thinking” for these social groups (628). In this and many other accounts, the linchpin between descriptive and substantive representation for these functions is group members’ shared experiences, alternatively framed as the perspectives informed by those experiences. Shared experiences cannot and do not produce identical effects (they are filtered through many lenses), but they are widely …

An Ecological Systems Perspective On Individual Differences In Children's Performance On Measures Of Executive Function, Steven J. Holochwost, Deaven Winebrake, Eleanor D. Brown, Keith R. Happeney, Nicholas J. Wagner, W. Roger Mills-Koonce

Psychology Faculty Publications

The predictive validity of performance on cognitive-behavioral measures of executive function (EF) suggests that these measures index children's underlying capacity for self-regulation. In this paper, we apply ecological systems theory to critically evaluate this assertion. We argue that as typically administered, standard measures of EF do not index children's underlying, trait-like capacity for EF, but rather assess their state-like EF performance at a given point in time and in a particular (and often quite peculiar) context. This underscores the importance of disentangling intra-individual (i.e., state-like) and inter-individual (trait-like) differences in performance on these measures and understanding how factors at various …

Strengthening The Ti/Tin Interface Against Shear Failure With Al Dopants: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Nisha Dhariwal, Abu Shama Mohammad Miraz, W. J. Meng, Collin D. Wick

Faculty Publications

The impact of Al doping on the stability and shear strength of the Ti/TiN interface was investigated using a newly developed modified embedded atom model interatomic potential. The model was parameterized to the interfacial properties of pure Al, TiAl and AlN binaries as well as TiAlN ternary system. The results of the new model are in reasonably good agreement with those obtained using Density Functional Theory and experimental data from the literature. A Ti/TiN system with a misfit dislocation network present on the Ti layer adjacent to the TiN interface was chosen for doping because of its low interfacial energy. …

The Discovery of Superconducting Nickelates Reignited Hope for Elucidating the High-Tc Superconductivity Mechanism in Isostructural Cuprates. While the Superconducting Gap Opens Up on a Single Band of the Quasi-2D Fermi Surface in the Cuprates, the Nickelates Are Known to Have a 3D Nature of an Electronic Structure with a Multi-Band. This Raises a Serious Question About the Role of the 2D Nature for the High-Tc Superconductivity. Here, Employing GW + Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT), We Report the Kondo Effect Driven by the Strong Correlation of Nd-4f and Ni-3d Electrons Emerging at Low Temperature. the Kondo Effect Modifies …
