Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome: Surgical Treatment Vs Conservative Care, Molly Ruebke Apr 2023

Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome: Surgical Treatment Vs Conservative Care, Molly Ruebke

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• Summary of Problem: Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is a relatively rare pathology characterized by pain, tightness, and/or numbness in the affected calf upon performance of repetitive physical activity, most commonly with running or serving in the military. CECS usually has a delay in diagnosis due to low levels of awareness among clinicians and a wide range of differential diagnoses for chronic exertional leg pain. The natural course of CECS is often not self-limiting and therefore requires intervention, as symptoms can be severely debilitating and eventually force patients to avoid any provoking activity. The purpose of this literature review …

A Comparison Of Pharmacotherapy Versus Complementary Medicine In The Treatment Of Migraines, Samantha Braaten Apr 2023

A Comparison Of Pharmacotherapy Versus Complementary Medicine In The Treatment Of Migraines, Samantha Braaten

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Migraine headache is a common, universal neurological disorder that can be complicated to treat. Despite the wide availability of treatments used as prophylactic agents against migraines, outcomes have been inconsistent, and a number of patients do not respond to prophylactic medications. Therefore, it is important to investigate new non-pharmacological modalities accompanied with less adverse effects and maximal efficacy. To determine if complementary medicine modalities such as acupuncture, botulinum toxin-A, or cognitive behavioral therapy can be as effective as traditional pharmacotherapy for the treatment of migraines, a literature review was completed using meta-analyses and clinical trial reviews. Despite the fact there …

Active Toxoplasmosis Infection: Efficacy And Safety Of Treatment Options, Daniele Krouse Apr 2023

Active Toxoplasmosis Infection: Efficacy And Safety Of Treatment Options, Daniele Krouse

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

This literature review intends to investigate the safety and efficacy of two different drug treatment regimens, pyrimethamine versus trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, for active toxoplasmosis infections. Affecting nearly 11% of the United States population and up to 80% of the populations of tropical countries, Toxoplasmosis infection is the second leading cause of death from food borne illness. Current classic management of active infection with pyrimethamine is correlated with numerous undesirable side effects, high cost and need for complex use of adjunctive medications. It is necessary to identify alternative treatment options with fewer side effects, less complex regimens, lower cost, and easier access for …

Associations Between Screen Use And Depression In Youth, David Franta

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

the youth population have remained largely unclear  Depression is common in children and adolescents  Screen use is readily available and frequently used by children and adolescents  This literature review was conducted to evaluate current literature regarding depression in the youth population, to include differences between sexes, across ages, and amongst different types of screen use  Results demonstrate that an association between screen use and depression in the youth population does exist, particularly cross sectionally  A causative or reciprocal relationship may be present, however, if it is present, it is quite minor  Girls tend to …

Perimenopausal Depression Screening And Treatment Efficacy Between Antidepressants And/Or Hormone Replacement Therapy, Mandy Stenehjem Apr 2023

Perimenopausal Depression Screening And Treatment Efficacy Between Antidepressants And/Or Hormone Replacement Therapy, Mandy Stenehjem

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

During perimenopause, women are at increased risk of depression due to complex and multifactorial factors, such as HPA axis dysregulation and fluctuations in hormones, like estradiol. Antidepressants are currently used to treat depression, but hormone replacement therapy may also have comparable antidepressant effects based on hormonal mechanisms. Perimenopausal depression is a unique subtype of depression and needs to be routinely screened by OBGYNs and primary care providers. The literature review found mixed results on the efficacy of HRT, antidepressants, and a combination of both; all treatments have shown promising benefits and specific screening may be needed to tailor treatment.

Impact Of Circadian Rhythm On Adhd, Tyson Williams Apr 2023

Impact Of Circadian Rhythm On Adhd, Tyson Williams

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

The purpose of this research and systematic literature review is to determine if altering the circadian rhythm in people with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) improves their symptoms. Up to 75% of people with childhood-onset ADHD exhibit a delayed circadian rhythm phase. This can cause difficulty in initiating and maintaining sleep, which in turn can cause excessive daytime sleepiness and further exacerbating ADHD symptoms, especially hyperactivity. Journal articles were searched in the databases of PubMed that concerned treatment aspects that would affect circadian rhythm and ADHD. Topics were further divided into themes that included melatonin, light therapy (LT), sleep hygiene intervention, …

Archives Exhibits

What a strange exhibit! There appears to be neither rhyme nor reason to what is here. Well, truth be told, this is not an exhibit. What you see here are artifacts or documents or images that are not part of an exhibit, and what is here may change periodically. Since we cannot show it all, Open Storage is another way of sharing more of the things in our physical collections. We have modelled this approach from other museums and archives.

Enhancement Of Muscle Shortening Torque Preloaded With Muscle Lengthening Is Joint-Specific, Marzouq K. Almutairi, Gary R. Hunter, Donald H. Lein, Sojung Kim, David R. Bryan, Mario Inacio, Christopher P. Hurt, William Reed, Harshvardhan Singh

Rita & Larry Salva School of Nursing and Health Professions Departmental Research

Our cross-sectional study aimed to investigate joint specificity of concentric muscle torque enhancement after a maximum eccentric contraction for the knee versus ankle joints across two different movement velocities (120°/s and 180°/s). After a familiarization session, 22 healthy young adults randomly performed concentric (CONC) and maximum eccentric preloaded concentric (EccCONC) muscle strength tests of the knee extensors and ankle plantar flexors of the non-dominant leg on an isokinetic strength testing device. We calculated the ratio between EccCONC and CONC (EccCONC/CONC) for all the conditions as the marker of concentric muscle torque enhancement. Separate two-way (joints x velocity) within repeated measures …

The Effects Of Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediator Lipoxin A4 On Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilms And Interactions With Monocytes, Julianne M. Thornton Apr 2023

The Effects Of Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediator Lipoxin A4 On Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilms And Interactions With Monocytes, Julianne M. Thornton

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is an opportunistic pathogen known as a major cause of hospital-acquired secondary infections, commonly causing chronic respiratory infections in immunocompromised individuals, especially those with cystic fibrosis, and often found in wound infections. P. aeruginosa uses the quorum sensing pathway to readily form protective biofilms, which reduce the efficacy of antibiotics and access by host immune cells to eradicate the pathogen. Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) are lipids endogenously produced by the host immune response to infection to aid in infection resolution. One SPM, Lipoxin A4 (LxA4), has been shown to be a robust quorum sensing inhibitor.

Wills And Testaments In Medieval England From The Thirteenth To The Sixteenth Century, Robert A. Wood Apr 2023

Wills And Testaments In Medieval England From The Thirteenth To The Sixteenth Century, Robert A. Wood

TEAMS Documents of Practice

This volume explores the will-making process in late medieval England for all levels of society. Wills are some of the most studied records of the late Middle Ages and capture the evidence of what people owned and the patterns of family relationships. These documents, compiled from several archives and city records, cast a light on many aspects of medieval life, including gender distinctions and the heavy influence of the church. Included are wills from widows, tradespeople and artisans, clergy, and high-ranking wealthy people, and through these sources he shows how wills, inventories, and testaments prepared people and their souls for …

Is Adiposity Related To Repeat Measures Of Blood Leukocyte Dna Methylation Across Childhood And Adolescence?, Luke Montrose

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation may influence gene expression and phenotypes, including obesity in childhood. The directionality of this relationship is nevertheless unclear, and some evidence suggests that adiposity modifies the epigenome, rather than the other way around. In this pilot study, we utilize data from the Early Life Exposures in Mexico to Environmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) study to examine whether measures of adiposity in childhood and early adolescence are associated with repeated measures of blood leukocyte DNA methylation at LINE-1 repetitive elements and two genes implicated in growth and adiposity: H19 and HSD11B2. Longitudinal epigenetic data were generated …

A Blog On Building A Backyard Garden, Carrie N. Mccashland Apr 2023

A Blog On Building A Backyard Garden, Carrie N. Mccashland

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

My capstone project involved building a backyard garden and writing a blog to include my innovative approach to gardening. In the past few years, there have been disruptions in the food supply chain and the price of food has skyrocketed due to inflation. I can teach people how to grow food their family will enjoy in their own backyard. Fewer people will have to depend on the food provided in the grocery store. People will have a greater knowledge of what they are eating and how it was made. Those people who live in more rural areas will not have …

The Effect Of Photoperiod On Male Zebrafish Sex Hormones, Madeline Phillips Apr 2023

The Effect Of Photoperiod On Male Zebrafish Sex Hormones, Madeline Phillips

Research and Creativity Symposium

The goal of this research was to explore how photoperiod affects the reproductive endocrine axis in zebrafish (Danio rerio). It is known that the reproductive endocrine axis controls zebrafish reproduction. Additionally, it is known that photoperiod determines both reproductive seasonality (long days promote reproduction) and daily timing of spawning (initiates at the start of the light phase). However, there is limited research examining the effects of photoperiod on those endocrine pathways controlling zebrafish reproduction. I hypothesized that in males, long-day photoperiods promote the synthesis of key reproductive hormones, the gonadotropins (FSH and LH). To test this hypothesis, I used qPCR …

Re-Imagining Tibetan Buddhist Mandalas: The Practical Incorporation Of Contemporary Aesthetics With Traditional Vajrayana Symbolism, Kaelyn Escuadra Apr 2023

Re-Imagining Tibetan Buddhist Mandalas: The Practical Incorporation Of Contemporary Aesthetics With Traditional Vajrayana Symbolism, Kaelyn Escuadra

Research and Creativity Symposium

Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism, along with its beliefs and practices, has largely remained hidden from the world; however, the rich tradition has much to offer religiously, philosophically, and through its artwork. This project provides a brief overview of Tibetan Buddhist history, the development of the field of aesthetics, and the methods through which these areas can be combined in a re-incorporation and re-imagining of traditional Vajrayana symbolism present in Vajrayana mandalas in and with contemporary aesthetic ideas.

Using Transition State Theory To Understand The Kinetics For The Gas-Phase Synthesis Of Ammonia, Chloe Boyd, Stephen Case, Abigail Seputro Apr 2023

Using Transition State Theory To Understand The Kinetics For The Gas-Phase Synthesis Of Ammonia, Chloe Boyd, Stephen Case, Abigail Seputro

Research and Creativity Symposium

To identify the rate-determining step and the most stable transition state for the Haber-Bosch synthesis of gas-phase ammonia, electronic structure calculations for the reactants (N2, H2, NNH2, H2NNH2, HNNH3), intermediates, and transition states were found using the program GAMESS and the basis sets 6-31G*, 6-311G**, and STO-3G (1). The basis set 6-31G* revealed N2(g) + 3H2(g) ⇌ TS1 ⇌ NNH2(g)+ 2H2(g) as the rate-determining step because it had the smallest equilibrium constant (Keq) of 4.2085*10-36. The reaction coordinate diagram showed the most stable transition state was TS4 from the step HNNH3(g) + H2(g) ⇌ TS4 ⇌ 2NH3(g), which had the …

Factors Affecting Total And Bioavailable Concentrations Of Trace Metals In Surface Soils In The Kingston, Jamaica, Region, Katherine Cook, Faith Jones, Anna Velardi

Research and Creativity Symposium

This study investigated background levels of concerning metals in a variety of soils in and near Kingston, the capital of Jamaica. Minimal soil sample collection and analysis had occurred since a 1988 island-wide geochemical survey revealed very high concentrations of total Cd in many regions, along with elevated concentrations of As, Cu, Zn, and Cr in some types of soil, with background lead levels elevated only at specific polluted sites. An updated examination was deemed important due to a growing city population, increased fuel combustion, and intensive urban gardening. This study analyzed soils collected in 2022 for total metal concentrations, …

Gender Liberation And Mutual Aid: A Blog Post, Chyenne "Chy" Tyler, Mary Jo Klinker Apr 2023

Gender Liberation And Mutual Aid: A Blog Post, Chyenne "Chy" Tyler, Mary Jo Klinker

Feminist & Queer Praxis

During the Spring 2023 semester, the WGSS 374: Queer Theories and Politics course studied the mutual aid and LGBTQ+ community organizing. Trans studies scholar Dean Spade defines “mutual aid is the radical act of caring for each other while working to change the world” (2020). Amidst national attacks on trans youth via anti-trans bills, our course imagined how collective care and mutual aid provide vehicles of gender-affirming safety in Winona.
