Developing And Analyzing An Explicit Unconditionally Stable Finite Element Scheme For An Equivalent Bérenger’S Pml Model, Yunqing Huang, Jichun Li, Xin Liu
Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research
The original Bérenger’s perfectly matched layer (PML) was quite effective in simulating wave propagation problem in unbounded domains. But its stability is very challenging to prove. Later, some equivalent PML models were developed by Bécache and Joly [ESAIM: M2AN 36 (2002) 87–119] and their stabilities were established. Hence studying and developing efficicent numerical methods for solving those equivalent PML models are needed and interesting. Here we propose a novel explicit unconditionally stable finite element scheme to solve an equivalent Bérenger’s PML model. Both the stability and convergence analysis are proved for the proposed scheme. Numerical results justifying the theoretical …
The Caregiving Practices Of Korean-American Families: A Descriptive Study Using An Ethnographic Approach, Boas J. Yu
The Caregiving Practices Of Korean-American Families: A Descriptive Study Using An Ethnographic Approach, Boas J. Yu
Dissertations
This ethnographic study examined caregiving practices of Korean-American families, using interpretive approach and analysis. The findings were categorized into caregiving as burden, stress, career, and cultural caregiving. The identified themes of caregiving as burden, stress, and career invariably impacted the caregiving; but the undercurrent and persistent main theme in those aspects of Korean-American caregiving was their cultural context of caregiving. The cultural context in which one functions as a caregiver had an important influence in the practice of family caregiving.
In this study, the cultural caregiving in seven Korean-American caregivers was influenced by immigration to the US as well as …
Objective Physical Activity And Sleep Characteristics Measurements Using A Triaxial Accelerometer In Eight Year Olds, Susan A. Harrington
Objective Physical Activity And Sleep Characteristics Measurements Using A Triaxial Accelerometer In Eight Year Olds, Susan A. Harrington
Dissertations
Secular trends demonstrate that young children are less active and sleep less. Inequity in an individual's energy balance is known to have poor health outcomes. Academic achievement, academic behavior, and weight status are proxy indicators for health and psychosocial outcomes in this study. Current guidelines in place for sleep and physical activity in childhood are the result of data collected in the form of self-reports. Quantification and qualification of physical activity dimensions and sleep characteristics are essential not only for the purpose of clearly establishing parameters but also for the intent of verifying optimal health outcomes and evaluating interventions related …

Brock, Joan, Sophia Maier Garcia
Bronx Jewish History Project
Joan Brock, born 1943, grew up on Bryant Avenue between 173 and 174 Streets in the Bronx. The East Bronx was considered poorer than the West Bronx, split by the Grand Concourse. Both of her parents were born and raised in New York, and they met while they were both working in a tea factory. Her father would get into the business of selling vending machines until Brock was 13 and he bought a hardware store. Her mother never worked after marrying except to help her husband with the store.
Brock describes the neighborhood as predominantly Jewish and Italian, though …

Effecting Free Exercise And Equal Protection, Laura Portuondo
Effecting Free Exercise And Equal Protection, Laura Portuondo
Duke Law Journal
There is an emerging discrepancy in free exercise and equal protection law. For decades, the Supreme Court has maintained that a law’s effects on a protected group are usually insufficient to trigger heightened scrutiny under either the Free Exercise or Equal Protection Clause. This longstanding rule has rendered it virtually impossible to challenge facially neutral laws on constitutional race, sex, and religious discrimination grounds, even where such laws inflict substantial harms on protected groups. Recent free exercise decisions, however, have abandoned this traditional barrier to enforcing constitutional equality rights. In doing so, they have subverted the usual rule that a …
Not Up For Deliberation: Expanding The Peña-Rodriguez Protection To Cover Jury Bias Against Lgbtq+ Individuals, Brett V. Ries
Not Up For Deliberation: Expanding The Peña-Rodriguez Protection To Cover Jury Bias Against Lgbtq+ Individuals, Brett V. Ries
Duke Law Journal
Discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals persists within the United States criminal justice system, which is no surprise given the history of LGBTQ+ discrimination in the United States. Evidence of jurors convicting LGBTQ+ defendants—or, in some extreme cases, sentencing them to death—because of the defendant’s queer identity is especially concerning.
Standing in the way of protecting LGBTQ+ defendants from LGBTQ+ bias in jury deliberations is Federal Rule of Evidence 606(b), which prohibits defendants from using juror testimony regarding jury deliberations to impeach the jury’s verdict. However, in 2017, the Supreme Court in Peña-Rodriguez v. Colorado provided an exception to this “no-impeachment rule” …

BACKGROUND: Music therapy is a standard palliative care service in many pediatric and adult hospitals; however, most research has focused on the use of music to improve psychosocial dimensions of health, without considering biological dimensions. This study builds on prior work examining psychosocial mechanisms of action underlying an Active Music Engagement (AME) intervention, designed to help manage emotional distress and improve positive health outcomes in young children with cancer and parents (caregivers), by examining its effects on biomarkers of stress and immune function.
METHODS: This two-group randomized controlled trial (R01NR019190) is designed to examine biological mechanisms of effect and dose-response …

The Association Between Comorbidities And Self-Care Of Heart Failure: A Cross-Sectional Study, Kyoung Suk Lee, Debra K. Moser, Kathleen Dracup
Nursing Faculty Publications
Background Because heart failure (HF) is a debilitating chronic cardiac condition and increases with age, most patients with HF experience a broad range of coexisting chronic morbidities. Comorbidities present challenges for patients with HF to successfully perform self-care, but it is unknown what types and number of comorbidities influence HF patients’ self-care. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the number of cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular conditions are associated with HF self-care.
Methods Secondary data analysis was performed with 590 patients with HF. The number of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular conditions was calculated using the list of conditions in the …

"As the director of both the creative writing and rhetoric and composition programs at Chapman University, a mid-sized private university serving 150+ majors as well as 1000+ general education students, it has now become a common and expected occurrence to have both students and contingent faculty come to my office expressing anxiety over course content. While the larger conversation about difficult content and trigger warnings is not new, the sudden need for urgently scheduled meetings with me did not begin until the COVID-19 Pandemic and our move to remote instruction. This seems to coincide with the increase of online and …
The Seven Chambers Of Prince Prospero, Elliot Paul Butler
The Seven Chambers Of Prince Prospero, Elliot Paul Butler
Theses and Dissertations
The Seven Chambers of Prince Prospero is a multi-movement programmatic work inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. In Poe’s short story, Prince Prospero throws a lavish masquerade within his castle while the world outside suffers a deadly plague referred to as the “Red Death.” In Prospero’s castle exist seven peculiar chambers, each one a different color, in which partygoers mingle and celebrate life in the face of death. In this piece, each of the seven rooms are depicted with short character pieces, concluding with a musical interpretation of the dramatic narrative described in Poe’s short …

Concerto For' Smacken, Zachary Jinpui Noland
Theses and Dissertations
Concerto for ‘Smacken was written for Sam Macken, a bassoon Ph.D. candidate at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Dedicated to our time in high school as well as college together, this composition focuses on displaying both Sam’s virtuosity as a bassoonist in addition to my emerging compositional style rooted in both the jazz and classical tradition. Movement I, Ursinae, is a slow ballad that heavily draws upon neo-romantic and jazz styles. Ursinae begins with an abstraction of an F minor chord that slowly materializes into a steady pulsating beat. Counterpoint plays a heavy role in different sections of the composition in …
Bioinformatic Analysis Predicts Microglial Dysfunction In Murine Aging, Amadu Idrisa Jalloh
Bioinformatic Analysis Predicts Microglial Dysfunction In Murine Aging, Amadu Idrisa Jalloh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Age-related disease is a growing concern as the global geriatric population increases. Neurodegenerative diseases scale unfavorably in prevalence with aging and inflict disastrous consequences to human health and well-being. These disorders are challenging to investigate because they arise from complex molecular origins. The neuroimmune system is a common factor among these diseases and microglia play an important role in maintaining homeostasis in the central nervous system. Aging progressively impairs microglia by decreasing their ability to adapt and respond to noxious environmental stimuli or injury. Microglial dysfunction aggravates neurodegenerative pathology when microglia are unable to regulate neuroinflammation effectively. We investigated aging …

L2 Writer Identity Construction In Academic Written Discourse: A Multi-Case Study, Beibei Ren
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Writer identity has gradually become a focus in writing scholarship in recent years. From a social constructivist lens, writer identity is not optional; it resides in all texts. And it is a construct that does not exist in a vacuum, but is shaped by the sociocultural and academic context, and simultaneously individual writers agentively selected from the socially available repertoire to construct their identities in text. Departing from social constructivism, this study adopted Ivanic’s (1998) conceptualization of writer identity, which consists of autobiographical self, discoursal self, self as author and possibilities for selfhood, and highlighted the role of agency in …

Always A Suspect: Law Enforcement’S Use Of Location History Data In Criminal Investigations, Aaron A. Bengart
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog
Imagine taking your dog on a walk around the neighborhood or visiting an ill parent in a nursing home and suddenly being considered a prime suspect in a serious criminal investigation. This has happened to a multitude of people over the past few years as law enforcement has increasingly used Location History data to identify perpetrators of criminal activity in every US state. For example, Zachary McCoy found himself as a suspect in a local home invasion simply for riding his bike past the house at issue multiple times on the day of the invasion. Consequently, Mr. McCoy felt obligated …

Facial Recognition Law: Why Should We Care?, Xueyang Peng
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog
What if you are a lawyer and you would like to spend an evening enjoying your favorite artist’s concert at the Radio City Music Hall? Or a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden? The first thing you should check is not the ticket price, but rather whether you, or your law firm, has made the MSG blacklist. Even though for years, the owner of MSG has been using the blacklist to exclude its enemies (and their associates) from setting foot in any MSG-owned venue, the facial recognition technology (“FRT”) just brought this practice to a new level.

Queer Psycho And The He Circus: Applying Queering, Magic, And More-Than-Human Theories To Immersive Visual Story Worlds As An Antidote To Late Capitalism, Eleanor Dare, Dylan Yamada-Rice
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Abstract Two immersive visual story worlds (IVS), Queer Psycho and HE Circus, are at the center of this article, one made by each of us. Individually we found our works necessitated the development of new frameworks for IVS construction, namely (1) Brechtian a-effect and queering, and (2) magic and more-than-human theories. These new framings were needed to realize our desire to use IVS to create spaces of active resistance from psychological harm imposed by political and ableist structures designed with rigid ways of seeing the world through straight/neoliberal lenses. When both story worlds and their frameworks are viewed side-by-side, they …

A Musical Debt Repaid With Interest: Haydn’S “Farewell” Symphony, Clementi’S Piano Sonata, Opus 25/5, And Haydn’S Piano Trio, Hob. Xv: 26, James S. Mackay
HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America
In 1772, Joseph Haydn composed his Farewell Symphony, so named because of the elaborate ruse of its closing movement, in which the performers depart one by one, leaving two violinists to complete the movement on their own. This eccentric finale, though justly famous, has overshadowed the equally bold and tonally unusual opening movement, in which Haydn bypasses the relative major in the exposition, instead concluding this section in the minor dominant. This tonal decision, though common in C. P. E. Bach (whose music Haydn knew and admired), was exceedingly rare in Haydn’s output, and represents a unique tonal experiment among …

BACKGROUND: While the majority of research on postpartum depressive and anxious symptoms has focused on mothers, a growing body of research suggests a need to understand the role of the partner's health and relationship quality as predictors of postpartum maternal depression, while also better understanding correlates of partner or paternal depression in the postpartum period. The purpose of the current study is to evaluate mother and partner stress, anxiety, mood, infant care support, and relationship quality as predictors of perinatal depressive and anxious symptoms in first time mothers and partners during the postpartum hospital stay.
METHODS: First time parent couples …

The pannexin 2 channel (PANX2) participates in multiple physiological processes including skin homeostasis, neuronal development, and ischemia-induced brain injury. However, the molecular basis of PANX2 channel function remains largely unknown. Here, we present a cryo-electron microscopy structure of human PANX2, which reveals pore properties contrasting with those of the intensely studied paralog PANX1. The extracellular selectivity filter, defined by a ring of basic residues, more closely resembles that of the distantly related volume-regulated anion channel (VRAC) LRRC8A, rather than PANX1. Furthermore, we show that PANX2 displays a similar anion permeability sequence as VRAC, and that PANX2 channel activity is inhibited …

Identifying tumor-cell-specific markers and elucidating their epigenetic regulation and spatial heterogeneity provides mechanistic insights into cancer etiology. Here, we perform snRNA-seq and snATAC-seq in 34 and 28 human clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) specimens, respectively, with matched bulk proteogenomics data. By identifying 20 tumor-specific markers through a multi-omics tiered approach, we reveal an association between higher ceruloplasmin (CP) expression and reduced survival. CP knockdown, combined with spatial transcriptomics, suggests a role for CP in regulating hyalinized stroma and tumor-stroma interactions in ccRCC. Intratumoral heterogeneity analysis portrays tumor cell-intrinsic inflammation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) as two distinguishing features of tumor …

We propose a multi-scale hybridized topic modeling method to find hidden topics from transcribed interviews more accurately and more efficiently than traditional topic modeling methods. Our multiscale hybridized topic modeling method (MSHTM) approaches data at different scales and performs topic modeling in a hierarchical way utilizing first a classical method, Nonnegative Matrix Factorization, and then a transformer-based method, BERTopic. It harnesses the strengths of both NMF and BERTopic. Our method can help researchers and the public better extract and interpret the interview information. Additionally, it provides insights for new indexing systems based on the topic level. We then deploy our …
