Eelgrass creates critical coastal habitats worldwide and fulfills essential ecosystem functions as a foundation seagrass. Climate warming and disease threaten eelgrass, causing mass mortalities and cascading ecological impacts. Subtidal meadows are deeper than intertidal and may also provide refuge from the temperature-sensitive seagrass wasting disease. From cross-boundary surveys of 5761 eelgrass leaves from Alaska to Washington and assisted with a machine-language algorithm, we measured outbreak conditions. Across summers 2017 and 2018, disease prevalence was 16% lower for subtidal than intertidal leaves; in both tidal zones, disease risk was lower for plants in cooler conditions. Even in subtidal meadows, which are …

Paper, Papermaking & The History Of Libraries, Patrick F. Roughen Jr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article traces the history of the relationship of papermaking and paper to libraries over time. Paper was first made in China and is traditionally considered one of that nation’s four greatest inventions, along with gun powder, printing, and the compass. Papermaking was often associated with archives in its early development in China, as well as when it was introduced to Japan, where it came to be a part of some Shinto and Buddhist temples, and later governmental agencies. Under Islam, the availability of paper was linked to increased literacy and growth of libraries. In early modern Europe, before the …

Wildfire frequency has increased in the Western US over recent decades, driven by climate change and a legacy of forest management practices. Consequently, human structures, health, and life are increasingly at risk due to wildfires. Furthermore, wildfire smoke presents a growing hazard for regional and national air quality. In response, many scientific tools have been developed to study and forecast wildfire behavior, or test interventions that may mitigate risk. In this study, we present a retrospective analysis of 1 month of the 2020 Northern California wildfire season, when many wildfires with varying environments and behavior impacted regional air quality. We …

Eliminating Barriers To Prosthetic Use Following Lower Extremity Amputation, Matthew Laskovy, Graham Long, Samuel Osei, Jonathon Murdock, Diane Studzinski, Rose E. Callahan, Otto W. Brown
Conference Presentation Abstracts
OBJECTIVES: Approximately 60,000 lower extremity amputations (LEA) are performed annually in the United States and 38%-55% of those individuals are fitted for a prosthesis. The average price of a lower extremity prosthetic device alone is $10,000, not including the associated costs of physical therapy and prosthetic fitting and maintenance. The most important factor influencing quality of life for individuals who have undergone LEA is the ability to ambulate with a prosthesis. The goal of our study was to investigate characteristics of individuals who abandon use of their prosthesis following LEA and identify any modifiable factors that may increase long-term successful …

Providing method descriptions that are more detailed than currently available in typical peer reviewed journals has been identified as an actionable area for improvement. In the biochemical and cell biology space, this need has been met through the creation of new journals focused on detailed protocols and materials sourcing. However, this format is not well suited for capturing instrument validation, detailed imaging protocols, and extensive statistical analysis. Furthermore, the need for additional information must be counterbalanced by the additional time burden placed upon researchers who may be already overtasked. To address these competing issues, this white paper describes protocol templates …

A prior study showed that rhythmic, but not arrhythmic, 12 Hz stimulation of the median nerve (MNS) entrained the sensorimotor cortex EEG signal and found that 10 Hz MNS improved tics in Tourette syndrome (TS). However, no control condition was tested, and stimulation blocks lasted only 1 min. We set out to replicate the TS results and to test whether tic improvement occurs by the proposed cortical entrainment mechanism. Preregistration was completed at ClinicalTrials.gov, under number NCT04731714. Thirty-two people with TS, age 15-64, completed two study visits with repeated MNS on and off blocks in random order, one visit for …

N6-methyladenosine (m6A), one of the most prevalent mRNA modifications in eukaryotes, plays a critical role in modulating both biological and pathological processes. However, it is unknown whether mutant p53 neomorphic oncogenic functions exploit dysregulation of m6A epitranscriptomic networks. Here, we investigate Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS)-associated neoplastic transformation driven by mutant p53 in iPSC-derived astrocytes, the cell-of-origin of gliomas. We find that mutant p53 but not wild-type (WT) p53 physically interacts with SVIL to recruit the H3K4me3 methyltransferase MLL1 to activate the expression of m6A reader YTHDF2, culminating in an oncogenic phenotype. Aberrant YTHDF2 upregulation markedly hampers expression of multiple m6A-marked tumor-suppressing …
Will Digital Fashion Be The New Normal In The Metaverse Era: Examining Consumers’ Perceptions Of Digital Fashion, Yanbo Zhang
Will Digital Fashion Be The New Normal In The Metaverse Era: Examining Consumers’ Perceptions Of Digital Fashion, Yanbo Zhang
LSU Master's Theses
Digital fashion might bring an innovative and revolutionary answer to address environmental and social issues in the textile and apparel industry because it could simultaneously deliver sustainability and fashionability. To stay in the lead in the fashion kingdom and maintain innovativeness, luxury fashion brands are embracing digital fashion. Instead of constantly balancing or trading off between exclusive values and accessibility, luxury brands could enhance both through digital fashion items. As such, investigating consumers’ perceptions and evaluations of digital fashion in general and luxury brands’ digital fashion in specific is critical to fueling digital fashion. Accordingly, the current research has twofold …

Scale-Up Of Perovskite Oxides For Conversion Of Co2 To Co Through Reverse Water-Gas Shift Chemical Looping, Hanzhong Shi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
CO2 conversion to CO has the benefit of further conversion to hydrocarbon-based fuels and chemicals. Due to CO2 being an important greenhouse gas, its conversion to CO and an increase of the carbon cycling will help reduce the greenhouse effect. Reverse water-gas shift chemical looping (RWSG-CL) is a two-step process that can be employed for the conversion of CO2 to CO. The first step involves partial reduction of oxygen by hydrogen to form oxygen vacant oxide, and the second step is the conversion of CO2 to CO over these partially reduced materials to regain their original structures. The RWSG-CL process …
Role Of Hla-Drb1 Fucosylation In Anti-Melanoma Immunity, Daniel K. Lester
Role Of Hla-Drb1 Fucosylation In Anti-Melanoma Immunity, Daniel K. Lester
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Melanoma is the one of the most lethal skin malignancies due to its ability to rapidly metastasize and evade the immune system. One factor that influences melanoma’s ability to metastasize and evade the immune system is the tumor microenvironment. The tumor microenvironment is a complex ecosystem that consists of melanoma cells interacting with different proteins and cell types such as cytokines, extra cellular matrix proteins, and various immune cells. While different immune cells can have various implications in the tumor microenvironment, some tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) have the potential to suppress these tumors. Recent therapeutic strategies aim to enhance TILs …
Diet And Salivary Microbiome On Cardiovascular Risk And Glycemic Control In Participants With And Without Type 1 Diabetes: The Cacti Study, Tiantian Pang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: The prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has been increasing drastically in the United States. People with T1DM are at a higher risk of developing diabetes-related complications, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). Diet is one of the most modifiable factors and healthy eating could reduce CVD risk among individuals with T1DM. The current 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans focus on overall healthy eating patterns rather than individual foods and nutrients. A healthy dietary pattern or high-quality diet can be measured by diet quality indexes, and generally contains minimal ultra-processed foods (UPF). Although substantial evidence has linked poor diet quality …
Conformational Dynamics And Free Energy Studies Of Dna And Other Biomolecules, Paul B. Orndorff
Conformational Dynamics And Free Energy Studies Of Dna And Other Biomolecules, Paul B. Orndorff
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work uses molecular dynamics simulations and enhanced sampling methods to investigate both the qualitative and quantitative properties of biomolecular systems. Conformational dynamics are critical in the study of biomolecular systems. Application of computer simulations to study dynamics of biomolecular systems allows for motions to be readily investigated at a resolution not possible in experimental techniques. In this work, the dynamics of uracil damaged and undamaged DNA is studied via molecular dynamics simulations. Uracil results in DNA from either misincorporation in the replication process or through spontaneous deamination of cytosine, and its presence in DNA can lead to mutations in …

The subject of the role of Ismaʿilite dogma in the decline of Islamic doctrines of jurisprudence is of great importance. From a historical and critical perspective, it is necessary to revise all the assumptions relating to this subject. On the one hand, the biographical and historical sources Malikites and achaʿrites concerning the history of Tunisia (Afriqiya) in the Middle Ages insist on the persecution practiced by the Fatimides against the Malikites and their thoughts. On the other side, there are Ismaʿilites and Shiʿites references whose Ismaiʿlites adherents are often presented as being tolerant with other doctrines in Tunisia, which has …

The Moroccan administrative organization until the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, before the imposition of the international protection system on it, was a spatial division according to the vastness and density of the population. Most of those supervising its organization were leaders appointed from notables and notables in this field. This situation continued to the extent of imposing the French protectorate on Morocco, which the protection administration will exploit to its advantage by imposing new administrative frameworks belonging to it to establish its colonial control. This is what we will try to focus on in this …

Moroccan poetics has taken multiple paths that have embodied transformations in its history that have touched the essence of the structure of poetry. The most important transformations are perhaps those that affected the structure of Arabic poetry in Morocco between the Wattasid and Saadian eras. Arabic poetry in Morocco will adhere to the origins of the Arabic poem in its clearest doctrines with the Saadian period, thus realizing the link between Moroccan poetry and oriental poetry in the times of its prosperity, and circumventing what the structure of the Arabic poem in the Morocco in the era of Al-Wattasin reached …

This paper explores the issue of the reconciliation between faith and reason in the theological thought of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba. It attempts to elucidate the dynamics of this reconciliation by scrutinizing Koranic texts, the prophetic tradition, consensus and reasoning in order to know God and have faith in Him. Herein, it worth mentioning that these constraints are part of a general principle called the lightness and heaviness principle; it is a principle that governs the combination of the basic sounds (consonants) at the root level, as it governs the combination of vowels with one …
