Acculturation In Psychologists Practicing In The Southwest, Lisa Adams, Amy Band Apr 2023

Acculturation In Psychologists Practicing In The Southwest, Lisa Adams, Amy Band

Undergraduate Research Symposium

It is predicted that within 25 years over 50% of the United States population will identify partially as non-white. There are growing concerns about the immediate availability of culturally competent psychologists prepared to provide effective treatment for increasingly diverse clients. Traditional psychological models of acculturation evaluate an individual’s response to their environment. However, developing research suggests that acculturation can be best be understood through concepts relating to intersectionality. This is an emerging field of study in which multiple facets of identity interact to create a unique culture for a particular individual. While it is believed that intersectionality will ultimately transform …

Atrocities Committed Against Soviet Pows By The Third Reich, Keaton Larue Apr 2023

Atrocities Committed Against Soviet Pows By The Third Reich, Keaton Larue

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Soviet prisoners of war (POWs) were among some of the most affected victims of the Third Reich. Over half of their population died while held captive. An estimated 3.3 million out of the 5.7 million Soviet POWs died in the custody of Nazi Germany. The Nazis severely mistreated Soviet POWs and forced them to work, rest without shelter, suffer inhumane experiments, and starve. It was by no mistake Soviet POWs were treated this way by the Nazis; it was systematic and intentional for them to die. The most common form of death was starvation, but many also died of sickness/disease …

Extracting Cultural Commonsense Knowledge At Scale, Tuan Phong Nguyen, Simon Razniewski, Aparna S. Varde, Gerhard Weikum

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Structured knowledge is important for many AI applications. Commonsense knowledge, which is crucial for robust human-centric AI, is covered by a small number of structured knowledge projects. However, they lack knowledge about human traits and behaviors conditioned on socio-cultural contexts, which is crucial for situative AI. This paper presents Candle, an end-to-end methodology for extracting high-quality cultural commonsense knowledge (CCSK) at scale. Candle extracts CCSK assertions from a huge web corpus and organizes them into coherent clusters, for 3 domains of subjects (geography, religion, occupation) and several cultural facets (food, drinks, clothing, traditions, rituals, behaviors). Candle includes judicious techniques for …

Built Lives: Khwajasaras, Jouno-Karmis, And The Politics Of Non-Normative Kinship And Citizenship In South Asia, Salman Hussain, Simanti Dasgupta

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

This paper examines how relationships are ‘built’ among khwajasaras [non-normative non-binary persons] and female jouno karmis [sex workers] in two sites in Pakistan and India respectively. We focus on the non-normative nature of these relationships, first, to disassemble gender normativity itself; second, to argue that the colonial legacy of bureaucratic norming of kinship in South Asia, anchored in legal consanguinity and affinity on one hand, and territory and patriarchy on the other, erases these found relationships. Finally, in formulating what we term, ‘relative kinship’ –authenticating one's identity and belonging as a citizen typically through a male kin –we trace the …

Makara Journal of Technology

Polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration has gained increasing attention as a selective separation process to remove small solutes, such as metal ions, from water or wastewater. Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is one of the metal ions in wastewater that has received considerable attention because of its toxicity. Chitosan was used in this study as the polymer to bind Cr(VI) to enhance its removal by ultrafiltration. The effects of chitosan-to-Cr(VI) ratio on Cr(VI) rejection and permeate flux were investigated. In addition, the fouling tendency was evaluated. Results showed that the addition of chitosan with a mass ratio of 12.5 increased the Cr (VI) rejection from …
