Teaching Price And Income Elasticities Of Demand Using Excel And Federal Reserve Economic Data, Tennecia Dacass, Elif B. Dilden
Economics Faculty Scholarship
This paper describes an assignment designed for use in an undergraduate Principles of Economics course. The assignment is a pedagogical tool that encourages collaborative problem-solving and the use of recent up-to-date data from the Federal Reserve Economics Data (FRED) to compute and analyze the price and income elasticities of demand. This tool is an efficient way for undergraduate economics students to understand the price and income elasticity of demand, gain valuable experience using public datasets, and develop their computer skills without taking classes outside of the economics major.

Why Science Can't Prevent Climate Change: Philosophical Approaches To Creating Societal Shifts, Charlotte Britt
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
We live in a society that is consumed with consuming. An inability to escape the urge to obtain more possessions is ever-increasing. Every aspect of our lives is surrounded by product placement with the goal of creating the false narrative that you are lacking something that will if obtained, add to the value of your life and bring you a step closer to becoming the person you long to be. This never-ending necessity to spend is matched with an excruciating pull to accumulate wealth in order to feed these desires. This commodification of our every move and existence is having …
Developing Tools For Introducing Modifications Into The Chicken Genome, Zachary Eldon Olsen
Developing Tools For Introducing Modifications Into The Chicken Genome, Zachary Eldon Olsen
Theses and Dissertations
The chicken is a classic model organism that has provided key insights into embryonic development. Chicken embryos can be directly manipulated and observed during development while retaining the potential to reach adulthood. Despite this benefit, the utility of the chicken in studying development has been limited by the difficulty of introducing genetic changes to the genome. The recent development of cell culture conditions for chicken primordial germ cells (cPGC) has made it feasible to produce transgenic chickens, but there is still a lack of tools for introducing genetic modifications into cPGCs. Recombinase Mediated Cassette Exchange (RMCE) is a technique that …

This work presents a framework that allows Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) to avoid dynamic obstacles through initial training on an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) and cross-domain retraining on a USV. This is achieved by integrating a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) agent that generates high-level control commands and leveraging a neural network based model predictive controller (NN-MPC) to reach target waypoints and reject disturbances. A Deep Q Network (DQN) utilized in this framework is trained in a ground environment using a Turtlebot robot and retrained in a water environment using the BREAM USV in the Gazebo simulator to avoid dynamic obstacles. …

Hyperspectral imaging acquires data in both the spatial and frequency domains to offer abundant physical or biological information. However, conventional hyperspectral imaging has intrinsic limitations of bulky instruments, slow data acquisition rate, and spatiospectral trade-off. Here we introduce hyperspectral learning for snapshot hyperspectral imaging in which sampled hyperspectral data in a small subarea are incorporated into a learning algorithm to recover the hypercube. Hyperspectral learning exploits the idea that a photograph is more than merely a picture and contains detailed spectral information. A small sampling of hyperspectral data enables spectrally informed learning to recover a hypercube from a red–green–blue (RGB) …

Dynamics Of A Fractional-Order Delayed Model Of Covid-19 With Vaccination Efficacy, Fathalla A. Rihan, Udhayakumar Kandasamy, Hebatallah J. Alsakaji, Nicola Sottocornola
All Works
In this study, we provide a fractional-order mathematical model that considers the effect of vaccination on COVID-19 spread dynamics. The model accounts for the latent period of intervention strategies by incorporating a time delay τ. A basic reproduction number, R0, is determined for the model, and prerequisites for endemic equilibrium are discussed. The model’s endemic equilibrium point also exhibits local asymptotic stability (under certain conditions), and a Hopf bifurcation condition is established. Different scenarios of vaccination efficacy are simulated. As a result of the vaccination efforts, the number of deaths and those affected have decreased. COVID-19 may not be effectively …

Morphological Characterization Of Intraspecific Variation For Trichome Traits In Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum), Satinderpal Kaur, Neetu Khanal, Robert K. Dearth, Rupesh R. Kariyat
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Trichomes, the hairlike protuberances in plants, have been well known to act as the first line of defense against herbivores, and abiotic stresses, along with other structural defenses such as spines, thorns, and waxes. We previously reported the tremendous variation in trichome traits among different wild and cultivated Solanum species and demonstrated that trichomes types and density are traditionally miscalculated and often misnamed. However, intraspecific variation in trichome traits is poorly understood, although this has implications for stress tolerance and resistance breeding programs in economically important crop species and can also mediate ecological interactions at multiple trophic levels in their …

Introduction: Influenza is highly contagious, vaccine-preventable, and may result in significant morbidity and mortality. While vaccination is the primary protection against influenza, vaccination rates remain low. Traditionally, primary care clinics, retail pharmacies, and public health departments offer influenza vaccines. However, offering influenza vaccines in new settings may increase their availability to the public and increase community uptake. This project aimed to add emergency departments as a new influenza vaccine location to increase the number of vaccines distributed during the 2020 to 2021 influenza season.
Methods: Adult patients discharged from 24 emergency departments were included in this pre- post-intervention project. A …

APOE-ɛ4 risk on Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) differs between race/ethnic groups, presumably due to ancestral genomic background surrounding the APOE locus. We studied whether African and Amerindian ancestry-enriched genetic variants in the APOE region modify the effect of the APOE-ɛ4 alleles on Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) in Hispanics/Latinos. We defined African and Amerindian ancestry-enriched variants as those common in one Hispanic/Latino parental ancestry and rare in the other two. We identified such variants in the APOE region with a predicted moderate impact based on the SnpEff tool. We tested their interaction with APOE-ɛ4 on MCI in …

Towards Scalable Mental Health: Leveraging Digital Tools In Combination With Computational Modeling To Aid In Treatment And Assessment Of Major Depressive Disorder, Matthew D. Nemesure
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating disorder that impacts the lives of nearly 280 million individuals worldwide, representing 5% of the overall adult population. Unfortunately, these statistics have been both trending upward and are also likely an underestimate. This can be primarily attributed to lack of screening paired with a lack of providers. Worldwide, there are roughly 450 individuals living with MDD per mental health care provider. Adding to this burden, approximately half of affected individuals that do receive care of any kind will fail to remain in remission. The goal of this thesis work is to leverage statistical …

Artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, cybersecurity, the Industrial Internet of Things, and blockchain are some of the technologies and solutions that are combined to produce “smart manufacturing,” which is used to optimize manufacturing processes by creating and/or accepting data. In manufacturing, spark erosion technique such as wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) is a process that machines different hard-to-cut alloys. It is regarded as the solution for cutting intricate parts and materials that are resistant to conventional machining techniques or are required by design. In the present study, holes of different radii, i.e. 1, 3, and 5mm, have been cut on Nickelvac-HX. …

Predicting Site‑Specific Economic Optimal Nitrogen Rate Using Machine Learning Methods And On‑Farm Precision Experimentation, Alfonso De Lara, Taro Mieno, Joe D. Luck, Laila A. Puntel
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Applying at the economic optimal nitrogen rate (EONR) has the potential to increase nitrogen (N) fertilization efficiency and profits while reducing negative environmental impacts. On-farm precision experimentation (OFPE) provides the opportunity to collect large amounts of data to estimate the EONR. Machine learning (ML) methods such as generalized additive models (GAM) and random forest (RF) are promising methods for estimating yields and EONR. Twenty OFPE N trials in wheat and barley were conducted and analyzed with soil, terrain and remote-sensed variables to address the following objectives: (1) to quantify the spatial variability of winter crops yield and the yield response …
