Inpatient Physical Therapy Management Of Patient With Post-Operative Quadriparesis Following Posterior Cervical Lamenectomy And Fusion: A Case Report, Kayla A. Christopherson

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background and Purpose: Spinal hemangioblastoma are benign tumors that compress the surface of the spinal cord. Surgical resection of the hemangioblastoma with a posterior cervical laminectomy and fusion technique is one treatment option. This form of treatment can lead to poor outcomes such as post-operative quadriparesis although rare. The following case study depicts physical therapy interventions use to treat a patient with post-operative quadriparesis for posterior laminectomy and fusion of C6-T2.

Case Description: The patient was a 77-year-old female with complex past medical history and multiple comorbidities. She received inpatient physical therapy for 31 days before transferring to …

Exploring Clinical Risk Factors For Breast Cancer Among American Indian Women, Melanie Nadeau, Marilyn Klug, Kathryn R. Wise, Lyle G. Best

Indigenous Health Faculty Publications

Objective: Very little is known about the breast cancer risk profile among American Indian women. Previous research shows that the proportion of American Indian/Alaska Native women with baseline characteristics (commonly known breast cancer risk factors) differs from other ethnicities. This retrospective case control study was designed to the explore the association of these factors among American Indian women with and without breast cancer.

Methods: Cases and controls were retrospectively selected from the medical records of American Indian women who obtained their health care from Quentin N. Burdick Memorial Health Care Facility (IHS) in Belcourt, ND. For each woman with breast …

Predictors For Student Success On The National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (Nbdhe), Jennifer S. Sherry May 2023

Predictors For Student Success On The National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (Nbdhe), Jennifer S. Sherry

Ed.D. Capstone Reports

The primary focus of this research was to determine if any link exists to pre-entry grade point average (GPA), science-based didactic dental hygiene course GPA, and graduation GPA and success on the National Board of Dental Examinations, Inc. (NBDHE).

Results were gathered through NBDHE score reports from Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s (SIUC) dental hygiene program as well as GPA and course grades from the SIUC Registrar’s office for graduates from the Class of 2012-2022. Pre-entry GPA, graduation GPA, and individual science-based didactic dental hygiene courses were evaluated by using the course grades “A, B, or C” as “pass” and “D …

Judicial Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: How Do Diverse Judges Affect Sentencing Guidelines In The State Of Minnesota, Morgan Bausman May 2023

Judicial Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: How Do Diverse Judges Affect Sentencing Guidelines In The State Of Minnesota, Morgan Bausman

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Equal representation within the judicial system is very important. The state of Minnesota has four-hundred-forty-one judges, all different. When the legal system was created, the stereotypical judge was a white male. The legal system that represents the country should grow and diversify along with society. The issue of diversified judicial representation, with a focus on the race and gender of such judges, is a contentious debate across the country. Prior research has studied judges at the federal level and showed that diversity matters, but there have been no studies done at the state level, specifically in Minnesota. I gather data …

Relationships Between Horizontal And Vertical Movements Of Shortfin Mako Sharks (Isurus Oxyrinchus) In The Western North Atlantic Ocean, Katie Gheysen May 2023

Relationships Between Horizontal And Vertical Movements Of Shortfin Mako Sharks (Isurus Oxyrinchus) In The Western North Atlantic Ocean, Katie Gheysen

Senior Honors Projects

Highly mobile pelagic predators, such as tuna, swordfish, and sharks, often undergo changes in depth over a 24-h period and exhibit diel vertical migration (DVM), presumably to maximize foraging efficiency. Studies on the diving behavior of shortfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus) have been inconclusive as to whether this species consistently exhibits DVM. We investigated relationships between horizontal and vertical movements in shortfin mako sharks by using location and depth data collected from SPLASH tags and pop-up satellite archival tags (PSAT). A state-space model was applied to location data derived from SPLASH tags to generate continuous tracks and to …

New Inhibitors Of Insulin-Degrading Enzyme, Jake Sarno May 2023

New Inhibitors Of Insulin-Degrading Enzyme, Jake Sarno

Chemistry Master’s Theses

Expre ed in nearly all mammalian tissues, insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) is a ubiquitous zinc endopeptida e which cleaves many peptides endogenous to human and other organisms. IDE is implicated to hold vital roles in homeostasis, involved in several cellular pathways related to cellular growth, proteasome turnover, and heat- hock respon e. The enzyme also hydrolyzes several ligands of medical interest, such as insulin, amyl in, and amyloid-beta peptide in vivo, and calcitonin, ghrelin, glucagon, and atrial natriuretic peptide in vitro. However, while much is known about the enzyme's function, the mechanism of the IDE cleavage reaction remains poorly understood. The …

Evaluation Of Landowner Perceptions Of Participating In Conservation Easements In The Beaver Lake And Illinois River Watersheds: Motivators And Barriers, Lauren Gwaltney May 2023

Evaluation Of Landowner Perceptions Of Participating In Conservation Easements In The Beaver Lake And Illinois River Watersheds: Motivators And Barriers, Lauren Gwaltney

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Conservation easements (CEs) are an effective way to protect natural resources with minimal impact on the daily activities of landowners (LOs), but there is still resistance to CE adoption among landowners in Northwest Arkansas and Northeast Oklahoma. Therefore, there is a need to characterize LOs’ perceptions of CEs in these regions and adjust easement organization programming accordingly. This study followed a non-experimental, exploratory survey research design to gather information regarding demographics, awareness, attitudes, and preferences of LOs in the Beaver Lake and Illinois River watersheds. Likert-scale survey responses were assigned numerical values and averaged to find Pearson correlation coefficients between …

Library Display Posters

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month is observed annually in the U.S. during May and recognizes the achievements and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Americans in the history, culture, and achievements of our country.

The legacy of the AAPI community dates back to the earliest arrival of Asian immigrants to North America and the contributions of families and individuals continue to shape the heritage of the lower Rio Grande Valley.

This exhibit documents Asian exclusion and anti-immigration as well as the historical contributions and achievements of our APA community in the Valley.

The Health Care Industry Is Ready For A Revolution: Its Privacy Laws Are Not, Erin Rutherford

Student Scholarship

This paper highlights the costs and benefits associated with the gathering, storing, analyzing, and digitizing of health information; examines current privacy laws and their inadequacies in the new and constantly changing digital health world; and then provides a proposal framework to balance encouraging innovation while protecting individual autonomy. The article specifically proceeds as follows. This paper first discusses of the evolution of the health industry, from paper records to the wide array of sources generating health information today. Next, it considers the benefits to the ever-increasing amount of health information, which, while considerable can often be in tension with privacy …

Page And Screen: Storybook Features That Promote Parent-Child Talk During Shared Reading, Gabrielle Strouse, Georgene Troseth, Zachary D. Stuckelman May 2023

Page And Screen: Storybook Features That Promote Parent-Child Talk During Shared Reading, Gabrielle Strouse, Georgene Troseth, Zachary D. Stuckelman

School of Education Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to systematically vary the medium used for shared reading (digital versus print), the presence of an audio narration feature, and the inclusion of a character offering conversational prompts to identify their impact on parent-child language. In a randomized experimental design, 67 children (2.75-5.10 years old) shared a book with a parent twice. Built-in conversational prompts were effective in increasing the quantity and quality of extratextual language and conversation. There was no evidence that the book being digital in format nor having automatically-playing narration decreased language or conversation quality compared to reading the print version. …

The Effect Of Uncertainty On Explanatory Preference, Eli Schwartz-Yermack May 2023

The Effect Of Uncertainty On Explanatory Preference, Eli Schwartz-Yermack

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Previous research on political extremism has led to two competing perspectives. One views extremists as being more knowledgeable and informed about politics than moderates, while the other claims it is moderates who know more. These two views appear to have arisen from studies that examined different types of political knowledge. This phenomenon could be explained by extremists and moderates having different preferences when it comes to their consumption of political information. We hypothesized that participants indirectly manipulated to feel more extreme conviction in their political views by manipulating them to feel uncertain would prefer more simple explanations of political issues …

Updating Of Protagonist Information In Narratives, Luke Mcclanahan May 2023

Updating Of Protagonist Information In Narratives, Luke Mcclanahan

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of the present research was to further examine contested findings in the research literature surrounding the processes readers use to maintain and update their mental representation of contextual information in a text. Research indicates that whether information is directly relevant to the goal of a story’s protagonist influences whether it will be used as a basis for later validation (Levine & Kim, 2019; Levine & Klin, 2001; Lutz & Radvansky, 1997). Some prior research that indicates that participants fail to validate inconsistent contextual information (Albrecht & Myers, 1995; Smith et al., 2020; Smith & O’Brien, 2012) relies on …

Adolescent Perception Of Different Conspiracy-Like Scenarios, Christine Honn May 2023

Adolescent Perception Of Different Conspiracy-Like Scenarios, Christine Honn

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Conspiracy theories are claims that are unverified, less plausible than the mainstream explanation, and contain a malevolent actor. A potentially related concept is intellectual humility, which is a person's willingness to admit when they are not knowledgeable about a subject and turn to an expert or authority figure for an answer. I hypothesized that adolescents who are more prone to endorse conspiracy theories in general as well as believe in specific conspiracy theories would have lower levels of intellectual humility than their conspiracy-resistant peers. Participants read eight conspiratorial vignettes and answered questions about traits of the vignettes, then filled out …

Effects Of Individual Differences On Influence Of Expert Testimony, Peyton Mosman May 2023

Effects Of Individual Differences On Influence Of Expert Testimony, Peyton Mosman

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

A significant percentage of wrongful convictions are a result of faulty eyewitness identifications. It is understood that jurors are quick to trust and eyewitness testimony, that eyewitness testimonies are reliable only in specific circumstances, and that jurors are rarely privy to importance of the factors that impact the reliability of eyewitness testimony. Although an expert testimony is sometimes a beneficial way to help compensate for this lack of knowledge in jurors, it can sometimes be counterintuitive and cause jurors to disregard all eyewitness testimonies rather than only disregarding the unreliable ones. This study considers four individual difference factors and looks …

Public Good Through Charter Schools?, Philip Hackney May 2023

Public Good Through Charter Schools?, Philip Hackney

Georgia State University Law Review

Should nonprofit charter schools be considered “charitable” under § 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and be entitled to the benefits that go with that designation (income tax exemption, charitable contribution deduction, etc.)? Current tax law treats them as such; the question is whether there is a good rationale for this treatment. In addition to efficiency and equity, I consider political justice as a value in evaluating tax policy. By political justice, I mean a democratic system that prioritizes the opportunity for more people to have a voice in collective decisions (political voice equality or PVE). Thus, a tax policy …

Degrees Of Losing: A Challenge To The Federal "Frozen Benefit Rule", Tuscan A. Fairfield May 2023

Degrees Of Losing: A Challenge To The Federal "Frozen Benefit Rule", Tuscan A. Fairfield

Georgia State University Law Review

The 2016 amendment to the Uniformed Services Former Spouses’ Protection Act dramatically changed the level of discretion afforded to states in dividing military retired pay between divorcing parties. Now, all divorces involving an active service member at the time of divorce must adhere to Congress’s strict formula when dividing the former spouse’s interest in the service member’s pension. This Note explores the question of whether Congress overstepped its constitutional limitations in directing the actions of state courts, whether the new rule may violate principles of equal protection doctrine, and whether a challenge to the novel scheme has any chance of …

Correcting Crooked Licensing Boards With A Revolving-Door Statute, Ronnie Thompson May 2023

Correcting Crooked Licensing Boards With A Revolving-Door Statute, Ronnie Thompson

Georgia State University Law Review

Contrary to conventional wisdom, occupational licensing restrictions do not serve a primary purpose of protecting consumers. They instead wage war on the market economy. This reality is unsurprising when one considers the makeup of a typical licensing board, which consists primarily of active market participants. These industry incumbents scheme to keep potential competitors out. Entrance exams for florists and onerous educational requirements for interior designers—absurd as they seem—become the rule rather than the exception. Despite their propensity for anticompetitive conduct, licensing boards elude review under the Sherman Act, the nation’s chief law regulating anticompetitive conduct. Licensing boards need not defend …
