Searching For Control Of The Bacillus Subtilis Spore Surface, Charlotte Thomas Apr 2023

Searching For Control Of The Bacillus Subtilis Spore Surface, Charlotte Thomas

Inquiry Journal Spring 2023

Proteins are involved in an endless number of biological processes. However, their utility in engineering and medical purposes is limited by their fragility outside of their native environment. One method that scientists have developed to remedy this is by genetically engineering the bacterial spores of Bacillus subtilis to present the proteins of interest on their surface. In summer 2022, with funding from the Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program (REAP) at UNH, I performed research that aimed to improve this technique. Our goal was to further develop a system to control the amount of protein expressed on the surface of the …

The Battle Against "Ecology Nuts": An Examination Of Olympic Oil Refinery Proponents, Samantha Dinatale Apr 2023

The Battle Against "Ecology Nuts": An Examination Of Olympic Oil Refinery Proponents, Samantha Dinatale

Inquiry Journal Spring 2023

In the early 1970s, the United States was facing an oil embargo that sparked concern in citizens across the nation. In 1973, as the winter months were approaching, gasoline prices continued to skyrocket and rationing heating oil was highly encouraged. Americans struggled to adjust to such abrupt changes after having essentially unrestricted access to petroleum supplies. During this crisis, Aristotle Onassis swooped in and proposed to construct a massive oil refinery on the seacoast of New Hampshire. This plant, his team promised, would bring an abundance of fuel, jobs, and tax revenue to the area. However, a vast number of …

Lady Gaga: Free Bitch, Karynne Henry

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

I would be surprised if there was anyone under 45 who had never heard of Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga rose to fame in the Early 2000s as an eager songwriter turned pop sensation. Gaga grew to push the boundaries of pop music with her out-of-this-world performances and shocking lyrics. Many pushed out by society have clung to her uniqueness and connected with her niche, yet mainstream music. Lady Gaga, once a girl with dreams, now a pop sensation, is not without scars. The star has faced criticism, loss, and pain that has carried over into her life and music. There …

Aligning Course Learning Objectives And Program Learning Outcomes With Data Visualization, Jessica Cataldo

Assessment Grants

The proposed project will result in the creation of two data visualization tools that map course learning objectives to program learning outcomes for the new Health Administration bachelor’s program. These tools will guide the development of a skill level curriculum map to determine which course(s) are most appropriate to assess program outcomes. Since the program is new, program assessment is in its infancy, thus the project will serve as a catalyst for developing a comprehensive program assessment plan. The project will also support the program’s goal of obtaining Association of University Programs in Health Administration certification.

Inhabiting "Sore Butt Cracks": Queering The U.S. Long-Term Care System, Alison Lawrence Apr 2023

Inhabiting "Sore Butt Cracks": Queering The U.S. Long-Term Care System, Alison Lawrence

Women's and Gender Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

In the face of a failing long-term care system, the author positions a queer theoretical lens as a potential source of creativity and empathy to help us build a care system that supports the dignity and personhood of all patients. The comedic work of a long-term care patient, Youtuber Clay-The-Comedian, is analyzed through a queer-theories lens as a new approach to long-term care that celebrates the personhood of all types of bodies, while also never diminishing the often difficult reality that folks in need of care face. This queer rhetoric engages with the messy, embodied experiences of patients to develop …

Community Engagement Student Work

The goal of service learning is rooted in the integration of education, community, and self with the expectation that personal and community transformation takes place when students apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real needs of real people in the real world. This paper compares the service learning experiences of high school students done remotely during the 2020-21 school year versus service learning done in-person during the 2021-22 school year to determine if there is a difference in transformational impact by the type of service learning. A mixed methods program evaluation was completed that utilized data …

Equity Through Partnership: Overcoming Barriers To Family-School Partnership In K-12 School Settings, Keely L. Mccaskie Apr 2023

Equity Through Partnership: Overcoming Barriers To Family-School Partnership In K-12 School Settings, Keely L. Mccaskie

Community Engagement Student Work

Over the last few decades, it has become widely accepted that family-school partnership is an essential strategy to support the success of all students in K-12 school settings. However, despite this fact, policies and practices within the realm of family-school partnership remain largely undeveloped and inconsistent across the U.S, particularly in schools serving students from non-dominant backgrounds. There are several reasons for this, including the fact that theoretical frameworks in the field have remained limited in scope, and that there is a demonstrated lack of training for educators in the domain of family-school partnership. Nevertheless, there now exist some promising …

An Enhanced Disability Act: The Social Benefits Of Consistent Compliance And Comprehensive Training, Kylie Ford Apr 2023

An Enhanced Disability Act: The Social Benefits Of Consistent Compliance And Comprehensive Training, Kylie Ford

Community Engagement Student Work

In 1990, the most comprehensive and protective policy impacting those with disabilities was enacted. Since then, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was amended in 2008; therefore, one of the major legislations in place to encourage equity regarding disability has only been formally modified once in over 30 years. Despite ADA’s place within legislation, individuals with disabilities have remained the victims of stigmatization, discrimination and mistreatment. It is essential to analyze and enhance this policy in order to truly protect the disabled community.

Causality: Hypergraphs, Matter Of Degree, Foundations Of Cosmology, Cliff Joslyn, Andres Ortiz-Muñoz, Edgar Daniel Rodriguez Velasquez, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2023

Causality: Hypergraphs, Matter Of Degree, Foundations Of Cosmology, Cliff Joslyn, Andres Ortiz-Muñoz, Edgar Daniel Rodriguez Velasquez, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The notion of causality is very important in many applications areas. Because of this importance, there are several formalizations of this notion in physics and in AI. Most of these definitions describe causality as a crisp ("yes"-"no") relation between two events or two processes -- cause and effect. However, such descriptions do not fully capture the intuitive idea of causality: first, often, several conditions are needed to be present for an effect to occur, and, second, the effect is often a matter of degree. In this paper, we show how to modify the current description of causality so as to …

Foundations Of Neural Networks Explain The Empirical Success Of The "Surrogate" Approach To Ordinal Regression -- And Recommend What Next, Salvador Robles, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2023

Foundations Of Neural Networks Explain The Empirical Success Of The "Surrogate" Approach To Ordinal Regression -- And Recommend What Next, Salvador Robles, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Recently, a new efficient semi-heuristic statistical method -- called Surrogate Approach -- has been proposed for dealing with regression problems. How can we explain this empirical success? And since this method is only an approximation to reality, what can we recommend if there is a need for a more accurate approximation? In this paper, we show that this empirical success can be explained by the same arguments that explain the empirical success of neural networks -- and these arguments can also provide us with possible more general techniques (that will hopefully lead to more accurate approximation to real-life phenomena).

Towards Decision Making Under Interval Uncertainty, Juan A. Lopez, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2023

Towards Decision Making Under Interval Uncertainty, Juan A. Lopez, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, we need to make a decision. In many cases, we know the optimal decision in situations when we know the exact value of the corresponding quantity x. However, often, we do not know the exact value of this quantity, we only know the bounds on the value x -- i.e., we know the interval containing $x$. In this case, we need to select a decision corresponding to some value from this interval. The selected value will, in general, be different from the actual (unknown) value of this quantity. As a result, the quality of our decision …

Low-Probability High-Impact Events Are Even More Important Than It Is Usually Assumed, Aaron Velasco, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2023

Low-Probability High-Impact Events Are Even More Important Than It Is Usually Assumed, Aaron Velasco, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

A large proportion of undesirable events like earthquakes, floods, tornados occur in zones where these events are frequent. However, a significant number of such events occur in other zones, where such events are rare. For example, while most major earthquakes occur in a vicinity of major faults, i.e., on the border between two tectonic plates, some strong earthquakes also occur inside plates. We want to mitigate all undesirable events, but our resources are limited. So, to allocate these resources, we need to decide which ones are more important. For this decision, a natural idea is to use the product of …

What Do Goedel's Theorem And Arrow's Theorem Have In Common: A Possible Answer To Arrow's Question, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2023

What Do Goedel's Theorem And Arrow's Theorem Have In Common: A Possible Answer To Arrow's Question, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Kenneth Arrow, the renowned author of the Impossibility Theorem that explains the difficulty of group decision making, noticed that there is some commonsense similarity between his result and Goedel's theorem about incompleteness of axiomatic systems. Arrow asked if it is possible to describe this similarity in more precise terms. In this paper, we make the first step towards this description. We show that in both cases, the impossibility result disappears if we take into account probabilities. Namely, we take into account that we can consider probabilistic situations, that we can make probabilistic conclusions, and that we can make probabilistic decisions …

Cardiorespiratory And Metabolic Responses To Low-Intensity Blood Flow Restricted Running, Violet Sullivan Apr 2023

Cardiorespiratory And Metabolic Responses To Low-Intensity Blood Flow Restricted Running, Violet Sullivan

Inquiry Journal Spring 2023

Competitive long-distance running can result in overuse injuries which may hinder participation and success. Reducing running frequency and intensity can lead to detraining, meaning losing fitness. Blood flow restricted exercise is a rehabilitative training method wherein a pressurized cuff is applied to the upper portion of the upper or lower extremities, reducing blood flow. Blood flow restriction can be applied to low-intensity aerobic exercise such as running or walking and may elicit higher cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses than training without blood flow restriction, though still lower than that of high-intensity training. For this reason, runners could benefit from low-intensity blood …

Optimization Of Adsorption Of Methylene Blue Dye On Activated Charcoal, Abigail Seputro Apr 2023

Optimization Of Adsorption Of Methylene Blue Dye On Activated Charcoal, Abigail Seputro

Research and Creativity Symposium

Methylene blue and crystal violet are cationic dyes of high intensity that are commonly discharged in wastewater. The colored compounds in this environment inhibit sunlight penetration in waterways, resulting in the destruction of aquatic ecosystems. Activated carbon offers an attractive option for the efficient removal of dyes from wastewater due its excellent adsorption ability, highly porous structure, and large thermal/chemical stability. This study was conducted in order to investigate the adsorption of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution by various types of activated charcoal using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The effects of temperature and adsorbent quantity were studied to optimize the efficiency …
