Biomimicry In Solar Energy Applications, Terrin Cramer, Yicheng Kang, Ryan Ogino Apr 2023

Biomimicry In Solar Energy Applications, Terrin Cramer, Yicheng Kang, Ryan Ogino

Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Theses

While solar power is one of the leading renewable energy sources today, current solar farms produce an amount of byproduct heat that is contributing to rising global temperatures and the deaths of many birds. Furthermore, solar panels that use water as a coolant through a sprinkler system use up a great amount of water that could be allocated somewhere else. Our project seeks to address both of these issues through a biomimetic design. Drawing inspiration from the ghost plant, our proposed solar panel cooling system is expected to reduce the amount of byproduct heat produced by panels, increase the overall …

Air Conditioner Fail Safe Detector, Jonathan Li Apr 2023

Air Conditioner Fail Safe Detector, Jonathan Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Theses

Air Conditioners are essential to human life. In an age of sudden temperature changes, moving systems, particularly HVAC (Heat Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems, are the primary source to physically and financially protect the health of all workers, employees, and students. Air Conditioners are prone to mechanical and electrical malfunction/breakdown due to excessive use. Regular maintenance and service intervals are helpful but do not guarantee free-malfunction systems. When the systems break down, especially commercial systems, the repair cost can be highly expensive and time-consuming. Can we detect early signs of potential problems in the systems to minimize the repair cost …

Faculty Research 2023

The laboratory mouse has served for decades as an informative animal model system for investigating the genetic and genomic basis of cancer in humans. Although thousands of mouse models have been generated, compiling and aggregating relevant data and knowledge about these models is hampered by a general lack of compliance, in the published literature, with nomenclature and annotation standards for genes, alleles, mouse strains and cancer types. The Mouse Models of Human Cancer database (MMHCdb) is an expertly curated, comprehensive knowledgebase of diverse types of mouse models of human cancer, including inbred mouse strains, genetically engineered mouse models, patient-derived xenografts, …

Modeling The Tripartite Role Of Cyclin C In Cellular Stress Response Coordination, Steven J. Doyle Apr 2023

Modeling The Tripartite Role Of Cyclin C In Cellular Stress Response Coordination, Steven J. Doyle

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

For normal cellular function, exogenous signals must be interpreted and careful coordination must take place to ensure desired fates are achieved. Mitochondria are key regulatory nodes of cellular fate, undergoing fission/fusion cycles depending on the needs of the cell, and help mediate cell death fates. The CKM or Cdk8 kinase module, is composed of cyclin C (CC), Cdk8, Med12/12L, and Med13/13L. The CKM controls RNA polymerase II, acting as a regulator of stress-response and growth-control genes. Following stress, CC translocates to the mitochondria and interacts with both fission and iRCD apoptotic mediators. We hypothesize that CC represents a key mediator, …

Undergraduate, 3rd Place: Little Choice In The Matter For Comfort Women: Tales Of Little Hope And Survival During The Second World War, Dayden Gardner

2023 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

During the Second World War, Japan was an imperialistic powerhouse that took over most of Southeast and South Asia during the war. In this time of conflict, Japan committed atrocities that are still being questioned to this day. One of their lesser-known war crimes was the enactment of so-called comfort stations during this war. These stations provided Japanese military men with sex from women, dubbing them “comfort women.” These stations were established widely throughout the Japanese empire after the events of the Nanking Massacre to prevent rapes of women in captured territories and to protect their soldiers from venereal disease.1 …

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is an aggressive, complex diagnosis that accounts for approximately five percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United States (Kawashita et al., 2020;National Cancer Institute, n.d. A). There are various types of HNC and several tumor sites inwhich HNC can potentially occur. Because routine screening for HNC does not exist, it is difficult to diagnose and often found at advanced stages (National Cancer Institute, n.d. A).

When determining how successful a student may be as they attempt to navigate higher education after concluding a prison sentence, there are a few factors that need to be considered. Namely, the barriers to college and academic success, as well as the facilitators of success should be examined as many factors fall under these two categories (Donaldson & Viera, 2021). Barriers to higher education and academic success are the determining factors in if a student that has completed an incarceration sentence would enroll in, and complete, courses. Even if this unique population of students has the means to attend college …

Graduate, 1st Place: World War I War Front And Home Front: The Correspondence That Brought Them Together, Michelle Thole

2023 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

The First World War was the first time American soldiers had participated in a war at a distance from home that did not easily facilitate home furloughs. Although the United States and Europe are physically separated by more than 3,500 miles, the relative distance between American World War I soldiers on the war front and their families on the home front was minor; the correspondence between them mitigated the physical and cognitive distance.

Historians of the First World War have explored soldiers’ contact with their families while in training camps and the US military’s intentional cultivation of a balance between …

No idea is original. People have been writing concepts down for thousands of years, and coming up with them for even longer, so it’s statistically possible that at some point, an ancient Mesopotamian came up with James Bond. With centuries of literature and film already written—ideas that probably weren’t original then either—it’s even harder to create something entirely new. With that in mind, modern film and TV relies heavily on character tropes: pre-existing stereotypes for fictional characters based on shared attributes, appearances and even entire backstories. Tropes can do much of the storytelling without saying a word. For example, the …

State Gross Domestic Product Predictions Using Hierarchical Clustering And Multivariate Time Series, Austin Dae Nietfeld Apr 2023

State Gross Domestic Product Predictions Using Hierarchical Clustering And Multivariate Time Series, Austin Dae Nietfeld

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

This research was conducted to determine the weight certain taxes and expenditures have over state Gross Domestic Product(GDP) as well as how accurately these predictors can predict future GDP. The motivation behind this project comes from a desire to find the most efficient way to increase the GDP of states with poorer economies. This will improve the quality of life of citizens of these states. To come to a consensus as to what predictors are most influential, Hierarchical Clustering will be used to split the states into four groups. The average of each tax, expenditure and GDP from 2015-2020 will …

Extending The Radius Of Convergence Of The Drinfeld Module Logarithm, Ethan Clapp Apr 2023

Extending The Radius Of Convergence Of The Drinfeld Module Logarithm, Ethan Clapp

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

Drinfeld modules are, in essence, a way to create a function field analogue to complex multiplication. With these modules, we can define a logarithm function analogous to the natural logarithm by virtue of a power series. Similarly to how we extend the radius of convergence of the natural logarithm with complex numbers, we can also extend the radius of convergence for these Drinfeld module logarithms. While there are proofs for extending the radius of convergence of the Carlitz module, the simplest form of Drinfeld module, there is no proof for a generalized Drinfeld. In this paper, a method of extending …

Regression Analysis Of Injuries On Nfl Quarterbacks, Julie Weems Apr 2023

Regression Analysis Of Injuries On Nfl Quarterbacks, Julie Weems

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

Risk assessment is an important aspect of many careers such as first responders and the military. This is no different for people who play sports, especially people who are in contact sports such as football. These players’ lives can be changed forever with one bad hit. The goal of this research is to analyze the probability of an injury for the National Football League’s (NFL) quarterbacks. It is hard to predict when, what, and where an injury will occur, because of this very little work has been done on the subject matter in a general form. The goal of this …

Effects Of Topography On Tornado Paths Using Navier Stokes Equations, Kayleigh Smith Apr 2023

Effects Of Topography On Tornado Paths Using Navier Stokes Equations, Kayleigh Smith

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

Tornadoes are relatively common in Louisiana with an average of 55 tornadoes per year. Predicting tornado paths has been extremely challenging due to the many factors that play into the formation of a tornado. According to NASA/ADS topography can have significant influence on tornado direction. The main goal of this research is to analyze tornado patterns and to determine if local topography has an effect on tornadic activity. Navier-Stokes partial differential equations will be used to model the data that is collected from the national weather service and a finite difference method will be used to solve the equations. Data …

Each year the National Fire Protection Agency(NFPA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency(FEMA) collect data on the number of firefighter deaths and injuries, in order to determine if the standards and regulations are keeping firefighters safe. Statistical hypothesis testing and linear regression were performed on the data to show if in fact …

Modeling Reverberant Chambers Used In Time-Reversal Cavities Using Time-Frequency Methods, Jordan Savoie Apr 2023

Modeling Reverberant Chambers Used In Time-Reversal Cavities Using Time-Frequency Methods, Jordan Savoie

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

The signal processing technique of time-reversal is used for various purposes in electro-magnetic interference testing, radar, communication, sonar, and medicine. This paper models the impulse response of a reverberant chamber such as might be used for a time-reversal cavity (TRC) using time-frequency methods. Reverberant chambers have chaotic delaying phase responses that cause the majority of the distortion seen in their impulse response. Time-reversal cancels this, creating a focused signal from a disperse one. Most research modeling the behavior of TRCs is more concerned with their physics, so there is relatively little commented on the form of their signals. Data of …

Does The Three Point Shot Affect Winning Percentage, Marcamus Winn Apr 2023

Does The Three Point Shot Affect Winning Percentage, Marcamus Winn

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

The three-point shot, introduced in the late 1970s, is a shot that occurs typically 24 feet away from the basket at the professional level. Strategically the game of basketball was originally based on two-point field goals. Recently, there has been a noticeable trend in the popularity of the three-point shot amongst professional teams. Nowadays, three point shot attempts account for more than a third of average NBA shot selection. Statistical analysis is becoming integral to athletics. Statistics has become a critical component to the development of not only on court basketball strategies, but also team structure as well. There are …

The data of a control and treatment group were compared using a four-way factorial means test to analyze the impact the modified reading intervention …

Impact Comparison Of Face-To-Face And Asynchronous Learning Environments On Student Performance, Rebecca Reyes Apr 2023

Impact Comparison Of Face-To-Face And Asynchronous Learning Environments On Student Performance, Rebecca Reyes

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this action research project was to explore the impact of the Face-to-Face and Asynchronous learning environments on student performance. The recent Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 pushed primary and secondary schools nationwide to offer an online learning environment as an option in public education. Accordingly, grand debate arose about whether students’ performance remained the same regardless of learning environment. A mixed-method study was used to determine significant difference in student performance, and analysis depicted learning environment outcomes by race as well. Data analysis revealed no significant difference in student performance between the Face-to-Face and Asynchronous learning environments overall. …
