The “Unseen” Tourism: Travel Experience Of People With Visual Impairment, Guanghui Qiao, Hanqi Song, Bruce Prideaux, Songshan (Sam) Huang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The World Health Organization has estimated that globally, over 2.2 billion people live with some form of visual impairment. However, research into the tourism experiences of this large group of people remains limited. This paper employs embodiment theory and sensory compensation theory to examine aspects of the tourism experience from the perspective of visually impaired tourists. The analysis was based on travel notes written by Chinese visually impaired tourists. Seven unique types of tourism experience were identified including “Sensory Compensation” and “Barrier-free experiences”. The Effect Of Performance Capacity And Decision-Making Speed On Skilful Fighting, Sarah M. Lane, Mark Briffa Mar 2023

The Effect Of Performance Capacity And Decision-Making Speed On Skilful Fighting, Sarah M. Lane, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Skilful fighting encompasses an individual's ability not only to perform agonistic behaviours accurately and efficiently, but also to choose the most appropriate behaviour or tactic from its repertoire based on the information available. The efficacy of different tactics may depend both on the behaviour of the opponent and on the individual's internal state, for example a specific behaviour may become less effective over time as fatigue sets in. Furthermore, because fights are dynamic interactions, the ability to choose the appropriate tactic will require rapid information processing and may thus be constrained by an individual's cognitive ability. Here, we conducted a …

International research and development projects (or grand challenge projects) consist of multicultural, multi-country, multi-sectoral, and multi-stakeholder initiatives aimed at poverty reduction. They are usually conceived as partnerships between actors in the global north–south. The COVID-19 pandemic was a major unexpected disruption to ongoing projects and challenged their already complex management. The aim of this paper is to present evidence on how international development projects were impacted by COVID-19 with a particular focus on the relationship between research institutions in the north and south. We conducted a mixed-methods research study, combining a reflective exercise with the co-author team and a survey …

Clickable Polymer Scaffolds Enable Ce Recovery With Peptide Ligands, Jacob D. Hostert, Maura R. Sepesy, Christine E. Duval, Julie N. Renner

Faculty Scholarship

Rare earth elements (REEs) are a vital part of many technologies with particular importance to the renewable energy sector and there is a pressing need for environmentally friendly and sustainable processes to recover and recycle them from waste streams. Functionalized polymer scaffolds are a promising means to recover REEs due to the ability to engineer both transport properties of the porous material and specificity for target ions. In this work, REE adsorbing polymer scaffolds were synthesized by first introducing poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (GMA) brushes onto porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) surface through activator generated electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (AGET ATRP). …

Jurnal Politik

Political scientists have studied the emergence and success of political dynasties in Southeast Asian countries, with post-New Order Indonesia providing several examples. Scholars have shown that Indonesia's political dynasties struggle to secure succession through local politics, but their analysis does not fully capture the turmoil of a political dynasty. This article analyzes the Yasin Limpo family's instability, focusing on how territorial politics has been exploited by local opposition and dynasties to seize and maintain power. This qualitative study provides a crucial means of understanding the success and failure of political dynasties. This article reveals that to monopolize power; political dynasties …

Conflict Weather: Climate Change As A Driver Of Pastoralist Conflicts In The Lake Chad Region, Tope Shola Akinyetun, Nife Elizabeth Ogunbodede Mar 2023

Conflict Weather: Climate Change As A Driver Of Pastoralist Conflicts In The Lake Chad Region, Tope Shola Akinyetun, Nife Elizabeth Ogunbodede

Jurnal Politik

The Lake Chad region hosts a significant portion of sub-Saharan Africa’s pastoralist activities. Pastoralism in the region has become synonymous with armed conflict, thus escalating the tension in the area and making it a hotbed of insecurity. Among other things, the exacerbation of the herder-farmer crisis in this area is attributable to climate change. Lake Chad which serves as a source of water, fodder, and fertile land for herders and farmers in the region, has been shrinking. This, coupled with drought, flooding, and variability in weather patterns, forces pastoralists to move around and engage in a constant migratory pattern, resulting …

Peer to Peer Lending (P2P Lending) has become one of the financing options for both individuals and businesses. The use of P2P Lending during the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly increased from both borrowers and lenders. Recently, the issue of P2P Lending that is often discussed pertains to borrowers, but the lenders seem to be forgotten and not receiving special attention, even though lenders also require protection because they can at least protect themselves from the unwanted risk of default. This research is relevant because it is expected to provide information related to the management of P2P Lending companies and how …

Pandangan John Finnis Mengenai Hukum Yang Tidak Adil, Petrus Ckl Bello Mar 2023

Pandangan John Finnis Mengenai Hukum Yang Tidak Adil, Petrus Ckl Bello

Jurnal Hukum & Pembangunan

Contemporary natural law thinker John Finnis in his book Natural Law and Natural Right published in 1980 differentiates between legal obligations and moral obligations. According to Finnis, legal obligations cannot change, while moral obligations can change, in the sense that when it comes to unjust laws, only the moral obligation to obey the unjust law is extinguished, while the legal obligation to obey the unjust law remains and is binding. For Finnis, natural law theory does not focus on the view that the law is wrong or against moral principles that cannot be called law (lex injusta non est lex), …

Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning the Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems has never been revised while the development of science and technology has influenced a paradigm shift in the protection of biodiversity. The proposal of Commission IV of the House of Representatives to propose a revision of Law Number 5 of 1990 was approved in the Plenary Session as a 2021 Priority Bill.
