Spring Broke, Jase Graves

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

When my three semi-grown daughters were young (and since I work in the lucrative world of public education), we’d spend our spring break holidays riding bikes to the park, making dad-sized pillow forts in the living room, and raiding the gift shop at the zoo.

The Materiality Of Waka And Ikebana: Locating Ecological Relationships Between Delivery And Arrangement, Bianca Oliveira Mar 2023

The Materiality Of Waka And Ikebana: Locating Ecological Relationships Between Delivery And Arrangement, Bianca Oliveira

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Rhetorical applications of delivery and arrangement have grown to reflect the global interconnectedness of cultures, bodies, and material objects. Informed by rhetorical and ecological approaches to delivery and arrangement (Edbauer Rice; Lambke;), this project performs a rhetorical and ecological analysis of ikebana (Japanese flower arrangements) and waka (Classical Japanese poetry) by Meishu-Sama and Saigyō Hōshi. Waka and ikebana, as compositional modes, reveal an interpolation of delivery and arrangement that invites both composer and audience to embody nature. As such, this project examines the visual-material and sonic rhetorics of waka and ikebana in order to discover how delivery and arrangement affect …

To Ask Or Not To Ask? Dynamic Systems Perspective On Help Seeking In An Introductory Statistics Classroom, Bradley W. Bergey Mar 2023

To Ask Or Not To Ask? Dynamic Systems Perspective On Help Seeking In An Introductory Statistics Classroom, Bradley W. Bergey

Publications and Research

Student-generated questions are an important mechanism for learning and self-regulation, yet their scarcity in classroom discourse points to a need to understand how students decide to ask or withhold their questions. This study examined how 12 graduate students in an introductory statistics course made decisions about asking questions during whole group instruction. Help seeking decisions were framed as arising from a dynamic system of a student’s situated role identity as a class participant. Qualitative analysis of post-class interviews illustrated the highly contextual, dynamic nature of students’ decisions to ask or withhold questions. Analyses revealed an array of microdecisions that involved …

Musicology Colloquium: Musical Representation And Advocacy Through Mariachi Consultancies, Latin American And Iberian Institute, Lauryn Salazar

LAII Events

In this presentation, I explore how my research on mariachi music has been used in terms of the musical and visual representation of the mariachi tradition through my consultancies with Disney Pixar’s Coco and the 2022 USPS Mariachi Stamps. As an applied ethnomusicologist, I primarily focus on how the mariachi tradition can be used to uplift the Latino(a) community, mainly through access to higher education. Having served as a consultant for the above projects, I directly influenced the representation of the mariachi tradition, which has given it worldwide attention.

Dr. Lauryn Salazaris an Associate Professor of Musicology and Director …

Gender Differences In Personality Dysfunction And Aggression In A Sample Of At-Risk Youth, Chloe O'Dell Mar 2023

Gender Differences In Personality Dysfunction And Aggression In A Sample Of At-Risk Youth, Chloe O'Dell

Master's Theses

Youth with antisocial and borderline traits in adolescence have been found more likely to commit violence and experience negative outcomes later in life. There is evidence for gender differences in the manifestations of dysfunctional personality features (antisocial and borderline traits) and functions of aggression, but little research has sought to assess unique gender differences that may help unravel the sequelae of personality dysfunction in youth. Accordingly, this exploratory study examines gender differences in associations between antisocial features, borderline features, and proactive and reactive functions of aggression in a sample of at-risk youth. Four hundred and sixty-four adolescents (Mage = …

BACKGROUND: Selective IgA deficiency (SIgAD) is the most prevalent inborn errors of immunity with almost unknown etiology. This study aimed to investigate the clinical diagnostic and prognostic values of lymphocyte subsets and function in symptomatic SIgAD patients.

METHODS: A total of 30 available SIgAD patients from the Iranian registry and 30 age-sex-matched healthy controls were included in the present study. We analyzed B and T cell peripheral subsets and T cell proliferation assay by flow cytometry in SIgAD patients with mild and severe clinical phenotypes.

RESULTS: Our results indicated a significant increase in naïve and transitional B cells and a …

Design And Analysis Of High Performance Magnetic Gears For Magnetomechanical Thrusters, Ho Yin Wong Mar 2023

Design And Analysis Of High Performance Magnetic Gears For Magnetomechanical Thrusters, Ho Yin Wong

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is devoted to investigating the performance potential of coaxial radial flux modulating magnetic gears for use in propulsive thruster applications. The research has focused on studying magnetic gear designs suitable for use in electric aircraft drivetrains and electric boat thrusters. Consequent pole, flux concentration and Halbach rotor magnetic gear typologies have been analyzed and compared with respect to their torque density performance for the first time. It is shown that the Halbach rotor magnetic gear holds the greatest potential with respect to achieving volumetric and mass torque densities parity with an equivalent mechanical gear.

A high volumetric torque …

Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones, But Will Comments Ever Hurt Me? : A Burkean Analysis Of Cancel Culture In Social Media Spaces, Kaylin Lane

Theses and Dissertations

In the modern social media era, “cancel culture” is a growing phenomenon used to hold public figures accountable for perceived wrongdoings. But who gets to cancel these celebrities? And how does someone get canceled? The concept of “cancel culture” has often been discussed in the past in the sense that the United States is a culture that is prone to want to cancel others. In my study, I am looking at the fact that there is a desire to cancel a perceived wrongdoer from an online space that is functioning as its own individual culture. The terms used to describe …

Port-Of-Entry Simulation Model For Potential Wait Time Reduction And Air Quality Improvement: A Case Study At The Gateway International Bridge In Brownsville, Texas, Usa, Benjamin Stewart, Hiram Moya, Amit U. Raysoni, Esmeralda Mendez, Matthew Vechione

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The mathematical study known as queueing theory has recently become a major point of interest for many government agencies and private companies for increasing efficiency. One such application is vehicle queueing at an international port-of-entry (POE). When queueing, fumes from idling vehicles negatively affect the overall health and well-being of the community, especially the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents that work at the POEs. As such, there is a need to analyze and optimize the border crossing queuing operations to minimize wait times and number of vehicles in the queue and, thus, reduce the vehicle emissions. For this …
