Safety And Efficacy Of Apixaban Vs Rivaroxaban: In Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation, Cody Dewitt Apr 2023

Safety And Efficacy Of Apixaban Vs Rivaroxaban: In Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation, Cody Dewitt

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• Introduction: Nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, the most common cardiac arrhythmia in developed countries, warrants anticoagulation for stroke prevention. Updated guidelines recommend direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) over historically used warfarin. The purpose of this review is to compare clinical safety and efficacy outcomes between apixaban and rivaroxaban. • Research Questions: In patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation on a direct oral anticoagulant, is there a significant difference in safety and efficacy between apixaban and rivaroxaban? Does decreased kidney function change safety and efficacy? Does varying BMI such as low weight or obesity change safety and efficacy? • Methods: A retrospective literature review …

Encounters With “Love And Math” A Belated Review Of Edward Frenkel’S Love And Math: The Heart Of Hidden Reality, Rina Zazkis Apr 2023

Encounters With “Love And Math” A Belated Review Of Edward Frenkel’S Love And Math: The Heart Of Hidden Reality, Rina Zazkis

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In “Love and Math” the author intertwines his personal experiences as a student of mathematics and as a research mathematician with an exposition of modern mathematics, focusing on its elegance and beauty. Much is said in previous reviews (e.g., Grosholz, 2015) of this New York Times bestseller and winner of the Euler Book Prize from the Mathematical Association of America. All praise the author for his fascinating narratives in which he reveals the joy of intellectual discovery and provides a passionate account of exciting ideas of modern mathematics. There is no need in repetition, so this review is rather personal. …

Juicy Nuggets With A Strong Core A Review Of Jordan Ellenberg’S How Not To Be Wrong: The Power Of Mathematical Thinking, Taras Gula Apr 2023

Juicy Nuggets With A Strong Core A Review Of Jordan Ellenberg’S How Not To Be Wrong: The Power Of Mathematical Thinking, Taras Gula

The Mathematics Enthusiast

How Not to Be Wrong is a wonderful and entertaining romp through a field of intriguing and thought-provoking anecdotes and social conundrums in which mathematical thinking and mathematics are revealed in all their messiness and power. While reading Jordan Ellenberg’s weave of stories for the first time, I found myself retelling them to as many individuals in my social circles as I could. Though the intent of the book is quite serious, [its goal is to show that mathematical thinking is accessible and useful to those who have not mastered complex mathematics, that mathematical thinking can lead to profound insights …

Mathematics Education (And Other) Perspectives A Review Of Nassim Taleb’S The Black Swan: The Impact Of The Highly Improbable, Gale Russell Apr 2023

Mathematics Education (And Other) Perspectives A Review Of Nassim Taleb’S The Black Swan: The Impact Of The Highly Improbable, Gale Russell

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The biggest problem I have with reviewing The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable (Taleb, 2010) is deciding from what perspective to write. There are a number of lenses through which I considered this work in relation to mathematics education: the Associate Professor, always searching for new resources for mathematics education classes; the teacher, always looking for new messages and ways of speaking to students (including pre-service teachers) about what mathematics is, what purposes it serves, and what limitations it inherently carries; the learner-teacher, always looking for a greater depth of understanding of the mathematics we are charged …

Zero To Infinity A Review Of Charles Seife’S Zero: The Biography Of A Dangerous Idea, Douglas Mcdougall Apr 2023

Zero To Infinity A Review Of Charles Seife’S Zero: The Biography Of A Dangerous Idea, Douglas Mcdougall

The Mathematics Enthusiast

“Nil”, “Nunca”, “Nada”, “Nil”, “Nothing”, “Zero”. Sounds of a multilingual class of mathematics, perhaps. No, it is the sounds around the family table card game as we all declare the number of tricks that we would like to take in a card game called Wizard. The speaker is telling the scorekeeper that they would not like to take any tricks. They would like to take “zero” tricks as if they could gather the zero cards. We all know that we do not want any tricks and we do our best not to take any if we declare that we want …

Part Two of the larger project relates to a primary research project designed to gain further insight into the factors that facilitate and hinder young female …

‘The Harvest Is So Great And The Laborers Are So Few’: The Public Ministry Of Two Evangelical Women Preachers In Nineteenth-Century Minnesota, Lisa R. Lindell Apr 2023

‘The Harvest Is So Great And The Laborers Are So Few’: The Public Ministry Of Two Evangelical Women Preachers In Nineteenth-Century Minnesota, Lisa R. Lindell

Hilton M. Briggs Library Faculty Publications

On a Sunday morning in July 1873, worshippers gathered for church in Brother Cheatham’s grove in Utica, Winona County, Minnesota, in the heart of America’s western frontier. Conducting the service was Ruth Matilda Rowell, an Advent Christian pastor. Assisting her was Minerva Ursula Cobb, an ordained minister in the Freewill Baptist church. The participation of two female ministers that day rendered the occasion notable. Both women were experienced preachers, with Rowell’s ministry in Minnesota dating back to the mid-1850s and Cobb’s to her arrival in 1864, with prior ministry in the state of Wisconsin. By exploring the vocational paths of …

Community Experiences In The Strategic Human Resource Management Black Box, Richard Harvey Jonsen, Neil M. Boyd, Franklin Oikelome, Douglas Trimble Apr 2023

Community Experiences In The Strategic Human Resource Management Black Box, Richard Harvey Jonsen, Neil M. Boyd, Franklin Oikelome, Douglas Trimble

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

Recent research suggests experiencing community at work (i.e., perceiving a sense of community (SOC) and a sense of community responsibility (SOC-R)) is important for employee and organizational outcomes, however, we know very little about how these constructs operate in human resource management contexts. This study peers into the strategic human resource management “black box,” which is an organizational setting where psychological and social variables are believed to influence employee perceptions in ways that impact their individual functioning, and subsequently improve organizational outcomes. Specifically, the study tests hypotheses regarding the relationship between high-involvement work climate (i.e., a human resource context), psychological …

Reactive Particle Swarm Control Architecture And Application For Scalar Field Adaptive Navigation, Shae Taylor Hart Apr 2023

Reactive Particle Swarm Control Architecture And Application For Scalar Field Adaptive Navigation, Shae Taylor Hart

Engineering Ph.D. Theses

Adaptive navigation is a subcategory of navigation techniques that attempts to identify goal locations that satisfy specific criteria in an unknown area. In 2D scalar field adaptive navigation (SFAN), primitives navigate to or along features of interest in an unknown, possibly time-varying, planar scalar field. Features include extrema, contours, and fronts. This work solves the 2D SFAN problem using swarm robotic techniques. Robotic swarms are a subset of multi-robot systems that use decentralized control of simple interchangeable robots to perform collective actions. A subgroup of swarms is the Reactive Particle Swarm (RPS), characterized based on its simplicity, reactivity to its …

Barriers Minorities Need To Overcome To Achieve The Homeownership Dream, Nieves Gomez

Community Engagement Student Work

Buying a house is a dream that many people want to achieve; for some families obtaining a house is synonymous with stability. It is a home sweet home. It is having the right place to see the kids grow and thrive with a secure education, health, a good neighborhood, work for their parents, and a way to build wealth. It is the space for families to become real families. For a long time in the United States, minorities have had to overcome many obstacles to achieve their dream of acquiring a home. Despite the fact that there are federal policies …

The Waiting Game In Massachusetts: Are Housing Policies In Massachusetts Doing Enough To Serve The Neediest Households, Carlie Cherry Apr 2023

The Waiting Game In Massachusetts: Are Housing Policies In Massachusetts Doing Enough To Serve The Neediest Households, Carlie Cherry

Community Engagement Student Work

The cost of housing is a burden for many households across the United States. In Massachusetts, where rents are some of the highest in the country, affordable housing is particularly hard for the neediest households in the state who are already struggling with the cost of living. Due to a shortage of low income housing in Massachusetts, wait times for housing assistance and affordable housing are extremely long which only exacerbates the hardships that households face. The funding, building, and distribution of low income housing is controlled by the housing policies at the federal, state, and local levels. However, these …

Food For Thought: Recommendations To Create A Food Pantry At Merrimack College, Erin Lamonica Apr 2023

Food For Thought: Recommendations To Create A Food Pantry At Merrimack College, Erin Lamonica

Community Engagement Student Work

The purpose of this project was to explore food insecurity among college students. Research was conducted about the rate of food insecurity among college students and how higher education institutions have addressed the issue. Researchers have found that 33-40% of college students nationwide experience some level of food insecurity, and it disproportionately affects underrepresented populations of college students. With the rising cost of college education, campuses have enacted creative solutions to help improve the effects of food insecurity across this population. Upon analyzing this societal issue locally, a gap in food security resources was identified at Merrimack College. As a …

The Sino-Soviet Split: A Domestic Ideology Analysis, Caleb Ringger Apr 2023

The Sino-Soviet Split: A Domestic Ideology Analysis, Caleb Ringger

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

In December 1960, the Peking Review, China’s only English national news magazine, celebrated the “Eternal, Unbreakable Sino-Soviet Friendship” on its front page (Peking Review 1960). The alliance between the world’s largest communist nations certainly seemed ironclad, at least from an outside perspective. But over the next decade, relations between the two allies completely deteriorated, ultimately resulting in bloody confrontation on the Sino-Soviet border, where dozens were killed in violent clashes in March 1969. What accounts for the rapid deterioration in relations between China and the Soviet Union? How could two seemingly close allies turn into enemies so quickly?

Opioid Use Disorder In The United States, Macy Holmgren Apr 2023

Opioid Use Disorder In The United States, Macy Holmgren

Ballard Brief

Opioid use disorder affects 16 million people worldwide and over 2.1 million in the United States. OUD has been an ever-growing public health issue in the nation since 1999, causing death on an unprecedented scale through 2022. Chronic pain, overprescription, illicit use of prescription opioids, and inability to access treatment are all contributors to OUD and are perpetuated throughout the nation. Victims of opioid use disorder have a higher chance of becoming addicted to harder drugs, experiencing medical complications, and dying from an overdose. Evidence-based practices such as medication-assisted treatment must be leveraged to address the issue and reduce the …

An Ironic Alliance: The Domestic Foundations Of Qatar’S Support For Democratic Revolution Abroad, Jonah Phillips Apr 2023

An Ironic Alliance: The Domestic Foundations Of Qatar’S Support For Democratic Revolution Abroad, Jonah Phillips

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

When the wave of revolutions commonly referred to as the Arab Spring engulfed the Arab world in the early 2010s, regional powers were suddenly presented with a potentially complete restructuring of the Arab world’s political and social structure. In the years leading up to the uprisings, rising food prices, soaring unemployment, and widespread political corruption had converged to make the Middle East and North Africa a fertile ground for revolution. The mounting pressure came to a head in December of 2010 when demonstrations broke out across Tunisia following the self-immolation of a street vendor protesting police corruption. The following months …

Exit Survey Development, Melinda Koelling, Cynthia Klekar, Todd Kuchta, Heather Petcovic, Linda Borish

Assessment Grants

In a department like Geography, an exit interview is used to assess programs. In a department like Mathematics, there is no existing exit interview or survey. Even for those interview and survey questions that exist, the questions could be shared and improved. A core group of chairs from Mathematics, Geography, and Philosophy would like to develop exit assessments. A larger group of units proposes to work together to develop a bank of exit interview assessment questions that can be used to assess undergraduate and graduate programs.
